Max Wittek: Meet the USC Backup QB Who Can Keep Notre Dame Out of the BCS Title Game
Max Wittek, the 6-foot-4, 19-year-old redshirt freshman for USC, will fill in for injured Matt Barkley in the biggest game of the college football season. What’s at stake: A Notre Dame win vaults the Irish into the BCS title game. In that scenario, everyone wins. The casual fan will be drawn into the game because everyone knows a little about Notre Dame (and many will tune in just to root against the Irish). The guess here is Notre Dame in the title game would generate the largest ratings of the BCS era.
A loss? Chaos, and perhaps, another all SEC-title game, which nobody outside of the South wants.
So no pressure, Max.
High school: Mater Dei, the QB factory in California. Enrolled at USC a semester early because he graduated high school early. He spent some of his childhood in San Francisco before his mom got spooked by the 1994 earthquake and they moved to Connecticut. He stayed there until 9th grade, when he moved back to California.
Not only did Wittek go to high school with Barkley, but he also used the same QB coach, Steve Clarkson, the guru who was recently profiled in the New Yorker.
In the Class of 2011, Wittek was the 3rd rated “pro-style QB” by Rivals, behind Florida’s Jeff Driskel and Cody Kessler, who also plays for USC (and will back up Wittek this weekend).
Notre Dame Connection: His dad, Kurt, is a “high-profile real estate developer.” His business partner? Joe Montana, the legendary ND QB. Montana is the one who told Wittek to send his son to Clarkson.
Recruiter: Wittek, using his Connecticut roots, is the USC player who alleged helped sell Silas Redd on transferring to USC.
USC career totals: 8-of-9, 95 yards, one TD.
Last week, some Las Vegas lines had USC as a 3-point favorite over Notre Dame. Following the UCLA loss and Barkley’s injury, Notre Dame is now favored by six.

The unknown factor scares the crap out of me.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:34 PM
He’s always been my favorite player.
/Team Wittek
November 19th, 2012 at 5:36 PM
his death will be glorious.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:39 PM
My God I hope Georgia beats ND in the national title game.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:40 PM
This kid has the physical tools to get it done.
He lacks experience though.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:44 PM
SC fan here…we’ve sucked donkey balls all year. I think Barkley’s one of the most overrated and unathletic qb’s I’ve ever seen play college football. His stats are great because of all the YAC Marqise Lee and Robert Woods produce. Long story short, I am glad the Barkley era is over and this new kid will get some experience.
F**k the irish!
November 19th, 2012 at 5:46 PM
Brandon Huffman, a national recruiting analyst for scout.com, gave his scouting report on Wittek’s senior year at Mater Dei:
He has tremendous vision and always wants to make the big play before checking down to his shorter routes. He has a quick release and a strong arm. He struggles with accuracy at times, but shows poise under pressure and a willingness to hang in the pocket and take a hit. A gun-slinger mentality, Wittek likes the high risk, high reward throws.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:47 PM
And the fact that pretty much nobody expects USC to win this game, is just perfect for a Notre Dame loss.
They surprise you when they are the underdogs, but are underwhelming as a favorite.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:48 PM
thought this said “sun-ginger mentality.” got concerned there for a sec before i remembered they make waterproof spf50.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:51 PM
Totally agree. Losing to UCLA a week before facing Notre Dame did Notre Dame zero favors. A win over the No. 1 Irish would be a massive season saver.
That factor alone should be terrifying to Notre Dame fans.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:51 PM
Are you aware the game is on ESPN this year? It will be hard to top ABC’s number from the USC-Texas game.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:53 PM
Are you kidding me with that shot Butler. Wow! What a win already.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:54 PM
Even an offense as shitty as NDs will score on USC.
Although Texas would have some say, no college program does less with more than USC these past few years.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:55 PM
Are there any actual Notre Dame grads around here?
I see a lot of you dudes talking up ND on Twitter but did anybody actually, you know, attend?
November 19th, 2012 at 6:01 PM
I think most of them watched Rudy more than once. That’s almost like having gone there.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:03 PM
Figures. He was so small!
November 19th, 2012 at 6:05 PM
best friend went to ND, player soccer, was a team captain. I’ve been to visit. Good times.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:07 PM
I thought Jersey went there.
The “you can’t be a real fan unless you went there” shit is so fucking stupid. Nothing more dour than the person who says you can’t be a college sports fan until you’re eighteen. What sense does that make?
/alma mater has won three national championships in the last seven years
November 19th, 2012 at 6:07 PM
Seriously. FUCK USC.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:08 PM
I spent the first ten years of my life in Chicago and Indianapolis so naturally I grew up a ND fan. Dad didn’t take me up there once. Father of the century.

