Maryland and Rutgers Could Bring Big Ten Network Extra $100 Million Per Year in Subscriber Fees
What would Maryland and Rutgers bring to the Big Ten? A lot of television revenue, potentially. The conference thinks it can parlay Maryland and Rutgers into getting the Big Ten Network onto basic cable packages in major cities along the I-95 corridor. According to SI’s Pete Thamel, that could end up being a $100 million or more per year windfall for the conference.
This sounds counterintuitive. It’s hard seeing Rutgers fan support being used as a wedge in the New York market, when combined Jets and Giants support could not get the NFL Network on Time Warner Cable until this season. That said, the Big Ten deserves some benefit of the doubt in this realm. Jim Delany has kept the conference one step ahead when it comes to business issues. Their next TV rights agreement could leave each Big Ten team on par with Texas in terms of TV revenue.
They seem to know what they are doing, when not picking division names. While we’re on divisions, hopefully the Big Ten will reconsider East/West division realignment.

Rutgers won’t bring in nearly as many households in NY as everyone seems to think.
But then again, any amount is more than they currently have, so I can understand the appeal.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Nope.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Jim Delaney is a genius. He should also petition that OSU become eligible this year.

Hey Ty –
How’s your “No” comment from Saturday morning look now?

November 19th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Maryland just approved the move.

November 19th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Can’t believe Maryland voted to go. That means Rutgers also goes and UConn to the ACC most likely happening very fast.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:53 AM

Agreed. This smells like the Big 10 getting too cute for it’s own good.

chrome helmets would bring some joizy class to the b10
November 19th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
Michigan, MSU, OSU, PSU, Rutgers, MD, and one of the Indiana schools in the East, everyone else in the west.
//Thinks the B1G isn’t stopping at 14 teams.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
Can’t believe Maryland voted to go. That means Rutgers also goes and UConn to the ACC most likely happening very fast.
That puts a pretty big dent in the Big East’s ability to command a good TV contract too.

//Thinks the B1G isn’t stopping at 14 teams.
Why would they? This is the next step in the inevitable march to super conferences.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Maryland’s board approved the move unanimously

November 19th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
I only see the ACC going after one team, probably UConn. They just need one team to get football to 14.
Syracuse, Pitt and Notre Dame (in everything but football) will already be part of the ACC.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
You missed on the part about Fox Sports buying the YES network. Packaging YES and BTN would make it onto the base NYC cable package.
/Now for Virginia and UNC
November 19th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Sucks for BC, VT, and Miami. They go for the early cash grab, and then watch as their conference gets decimated around then.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
I hate everything about this
November 19th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Hey Ty –
How’s your “No” comment from Saturday morning look now?
/Silly
I’ll stick up for Duffy on this one. That news came completely out of left field on Saturday. My first thought was “no” as well.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Comparatively, how much is aTm & Mizzou expected to bring annually?
November 19th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Fuck them. They’re the reason West Virginia had to join the fucking Big XII and have a stupid travel schedule.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
So when the Big 12 calls, how quickly does FSU answer the phone?
November 19th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
It was out there a couple hours before those comments were made Saturday. I saw two Scout guys with the news, although still in “sources” mode. Can’t say it was shocking either. Those that thought the merry-go-round was over were just fooling themselves.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
As a Maryland alum, I hate this move but realize it is inevitable with the current cash grab environment. The only positive I see is being in a more stable conference. Perhaps a side benefit will be the expedited departure of Edsall for a real coach.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
People on twitter keep talking about UNC moving. Think that would kill college basketball for me for good.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
That’s the only possible plus here.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
I would guess that aTm’s football TV reach is greater than Maryland’s and Rutgers’ combined, despite the market sizes. (there are 25 million people in Texas, btw)

