Monday Night Football: The Backup Quarterback Bowl Between the Bears and 49ers
Chicago and San Francisco face off in what is a pretty important game for both teams in trying to secure a bye and home game during the divisional round. The tie last week put the 49ers a half game back of the Bears, so that tiebreakers won’t likely come into play. Getting the most wins certainly does, though, and the winner will be in much better shape.
Both, though, will face off without their starting quarterbacks as Cutler and Alex Smith join Michael Vick in missing this week with concussions. The Bears were horrid last year with Caleb Hanie in relief of Jay Cutler. They hope that Jason Campbell is a much better solution. Campbell is a tweener guy, good enough to start for a decent amount of teams, but also in backup range. If you dropped him on about six teams, he might be a better option. His issue has always revolved around making the dynamic pass and getting rid of the ball. He has the arm strength but is conservative. With the Bears, though, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially in a defensive game.
Colin Kaepernick is more of an unknown. He is a gazelle as a runner, but more erratic passing, though his career numbers on a small number of attempts has him at 61% and 7.8 yards per attempt. If he didn’t have tattoos everywhere, he is the quarterback that should be all over First Take. I expect Harbaugh to put him in positions to succeed and play to his strength, and for Kaepernick to use his legs and make some deep throws off rollouts.

Jeffrey makes a difference…couple screen passes work…bush runs for 50 and a score, no fumbles….forte catches a td pass….kaepernick folds in first start unless gore and hunter dominate running. A kaepernick bootleg td is to be expected
Bears 20 niners 17
November 19th, 2012 at 8:30 PM
Shut up stroke victim
November 19th, 2012 at 8:37 PM
Bright lights, big city. Let’s see if Kaepernick is more than just a gimmick running QB.
Bears 17 niners 13, just to be difficult.
Vez! Wassup, brotha?
November 19th, 2012 at 8:46 PM
Not much srod just watching myself be wrong about kaepernick
November 19th, 2012 at 8:47 PM
Being a Niners fan, I can tell you Kaep has a lot of potential. He can run, but he has a great arm as well. Excited to see what he can do against the Bears tonite.

Know u are located in CO, SROD but assuming you’ve been to Qualcomm.
Headed out there with family for Ravens game this weekend. Pre-game advice? Tailgate scene at stadium any good? Hit bars downtown up until game time?
November 19th, 2012 at 8:55 PM
Yes pick up 8 yards on two runs then throw when you need two
November 19th, 2012 at 9:02 PM
So does Alex Smith mysteriously disappear before the night is out?
November 19th, 2012 at 9:03 PM
where’s the dude who gets angry any time Kaepernick’s name is mentioned? Kid is dealin – Smith may be done if he keeps this up, throwing downfield is unheard of
November 19th, 2012 at 9:04 PM
Run the damn ball until they stop it
November 19th, 2012 at 9:05 PM
HVC, I’ve been to San Diego, but never to Qualcomm. There are some nice bars and restaurants downtown, and along the harbor.

Found this place in Coronado. Nice menu, a bit pricey but worth it.

Gruden: “how does Justin Smith get stronger with every year?”
I’m guessing the answer starts with “s” and ends in “teroids”
November 19th, 2012 at 9:09 PM
it looks like willis works out
November 19th, 2012 at 9:13 PM
Thanks for the rec, SROD.
1st time out there. My bro has been there a few times and said the downtown/Gaslamp District is a sweet area with some solid nightlife.
As its sandwich game between Stillers, fully expect Ravens to no show on Sunday.
November 19th, 2012 at 9:19 PM
Vez must be so proud that they just featured a SF lineman that went to Idaho
November 19th, 2012 at 9:22 PM
Im featuring a self employed writer that went to idaho
November 19th, 2012 at 9:24 PM
One of the best parts of a bears loss is the postgame radio show of ex bears doug buffone and ed obradovich. Crusty old timers get so worked up
November 19th, 2012 at 9:28 PM
49ers treating the Bears like the Bills and Jets
November 19th, 2012 at 9:28 PM
All backups are not created equal.
November 19th, 2012 at 9:28 PM
At least bears fans get a reminder of life without cutler tonight
November 19th, 2012 at 9:34 PM
All I ask is 2.2 points from Marshall, other than that the Niners can do what they want with the Bears.
November 19th, 2012 at 9:36 PM
bad news: Took the Bears +7.5.
Good news: Lead fantasy by 9, opponent has B Marshall, Bears D.
November 19th, 2012 at 9:36 PM
At least bears fans get a reminder of life without cutler tonight
Maybe I’m the only one, but I don’t think Cutler’s all that bad.
November 19th, 2012 at 9:39 PM
Cutler wouldnt make a bit of difference.
November 19th, 2012 at 9:40 PM
Cutler wouldnt make a bit of difference.
Once again I may be the only one, but I think he would.
November 19th, 2012 at 9:40 PM
Did that line really go up to +7.5? I checked before dinner and it was +5.5
November 19th, 2012 at 9:41 PM
Have you seen the Bears OL?
Aaron Rodgers wouldnt be doing jack in this game so far.
November 19th, 2012 at 9:41 PM
You might win that, had a bad feeling with Marshall coming into this. I’m hoping for garbage time production at this point.
November 19th, 2012 at 9:42 PM
willis and bowman pissed about shitty games last week
November 19th, 2012 at 9:50 PM
it must be pretty great if they promoted the line coach to offensive coordinator.
November 19th, 2012 at 9:52 PM
I made a comment about it earlier but it’s worth repeating since the state of Pennsylvania only sells beer by the case, which leaves me with a
case fullcouple of beers to think about it. Yuengling is made about 3 hours from here. This should be about the freshest beer I’ve ever tasted. But no, I forgot. This is NW PA. Fresh and delicious are not two words included in their vocabulary.November 19th, 2012 at 9:57 PM
Bears have -13 yards passing
November 19th, 2012 at 9:58 PM
I was trash talking vladdy bc i only needed 5 pts from bush and gould to beat him
November 19th, 2012 at 10:01 PM
Berman just said that the Ravens “win games the old-fashioned way,” based on their performance against a Pittsburgh team that was playing an injured backup quarterback. good hustle, Boomer.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:08 PM
I know Smith is Harbaugh’s boy, but in all seriousness is there any way he starts after today?
November 19th, 2012 at 10:22 PM
Never mind, there’s now way. Smith is donezo.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:26 PM
So, about that best defense in the NFL some were talking about, the Bears…
November 19th, 2012 at 10:26 PM
311 yards Niners
31 yards Bears
November 19th, 2012 at 10:34 PM
that talk about the bears being the best defense seemed over the top – defensive scores are nice, but shouldn’t be counted as some supplement to the ability to just stop the other team (turnovers are fickle, as 49ers learned in NFCCG)
November 19th, 2012 at 10:34 PM
I know Smith is Harbaugh’s boy, but in all seriousness is there any way he starts after today?
I recall a time when after a few torrid consecutive starts, legends such as Kelly Holcomb, Derek Anderson and Joe Flacco were guys you could win with. You give stay-up-all night NFL defensive coordinators enough film, they will see how your coach has been protecting you and then seriously fuck with you. The franchise guys either have enough tools to defeat this or a particular skill like speed or a cannon and enough other attributes to win more than they lose. So no, let’s not get that bust ready in Canton yet for this guy. My theory is after 4 weeks of film on you, the defenses will be wise to any QB and can start poking holes in your game.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:41 PM
Excellent post.
You see guys come in short term and win quite a bit. The book is not out on you so to speak. Look at Chad Henne yesterday. Matt Flynn last year. Remember Scott Mitchell?
When a guy comes in and has success right away, it is usually not sustainable at that level once the film is out and your tendencies and such are exposed.

