Rob Gronkowski Broke His Forearm Blocking on an Extra Point Up 59-24
Rob Gronkowski broke his forearm late Sunday in New England’s 59-24 destruction of Indianapolis. The tight end had surgery and will be out about four weeks. He’ll return for the postseason.
How late in the game did the injury occur? New England was leading 52-24 and Tom Brady was inexplicably still in the game. I say inexplicably because there were less than six minutes remaining and the Colts were down 28.
Brady actually threw a 3rd down pass late in the drive to set up the final touchdown. Uncalled for? You decide. (Two weeks ago people took the Ravens to task for scoring on a fake field goal up 41-17 in the third quarter.)
Gronkowski didn’t play a snap on the drive, but actually came in to block on the extra-point! A reader thinks this is a screen grab of when the injury took place.
Does Jimmy Graham block on extra points? What about Antonio Gates? Tony Gonzalez? I’d love to see a breakdown of skill position stars who also block on kicks.
After the arguments about whether or not Gronk should have been in the game subside, a quick look at the playoff picture will show how much the loss really hurts: if he misses four games, that will mean Jets, Miami, Houston and San Francisco.
Is 3-1 conservative? The Pats get the Texans and 49ers at home, and both are night games. Unofficially, I think New England is 89-2 at home at night in December. The Jets stink and so do the Dolphins, so 4-0 isn’t out of the realm, but we’ll give them a loss, anyway.
Getting that No. 2 seed is crucial, because it means having to go on the road to Houston, Baltimore or Denver in the second round of the playoffs. The Ravens have a tough schedule, and the Broncos don’t, so one could speculate that the Gronk injury might cost New England the No. 2 seed. Instead of bye – home game in the playoffs, the Patriots could be looking at home game (maybe vs. Pittsburgh) – trip to Denver/Baltimore.

Football’s a rough sport.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
Pretty sure with only a 53-man roster, NFL teams don’t have enough spots for 2nd string special teams.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Gronkowski with a broken forearm wouldn’t drop as many balls as Brandon Pettigrew.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
I am in first place in a league with Gronk, MaGahee and McCoy on my team. These injuries combined with having Maryland and Rutgers join the B1G makes me want to punch babies.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Sigh.

From PK’s column:

Difference in faking a FG and getting first downs to keep the clock winding down right? No? Okay.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
Some people are sounding realllllly stupid today completely ignoring this fact.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
Wonder who those people are….
November 19th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Ravens are a game ahead and hold tiebreaker over the Pats, so 2 games ahead really and Texans are also 2 games ahead. Hard to make that up with or without Gronk.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Nah. Find it real interesting being described as ‘Brady slinging it around the field late in the 4th’ when in reality he threw the ball 2 times after the 10 minute mark, both short passes to move the chains and keep the clock moving. But, not to let that get in the way of some good faux outrage.

Does Jimmy Graham block on extra points? What about Antonio Gates? Tony Gonzalez? I’d love to see a breakdown of skill position stars who also block on kicks.
Jason Witten does, and so do both of Dallas’s other tight ends. Extra Point teams are generally made up of your biggest guys, and your biggest pass catching blockers. Some teams use OLB’s or guys with wide, wide wingspans on the outside, but it’s often starters.
Jimmy Graham might not, but he can’t block.
Starting safeties run down kicks. There’s only so many guys.
Why can’t you tell us if your team’s “star” tight end plays on XP?