There is proabaly the same amount of Rutgers fans as there are Islander fans in the NY/Jersey area. That amount is zero.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
I do too. I’m a total traditionalist. Maryland not in the ACC? Unfathomable.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
They pick up, but only to say, “Stop calling, we’re trying to keep the lines clear for the SEC commish.”
November 19th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
Big Ten goes to 16 – Uva and UNC?
SEC goes to 16 – VaTech and NC State?
Big 12 goes to 16 – FSU, Clemson, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Miami?
November 19th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
When MD and FSU voted against the raised exit fee, it was only a matter of time it seemed.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
If I cared about Maryland football at all, I might feel differently. As a Terps basketball fan, though, this is a disaster. No more Maryland-Duke showdowns, no more Carolina meetings, no more tradition. Just…fuck.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
So what are the odds the big ten grabs another acc team to force ND to join up?
November 19th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
So, does the Big East try to replace Rutgers in football, or stand pat and just try to grab Xavier and/or Butler for basketball after UConn leaves?
November 19th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
Last week I went out to one our offices that was literally across the parking lot from the Nassau Colliseum, and I heard two guys talking about the Islanders moving, and how it sucks for all the people that work the arena.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
There is proabaly the same amount of Rutgers fans as there are Islander fans in the NY/Jersey area. That amount is zero.
Has nothing to do with how many fans. It is how many tvs.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
No way they split UNC/Duke, right? I mean, I knwo basketball pretty much means nothing for these conf realignments, but that’s got to be the one pairing they can’t touch.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Uhhhh….there are lots and lots of Rutgers alum and fans who live in Central and North Jersey. My office is filled with them. Middle and upper class alum too. NJ media market is divided between Philly in the South and New York in the North. Big Ten now will be able to negotiate with Comcast/Verizon/Time Warner/Cablevision and get huge increase. Also don’t forget the amount of Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State alums in the SE PA/NJ/NY area.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Yeah, I was talking basketball. Like everyone else, I don’t give a fuck about Maryland football.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
Agreed. The conversations with WVU and Pitt always seemed closer to a deal than this could ever possibly be.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
Maybe Maryland and Duke can work out some kind of non-con arrangement every year. They could be the protected opponent in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
I was going to say the same thing, but I honestly don’t think the majority of those people would go out of their way to watch a Rutgers game on TV, so it’s not going to affect ratings.
This, however, is a significant factor.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
At this point, I think Jim Delaney and many of the B1G AD’s would prefer seeing ND left to play in the remnants of the Big East.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
hey people, the sports themselves will not change. the action will still be awesome
November 19th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
B1G lacrosse just got a lot stronger
/stolen from my twitter feed
November 19th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
You’d be surprised. I know my wife (Rutgers alum) tries to watch when Rutgers is on. The upper management of my office all either watch or go to the games.
This is majorly discounted by a lot of people here. I know a lot of Penn State or Michigan alum around me.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
//Thinks the B1G isn’t stopping at 14 teams.
Yep. I’ll say this though. A lot of talk goes to a 16-team “superconference”. At some point, the talk will become of a 20-team “megaconference”. Why not? It’s absurd, unneccessary and also – quite possible.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
To quote the one and only Nino Brown. Maryland to the ACC…
“Money talks, and bullshit runs a marathon. So, see ya and I wouldn’t want to be ya.”
/NewJackCity’d
November 19th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Could the Big Ten call on UConn as well if they are looking to go to 16 teams? Last summer there were rumblings of Rutgers and/or Syracuse going with UConn to Big Ten. Not sure if that could happen but it doesn’t sound like anyone saw Maryland and Rutgers cash grab either.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
I do believe that Ty Duffy dismissed this rumor as nonsense yesterday
This falls on Debbie Yow’s inability to run an athletic department.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
If this means dropping a shittier non-conf game against West Texas, then I’m all for it. Make as much of the schedule as possible be conference games and one awesome out of conference. The playoff format opens the door to minimizing the self-immolation.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
This is key. Rutgers doesn’t bring the NYC market, OSU, Michigan and Penn State do (ND would have, too and easier, which is why Rutgers was always involved with the ND talk).
/But with the packaging of of YES and BTN, almost a moot point.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
Meh, that rivalry always meant more to Maryland. I could see Duke calling it off or forcing it to a neutral site. Also if Syracuse could leave the Big East I could see UNC leaving the ACC without Duke. If you’re a fan this sucks.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
Exactly. I’m pretty sure 48% of PSU students, and 35% of tOSU, are from Jersey.
/awful
November 19th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
No way. Brings nothing to the table (TV markets, research), just another mouth to feed.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
Yep. I’ll say this though. A lot of talk goes to a 16-team “superconference”. At some point, the talk will become of a 20-team “megaconference”. Why not? It’s absurd, unneccessary and also – quite possible.
At this point, I’ve accepted this as an eventuality. It seems like all trends are moving in this direction. Schools who realize this and have middling programs should really be trying to sell themselves by emphasizing swift improvement and climbing up the conference ladder to make themselves attractive targets.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
UConn does have a deal with SNY to broadcast football and men and women’s basketball. Just wondering if this is a link that could pave a way to the Big Ten instead of the ACC.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
Jersey people are like cockroaches. They’re everywhere, and could survive a nuclear holecaust.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
No.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
Exactly. It’s like Minnesota getting fired up to play Michigan or “Ohio State week” in West Lafayette* during the fall.
* = not really sure if Purdue has an Ohio State week.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
The only redeeming thing about UConn is if they do well, ESPN takes notice. Because there’s nothing else near Bristol.

