Melky Cabrera Signed a 2-Year Deal With the Toronto Blue Jays
Melky Cabrera, who was given a 50-game suspension for steroids elevated levels of testosterone last season, has signed a 2-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays according to ESPN Deportes. The deal is worth $16 million. Cabrera was the 2012 All-Star game MVP before he was popped for steroids elevated levels of testosterone. After testing positive he awesomely created a website for a fake company and product to try and avoid his suspension. He will now likely join Toronto’s new superteam to compete for 3rd place in the American League East.

Blue Jays could be playing for 2nd. Also, don’t be shocked if it’s Blue Jays Orioles 1 and 2 next season. Yankees will need to make some moves here come hot stove season.

Reward the cheat.
Lol.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
Boston columnist wrote a good article about Red Sox choosing wisely to stay out of the Reyes/Marlins deal. Although that means they are the worst team in the division now. Sigh.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Gavin, Garland, what are the steroid laws like north of the border?
November 16th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Two Canada posts in a row? Jesus.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
If the next post is about hockey then we’ll know the end is nigh.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
Blue Jays are winning the division next year. Yanks will be lucky to be 3rd or 4th.

Rivera is coming back therefore your argument is invalid.

Are we sure Ryan Braun isn’t actually Melky Cabrerra?
November 16th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
It’s just so fucking weird to read, though.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Cheater does well, gets caught, still makes $8 million a year for two years. Incentive to cheat? Sky high. Tell me again why Selig is the best commissioner?
November 16th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Canada = ratings (if you sub America for Canada).
November 16th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
If he wouldn’t have gotten caught, doesn’t he sign a 4-5 year deal at about $12-14M/year?
Seems like he was just offered a contract relative to his non-steroid stats (like when he got flipped for Jonathan Sanchez who didn’t even make it through the year).
November 16th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
I’m quite confident they’ll spend that extra 100m they have between now and March, and spend it more wisely than the Blue Jays have. I’ll wait till then to hypothesize on the projected AL East standings.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
Tigers sign Tori Hunter for 2 years. 1 through 5 should be pretty tough next year.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
Also, don’t be shocked if it’s Blue Jays Orioles 1 and 2 next season.
I’d be pretty shocked if the O’s can do next year what they did this year. I would guess they’ll be right around .500 next year and then be legitimately good in 2014. They had a lot of things break just right in 2012
November 16th, 2012 at 3:20 PM

