They’ve turned her in particular and their relationship in general into a sort of commentary on the changing role of women at the time. The 1920s was really the beginning of women’s liberation and Margaret is struggling to identify with that while simultaneously realizing that that might mean leaving the wealth and comfort that she fell into ass backwards. As mole would say, it’s yet another ham fisted plot device stemmed in history which the writers have grown to love so much.

Having said all of that I was not surprised to see Sleator get killed. The second a box was delivered at 4am I knew he was going to be in it. The show’s writers need to realize that most of it’s audience was of age when the movie Se7en came out and have seen The Godfather.

I was just hoping Margaret would go with him. What was the point of that entire hospital/sex education story line…it came to nothing other than an obvious attempt at irony when we discover at the end that Margaret is pregnant.

Exactly. And using the device that Rosetti and his boss were streetwise guys who would be wise to that sort of thing is a bullshit reason. If you are going to construct a narrative in a historical drama you have to connect all the points. If the audience has questions about how a particular plot twist happened given the information available to them, then the writers haven’t done their job.

That’s because Stephen Root turns every role he touches into gold.

seriously…he’s doing an outrageous amount of heavy lifting with that character. i can imagine how difficult that was to pull off…and the subtle, intelligent complexity of means contrasts nicely* with the hamfisted gyp character.

*by nicely i mean it’s ridiculous that gyp and means are included in the same show…it’s like having mcnugget appetizers for your pittsburgh rare strip.

I considered that but there is no implication or even hint that he did. In the next two episodes they may explain how Rosetti’s came to know of the plot (and in turn how Lansky and Luciano were able to convey it to him as was strongly suggested at the bocci ball courts) but leaving that unexplained in this episode is not a cliffhanger and it’s not clever. It’s just arrogant or lazy.

No it isn’t. The guy was warned that Nuchy was coming after him. He didn’t know to know the exact how, where and when. Knowing it was coming is enough to put him on alert. A guy like that doesn’t go anywhere without guys with him.
