Minnesota Golden Gophers Leading Receiver, A.J. Barker, Announces He Is Leaving Team In Rant Against Jerry Kill
A.J. Barker, the leading receiver for the Minnesota Golden Gophers this year, took to tumblr to announce why he is quitting the football team. This marks the second time in a few weeks that a team’s top receiver has publicly left a team over a dispute with the coaching staff (Marquess Wilson, Washington State).
Barker is a junior walk-on who had 577 yards receiving and was 3rd in the Big Ten in yards per game when he injured his ankle in a game against Purdue a few weeks ago. He has not played since.
Barker’s complaints arise out of verbal abuse and manipulation he alleges against head coach Jerry Kill, arising out of his recovery and treatment for his ankle.
Now, in honor of my family and myself I’m done with you for good. In light of that pathetic, manipulative display of rage and love you put on this past Thursday, I have come to the decision, with the guidance of my parents and my closest friends, that my time on this team has come to an end. It kills me that I have to do this before the season’s over, but this is the only way I can protect myself against the manipulation and abuse I’d have to endure from you the rest of this season.
There’s nothing special about me?
I’m a dime a dozen?
You don’t know what “fucked up things happened to me to screw me up so much as a person”?
My stock fell as a person since I got injured?
You had 5 of me at Northern Illinois?
You say I’ll never earn a scholarship under you? That I don’t deserve one?
A.J. Barker never received a scholarship from Minnesota, and thus is eligible to transfer and play anywhere next year.
Whether this is just a situation where athletes are more able and willing to go public, or whether it is a case where the “old school” mentality of head coaches clashes with current players who expect to be treated differently, situations like Barker seem to be more prevalent today.

So, an injured prima donna with one year of eligibility is going to transfer somewhere to stick it to Jerry Kill? Sure, kid, sure.

Clicked on the link. Gotta admit, the WR makes a strong case.

I forgot that the great Jerry Kill is above any and all criticism. in terms of great college coaches, that has to be one of the first names that comes to mind: Bear Bryant, Darrell Royal, Steve Spurrier, and former MAC runner-up Jerry Kill.

Errrr, a junior walk-on at Minnesota is a prima donna? Kid’s playing for love of the game at that point.

This kind of bugs me.
While I disagree with some or most of what Barker said (and he said a lot – it was 4,000-some words), and making it a public letter in the first place, the dismissal of his complaints with the “man-up”/”it’s football” attitude by people in this day and age is frustrating.
I don’t want the other extreme either, but somewhere where “You don’t know what ‘fucked up things happened to me to screw me up so much as a person’” and being called a faggot by an assistant for an opposing viewpoint isn’t necessary for some sort of motivation.

He might have a compelling case if his one source wasn’t his mommy’s friend who thinks the coach is a meanie. I promise you this, no one in that locker room is sad to see that whining little bitch leave. That reads like a note a dude would write his ex after she dumped him and he cried himself to sleep. Thank God every moron can take to the net and post a screed like that. Makes it easier to spot the entitled losers.

This kid sounds like a weak minded entitled bitch. He plays for Minnesota. Nut up and work harder.

“This kid sounds like a weak minded entitled bitch. He plays for Minnesota. Nut up and work harder.”
You forgot, “I’ll hang up and listen. Go Gophers.”

That’s the main thing that bothers me. Where can I place a bet that sometime this week he says something like, “I had no idea this would blow up to this extent.”
November 18th, 2012 at 8:25 PM
Except that my point is that he plays for a shitty team. If he can’t cut it at Minnesota he should just transfer to some shitty D2 team.

Something tells me the bass player in Faith Hill’s band calls up all his friends every single week to enthusiastically tell them he’s on TV again

He put this manifesto on the internet, of course he is a prima donna. I’m sure Ferris State would take him.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:27 PM
I doubt it. A few hours before he posted it, he tweeted “the calm before the storm”.

he’s a shit storm!

Tuned in late to the Stillers’ game. What’s the deal with Leftwich falling in the end zone? Is he broken again?

You know those teachers that would always say “there are no stupid questions”? I always thought questions were stupid until I used all means to figure it out myself. But you’re not stupid, Vez, I understand it’s easier to ask here.

Heres what happened chief. I was walking the dog following game on droid. The td run was so quick that when i saw the 42yd penalty i assumed it was on tge kickoff. Didnt know they had run a play before the run