In this set of problems it’s the part where he actually got caught.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
On who and why? Accept the rebuild, they’re going about it the right way.
Melky should fit nicely into the #2 spot ahead of Reyes and behind Bautista/Encarnacion. Only real deficient spot in the Jays lineup is wherever Lind plays now. East will be a fun race in 2013.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
What would you suggest? Lifetime ban? He got suspended, was pretty much shunned by the Giants and missed out on a WS ring.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
I have no clue. And neither do you. Yes next year will most likely be a transitional year. But we’ll see what they actually do in the next 4 months, I guess is what I”m saying.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
Because he conspired to keep any and all awards out of Orioles employees’ hands this offseason. Legend, hero, saint.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
Oh, boy. Did everybody see the front page at ESPN?
November 16th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
I’ll be happy if we get the Royals version of Melky out of this deal. Just like the trade, there’s some risk with Melky but I think it’s acceptable risk. Best part is that they made all these acquisitions without depleting the farm system. They still need another starting pitcher.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
Because he conspired to keep any and all awards out of Orioles employees’ hands this offseason.
Fuck you. You’re wrong on multiple levels. 3 Gold Gloves!
November 16th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Nate McLouth won one of those before, so obviously I was referring to awards worth a shit.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
OK, let me put a non-confrontational way (I guess?). What position on the field would you like to see the Red Sox address via free agency?
Here’s the top 50 free agents. Which ones do you see as fits for the type of rebuild Boston is going through? I thought Melky would have been a nice fit like Dierkes did. Ship has sailed obviously.
My only prediction for Boston this offseason that I’m 100% on is that they deal a catcher at some point. No idea what they’d be seeking in return outside of starting pitching.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Just because a team trades for a bunch of players from another team doesn’t make them the 1st or 2nd best team in the division. Dodgers were suppose to run away with the NL West or at the least win a wild card after their trade with the Sox but there is a reason the Sox were below .500 and a lot of it went to L.A. just like those guys couldn’t win in Miami. They are getting a guy with hamstring problems and playing him on turf, Buehrle hasn’t been great vs. the A.L. east and Josh Johnson is still losing velocity.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Fenway Sports Group are one of the worst ownership concerns in sports. Good luck with the rebuild, fucknuts.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
And there’s the lawsuit/sport finished.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Anibal Sanchez would be a great add for Toronto IMO.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Nate McLouth won one of those before, so obviously I was referring to awards worth a shit.
There’s only 3 of those and, as has been repeated ad nauseum by fans and perceptive observers the nation over, Manny Machado was robbed of an obvious MVP after (according to my sources) telling the BBWAA that he would not accept the ROY this year.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
Listen I’m just making fun of Queefer throwing a tantrum over the Manager of the Year award.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
There was a report a few days back on SI.com that Bobby Cox was thinking about taking the Blue Jays job. After his experience with Melky in 2010 when the Melkman laid a big turd with the Braves, I think this signing puts the kibosh on #6′s return to Skydome.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
Dodgers were suppose to run away with the NL West or at the least win a wild card after their trade with the Sox
They were? Who said that?
November 16th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
Just moving there to prolong his life expectancy.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
Oh, boy. Did everybody see the front page at ESPN?
Oh, my.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Listen I’m just making fun of Queefer throwing a tantrum over the Manager of the Year award.
That’s fine. I’ve never seen an award yet that an Oriole didn’t deserve. Although, I really didn’t have a problem with the MOY. I don’t know why anyone would be up in arms about it, the A’s were just about as big of a surprise as the Orioles
November 16th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
I don’t think they’re going to have that kind of money left over but who knows at this point? Anthopolous seems to be working in stealth mode as these deals are coming out of nowhere. I guess that’s what happens when you don’t CC the media on every internal discusion (see: Red Sox, Boston).
November 16th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
Oh, boy. Did everybody see the front page at ESPN?
Oh, my.
I wonder if Tagliabu forgot to mention that to Roger as he was headed out of the office and into retirement.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
SC, free agency might not even be half of what they do. I’m sure they’ll make a couple, or several trades. Of course they are trading Salty, they’ve made that much known. What areas would I like them to address? Starting pitching, bullpen, 1st base, shortstop, 2 outfielders. They have a shitload of work to do.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
white Mike Vick making a glorious comeback?
November 16th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Agreed.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
I’ll wait till then to hypothesize on the projected AL East standings.
More talking at this point. But they are sort of rebuilding, although that would never be admitted. Still confident they will compete. Can’t be much worse than this past year.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Didn’t Rafael Palmeiro win a GG with like 28 starts at 1B?
(Or were you just talking about this year?)
November 16th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Can that shortstop the Red Sox had playing late in the year hit at the major league level? He’s pretty good in the field.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
Jays lineup: Reyes/Melky/Bautista/E5/Lawrie/Rasmus/Lind/Izturis/Buck
I’m making the assumption that this will change halfway through the season when D’Arnaud comes up and pulls a Khal Drogo on the AL.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
Mole…goddammit.
/clears history
November 16th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
2 outfielders
/pours one out for Reddick and his glorious hair
November 16th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
That’s just not fair, Mole. Cal Ripken is not gay! He’s a happily married man. Being a pedophile doesn’t make you gay
November 16th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
Their biggest need is to get rid of the terrible manager they just hired. I think they’ll end up putting together a solid roster but Farrell is not good at his job.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
If they stick with Iglesias at short and Ciriaco at third they are going to be a contact/steal bases kind of team and I kind of like it. Pending Iglesias can hit enough to stay up. I should probably read more before commenting
November 16th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
The O’s won 3 Gold Gloves this year, King of the Elephants.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Ciriaco is a nice bench guy, nothing more.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Can that shortstop the Red Sox had playing late in the year hit at the major league level?
I think he will be the starter till about June and then we may get a glimpse of the next great young star in Xander Bogaerts.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Iglesias, that’s the guy. Can he hit?