I know a couple guys. One is a doctor and one of the leading Alzheimer’s researchers in the country and the other guy is a lawyer in DC.
However, 99% of Notre Damn fans i know are fans because they are Catholic and frontrunners/band wagonneers.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:09 PM
I won’t take it that far but this isn’t ‘Nam, Smokey. There are rules.
- You attended for any amount of time
- Family member attended
- Does best friend count?
- Lived within 50 miles?
- Been to 10+ games
November 19th, 2012 at 6:11 PM
Shoutout to the parents who went to small liberal arts schools in upstate NY precluding me from being a real fan of anything other than college hockey.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:13 PM
By your definition the freshman at Duke who never cared about basketball (read: Asian) that goes to games their first year is a bigger/better/truer college sports fan than most people. That, my friend, is moronic.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:13 PM
Don’t worry Mole, from what I understand, attendance of no fewer of 10 games will make you fan-eligible.
/wanking
November 19th, 2012 at 6:14 PM
My father attended, my mother lived 2 miles away until she was 22 and currently works there, I grew up in nearby Granger and I’ve been to probably 30 games by now. Would’ve loved to go, but didn’t have the grades or the money.
And speaking as someone who picked us to lose to Michigan State and Oklahoma and was terrified going into the Michigan and Pitt games…I’m 100 percent confident ND is going to crush USC, while at the same time scared that I am so confident. Sports fan paradox.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:17 PM

I agree with this, Mole. But you gotta understand the faux internet hate of Notre Dame. I’m gonna guess 90% of KU fans in Kansas haven’t ever been in Lawrence because of the hippies and gays and drugs and liberals.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:18 PM
You could also have chosen (or, as a child, forced your parents) to move within 50 miles of your team, regardless of family/job/etc. solely to qualify as a “fan”
November 19th, 2012 at 6:19 PM
I do 100%, trust me.
However, at the same time, for my generation of those 30 and under, not exactly been the easiest life of fandom. Nothing to be excited about since 1993.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:19 PM
If you were an avid drinker of a beer that is made in another state, and then you went to visit in that state less than 4 hours away from where they made that beer, wouldn’t you expect it to be the crispest, freshest beer you’ve ever had? Fuck you, Yeungling. I’m 3 hours away. But god dammit. I fucking swear every time I buy it here it is the skunkiest tasting beer I’ve ever had..asides from Molson’s. Fuck you, Canada.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:20 PM
I do get that the only thing separating the national ND fan base and the same for the Lakers and Yankees is winning since the first Bush administration though.

MODEL NOTRE DAME FAN RIGHT HURR!
/Ritty
November 19th, 2012 at 6:21 PM
For real. Nothing like rooting for a team that’s garbage for two decades while dealing with a bunch of people who hate them because of success you never got to see. At least now I get to see some wins while hearing all about how they suck/are irrelevant/would get smashed by half the SEC/etc.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:22 PM
My freshman year of college I got tickets for the Gator Bowl to see ND play NC State, was going to drive down for it. Three days prior, transmission drops out FUCK YOU SABLE DESIGNER.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:23 PM
jeebus.

