Derek Dooley Has Been Fired By Tennessee, Will Not Coach Against Kentucky
Jimmy Hyams is reporting that Tennessee had coach Derek Dooley has been fired, effective today. He will not coach the season’s final game against Kentucky next Saturday. Tennessee has confirmed.
“We very much appreciate the effort and energy that Derek Dooley and his staff have poured into our football program at the University of Tennessee,” said Hart. “Derek and I met early this morning, and I informed him that I believed a change in leadership, despite the positive contributions he has made to the overall health of the program, was in the best long-term interests of Tennessee football. We will immediately begin the search for the best possible candidate to assume this leadership role.”
Dooley coached the Vols to a 12-21 record against FBS opponents in three seasons, 4-19 in SEC play. They lost 41-18 to Vanderbilt yesterday.
The press conference will be held at 2pm. Let the Gruden rumors begin in earnest.

Dang, there goes my “fired in December” guess.
Still stunned UT got stomped by Vandy. The Vols have fallen further than I thought.

Bill O’Brien or Charlie Strong to Tennessee.

Yessssss. Finally. And not a moment too soon. The darkest era of UT football in my life is finally over. Later Derek. Get your ass back to the WAC.

I tend to think all the highest profile guys will wait to see if Kiffin survives at USC…

Yeah – I’d guess Petersen.
I assume McElwain’s name was thrown in there but after yesterday, maybe not.
I still think McElwain ends up in the SEC somewhere.

Doesn’t he have some special needs kid that gets special treatment in Idaho?

Fans of the real UT deserved better than this clown. Sadly, Dooley will land at some MAC or Sun Belt school.

Joker Phillips to Tennessee

Dooley pacing the sidelines of the Akron Zips, while still wearing the orange pants, would make me watch.

Vlad is spot on. His kid can’t be moved hence why he has turned down every job opening in the last few years…

As a Vandy fan, I do think UT should beat Vandy most years. Better resources, better tradition, normally better players, etc. This year was a little different. Vandy has been terrible for ever, but this club will finish with 8-wins and gave SC and Florida a lot of trouble. If Franklin stays and can keep getting top 15 classes, Vandy will be a 6-9 win team for a while. That’s not saying a lot, but for Vandy, it’s massive.

As a Memphian, who grew up watching John Ward do UT games & highlights, the expectation for generations was Vol victory over the ‘Dores. I’m glad things are changing.
Now if we could just get the Memphis Tigers in this discussion…

This year isn’t different at all, except our head coach. Vandy and Franklin are doing a very nice job, no question, but TN still has athletes all over that field that Vandy simply can’t compete with. He was just that bad of a coach. Also the team quit on him weeks ago.