This is true.
Nuclear holecaust is a way to describe Snooki’s vag.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
lol at Maryland fans thinking Duke or anyone else actually gives a shit about them.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
It would be awful, but hey at least UNC would be seen as the assholes that destroyed the best basketball conference every assembled.
If UNC leaves Duke should pick up the phone and ask Michael Slive if he’d be interested in becoming a basketball powerhouse.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Does these moves put the Big 10 below the Big East and ACC as a football conference, based on “median strength” as calculated by the computers?
/only half joking. it might be close.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
So Maryland is like the Texas A&M of the Eastern seaboard? This is all very interesting.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Serious question, assuming the ACC falls apart, where does Duke go? I think they get left behind, which goes to show how little basketball means in the great scheme of things.
/Sun Belt would become a beast in BB, though
November 19th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
The only real downside for me as a football fan is now with 6 division games, unless they go to 9 conference games a year you’ll only play Iowa, Minny, Neb once every 3 or 4 years.
Wait, thats awesome, screw those flyover pig fucking states.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Let’s not pretend that Maryland and UNC football are so much more important than Duke football.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Hold on, are people saying that Maryland leaving means a definite collapse for the ACC? Only major conference that legitmately is on the threshold is Big East.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
im so confused on the math regarding these figures…whatever.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Would there be a new conference created, comprised of good basketball schools with awful football programs? Duke, Villanova, Georgetown, maybe UConn, et al?
November 19th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
Depending on how the redo Big 10 divisions, there will be a fight to be in the east. Outside of Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania, there’s not a lot of homegrown talent in the Big 10 footprint. East opens up Jersey and Balto-DC corridor.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Yeah I’m confused by this as well. UNC leaving would absolutely destroy it. But Maryland, and potentially FSU, would not. They’ll grab someone else to make up the numbers but if they hold on to UNC they’re not going anywhere.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
didnt realize it was possible to give less of a shit about the ACC/big east, and you proved me wrong with this hypothetical.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
I’m horribly biased having grown up with season tickets to everything Maryland and being a student there now, but I’m less than thrilled about the whole thing.
That said, I get it. My dad is flipping the fuck out (which is actually pretty funnny), it’s honestly the smart move. But still, FUCK.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
That was pretty evident once UConn got left in the cold during yhg the Big East realignment.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
It’s called the Big Ten.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
I like it. A nice November weekend in DC complete with kicking Maryland’s ass, thats a solid vacation.
Only worry is that PSU generally owns northern VA/Maryland/NJ recruiting. Will open shit up for OSU/Michigans.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
No, I’m saying that by holding off, those schools could have gotten much sweeter deals elsewhere. You don’t think if VT/Miami was still in the Big East they Big 12/SEC wouldn’t have tripped over themselves to take them?
November 19th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
UNC isnt going anywhere without Duke. They are like a combo deal.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
UNC and Duke will be part of the 20-team Big 10s.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
And it’s Metro-accessible.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
less than thrilled? it’s not like you’re the sun belt big dogs going to the SEC…maryland’s a middle-tier athletic dept making a lateral move that makes them more money. what is there possibly to be upset about?
November 19th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
KVV said it best: its like your parents divorcing when you’re a kid. You understand it, but you still can’t help being angry at that other whore.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
I know, I dont even have to drive. I can get wasted (well, as wasted as fathers are allowed to be in the middle of the day).
November 19th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
If I were a Maryland basketball fan, and the ACC stays intact other than this move (and maybe FSU), I’d be fucking furious.
I’d also kill myself for being a Maryland basketball fan.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
There are hunders and hunders of people burning their Under Armor shit in the oval outside the union in College Park. And by that amount, I mean nobody, actually.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Long term, the ACC’s TV deal is HORRIBLE, Swofford got taken to the cleaners. So if FSU, Clemson, or VT see a chance to move I assume they would, that could kill the ACC.
That’s part of what motivated all of this, fear of what would happen if they left and got good spots and Maryland was just screwed. They don’t have the cash to do that with how insanely broke the department is.
Also, fuck that cunt Debbie Yow. This is her fault in the end.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
I don’t think anyone would be falling over anything to take VT. If Miami was in the Big 12 or Big 10, the travel costs alone would offset the extra change they would get. SEC is only other viable option and we already know Florida refuses to let another Florida school in the conference otherwise Miami would already be in it.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
why?
/serious question, don’t know
November 19th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
I could see this with NC State similar to UVa-VT (depending on how higher education works in NC), but Duke is a private school.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
But Maryland will be bringing those cool unis to the Big 10. Wonder how many Big 10 schools will start wearing Under Armor.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Everyone is different. Tradition means a lot to some people.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
It’s for sentimentality more than anything. Hell, I can’t even begin to say how much I’ll miss the ACC Tourney every year. Like I said, I get it.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Loss of tradition, inferior basketball, increased propensity for bovine fornication
November 19th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
im sorry, but “tradition” does not fly a week after playing football in “black ops” uniforms.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
No longer have the self created and cherished rivalry. Duke won’t be giving them the time of day. Also a ton of national exposure to pimp to recruits. Aint nobody watching the Big Ten tourney.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
It’s nearly a 2 mile walk from the Metro to Byrd.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:44 AM