Two friends went there, including one’s younger brother. When the younger brother was a senior, I drove up from NOLA with his brother for a visit (14 hour drive). We stayed for a few days and took in a game. They figured a way to sneak me into the student section too. I got bench pressed by the crowd a couple times. Fun times all around.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:24 PM
Cracking up.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:31 PM
I like the usc yellow jersey. Pee shirts
November 19th, 2012 at 6:32 PM
my wife wore a plaid skirt once kinda like that catholic schoolgirl look. that qualifies me to root for ND over Southern Cal, no?
November 19th, 2012 at 6:35 PM
guess im not an OSU fan then.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:36 PM
honestly, Ritty did you a favor.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:38 PM
Several grandparents, both parents, many uncles/cousins, both brothers, wife, wife’s sisters, brother’s wife and her siblings, and probably more went to PSU.
And I’ve been to a few games.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:39 PM
whatevs…ive been thru enough heartbreak it’s hard to give a shit.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:41 PM
What if you are a fat fuck and you watch games from a lawn chair with your beast of a wife and other fat fucks?
/bammer fan?
November 19th, 2012 at 6:42 PM
imagine that you meet all five of the Ritty Fan Qualifications like I do with Tennessee. I’m stuck, bro, stuck. I’ll never be able to root for anyone else. you, however, are still a free agent and may pursue fandom at any institution you’d like. live well and prosper, young one.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:48 PM

I can’t believe your dad prevented you from seeing the wonderfulness that is Gary, Ind.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:50 PM
oh, no shit? in that case, i choose ohio state…
ok, i agree im the worst type of college football fan. i dont care about anything osu other than football, state pride, TBDBITL, jesse owens and jack nicklaus.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:52 PM
dont care about anything osu other than football, Spencer
Tis true. I’ve never seen him give a damn about OSU basketball even though they’ve been really good. I never even bothered to talk shit with him before or after KU’s two wins over them last season. It would have been like shouting in the wind in a field in North Dakota.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:55 PM
Ed Reed getting suspended and hit with a $400,000 fine for that nothing hit is Commendant Goddell’s most egregious punishment yet. Go fuck yourself, Roger.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:56 PM
$400,000 fine
!?!?!?
November 19th, 2012 at 6:58 PM
I assume that’s his game check and he’s suspended?
November 19th, 2012 at 6:58 PM
Oh, that is his game check.
November 19th, 2012 at 6:59 PM
Being suspended for a game without pay. Reed makes over $400k per game.
November 19th, 2012 at 7:00 PM
ed reed is playing for a discount.
November 19th, 2012 at 7:00 PM
It’s his game check, which is no different than a fine. How is this allowed to stand? That hit was just as much Sanders’ fault as it was Reeds, and it certainly wasn’t dirty. Hell it was barely illegal.
November 19th, 2012 at 7:03 PM
It really was thoughtless to have his head in the same vicinity as that overrated cheap shot artist.

Typical Pennsylvania
November 19th, 2012 at 7:08 PM
i believe typical PA would have a “yinz” and vicinity spelled “vinsinty.”
November 19th, 2012 at 7:08 PM
Ed Reed is one of the cleanest players in the league. It’s not his fault Sanders ducked when Reed arrived. The flag was stupid at the time but it’s one you just swallow and chalk up to typical officiating incompetence/targeting. But to look at the tape and then make a determination to suspend the man after the fact borders on bias. There is simply no case to be made that the hit was dirty.
November 19th, 2012 at 7:16 PM
ed reed is playing for a discount.
That damn discount double check commercial influences 1st graders way more than I’m comfortable with. I went on my kid’s field trip last week and they were all discount double checking. 1st graders can’t even buy insurance.
November 19th, 2012 at 7:25 PM
Been to USC-ND games in Los Angeles and in South Bend. There’s a huge difference between the two sets of ND fans who go to these games. The subway alums in the LA game are usually white trash and/or catholic, so naturally, they root for ND. They are about as vile as you can get.
ND fans in South Bend are great and very classy.
November 19th, 2012 at 7:49 PM
Great commenter name, btw
November 19th, 2012 at 8:14 PM
Fwiw the suspension was for repeated offenses i believe

class of ’96
November 20th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Class of 2000. I don’t think that gives me any special right to cheer for ND over a non-alumni fan, though. The more the merrier, I say!
The entire idea is pretty stupid, anyway. When a football team wins, it’s not like any of us accomplished anything – alumni or non-alumni of any school. What gets me is people who use “us” when referring to a team.
