Yep. I hope he gets another shot. Cool article. He didn’t seem bitter or angry at his fate. Just a guy trying to keep his dream alive.

Woo hoo! Funny that my best friend is a teacher. I always joke with her that I will see her name on the news.
No.

Seriously. Vomit.

Guy Fieri was just on Today…he said the restaurant isn’t at it’s best because it has only been open for two months and it will get better…In my experience, restaurant are usually at it’s best the first six months it opens and then they just go downhill from there…I only eat at buffets though, so what do I know?
November 15th, 2012 at 8:47 AM
Virginia Beach mayor confirms he met with an NBA team.
This city has been clamoring for an NBA team since like 2001. They didn’t get the Grizz (I think it was them), got passed over for expansion team, and generally didn’t get a favorable prognosis when the NBA looked at them last time.

Move the hornets there(change the damn name), and the Kings to Seattle…rename them the Sonics
November 15th, 2012 at 8:49 AM
Nah, Ive seen the opposite. They get the kinks worked out, the employees improve or get fired. Usually takes a few months to tell what a restaurant will really be like.
November 15th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
I have too, but usually they open with the A-Team training and doing the work for the B-team and then when the B-team takes over the quality kinda goes down
November 15th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
Yep and if they don’t get the kinks worked out they are usually closed by 9 months.
November 15th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
Not that attractive. Not shocking

Nah, Ive seen the opposite. They get the kinks worked out, the employees improve or get fired. Usually takes a few months to tell what a restaurant will really be like.
2 months is plenty of time, especially for an experienced operator. his place is just shitty, apparently.

November 15th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
It can go either way…some restaurants get better as time goes on, and others get worse.

Do we still complain about links being several days old, or have we given up on that? Because Gustavo Almodovar passed through my life Monday.
November 15th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
i heard some of the spin he put on it. i almost want to go there now just so i can witness the dumpster fire of a restaurant.
but if i want good food in NYC i’ll just go to Olive Garden.
November 15th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
So, basically, places like Guy Fieri’s American Kitchen and Grill?
November 15th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
Yep. I hope he gets another shot. Cool article. He didn’t seem bitter or angry at his fate. Just a guy trying to keep his dream alive.
I skimmed the article only, but I think he has a colostomy bag now and that colitis seriously fucked him up. Also traction that he infected with something major. Cool to talk about him returning but if wanted to play pro ball he’d be playing pro ball. Gotta pass a physical first.
November 15th, 2012 at 8:57 AM
Food may not be good, but that review read as one big rip of Fieri. Wonder what the review would have been like had his name not been on the front.
November 15th, 2012 at 8:57 AM
The Wagner story went to great lengths to say Wagner is a drug dealer without saying it.
November 15th, 2012 at 8:57 AM
In my experience, restaurant are usually at it’s best the first six months it opens and then they just go downhill from there…
Said it before and I’ll say it again, if the hostess is ugly, get out while you still can.
November 15th, 2012 at 8:58 AM
You’re correct. The restaurant is everything he and the backers wanted it to be, with the only hiccups they encountered are that Fieri is polarizing, ripe for a takedown, and writers have taken the opportunity to do so. But really, $6.50 for a Miller YeeHigh HawLife should send anyone over the edge.

Let’s also point out, that if you’re going out to dinner in Times Square, you shouldn’t be expecting Per Se or any of the best restaurants in New York City.
There’s lots of good restaurants a few blocks away. Or take a cab.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
The Wagner story went to great lengths to say Wagner is a drug dealer without saying it.
This.
After referencing a stepfather, cousin and friend all arrested for drug related crime, it seemed pretty clear what he was trying to convey.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:02 AM
we can all blame the food network for setting back restaurants at least a decade with their celebrity chef BS
November 15th, 2012 at 9:02 AM