November 19th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
That’s actually pretty perfect.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
My anger is more basketball based than anything, by a good amount.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
That give you time to break out the bottle of whiskey and get ready for the game. Amateur Maryland fans…
November 19th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from realignment, it’s that travel costs mean less than basketball tradition.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
No one cares about Maryland football. If you’re struggling to understand why fans are mad, keep that in mind. Most of them like Maryland basketball.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Duke and UNC hate each other, but they would never split up. Playing each other OOC every year would not suffice, because conference bragging rights have to stay intact.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
What’s going to hurt is when other schools come in and take all the hot basketball prospects out of Baltimore away from Maryland. Wait, oh. Nevermind.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
I’m getting wrecked tomorrow night before the game to drown my sorrows over this.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
this is a divorce where your mom is trading up from a dickhead husband who doesn’t make shit and doesn’t provide much to an old rich guy who’ll treat her like shit, but will provide a much better standard of living.
and, much like the kid in this hypothetical, maryland would be ignored either way so it’s kind of a moot point.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Tailgating >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> walking from the ghetto ass Green Line
November 19th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Until last year that joke would have been stunningly accurate. But Turgeron is doing a much better job with the in-state talent.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Enough for UNC to leave potentially $20 million per year on the table?
November 19th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Only if the travel costs don’t offset the bottom line. Also factor in Miami is not the best performer in colder climates. Again, ACC will affect this somewhat but going to Big 12/ Big Ten would magnify it. Miami wanted in the SEC, but those yocal, jort-wearing, cow fuckers at Florida were not going to let it happen. They blocked us and F$U from joining.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
oh cmon…if oklahoma/nebraska and texas/aTm split up, UNC and duke could.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Yes, despite recent chaos in their athletic department, there is one thing the big boosters and people involved with Carolina value just as much as money and that is tradition.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Maryland students are horrible at supporting their teams.

