Jeff Tedford Fired by California Bears, According to Multiple Reports
Jeff Tedford, who spent the last 11 years coaching the Cal football team, has been fired according to multiple reports. The firing comes a day after reporters were speculating that Tedford would keep his job.
The Bears haven’t won a bowl game since 2008, which is also the last time they finished the season ranked. The Bears were a disaster this year (3-9, 2-7 in the Pac 12), and ended the season with five straight losses. It looked like his team quit on Tedford the last two weeks against the Oregons: the Bears lost by a combined 121-31.
Who’s getting the job? It’ll be a coveted one considering the location (Berkeley) and the rise of the Pac-12. But good luck winning immediately – it looks like Stanford is here to stay, and Oregon State and Oregon are programs that have been on the rise for years (even if Chip Kelly leaves, the Ducks have NIKE). Washington has one of the best young coaches in the conference in Steve Sarkisian.
A name that will almost certainly pop up first to replace Tedford? Northern California’s Chris Petersen (who listened to UCLA last year, but ultimately passed).
[UPDATE: Three other names are going around in Pac-12 circles - Mike MacIntyre, who has San Jose State 8-2 this year, Sonny Dykes, who is working wonders at Louisiana Tech, and Willie Taggart, who is rebuilding an awful Western Kentucky program.]

This is certainly the time to be a college football coaching candidate. Lots of solid to great jobs opening up.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
KyDerbyJay is reporting that Gruden to Tennessee is basically a done deal.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Northern California’s Chris Petersen (who listened to UCLA last year, but ultimately passed).
I see what you did there.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Maryland should fire Edsall right now and snatch him up.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Meh.

KyDerbyJay is reporting that Gruden to Tennessee is basically a done deal.
He was at Bob Dylan last night. Probably still stoned.
/Gruden in orange pants is not something I am looking forward to.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Gus Malzahn should go there to continue the death of defense in pac 12
November 20th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Absurdly dumb if Gruden takes a college job.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
I am just repeating what my contact at SEC office tells me. And it’s being widely reported in Tennessee media circles.
I wish I was.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
rank the openings:
Arkansas, Tennessee, Auburn, Cal.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
If Gruden goes to Tennessee. 7 or 8 million per year?
November 20th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
As for the Cal job…I have a strong suspicion that James Franklin is going to be their top target.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Tenn, Auburn, Cal, Arkansas.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
1) Tenn, 2a) Auburn, 2b) Arky, 4) Cal
November 20th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Tenn message boards had this over the weekend. They have good details, too. Guy sent something to me i haven’t used yet. It does mesh with what people who have dealt with Gruden in the last few years told me.
He’s asking for the world, and Tennessee just might give it to him. Total control. Blank check. I think ultimately he’ll say no to all his silly demands. He’s an attention whore.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
I think you can put the first three in any order with Cal a ways behind. I think the order you have them in is about right.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
Warm weather coaching gig.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
Tenn, Aub, Ark, Cal
November 20th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
1/2/3. SEC schools in whatever order.
4. cal.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:20 PM
You and Clay Travis. East coast guy his entire life. Don’t see it. Hear he loves Vandy, thinks (as i do) he can build up something very nice
November 20th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
He’s asking for the world, and Tennessee just might give it to him. Total control. Blank check
Do it. Just get this hell over with
November 20th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
lol. ever been to SF in the summer?
people actually think cal is a “good job?” cantexplainthat.jpg
November 20th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
He’s asking for the world, and Tennessee just might give it to him. Total control. Blank check.
I’m not saying he is a bad coach, but he’s made himself into a pretty big name by winning that one Super Bowl with someone else’s players against his old team that never bothered changing the audibles.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
but, but, THE MAN IS JUST A FOOTBALL PLAYER, err, COACH.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
Good stepping-stone job with a good recruiting base (despite the competition) in a fairly open conference. Petersen would be nuts to take it but I could see any number of mid-major coaches jumping at that opportunity.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Amazing how many people forget this. That Bucs team is the most fraudulent SB champ in the last two decades.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Does this include his brother being given the job in 3 years?
November 20th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
TBL thinks it’s SoCal.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
Berkeley is also not in SF.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
i like Sonny Dykes. knows offense. check the last 2 yrs – competitive in all games, even with the big boys.
Has texas connections. good young-ish football mind.
you could call up Petersen and all those dudes, but that might just be wasting time
November 20th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
Pretty sure Trent Dilfer gracing our TV’s daily is enough of a reminder.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Just saw he’ll be replacing Gruden on MNF if he does leave, according to twitter.
As if the marginalization of MNF wasn’t certain enough.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Not sure how much that will help his recruiting at Cal. Maybe he’ll pluck a couple of mid-level recruits from the state every year.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
This what you meant?
November 20th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
“Coldest winter I’ve ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.” -Twain
November 20th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
I don’t know, the defense that year was pretty fucking good. Lynch, R. Barber, Simeon Rice, Sapp, and Brooks. Sure the offense wasn’t lighting the world on fire, but Brad Johnson wasn’t THAT bad.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Matt Millen? If he can get the taste of Montee Ball’s balls out of his mouth. The job is his.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Taggart has been awesome at WKU. If Kentucky doesn’t throw everything they have at him they are the clowns we know they are. Dykes also has Kentucky ties.
it’ll be interesting to see the direction some of these schools go. There a lot of really good mid major coaches right now, but I think these big schools want “name” hires like Malzahn and Charlie Strong when there are a lot of really good unknown guys. Tim Deruyter (really good defensive coach head coach at Fresno) and Gary Andersen at Utah State come to mind.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Seems like there may be some confusion about Bay Area weather…
Just to let everyone know…SF’s weather sucks. It is cold due to the ocean air and the fog hanging over this micro-climate on the peninsula. You can drive across the bridge and it can be 20-30 degrees warmer.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Yes. That’s why I usually stick to penis and car crash jokes.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
How much money/interest has Dooley cost Dykes?
November 20th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Trent Diler on TV reminds me daily that I lost money on that goddamn Ravens win though and that’s our nation’s longest standing tragedy.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
These were the the first two to come to my mind. DeRuyter would be a great hire and what Andersen has done at Utah St. is amazing.
Would Vic Fangio leave his Niners DC job for Cal or is he quickly becoming a candidate for an NFL head coaching gig?
November 20th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Miami wouldn’t give it to him. Probably a good thing they didn’t because when the sanction stuff popped up he would have left anyway.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Don’t forget killing off celebrities. Got any good Kim Kardashian jokes?
November 20th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
I’ve heard his name tossed around for the Eagles job.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Vandy has a ceiling though which is probably 9 wins in the SEC. Franklin cannot compete for a BCS bowl in that conference with all the heavyweights there. Maybe that’s ok with him. I don’t know his temperment. I don’t think Cal is the right job for Franklin, but I don’t think he’ll be in Nashville for more than 2 years.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
Great movie.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Mike MacIntyre, who has San Jose State 8-2 this year, Sonny Dykes, who is working wonders at Louisiana Tech, and Willie Taggart, who is rebuilding an awful Western Kentucky program.]
kinda like yesterday when we talked about NY Times names in the roundup
these were some great coaching names
Willie Taggart
Sonny Dykes
Mike MacIntyre
Scrappy O’Coachington
Nails Ironsides