don’t ruin dining in NYC for the rest of us, let the people who gravitate towards a guy fieri type restaurant stay in times square for food and drink. I’ll take less obnoxious crowds at my favorite places in soho
November 15th, 2012 at 9:05 AM
YYSA, to clarify, if the hostess is ugly the food is assuredly bad. If the hostess is hot, it is still undetermined.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:06 AM
Let’s also point out, that if you’re going out to dinner in Times Square, you shouldn’t be expecting Per Se or any of the best restaurants in New York City.
the reviewer definitely wasn’t expecting fine dining. he was expecting food to be made well. if you build a career on how much you love diner food, you deserve to get blasted when your (what sounds like) high end diner food restaurant sucks.
it isn’t like this was one bad night. he probably ate there a half dozen times over the course of a few weeks and had most if not all of the menu.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:08 AM
the roundup pic makes my pants very, very loose.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
This. This. This. A restaurant reviewer usually goes to a restaurant 5 different times before writing the review. This is more than likely consistent shit.
All of the places I went to when I was in school or going up to see my ex at NYU are probably closed at this point.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
He and the medical worker exactly nailed my world. I show her a Photoshop I grinded on for 8 minutes because, you know, the world needs to see Spencer as Cousin Yuri, right? And she simply responds that she took the heart out of a dead gangbanger and put it in some Grandma’s chest. I’ll never win.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
not to mention that that is at Ford Field, so it couldn’t have been last week’s game.

November 15th, 2012 at 9:15 AM
Cant fault the reviewer. The sign in the restaurant clearly declared “WELCOME TO FLAVOR TOWN”. When the Flavortown chamber of commerce rolls out the red carpet like that and then the food disappoints, what else is a reviewer to do? Hell hath no fury like a food reviewer scorned.

I know there was a post about it yesterday, but hopefully those of you who haven’t seen it can get a look. Zlatan is one of very few footballer who would even try something like this. The potential to totally embarrass yourself and forever live in youtube infamy is way too high if you try and fail at what he did.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:16 AM
that’s his problem right there, most people who go to a guy fieri restaurant would eat most of the menu in one trip, not stretching it out over a few weeks. totally different experience with the food if it’s done in a gluttonous way.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:16 AM

Is this even a debate?
If you attend a NBA practice, you’ll see players put on a 3 point contest from mid court at almost every game. Yet, they don’t dare try to do that during a game, unless it’s a desperation 3 at end of quarter or half. I’ve tried bicycle kicks too, yet I was too chicken to try it during a game in fear of embarrassing myself. I’d like to attend some of these “higher level” games where bicycle kicks are so common. I mean, I watch EPL, La Liga, and Bundesliga every weekend. And I’ll probably see maybe 1 or 2 per month. And most are from close range.

Guy Fieri went here Blue Ash Chili. $1.50 beers all the time and huge sammiches. Just have to like Cincinnati-style chili.
I played the Blue Ash golf course. Each morning they range find the distances from all the tees and update on a magnetic teebox sign. Much appreciated.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
Though on the whole, absolutely. All the chains I’ve worked in had really strict corporate policies about health inspections relating to the GM’s continued employment. The Ruth’s Chris I worked at was immaculate. Also full of dipshits overpaying for food.

I went to a ward meeting last night
How is Burt? Mole
I know a Burl. He is 90 something.

Drink here before the Lions game. Make sure you ride their bus to Ford Field (only a couple blocks away)
November 15th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
its just Henry Fords dream kitchen. My brother-in-law is a kitchen manager for Cheesecake and he says there are young 20 year olds coming in all excited to be a chef! and then they make the same salad for 10 hours straight.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
By “higher level” I mean not kids in rec or developmental levels, referring more to u15 and above, high school, pickup, etc….go to any park on Sunday where non-whites play….my best former players that are in college or beyond right now were all doing bikes at 12….
I would be more embarrassed by a shot that goes 30 yards above a goal or a shot that goes for a throw-in rather than a missed bike attempt….
November 15th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
chain restuarants have an established institutionalized process for their management that’s usually very similar from store to store…mom and pops restaurants, of which many are very clean, have to figure out their own way via experience. there’s the difference.
/common sense’d
November 15th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Their food isn’t bad; I can just think of several non-chain places off of the top of my head where I’d rather enjoy a meal. It’s one of the nice things about living near a large city.
The only time I end up at a place like Cheesecake factory is when I have dinner with an older relative who just doesn’t care where they eat.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:50 AM
I’ve heard the old piss in the pickle bucket story before as well.

Yeah I mean I’m not saying it isn’t an incredible piece of skill.
All I’m saying is I’ll still take Zidane’s CL final volley over it all day erry day.