November 19th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
agree that Ryan Mallett needs to see the field more often.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
I’d love to see a video of the play. I heard there was a scuffle afterward, and that he might have gotten his arm broken in a scuffle, not actually during the play.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Freak injury. Really sucks, but what can you do? The offense will be fine.
As a Pats fan, I’m much more concerned about them saying squat about Chandler Jones. That is a much bigger deal if he’s legitimately hurt.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Mnf is going to be a hoot
November 19th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
Not to mention you’d want your TE in there in case you want to run a fake. Kind of obvious if Gronk isn’t normally in, and then trots on the field late in a close game.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
I can only speak for the Vikings, but pretty much every starting TE they’ve had in my lifetime, including 6-time Pro Bowler Steve Jordan, was in to block on extra points.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Hernandez is ready to return no?
November 19th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
I’d love to see a breakdown of skill position stars who also block on kicks.
it’s too bad they don’t show games in your area.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
UNCALLED FOR!
November 19th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
Gronk dont trot
November 19th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
Hopefully they can ease him in against the practice squad on Thurs, and see how he responds.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Isnt it weird how immediately after the game, everyone knew what was wrong with Gronk, but Chandler Jones ceased to exist? Yeah I’m a bit worried.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
He struggled all of last week in practice. Can’t see how only 4 days later he’d be ready to go.
Thing is, Hernandez and Gronk are two completely different players that happen to play the same position. Gronk legitimately can do everything. He’s their best pass-catching TE, and their best blocking one. Hernandez is basically a WR in a TE’s body.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Brandon Pettigrew can’t block for shit.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Get ready for the Fells/Hooman show running wild on that Jets D!
November 19th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Ahh, the Jets fan could only dream of being up 59-24…
/sour grapes
November 19th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Yup. The offense might only put up 28 a game without Gronk. Without Jones, they’re going to give up more than that.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
I’ve come to realize that sentences similar to this one usually roughly translate to “I have no idea what the actual facts are, but I’m gonna talk out of my ass anyway”.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
My guess is high ankle sprain. He was in street clothes by the end of the game. Sucks, bad memories of Andre Carter from last year.
Hernandez will be back Thursday, but Gronk is the main weapon of the offense, so this doth blow.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Check that Pats schedule and get back to me on that.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
I hate the Patriots but anybody bitching about this as though it’s the Patriots fault is just laughable.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
Let’s ask Mr. Hernandez how that one is working out.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Does Jimmy Graham block on extra points? What about Antonio Gates? Tony Gonzalez? I’d love to see a breakdown of skill position stars who also block on kicks.
Are these rhetorical questions or do you just refuse to use Google?
November 19th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
My guess is high ankle sprain.
you guys understand that means “nearly broken leg,” right? That is an awful injury that they’d be better off just casting this guys up for 6 weeks on.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
Lots of typeface being used about the 4th best team in the 2nd best conference.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
OK, even if the criticism of Gronk being in on the PAT is laughable, wasn’t Brady in there up 28 with 4 mins. to go? I’m guessing Gronk was, too? So, the injury happen to have come on the PAT but could have easily come during a running play while running out the clock?
Correct me if I’m wrong. I understand that most coaches do this, and nearly all coaches are paranoid, seeing ways to lose that barely exist. But still…
November 19th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Read the post smarty.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Yes, Brady finished the drive that he started at around 8 minutes left. No, Gronk was not out there for that drive. Yes, these Colts led by Dan Orlovsky scored 21 points in the 4th quarter of last year’s ‘blowout’ and nearly one, so no, this isn’t THAT paranoid.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Ah, shit. ‘won’.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
Will the statistically obvious breakdown in karma come back to haunt the Patriots during the time of year when teams become clutchiness dependent?
November 19th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
michigan sucks.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
TBL with another in a long line of excellent short bus posts!
November 19th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
I don’t know about Gates or Gonzalez, but Graham does block on extra points.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Not really.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
ah, the “Belichick runs up the score” meme that refuses to die. I guess the Brady should’ve just taken a knee with eight minutes left.
I could be wrong, but I think he had his arm pinned when he was trying to get his hands up to block Sergio Brown, who continues to fuck the Patriots over. it was kind of a freak play — sometimes it happens to a benchwarmer, sometimes it happens to an All Pro. it happens in football.
I count one team being better, but okay.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
I have seen Graham on FG and extra points.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
and of course I mean “Brady” and not “the Brady”
November 19th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
No, no, I liked it the first time around.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
the brady doesnt need 8 minutes when he gets on his knees…there aint a sailor in san fran that’s lasted more than a minute.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
That’s the best you can do?
November 19th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
belicheck owns this dumbass decision.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
/team rich rod forever
November 19th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
MALAISE FOREVER
November 19th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
meh…that still sucks cuz i liked rich rod and thought michigan should’ve kept him around.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
if you coach in the Big Ten for three years and need triple overtime just to beat Illinois once, you probably shouldn’t be allowed to coach D1 football.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:45 PM
Better?
November 19th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
Please let this be sarcasm, because if not, youre an idiot.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
What if you coach Notre Dame, and you need double OT and a referee error to beat Pitt?
November 19th, 2012 at 4:49 PM
Serves them right for running it up on a cancer patient
November 19th, 2012 at 4:51 PM