November 19th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
No one cares about Maryland football.
Maryland, welcome to the Big 10. I’d like you to meet somebody. Hey, Indiana, come on over and say hi to our new team here in the BiG 10.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
Yeah that’s why I think they stay.
ACC just needs to bend over for ND football at this point.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
This, even as a student now, pisses me off. What the fuck are you all doing on a fucking Monday night? Probably not homework, so walk across campus to the game. The team’s good this year, dammit!

And over at the punch bowl picking his nose is Illinois. And there is Purdue passed out in that chair.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
Enjoy the stabbiness.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
They already did, which is why ND treated them like the Big East. ND’s not joining a conference, ACC, Big Ten or Big 12. ACC was the only one weak enough football wise that would allow ND in on ND’s terms.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:55 AM

cleet…i think you’re underselling OU/nebraska and texas/aTm, BIG time. those were rivalries every bit on the level of unc/duke (with obviously less media fanfare).
if the conference blows up, itd be a much more real possibility.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Fitting that even in mentioning shitty Big 10 programs, Minnesota is an afterthought.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
And over at the punch bowl picking his nose is Illinois. And there is Purdue passed out in that chair.
LOL. It’s funny you see, as they are good at nothing.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
This. Maryland is a charter member of the ACC. If you can’t understand why Maryland fans would be upset with this move then you place no value in history, tradition, rivalries, etc. Go ahead and poo-poo all of that, but it still means something to a lot of people. Pull Ohio St. out of the Big 10, dump them in the PAC-12 and see how people in Ohio respond.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Not everyone can have beautiful rolling fields of tailgating, but drinkin is drinkin. Got a job to do.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Even as a Texas Ex I don’t find UT-aTm at the level of Duke-UNC. However, growing up OU-Nebraska was epic. It’s still the one rivalry whose death saddens me the most.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
If the conference blows up I think Duke/UNC package deal for basketball is a big moneymaker as opposed to getting one on their own.
November 19th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Rutgers gives AD authority to accept any invite
November 19th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
this party’s so much more fun when penn state and ohio state arent on house arrest.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
There are bars on the way, though. Not going straight to the stadium.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
I find it amusing that Minnesota’s best receiver is a walk-on. Or I guess now their former best receiver.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
well yea, obviously duke/UNC is in that rareified air, but when that rivalry dissipated, i was blown away. never thought in a million years that’d happen.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Fitting that even in mentioning shitty Big 10 programs, Minnesota is an afterthought.
They will be a top 6 team in Big 10 hockey.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
At least they are bowl eligible, unlike our DUI and coked up friends at Iowa.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA.
get the fuck out of here with college hockey, fetch.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
college hockey is a chromosome away from being a title ix sport.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
Pull Ohio St. out of the Big 10, dump them in the PAC-12 and see how people in Ohio respond.
Pac 12 titles bro.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
So you add MD and Rutgers to the Big 10 East, and put Purdue and Illnois to the West, right?
November 19th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Could we be heading to the point where super conferences have semi-final games?
November 19th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
the buckeye horde is just looking for any excuse to mobilize. say the word, bro.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
Only worry is that PSU generally owns northern VA/Maryland/NJ recruiting. Will open shit up for OSU/Michigans.
Yup. Just like those schools coming in and pulling a lot of guys out of Pittsburgh
November 19th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Yeah, they flip out about everything, moving conferences would probably result in a death or two.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
Unrelated, but great season Michigan State. Werent you ranked top 10ish at the start of the year?
November 19th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
Could we be heading to the point where super conferences have semi-final games?
It will happen when there are about three 20-24 team mega-conferences and THEN the NCAA will authorize that 14th game for football. You cant jeopardize a game of attendance/gate to do that though.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Give ‘em an extra $20m/year to play with and most people would be OK with it. Just gotta go through the phases of grief.
Denial- This’ll never happen! Too much tradition with Michigan.
Anger- Oh my god it happened! No more checks to the university, i’m gonna burn my diploma!
Bargaining- Maybe we can schedule Michigan as an OOC opponent so that tradition doesn’t go away.
Depression- Did i do enough to kep the rivalries alive? I don’t want to go to California.
Acceptance- $20 million/year? Tattoos for everyone!
November 19th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Fuck Edsall. That’s all I got
November 19th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
I think you missed that there are only 6 teams in Big 10 hockey.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Incredibly frustrating. Who woulda thunk that an OC would mena so much?
November 19th, 2012 at 12:16 PM