Could also check out the Eastern Market tailgate.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
yeah, no. Attempting one in front of 55 people is not the same attempting it during a professional match. Like I said, there’s a reason why athletes try all sorts of cool trick shots and throws during a practice that they wouldn’t dare do in front of thousands of people in stadium and millions watching at home. This guy did. He deserves respect for that.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
I’ve heard so many incarnations of that story (grew up around the bar/restaurant business), I’ve lost count.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
Mixture in the Yelp reviews of “had the best time” and “Worst.Bar.Ever” which indicates to me that this place will be terrific. Thanks.

Very true. Our kitchen was swimming with Xanax, Loritab, Methadone, and every tradtional narcotic around. Had to go home early one time because I dozed off cleaning the fryer. Goddamn bars.

As long as you’re not expecting a 4* place, don’t mind receiving your beer in a plastic cup, and will inevitable be wearing some of the beer as others bump into you on accident, you’ll enjoy it.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
I’ve heard the old piss in the pickle bucket story before as well
Moral of the story, cook at home. Only go out for drinks.

depends on what you get. I’ve found some whisky that i’ve never had before, buy a bottle, and hate it.
Typically i like to go out and try something for 1/4 or 1/8 the cost of the bottle before dropping a lot. mostly to keep the wife happy that i’m not dropping too much on booze i’ve never had before.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
truth. stick to it for a good year and you might graduate to making pizzas.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
Most incidents I witnessed of….”food alterations”…came about because of a customer acted like a dick.
So, I would amend the lesson to “be careful about pissing off people in the food service industry if you like to go out to eat”.
November 15th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
Restaurant Impossible is a horrifying show to see how disgusting small restaurants kitchens are.

c) how the fuck can you trust a guy that looks like this?

That shit is real. You don’t fake that many years of caked on grease.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Any of you ever been out with that one friend who starts getting belligerent with the wait staff as soon as he walks into the restaurant? We started to not order anything when we went to any restaurant with him at one point. Just for the fear of someone spitting in my food. Finally we just stopped inviting him whenever we went to a restaurant.

November 15th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
It has to be some of these cities are shitty about enforcing health codes. I worked at a Pizza Hut in high school and a mom and pop place. We had to have that place sparkling just to squeak by the inspections. Cleaning the walk-in? Brutal assignment.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
oh, i know that…just saying they pick the worst of the worst because nobody wants to a roided up bear yelling at a guy for not mopping in three days.
in any event, we survived the plague, we’ll be fine.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
I haven’t seen much of anything publicized about this show, but my Uncle is the executive producer, so I will publicize it! Should be a pretty interesting watch, a poor man’s “Hard Knocks” perhaps?

Yep. We just did some work ona remodel for a Hooters that was taking over what was an old ‘Chinese Super Buffet’ type place. You haven’t lived until you try to remove a ceiling tile in a kitchen and it folds like soggy bread.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Most horrifying show is Bar Rescue, where they take a perfect dive with free pours, degenerates and drunken owners and turn into some souless nightclub hole for rich college kids to spend $7 a mixed shot. Like watching priceless art defaced into glib advertisements aimed at morons.

For some college and minor league ahockey we did small shit like keeping the sticks in the airplane storage reas with heat so the sticks wouldnt get f–cked up from brutal low temps in the winter. Tons of mindless arguing each trip that nobody gives a shit about.

Didn’t realize it had to be tried in a professional match from your initial comment to qualify as relevant to the conversation. My bad.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
Yeah, I don’t know if that part of the show will be as entertaining as watching the team game-plan for their opponent that week. Uncle seems very excited about it. I’m glad NFL Films is involved.