November 19th, 2012 at 4:52 PM
Karma.
Live like a douche, go down like a douche.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:55 PM
And besides, he’s a “system’ TE so the next guy will be just as good.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:59 PM
Who would you say has had the least amount of talent at WR in their careers? Brady or Manning?
Had an argument with a friend yesterday on this.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:06 PM
Easily Brady.
Just working with those midget ex-gators puts him over the top.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:07 PM
sarcasm?
over the course of their careers, Manning has played with better skill position players and Brady has played behind better offensive lines.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:11 PM
sarcasm?
Not completely. He’s got serious talent but the Pats system definitely helps too. Put Tim Tebow in that position and he might do just as well.
/worms, can of … opened
November 19th, 2012 at 5:12 PM
Yeah I thought Brady to. Manning had Harrison and Wayne and even some nice years with Dallas Clark.
Brady seems to make recievers better than they are. They leave NE and become nobodies, or they are nobodies and come to NE and become real good.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:15 PM
There’s a big dropoff after Harrison and Wayne (Jerome Pathon? Austin Collie?). But Brady’s still had way less talent at WR (Moss for 2 years, Welker… Deion Branch? Troy Brown?)
November 19th, 2012 at 5:18 PM
it’s a tough debate, but id go with peyton. brady’s got flawless mechanics and throws one of the prettiest balls in the NFL, esp compared to some of peyton’s ducks but peyton id feel more comfortable with peyton behind center since he gets rid of the ball so quickly, his OL doesn’t have the time to get exposed. brady’s afforded ridiculous time in the pocket from mult WR/TE sets, often spread out, and MUCH better OL talent.
the dif b/w what brady’s OL has been like to what peyton’s worked with is fairly enormous. tarik glenn mightve been the only truly exceptional OLmen peyton played with before ryan clady this year (seems like millenia ago jeff saturday made that block on vince wilfork).
November 19th, 2012 at 5:22 PM
This is yuuuuuge, because it allows a GM to build essentially a run-blocking o-line. The first two years of his career, Edge James had like 3200+ yards on about a bazillion carries.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:24 PM
the Colts have also had Stokley and Garcon, who were pretty good for what they were (and I guess still are). that Harrison/Wayne combo still kind of trumps everything NE has thrown out there over the last 12 years.
I would disagree.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:24 PM
sucks we never got to see peyton/marshall faulk more tho. how unfair would that have been?
November 19th, 2012 at 5:27 PM
Ill never forget Marshall Faulk pretty much being used as a decoy in the Super Bowl by that fuckhead Martz. What a waste.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:29 PM
i always appreciated peyton/marhar/wayne more than brady/welker/moss because a) the pats ran the score up with a vengeance in a massholish fashion and b) the colts offense was always tactical football artistry whereas the pats had one unstoppable play they ran over and over and over.
i prefer real-time bill walsh over tecmo bowl bo jackson.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:37 PM
I like the diminishing returns at RB the Colts have had since they traded Faulk: first round picks on Edge (a beast until he blew out his knee), Addai (who was okay, but a big part of that SB win), and then Brown (kind of shitty).
Martz would go entire stretches at a time where he either forgot Faulk was on the team or he tried to prove that he didn’t need Faulk all that much (or a combo of both). I think Andy Reid learned how to incorporate McCoy in his offense from closely watching those Martz Rams teams; I still remember the double-OT playoff again against Carolina where the Rams made their comeback after giving the ball to Faulk on almost every play.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:43 PM
That Colts/Chiefs 2003 playoff game at Arrowhead was a friggin clinic from Peyton. Colts didn’t punt once.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:44 PM
for some reason, i remember exactly where i was and what i was doing while watching that. peyton was that good that day…absolutely flawless, even if the chef’s D was HORRIBLE during vermeil’s time there.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:53 PM
that was the week after they completely shredded Denver in the Wild Card game…didn’t punt in that game either. I think that was the game where Harrison dove for a catch, then got up and ran untouched for a TD despite being surrounded by four Broncos defenders
November 19th, 2012 at 6:56 PM
I like the diminishing returns at RB the Colts have had since they traded Faulk: first round picks on Edge (a beast until he blew out his knee),
this is a dumb thing to say. Ed James was not a diminishing return over Faulk, not for that team. And, he was on a HOF track, blowing the league up.
And, he had 1800 yard from scrimmage in his very last year there, before they just couldn’t pay him.
It’s silly to say anything about dimishing returns, unless he’s the last guy before they start diminishing.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:57 PM
now getting a 2nd and a 5th for Faulk isn’t so good. But that’s a completely different story.
November 19th, 2012 at 7:16 PM
Damn too bad I missed this one
November 19th, 2012 at 7:55 PM
late reply, but that was what I meant.