nobody’s saying the guy is an All Pro. it’s not completely unreasonable to wonder if he’d be better than Alex Smith.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:48 PM
Somebody test Aldon Smith for midi-chlorians.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:49 PM
Agreed he shouldn’t be a total chump though. I wont pretend to be a pro talent evaluator but he was chosen pretty high and has a coach that is good w/ QB and knows how to scheme, plus legit pros at skill positions. That should give him a chance to succeed.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:50 PM
great. i’ll lose on the Bears, and maybe fantasy, too. That marshall TD didn’t help. 65-63. blast, no way i can hang on
November 19th, 2012 at 10:50 PM
The one thing that stuck out with me is Kaeps throws down the field.
Smith is reluctant to trust his recievers and throw anything over 15 yards. On the first drive tonite Kaepernick was throwing deep.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:51 PM
Didnt your buddy have the Bears D?
What if they give up another TD?
November 19th, 2012 at 10:53 PM
Thing is SF is playing to win this year. Let’s say they make it to the NFC title game, this guy will have like 9 starts on him then? Not sure if that gives you a better chance than Smith. I think you just let Smith get healthy and then bring him back unless this guy is throwing for 300 a week.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:56 PM
Maybe they let Kaepernick play next week to give Smith more time to recover, they are playing the Saints D.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:59 PM
that’s the tough decision I’m glad I won’t have to make. I will say that at this point you pretty much know what you’re getting out of Smith, and it’s not as though he can singlehandedly win a game for you.* Kaepernick is definitely kind of a wild card, but like DeusExMachina said he’ll probably give defenses more to worry about.
* – unless it’s against the New Orleans defense, I guess
November 19th, 2012 at 10:59 PM
ish just got real on Revolution what a show
November 19th, 2012 at 11:04 PM
Dumbest show I’ve seen this year, made it 70 minutes. You are the first person I know that likes it, except some dude my wife works with whom I can’t stand. I hope for your sake it improved since the first two episodes.
As for Kaepernick starting next week, I was wondering if he had eclipsed Alex Smith’s best single game passer rating mark. Nope, and Smith has a couple of really high games this year. I don’t think there’s a chance he touches a start again without injury. Unfortunately.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:07 PM
Revolution was very much like reading a blog post or article that is so dumb that it is insulting that it expects you to buy into that stupidity.
No idea what it’s been like since episode 2.25, so don’t take this as a commentary on TBL’s comment, but that was my impression through that point of the show… “hey stupid fucking people will read anything, who cares if it makes sense”.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:10 PM
For me, I would just be relieved if my team’s backup played well in a spot start. Plenty of time for QB controversies later.
This SF pass rush is outta control. Call the National Guard!
November 19th, 2012 at 11:20 PM
Jmac you’re the first person Ive ever seen say something good about Revolution.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:28 PM
when the world zigs, JMac zags.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:28 PM
Kaepernick lived in the same town Im from til he was 4.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:29 PM
Bears complete clown frauds, that’s what an Alabama-level weak schedule gets you.

Dondelinger: Welcome to Remedial Science 1A. My wife recently passed away. I thought that maybe teaching would ease my loneliness.
Homer: Will this be on the test?
Dondelinger: No!

The bright blue flames indicate this was a particularly sweet donut.
