Maryland and Rutgers Are Gone to the Big Ten, and Both Made the Right Move
Maryland has kissed the ACC goodbye, and will move to the Big Ten. All that glorious College Park history, gone! I’d feel a little worse if this hadn’t already happened to Nebraska, when the Cornhuskers left the Big 12 for the more more lucrative Big Ten. Or when Syracuse left the Big East for the riches of the ACC. Frankly, I’d put the Nebraska-Oklahoma rivalry and Syracuse hoops above anything Maryland has done in the ACC. Sure, I’ll miss the heated basketball rivalry with Duke, but conference realignment over the last few years has essentially made me numb to the musical chairs.
Do Maryland and Rutgers matter? On the field/court no, but the Terps play in the coveted DC market, and Rutgers is 45 minutes from NYC, and this is all about cable TV money, so the Big Ten will profit handsomely. And we all know college athletics is one big cash-grab, and money trumps tradition, obviously.
Nothing would surprise me now. Florida State to the Big 12? Let’s get it done.
We’ll leave you with the Top 5 players of the Gary Williams era at Maryland. (That football program has largely been irrelevant.) I was a bit too young to remember the Len Bias era at Maryland (plus, I was a Georgetown fan, anyway), and the Bob Wade era doesn’t exist, right? Let’s not forget Wade was responsible for recruiting (paying?) Brian Williams (later Bison Dele), Jerrod Mustaf and Walt “the Wizard” Williams. If I had to pick a favorite Terp of all-time, it would probably be Williams with Exree Hipp a close 2nd.

What, are you walking from Piscataway?
November 19th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Ralph Friedgen! EJ Henderson! Bruce Perry! Getting killed by Florida in the Orange Bowl! c’mon, man.

Speaking in Thailand Sunday, President Obama defended Israel’s counter-assault on Hamas in the Gaza Strip by saying, “There’s no country on Earth that would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders.” More from MSNBC:
“Let’s understand what the precipitating event here that’s causing the current crisis and that was an ever-escalating number of missiles that were landing not just in Israeli territory but in areas that are populated, and there’s no country on Earth that would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders,” Obama said at press conference in Thailand at the start of a three-nation tour in Asia.
“So we are fully supportive of Israel’s right to defend itself from missiles landing on people’s homes and workplaces and potentially killing civilians.”
“Israel has every right to expect that it does not have missiles fired into its territory.”
That is a very interesting thing to say at a time when the U.S. is regularly raining missiles down on Pakistan and Yemen.

That was Gary, dude. Gary getting Walk re-opened Baltimore after the city was cutoff from UMD after firing Wade.
And I said this before, but as a current student and somebody whose family has had season tickets for more than 50 years, but I’m not happy about it from a sentimental point of view. But I get it, and it’s the smart move long-term.
Oh, and fuck that cunt Debbie Yow.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
Can we get an East-West division split in the Big 10 now?
And who does the ACC go after?
November 19th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
And in basketball, Maryland is very much going to matter, starting this season.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
CNN research poll says four times as many Americans sympathize with the Israelis than the Palestinians. Depressing. Only bright spot is the number shifts heavily with younger people.
Fuck Israel.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Rutgers is 45 minutes from NYC
What, are you walking from Piscataway?
Exit 9 on the NJTPK to the Citeh, so yeah, it’s about 45 min.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Urban Meyer cannon fodder. Welcome.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
He came a long way. He was horrrrrrrrrrrendous at first, totally lost. Amazing what two All-Pro stud DTs playing directly in front of you can do.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
I still can’t believe that this move will get valued based on potential TV sets, rather than actual TV sets. Just seems kind of backwards.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
Frankly, I’d put the Nebraska-Oklahoma rivalry and Syracuse hoops above anything Maryland has done in the ACC.
I’m not sure what that means, but OU/NE weren’t even playing annually in the Big 12.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
So who’s next? Ga Tech, Clemson? Does FSU and Miami move to the SEC?
November 19th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
Also, doesn’t Maryland have the same number of championships as SU? So the difference between the programs is a few Finals Fours in the ’80s?
