Jim Harbaugh on San Francisco Quarterbacks: “I Usually Tend to Go With the Guy Who’s Got the Hot Hand”
Jim Harbaugh did nothing to prevent a quarterback controversy in San Francisco after Colin Kaepernick’s performance last night. Kaepernick torched a Bears defense which had limited all passers for the year to under 6.4 yards per attempt, 19 interceptions, and still has the best passer rating against in the league.
After the game, Jim Harbaugh didn’t throw any water on the Colin Kaepernick fire: ”I usually tend to go with the guy who’s got the hot hand, and we’ve got two quarterbacks that have got a hot hand.” When asked about the supposed axiom that you don’t lose your job to injury, Harbaugh responded, ”We’ll make that determination as we go. But, there’s no rule.”
At a time when we deride coaches for double speak, and when Harbaugh himself claimed that he did not try to recruit Peyton Manning to replace Alex Smith a few months ago, this is a refreshing approach.
As Harbaugh noted, Alex Smith was playing well right before the injury. Would a guy that has completed 70% of his passes and is averaging 8.0 yards per attempt really get replaced as the starter? Ordinarily, the answer would be no. Kaepernick, though, gave a performance that even belied the numbers.
We’ve seen Alex Smith play the game manager role, and the 49ers offense is one that relies on its formations and running game to create the passing opportunities. Against weak opponents, Smith has thrived. His only game with more than 240 yards passing came against the Buffalo Bills. When he had to play in a shootout against the Saints’ high powered offense and suspect defense, Smith answered.
Kaepernick, though, just made the Bears defense look like the Bills or Saints. This wasn’t a see how the game goes and respond situation. The game plan with a backup quarterback was more aggressive than we’ve seen them call with Smith as the starter. They opened the game with the type of throw you don’t let the quarterback throw if you don’t trust him. The throw he made to Kyle Williams for 53 yards was top notch.
This system is going to produce numbers, but if the coaching staff feels more comfortable with one quarterback, and implementing a more expansive game plan, well, there is no rule. The guess here? Kaepernick starts this week, and Smith is given one more week to recover. If he comes back to earth with a much better matchup, then the choice becomes simpler. If he lights up the Saints, well, things would become very interesting.

Is this guy just half black, or…What is his ethnicity?
November 20th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Gotta be mixed. He’s got white facial features and a “bro” accent.

total team fail from bears last night. bad play after bad play would keep topping each other, finished off by hester running backwards 20 yards on a late punt return
frauds, and i was on record saying that beating totmato cans by a lot predicted nothing for their performance against good teams. green bay, houston and niners are the best teams they have faced and they have looked silly against two of them. cutler would not have made a difference. o-line and tice are the weakest links
whipping bad teams (jax, indy) means nothing when you play good teams. period

Jim Harbaugh is a refreshing freakshow. Love that guy.
November 20th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
That might have been the worst offensive line performance I’ve ever seen last night. Gabe Carimi is done.
November 20th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
He’s just like Brady Hoke was his coy vagueness. What a trickster!

i want to hate jim harbaugh so fucking much, but just can’t.

I’ll maintain that I don’t think it means NOTHING. It means the Bears play great once they get a lead.

I really didn’t think Smith would lose his job, but I guess when Kaepernick did it against the Bears, it means something. Smith lit up a pretty good Seattle defense though, and has had a few good games like that.
Only two things will happen here, IMO. 1) Kaepernick had a flash-in-the-pan game, and poor accuracy will catch up to him and he will never be a starter or 2) Harbaugh has seen the guy practice enough to know he’ll be good and has been waiting for a chance to make him the permanent starter. I do think Smith has some trade value. He’s not great, but neither are the QBs the Chiefs/Jags/Bills/Lions etc are trotting out there.

Better analogy is you’ve been fucking this bitch for awhile, and she’s only alright (6 on a good day). Not really the best looking girl, and you probably don’t want to marry her/commit long term.
Then, last night, you fucked the beautiful girl with awesome legs that you had briefly made out with at a party a couple years ago. So long to the 6, hello long legs love!
November 20th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
You are putting a lot of stock that you aren’t going to wake up and realize she’s a butterface… butterbrain for QB’s? Let’s see him down the stretch in a close game. I don’t think Harbaugh makes the move unless he really hates Alex Smith and thinks he knows something about Kaepernick.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
One game, Lisk. One game from a guy that had no significant film at the NFL level. One game behind a very good offensive line. One game called by one of the better coaches in the NFL. He looked very good in that one game… but it’s one game.
Smith starts next week pending his brain bruise… and this is a great problem to have for the 49ers.