November 20th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Sonny Dykes is 2-13 against teams with winning records. Meanwhile, his defense gives up a ton of points. I’m not sure why people are attaching his name to non-Kentucky programs because I don’t think he’s worthy.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Arkansas, Tennessee, Auburn, Cal.
Auburn, Arkansas, Cal, Tenn
Also, that guy from Kent State shold be given a billion dollars. Graham Harrell (sic?). He’ll go somewhere.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Some NFL teams are going to make a run at Shaw from Stanford. That could open up as well. He worked in the NFL like 7 or 8 years.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
Charlie Strong to Arkansas!
November 20th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Hazell. He’s got the next major Big 10 job wrapped up.
This is something else to consider, the stigma is gone for NFL teams to hire college coaches which means we could see a few more guys move up.

November 20th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Franklin won’t be able to win big at Vandy. His wins this year: Presbyterian, Missouri, Auburn, UMass, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Tennessee. None of those teams are going to bowls. Tennessee and Auburn won’t be this awful forever. If he can parlay the last couple seasons into a better job (pretty much any major conference job is better than Vandy) he needs to do it.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
/raises hand as the one tossing his name around
November 20th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
anything to get gruden’s annoying ass out of the booth.
and, was he really that great of a coach?
November 20th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Northern California, where the girls are warm. Then, Knoxville, Aubie and Fayetteville.
Once Tedford lands at a place where admissions requirements are a bit gentler, he’s gonna be fine. He’s gonna have some options, and can afford to be picky.
November 20th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Why would Chris Peterson want this job?
November 20th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
It’s amazing how the SEC is both awesome this year (6 of top 12 teams) and terrible (above-referenced teams).
November 20th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
They certainly weren’t a bad team. They just weren’t the best team in the NFL and won that Super Bowl almost solely because Gruden’s happened to draw his old team.
November 20th, 2012 at 2:01 PM
Maryland should fire Edsall right now
All that needs to be said.
November 20th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
who was? do you really think Tennessee would have beaten the Bucs in the Super Bowl? I think you overestimate how good the league was that year.
November 20th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
Andy Reid and the Eagles really pooped themselves in that Bucs-Eagles NFC title game. WOOF.
November 20th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
I’ll give Gruden some credit – he resurrected the Raiders and turned Rich Gannon into an MVP. He also made it to the playoffs with Chris Simms at QB.
November 20th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
When was the last time this actually happened? Pats in 2004?
November 20th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
“DeRuyter would be a great hire ”
HA! Ask Aggie fans how great he did with his defenses in the 2nd halves while in Aggieland. I do think he’s a good coach, but he got his shit pushed in on the regular while in Aggieland.

You can drive across the bridge and it can be 20-30 degrees warmer.when you drive past the caldecott tunnel, yes, yes it can.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
graham harrell
You mean Darrell Hazell. Tressell tree. Good guy – played at Muskigam (sp?) with a friend of mine.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
I’m a Vandy season ticket holder, so I’m beyond biased. I think if he can churn a couple of top-15 recruiting classes (which he’s on pace for next year), I think he can build a 8-9 win program. I’m not sure what else you could ask for in the SEC.
If he wins 7 games a year at Vandy, he becomes a legend. 7 wins a year at most schools gets you fired. In a lot of ways, Vandy seems like the perfect job. Low risk, high reward.
All I know if he leaves Vandy after this season, he has sold a lot of “build a program bullsh*t to recruits and fans”.
/fingers crossed