November 19th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
I still don’t know why or how the Big East exists anymore.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
Never forget.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
But they did lose an Orange Bowl to Sex Cannon once.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
Agreed. That game used to be one of the big rivalry games of every season, but the Big 12 not scheduling it every year basically ruined it.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
This seems right. Plus, if Boeheim is gone, is that job as good as Maryland? It full well may be, but I tend to think Maryland has the better recruiting pool than Syracuse without Boeheim.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
Perhaps some of the hard core college hoops guys could help me, but how the hell does Boheim get so many bad-ass players to Cuse, up in BFE? Is he just some sort of terminator on recruiting visits?
November 19th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
Was always a fan of Juan Dixon.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:43 PM

November 19th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
Awesome. Didn’t the million dollar man actually go broke?
November 19th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
Are Final Fours and NCAA championships the only proper measuring sticks for NCAA basketball? How do the two schools stack up in tournament wins, tournament berths, final season top 25 rankings? Twenty win seasons are now virtually meaningless. My perception is that Syracuse is quite a bit ahead of Maryland, but I guess a lot depends on your choice of relevant starting point.
The point about Boeheim leaving is a good one, I think. UConn is dealing with that now and it’s way too early to see how it’ll turn out. Hopefully they won’t get a Brandon Austin commitment tonight…
November 19th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
Program tradition. New facilities that Carmelo helped get built. School is in BFE but program has national sizzle and Carrier Dome holds over 30+ regularly.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
Goodbye to the worst fans in the ACC. Enjoy ‘em B1G 14!
Terps: you’ll always have “gone in 60 seconds” to remember your time as baby bro to Tobacco Road.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
I as a Duke fan will not miss the “rivalry” with Maryland for a simple reason: there wasn’t one. This “rivalry” you speak of existed in the minds of Duke students and players such as Shane Battier at a time when UNC was having trouble. Duke and UNC obsessed with each other in hoops? It goes without saying. Duke and MD? Please.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
his game is not played out and his gear is not weak.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Don’t know about that, but according to wikipedia, he is now an ordained minister. It must be true.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
Nah, he’s actually one of the very few former pro wrestlers that’s doing pretty well for himself.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
Money, money, money, mon-ey … money!
November 19th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
Follow the money:
Cable households (in millions)
MD – 1.56
NJ – 2.68
Only other states that are close:
VA – 1.9 (U Va)
NC – 2.1 (UNC)
GA – 2.0 (GT)
MA – 2.2 (nobody)
November 19th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Poor BC
November 19th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
You realize that Maryland is now the most recent Big Ten team to win an NCAA hoops title, right?
And Gary got Walt Williams J-Mac. Single-handedly reopened the downtown pipeline after the Wade debacle. His signing and success did more to save that program than anything. For Baltimore Sun beat reporter Paul McMillian thinks there should be a Walt Williams statue outside the Comcast Center for what he meant to that program, and I don’t disagree.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
As old school, love the Maryland team with John Lucas, Len elmore, Tom McMillian, etc… but in the day where you only got 1 berth in the NCAAs. The tourney game between NC State (David Thompson, Burleson)and Maryland was the most intensity I’ve ever seen on a basketball court during the overtime. the last inbounds pass was the most intense play ever.
I always felt sorry for Lefty, he’d sign the biggest recruit and the guy would go pro – like Moses Malone (back when nobody went pro)and maybe one of the Kings I think Albert (I think one of them went to Tennessee – Bernard with Ernie Grunfeld). They kept this move quiet, never really heard rumors of it
November 19th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
Damn, Bueller, didn’t know you went that far back. In my mind those are the ACC glory days and that game you referenced was one of the all time classics.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
it’s vexing. I was bitching about Matta recently and how Syracuse continued to pull in more 4-star guys and now a 5-star in 2014 while Ohio State has struggled a bit, despite the fact that Ohio State has been a better program since Thad Matta took over. But Hopkins is one of the best recruiters in the nation and he’s still the coach in waiting (can’t believe someone hasn’t plucked him away).
They have great facilities now b/c of Melo’s donation, but doesn’t everyone these days?
November 19th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
The NC State-Maryland triple-OT game is widely considered one of the best college basketball games in history and a major catalyst behind tourney expansion.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
Clearly it’s because of Mrs. Fine.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Yeah I’m in jpq’s age range. Back in those days, it was UNC, Maryland, NC State. Maryland was always at a disadvantage because the ACC tourney was aleways in NC (even though the crowd was split). Duke never was very good before Coach K, that I remember at least. I was always a Lefty fan
November 19th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Huh it’s almost as if one of the coaches is an all time legend and the other is Thad Matta.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Clearly it’s because of Mrs. Fine.