November 16th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
I don’t think he’s going to get what he’s asking for. If he does, he’ll have to hold out until close to February when there’s someone desperate that missed on their first options.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Buck will be the back-up to Arencibia until Khal D’Arnaud arrives.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
He’s really not there yet. But yes, a fantastic fielder. They’ll need to bring someone else in to at the very least platoon.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Always hover over the link first.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Can he hit?
No.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
He’s not coming up until 2014. Book it. He’s also more than likely going to have to move to LF or 1B.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
I can’t imagine Bogaerts making the jump then again starting last year I didnt think we’d see Middlebrooks. But didnt the kid JUST get promoted to AA at the end of last year?
November 16th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
Ciriaco is a nice bench guy
Middlebrooks is the guy for sure, but Ciriaco proved himself.
Can he hit?
Uhh not really.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
Always hover over the link first.
With Rusty gone I’ve gotten out of the practice of doing so.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
He’s really not there yet
I feel like he’s 28 he’s been around so long. Will he ever?
November 16th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Had the same thought. And if the baseball gods hate Bud, imagine the AL playoffs with Jays, O’s, Rays, A’s, Tigers.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Yeah, 93 PA’s at AA. I think he’s in AA most of the year and maybe gets a cup of coffee at the end of the season.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
The Indians will take all the Red Sox prospects and that idiot Bucholz for Choo and Droobs.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
I noticed his absence lately, ban hammered I take it?
November 16th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Got it.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
But didnt the kid JUST get promoted to AA at the end of last year?
That kind of timing worked out OK for the big prospects last year.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Ellsbury is only arb. eligible for the 3rd time this year and I can’t see them parting with him until they pay his 4th round next year. I would think the Sox only need one long-term answer in the OF because Bradley Jr. should be an everyday player in the show.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Agreed. I think they should try to trade for someone like Willingham if the Twins finally decide to rebuild.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
This surprising afternoon baseball talk has made today better
November 16th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
He’s not coming up until 2014. Book it. He’s also more than likely going to have to move to LF or 1B.
They already said they are not moving him off SS because he moves well there. He may actually start off in AA and quickly move up to AAA. His power is off the charts and I highly doubt they are waiting till ’14 to bring him up. We will know for sure this off season if they bring a SS to platoon but I think they go with Iglesias for a short period and around June, the kid comes up.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
Smart move by the Jays. Tiger Woods HGH doctor probably still has some peers lurking in Toronto. Cabrera will be doping in no time.
November 16th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
I don’t think Bradley will be as good as advertised. His speed is ideal but gets a great jump on balls and on the bases. He is more of a singles hitter, little gap power but won’t have the power that Elsbury has displayed. They are high on him and he should be up quickly as well but I am not as enthralled with him as others.
November 16th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
No doubt. The Jays obviously know how to beat the testing since Bautista never gets caught.
Sincerely,
J-Mac
November 16th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Prospectus, BA and MLBTR have been putting out some great stuff for about two weeks now. AFL reports, arbitration calendars, off-season outlook series at MLBTR, the top 10 prospect series at BP and Badler’s stuff at BA have all been good offseason filler. The read on the Indians horrendous drafts this morning was quite good.
Only two weeks until the Winter Meetings in Nashville. It’s bargain shopping time right now, which, as a Cubs fan has me interested in who else they can find in those Wal-Mart clearance bins.
November 16th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
No doubt. The Jays obviously know how to beat the testing since Bautista never gets caught.
Sincerely,
J-Mac
I laughed
November 16th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
I don’t doubt that he starts in AA to start. However Boston historically outside of Middlebrooks hasn’t rushed their prospects.
November 16th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
Not sure Ellsbury has that power, actually. Having two OFs that can cover some serious ground in Fenway is a major plus. Plus, they can both go the other way and get their doubles off the Monster. It leaves LF wide open for a defensively challenged slugger to park himself.
November 16th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
In a transition year where the team is unlikely to compete it makes little sense to start a player’s arbitration clock.
November 16th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Oh, boy, SC. Jeremy Sowers is one of the Indians better picks listed in that article. That’s not good
November 16th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
I don’t doubt that he starts in AA to start
Historically they haven’t rushed their players but they are seeing signs of a kid who is ready. I have read that some in the organization want him to begin in AAA and be ready to be called up early while some say AA for a month then let him go to AAA where he should be ready by late June.
November 16th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
If I were the GM of the Red Sox, I would be making a call to the Marlins about LoMo. Park him at 1B and get him on a better conditioning program (Klaw believes he needs better leg & core conditioning programs). He would be really good at Fenway.
As SC said, rushing Boegarts to start his arbitration clock isn’t the wisest move. Red Sox need to play out this year, see what they have, and then start promoting prospects in August/September.
November 16th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
In a transition year where the team is unlikely to compete it makes little sense to start a player’s arbitration clock.
Sox never use the word transition or better yet, “bridge.” They don’t care about arbitration clocks if a guy is ready and baseball philosophy seems to be changing and that teams want to take advantage of players in their youth while they can. It is a different ball game right now and the Sox would be going with the new philosophy of speed if both Bradley and Elsbury are in the OF together which I hope to see.
November 16th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
Based on the trade last August I think Cherington is smart with money and will be more frugal with arbitration. Just because you have money, doesn’t mean you should spend it frivolously. The Red Sox aren’t in as deep of a hole as the Cubs were to start 2012, but I think their rebuilding plans will be similar in nature. Grow within, FA activity in the interim will be guys they can flip or rehab projects. Spend in FA when you’ve got your core in place and just a few holes to fill. Sox fan base may be impatient, but they can afford to wait. Fenway isn’t going to have empty seats in the near future.
Giving in to the fans rarely, if ever, works in the favor of a pro sports front office. Putting a band-aid on a gun shot wound.