November 20th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Aldon Smith makes a lot of people look bad. It’s the guy on the other end of the line that’s done, and has been for some time. Carimi has 12 NFL starts. He looked terrible last night against one of the better pash rushers in the league. But it’s one game. Kinda like Kaepernick’s one game.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
I’d fuck Smith because his hands would make my hog look enormous.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
I agree with Lisk, that if Kaepernick does well this week, he gets the starting job for the rest of the year. Why go back to running an abstemious offense with Smith?

Rivers is an infection at this point. Can his career recover once Norv goes?
November 20th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
No we can’t. The Giants got throttled by the Bengals. Are they dogshit, too? The Packers lost to the Colts. Are they dogshit?
Week to week league. Bears looked really bad in week 11 and have a tremendous weakness in their offensive line that has been exploited more than just last night. They’re a playoff contending team in the NFC, and probably not one that should be favored to win the conference.
Relax, fatty.

Smith starts Sunday if healthy. But, there’s going to come a time next March when the Niners have to decide if they want to pay Smith his bonus to keep playing or go with CK. Harbaugh made the call to get him in the 2nd round last year, so clearly, he knows something. 5 players from our 2011 draft class had an impact on that game last night.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:18 AM

I wouldn’t call the Bears dogshit, but just look at their wins and look at their losses. They definitely look like they have a weekly poker game and play in a softball league in the sunny neighborhood of Fraudville.

They’ve got a cap savant running the show, and they seem to keep drafting well, so I don’t think it will be as bad as it could be. I don’t see them paying Goldson big money, and I’m not sure Justin Smith gets a huge offer next year either. Rogers is locked in for another 3 years at a team friendly deal too. Sign Bowman though. Do whatever it takes.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
The Lions 2nd round pick in 2011 was taken out of Sundays game for the last two drives and sent him home yesterday and will be inactive this week. Mayhew picked this doofus Titus Young SENIOR over Randall Cobb.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
Things are setting up nicely for a run of Texans-49ers super bowls. Two teams with similar mentalities, sort of going against the grain of the trend of gunslinging NFL offenses. I think the Texans match up well against the 49ers, even though I think the 49ers, on the whole, are more impressive in similar match-ups. Kubiak v. Harbaugh is a big advantage for the 9ers.

I’ll feel better about the Texas long term when they finally draft another playmaking receiver. Andre, last Sunday notwithstanding, isn’t getting any younger.

“I’ll feel better about the Texas long term when they finally draft another playmaking receiver. Andre, last Sunday notwithstanding, isn’t getting any younger.”
It’s definitely their biggest need. But I am encouraged by the fact that AJ said after the game that this was the first time in 2-3 years he’s felt completely healthy. They need a healthy AJ to beat Denver and NE (and the NFC champ).
Hopefully that Lee kid out of USC will get caught smoking pot and raping women just before the draft and the Texans can draft him with the 32nd overall pick.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Didn’t end that way. He accidentally killed that younger dude who was staying with him, cause he snorted the poison capsule that was meant for that junkie who always jumped Bubbles for his shit. Bubs is basically mental, and in a hospital at the end of the series I think.

Chris Perry was a beast that year. Vs OSU he went 31-154, but I was confusing that with the Michigan State game, 51-219. I’m not sure how he got out of bed Sunday morning.

I’m encouraged by that as well, but every time he runs on a screen or something I feel like he’s one misstep away from blowing out his knee. I tense up every time he jumps into the crowd after a touchdown.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
He definitely wasn’t this good at Penn State….but he’s better than Willis at this point.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
week to week league? not sure that means as much as losing to the three quality teams they’ve played, spaced out over 11 weeks. the aura around this team doesn;t change…they will more than likely look like shit against good teams, bonus points if it’s nationally televised
vikings twice? split at best.
losses to seahawks and packers again. i may be wrong but third in the division means no playoffs, right?