Damn, Bernie looks good in that picture. If I were an impressionable 27-year old kid, I’d let him molest me all day
November 19th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Shit, outside of the occasional stop in DC, the ACC tourney is almost always in NC now.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
I always hated him, for some reason, until he went to JMU. Now I look back upon him fondly.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
Also until recently, who really would pass up playing in the Big East and in the light of NYC for the tourney compared to the Big Ten? And let’s not pretend Columbus isn’t still flyover country, at least Syracuse is a few hours from legit cities.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
And not even good NC, but Greensboro.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
Clearly it’s because of Mrs. Fine.
I was wondering where Andrew Bynum got the inspiration for his new hairstyle
November 19th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
The tourney is so different now. Now it’s almost strategic to lose before the final rather than kill yourself before the NCAAs. It was so different back then
November 19th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Let’s not forget the Atlanta ACC tourneys.
And the one year Tampa hosted it. WHY THE FUCK IS TAMPA HOSTING THE ACC TOURNEY
November 19th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Also until recently, who really would pass up playing in the Big East and in the light of NYC for the tourney compared to the Big Ten? And let’s not pretend Columbus isn’t still flyover country, at least Syracuse is a few hours from legit cities.
flyover state on flyover state crime
November 19th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Didn’t bother Duke in 2010. It’s almost like that ‘better off losing’ thing is a narrative built up to excuse Roy Boy’s god awful game management abilities.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
Pretty much always been that way. ACC begins and ends on Tobacco Road. Only been in the DC area twice in the last 25 years (1987, 2005).
November 19th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
Went to HS with Dixon. Baller.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
The first 22 ACC tournaments were all held in North Carolina (1954-1975).
November 19th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
I actually prefer it being in Greensboro to Charlotte. But on the bright side at least that brought a crowd of more than four thousand people to a basketball game in Charlotte.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Even the ACC Championship Game was moved to Charlotte after being in Tampa and Jacksonville.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Walt Williams isn’t from Baltimore, he’s from PG County. I thought Williams was recruited by Wade, but I could be wrong. G. Williams finally had the door reopened for him in B’More after the Wade fiasco with Keith Booth.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
It makes me laugh, Penn State and B1G games will be on ABC in Boston and BC wont even be on TV.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
Makes sense for Maryland. The ACC as it was in the Gary Williams era is dead. 15 teams, they would be playing Duke/UNC just once a year in hoops anyways.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
Rutgers is 45 minutes from NYC
What, are you walking from Piscataway?
You can catch the express train from New Brunswick to Penn Station and be there in 30 minutes. Google says walking to MSG from the train station is 10 hours and 46 minutes. Driving is 45-50 depending on traffic.
Does the BIG 10 care that New Jersey is going to allow sports betting?
November 19th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
No. Virginia Tech & NC State maybe. But the Florida schools…no.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
I always thought Clemson to the SEC is the no brainest of no brainers.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
Just grab Duke, UNC, GA Tech, Baylor, Wake Forest and maybe shoot for a Texas or another East Coast school, go to 20 teams, 2 10-team divisions.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
The entire amateur athlete thing is BS. This is all about money. Not about rivalries. Not about what’s best for fans. Not about what’s best for student-athletes. It’s all about $$ so fuck them all.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:37 PM
If Florida blocked Miami and FSU to the SEC wouldn’t Georgia and South Carolina block Clemson?
November 19th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Probably. And now that I think about it, Clemson doesn’t really bring the SEC anything that it doesn’t already have.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:10 PM
Should the Big 10 go to 20, I’d expect Uva, UNC and GT added (that’s 17), then go after Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.
East pod (old ACC – Md., Uva, UNC, GT + Rutgers)
Central pod (OSU, IU, Purdue, Illinois, PSU)
North (UM, MSU, UM, UW, NW)
South – (old Big 12 UNL, OU, UT, KU + Iowa)
November 19th, 2012 at 5:13 PM
Brett Bielema is ecstatic. More shitty teams to play against and get wins from.