that’s what they get now from the Big 10. with Maryland and Rutgers the estimate is $30-35M potentially.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Who cares, fuck all three.
/sorry Cleet
Makes it all the more confusing Pitt went to the ACC. Think they’d have been a decent fit in the B1G. I’m not sure occasionally finishing 2nd in the Atlantic/Coastal whatever division the ACC is any better than finishing 4th sometimes 3rd in a B1G division. The only ACC advantage is recruiting supposedly, but the whole move pissed me off from the start.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Football wise, yes. Hockey, basketball, baseball and volleyball are not.
But football is the straw that stirs the drink.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Probably b/c Penn State turned that idea down right away.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
Those non-football schools really need to get out of the Big East ASAP. There’s no need for DePaul-Houston basketball and women’s volleyball.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
Why would the Big 10 get aTm if they’ve already got Texas? And Pennsylvania’s no Texas, cable household wise.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
No apologies necessary. I agree that Pitt was better off going to the B1G. I have no excitement over Miami repeatedly beating Pitt like the old Big East days. ACC football sucks for now, but there is still potential for some good programs to establish themselves but no one has nay patience.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
lutzzzzzzzzzzzz
November 19th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
They’re the ones that killed it. When Providence and Georgetown have the same say as Syracuse and Rutgers, despite being worth about 1/10th to TV, you’re setting your conference u for failure.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
It’s about time for the “Catholic Conference” in basketball: DePaul, SJU, Gtown, PC, Xavier, Marquette, SH, Butler, maybe St. Louis, etc. Might be able to carve out an OK basketball TV deal, given some of the markets.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
DePaul-Houston basketball
worse matchups than that will be just fine when that downtown stadium is built
November 19th, 2012 at 12:30 PM

isn’t that a religious conference? i’m no theologian but aren;t there some weird cults in there like druids and benedictines and jesuits?
November 19th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
ADd St. Joes and Villanova and you get Philly.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
I was loosely calling it a Catholic conference. Butler isn’t a Catholic school (I don’t think).
November 19th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Forgot about the Philly schools. Nova may have greater aspirations with their football program.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Get Fordham and St. John’s, and there’s the NYC Market.
/Fordham is awful at basketball
//cries
November 19th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
DePaul and Marquette should just go to the Horizon league
November 19th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Providence and Seton Hall should join the MAAC, they fit right in with the Northeast mainly Catholic schools. Of course both programs would drop out of national prominence
November 19th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
Nova and G-Town should go to A-10
November 19th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
November 19th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
St. Johns should go America East. I really don’t care about St. Johns