So, kazzy, what’s the “fucking some bitch” analogy for finding out there’s a fifth season to The Wire?
November 20th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Rodney, what’s your take on Foster’s 3.8 ypc this year? Worrisome? Completely a function of the O-line or do you see some change in his running this year?
November 20th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
That was the end of season 4
You are correct. Totally forgot about the sister. Carry on good sir

Rodney, what’s your take on Foster’s 3.8 ypc this year? Worrisome? Completely a function of the O-line or do you see some change in his running this year?
I won’t speak for Rodney, but I personally find it a little worrisome. But I think it has less to do with Foster’s head (i.e. I don’t think he’s turning into Shaun Alexander 2.0) and more with the new line this year. They are fine at pass protection but don’t seem to be as good run blocking this year.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Yeah, kinda cropped that shit out of my mind with the stupid newspaper angle. Actually only season I don’t own on DVD. My b.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
That’s my impression as well, MS, but I’m not an expert on line play. It just seems like there’s a lot more penetration than in previous years, but I don’t know if part of that is defenses just deciding to focus more on the running game.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
There should NEVER be a fucking some bitch analogy for finding a little more than you expect.

November 20th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
maybe foster’s YPC is affected by getting more goalline touches? havent seen enough of the texans to know for sure, but this’d be one reason.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Cobi Hamilton out of Arkansas, baller.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Htown, it could be the case, but this line is quite different from the one Foster ran behind last year. Ben Jones is still pretty young at guard but I like him long term. Our biggest problem seems to be Derek Newton at RT. The guy is not getting it done. I’m also still puzzled by the drafting of Brandon Brooks. He does not have the prototypical zone blocking frame and right now is buried on the third team offense. Regardless of how this year goes I’d like to see the Texans address receiver and O-line again in the draft next year.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Closest I’ve ever come is watching Ace Ventura. That was plenty for me, thank you.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
is it not possible foster is gassed? every yard you get from an undrafted guy is a bonus
November 20th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
maybe foster’s YPC is affected by getting more goalline touches? havent seen enough of the texans to know for sure, but this’d be one reason.
That might be part of the answer Ben Tate isn’t even listed on the depth chart right now (still injured? can’t recall right now). Tate got most of the goal line snaps last year. Foster was getting more of them and Sunday was actually his first game of the season where he didn’t score a TD.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
is it not possible foster is gassed? every yard you get from an undrafted guy is a bonus
He’s not just an undrafted player anymore. He’s now an undrafted player with a long term, big time contract extension.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Brisiel hasn’t exactly been a revelation for the Raider…you can have him back for a bag balls.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Foster’s load was not that high last year. But he’s now on pace to exceed the dreaded 370 carries that the stat geeks talk about all the time.
I just noticed that Terrell Davis had an astounding 481 carries including the postseason in 1997. He had another amazing year in ’98 before it all came to an end.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Brisiel hasn’t exactly been a revelation for the Raider…you can have him back for a bag balls.
Texans let him walk because he injured his ankle twice last year I think. Why keep him when you have young guys like Jones and Caldwell to build off of.
November 20th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
long term
tough call for a multiple-car-crash position
November 20th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
I worry about the amount of touches he is getting. The need Tate back, quickly.
November 20th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
“Rodney, what’s your take on Foster’s 3.8 ypc this year? Worrisome? Completely a function of the O-line or do you see some change in his running this year?”
I think having a new RG and RT is about 90% of it. The zone scheme is dependent on the whole unit working together and you just can’t make up for the fact that these guys are first time starters learning to play together. I think Caldwell is a bust at this point and they need to just stick with Jones. Newton is pretty inconsistent, but shows flashes of being competent. My hope is that as the season goes along, and they rack up more experience, it will get better.
I still think this team needs to open it up a little more too and get Aryan more involved in the passing game. He’s one of the best pass catching RBs in the league, yet has only 20 catches through 9 games.
November 20th, 2012 at 12:04 PM

“I Usually Tend to Go With the Guy Who’s Got the Hot Hand”
Nobody made a joke about how this is basically giving the job to Smith, since his hands heat up much faster due to the smaller surface area? Fuck all of you. And Marqise Lee is a sophomore so the Texans can’t get him at #32 next year under any circumstances
