Peter King Leaving Sports Illustrated? His Contract Expires Early Next Year, and He’ll Have Plenty of Options
Peter King, the most recognizable NFL writer in the country, is seriously contemplating leaving Sports Illustrated when his contract expires shortly after the Super Bowl, sources tell me.
The buzz in NFL media circles is that King is genuinely torn between the idea of returning to SI or possibly taking Monday Morning QB over to NBC Sports. Would the lure of NBC – say, an enhanced role on Sunday Night Football? – be too much for SI to overcome? I emailed King this week and asked him about the situation. This was his response:
my deal with SI is up shortly after the Super Bowl, and I’ve been there 23 years, and I love it there, and no company has been better to an employee than SI has been to me. I am where I am today because of SI. I truly don’t know what I’m going to do. We’ll see what options I have, if any.
Besides NBC going after King, you have to wonder if the NFL Network makes a play for him. NFL.com has hired a slew of talented reporters, and could easily offer King a TV show on the NFL Network with all that air-time to fill. And what about ESPN? If ESPN went after Rick Reilly in 2007 with the primary purpose of trying for a kill shot at SI, wouldn’t they do the same by going after King?
One could argue Peter King will be the most coveted NFL free agent come February – even more than Mike Vick.
Losing King would obviously be a severe blow to SI. Is any other sports writer as synonymous with their brand as King is with SI? Maybe Bill Simmons with ESPN.

So not very coveted.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
I can’t imagine anyone at ESPN gives a shit about trying to kill SI. It’s already dead.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
RIP Killer.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
Fuck Peter King
November 16th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
He’ll end up at ESPN. It’s where every overbloated ego in sports writing goes to die. (See: Reilly).
And a TV show? He’s a TV personality now? I thought people went into sports writing cause they didn’t have the looks for TV.
/unlike Cari Champion who looks fiiiiiiiiine.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
He’d be a poor hire. On the decline. The Favre episodes he got punked.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Peter King is definitely a furry, right? Has this been discussed here? It would blow my mind to find out he doesn’t dress up like a skunk or a woodland creature when it’s time to get down.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
He’ll end up at NBC Sports.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
And yet you’ll read MMQB every week. It’s ok to admit it. The best column on the NFL bar none.

Who the hell is coveting Vick?
He’ll end up at NBC. He knows SI is in the final stages of death.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
NFL.com, for sure. I mean he’s already in their hip pocket, feeding us the company line.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
And yet you’ll read MMQB every week.
I haven’t read it in years. Except for when Magary was doing his mocking thing of it.

If occasionally reading KSK’s takedown of him counts? Other than that, no
November 16th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
KSK’s takedown of it is better.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Especially the coffee, travel, and knob slobbery parts of the NFL.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
This is what I kept wondering as I read this…does he do TV? Has he expressed an interest in it? Do I actually care?

As long as you skip large portions of it, whats left is a pretty good 2 page column.

He’ll end up at NBC.
I will put money on Vick not ending up at NBC next year

Unless no one sings him and he ends up on fear Factor
/that show is still on yes?

I’ve made that salmon recipe at least 74 times. Waiting for that second recipe is like waiting for an Arrested Development movie.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
I can see a few teams ‘coveting’ Vick in the backup role he had with Mcnabb. & Use him in the way Tebow should be used.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
He has the trust of many NFL players to represent what they say, accurately. I’ll take the editorials about his interests because he gets access that nobody outside of beat reporters get.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
which is not at all?
November 16th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
Except the Saints.

Liquor, I’m not sure if this was ever released or if I just sent it to the person handling his book deal.

Fuck off.
Use him in the way Tebow should be used.
To ruin the starting QB’s confidence and break apart the team’s moral?

What an inane ass PK is. But I’ll 3rd or 4th the KSK take-downs. That is where I get my PK.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
Well, I keep checking back in on the Olchimpics…I guess it runs every 8 years…but I’ll keep checking daily just in case.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
I could not care less what any NFL players have to say, though.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:54 PM

Vick might make a good fluffer but I’ve never heard that idea before.

I’m sure Peter King means well.
But the amount of bullshit you have to wade through to get to the useful stuff is exasperating.
November 16th, 2012 at 1:00 PM
RIP hockey
November 16th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Looking that way. I read where they are taking a 2 week break from not negotiating.
I’m personally relieved.
November 16th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Coffee nerdness is for losers. Doesn’t matter where King goes, I won’t read him. The biggest name dropper in sports journalism.
November 16th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
I was excited to follow college hockey more closely, with the Hockey East coverage on NBC Sports this year. My alma mater proceeded to start the year 1-9. Ugh.
November 16th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
Penn State is playing New Hampshire at the Wells Fargo center in January…that might be my only live hockey in the building until next year (if I renew my tickets).
November 16th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
I read a ton of NFL analysis and given the length of his MMQB, there is little that stands out. I dont give a shit about back-up QBs with good agents, I dont care about the HOF selection process. He’s reduced to reactionary pieces. The best analysts are demonstrating factors that are changing the game.

I didn’t know Dick Stockton wrote his emails
November 16th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
THE TICKETS. SHUT IT DOWN.
November 16th, 2012 at 1:10 PM
The correct way to write this post would’ve been, “Peter King emailed me the other day, and he said ‘Hey listen…’”
/how PK phrases every single anecdote on SNF

Love how pissy he got that Deadspin took him to task for his Evo Shield bullshit references
November 16th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Pretty sure the NFL Network damned near lured King away from SI a couple of years ago. If they were interested then, they will be interested now.
Remember, they need content to fill the dry months of the offseason.
Of course, NBCN is in the same boat with a greater need of content to produce now that the NHL is about to crumble.
November 16th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
It’s easy to criticize.
/Fun too!
November 16th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Peter King is the most insufferable, annoying, awful person. I would rather shove a live spider up my ass than listen to him yammer on SNF or read his stupid ass column about Starbucks and hotel fitness centers.
November 16th, 2012 at 9:43 PM
I cant stand the guy.
Like Costas, he reeks of the holier than thou persona and seems like a complete douche.
November 19th, 2012 at 12:19 AM
PK has the best editors when he is in print, and they stink when he is doing MMQB. Yes, I use to think that his Monday morning column was awesome but considering how many do it so much better now its already dated when I finally read it at lunch. I don’t care what he does, and I don’t care that he has lived in NJ, and Boston, and now Manhattan, and that his daughter plays field hockey, and his dog died, and that he gave free water to people. Yes, he has amazing access to players, and they trust him to not screw up their quotes, but honestly, his travel notes, his coffee and beer bullshit, its not old home week, give us real analysis that does not start with the Giants and end with Giants. Its a new age old man, you made your dough. I don’t have Sirious, and I won’t, and I don’t watch you on NBC. How big is your ego when your 60 year old ass running is part of a national column? I am sure you are very nice, and I would enjoy talking to you, but its enough. I am excited for a new writer for MMQB. Thanks.