Always heard great things about that place when I lived in CHA and never went. I hated going anywhere on Independence because of the damned traffic.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Hey Joe, where you goin’ with that pie in your hand?
Assuming your buddy Marty isn’t one of those Cusacks.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Not really your point, but the last line of that article:
The over/under of price increase has got to be at least $1, right? No way a pizza goes from $9.99 to $10.13.
So people get their insurance, businesses are more profitable, and consumer pays for everything. Sounds about right.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Just wait till people start getting dropped from their companies health coverage or out right fired. If this is gonna be the law of the land may as well revoke all the fucking waivers that were handed out to the chosen groups.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
No.
So most workers’ hours are cut, they still don’t get health insurance because they won’t meet the threshold, and prices go up.
The ObamaEconomy strikes again.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Isn’t on Independence, was between Pecan and 3rd more or less, though parking was a fucking nightmare there. Had outstanding burgers and hotdogs and great fried pickles. It still exists but I believe the menu and equipment was taken by the people who worked there to a new place (I think called The Diamond) and now The Penguin is something else, the people who owened the property were the dicks in the situation.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
There was a pretty impressive takedown of Papa John out there. They calculated the cost given the information on his actual employees, pizzas sold and the cost per pizza is closer to 4 cents. Big fucking deal.
Plus, he’s giving away like 2 million pizzas in that one promotion. I realize that’s a marketing cost but its still a cost. Maybe just dont give out so many free pizzas dumb shit.
Papa is being really butthurt.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Yeah, the world pizza market is going to be fucking decimated by the Obama election. All the pizza joints will fucking shutter themselves.
Get out of here with that nonsense.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
I wonder if this will cost Papa John’s 14 cents per pizza?
November 15th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Plus, he’s giving away like 2 million pizzas in that one promotion.
Love this. When Titans win, its half off here. Got 2 large and breadsticks for like $14 Monday. Stealing. And yes, I enjoyed it, because I enjoy Papa Johns pizza.
/high-fives Peyton Manning
November 15th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
The “pizza joints” will be just fine … by cutting hours and laying off employees. Oh, and jacking up prices.
Meanwhile, the fast food worker’s life just got even more miserable because instead of working 35 hours a week — if he’s lucky to be employed in this economy in the first place — he’s now working 20, and will likely have to find a second job, which if he’s lucky to have two, still neither will provide him with insurance.
See, it’s funny what happens when you wade past the Hopenchange and look at the details.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Maybe just dont give out so many free pizzas dumb shit.
peyton made him, remember?
November 15th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
At the last company I worked at (very large, fortune 500 company), they started cutting all part time employees to under 25 hours weekly a few months ago. They gave us the option to move some long term part timers to full time, but the cost of their benefits along with their additional income came out of your branch’s bottom line, which the managers were paid a commission from. I was lucky that only 1 of my part timers was in it for the income (all of my part timers were retirees looking to keep themselves busy), so I moved her to full time and the others were cool with it. Unfortunately, after I left, the new manager decided to put her back to part time. Just a shitty situation all around.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:45 AM

this is rich coming from a republican. all of a sudden you care about the downtrodden. i’m liberal and i say ‘hey, go get some training for a job/career that doesn;t expose you to the whims of a government.’ yes, that’s right, handle your business better and don’t blame others for your plight
November 15th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
gonna be another good 4 years for Republicans.
Dem in the white house, so 4 years of bitching. Fox News ratings will be up, that’s for sure.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
It’s funny seeing corporate America which is sitting on $3 trillion of cash bitching about the costs of health care. Maybe instead of sitting on that cash earning 0.25 they can help their employees which in turn would help increase demand, allowing for revenues to grow.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
i don’t get it. right or left, no politician or system of government can ever please everyone. if some policies are so clearly wrong but remains in place, then the system is broken. waiting for politicians to sacrifice career for the public well being is a fool’s game
November 15th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Dem in the white house, so 4 years of bitching. Fox News ratings will be up, that’s for sure. McIntyre
I saw someone on here after the election saying that there needed to be a Rush Limbaugh suicide watch. Bullshit. He loves Democrats being in power.

Meanwhile, the fast food worker’s life just got even more miserable
Fast food workers life is already miserable – BECAUSE HE’S WORKING AT A FAST FOOD JOB. If the health care reform radically alters our fast food industry, whatever. That’s the cost. Well, I guess I’ll live with it.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:50 AM

November 15th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Is there this massive group of adults that are sustaining themselves solely on their 30 hour work weeks at McDonalds and Arby’s? Am I missing something? This is going to decimate the American economy?
November 15th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Kind of simplistic. The companies with the boatloads of cash aren’t the ones who will be the greatest affected. I don’t think Apple with $176 billion will be looking to reduce their part-time hours.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Liberal economics never have — and never will — work.
The only question I have is, after what will be eight years of this misery, will The One finally own up to his failures and stop blaming Bush?
November 15th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
It’s called a credit crunch combined with falling home prices which has lead consumers to retract their spending. Once consumers have their balance sheets cleaned up (and have the past 4 years), they’re willing to spend more, creating demand. Your bubble conservative point of view thinking that “job creators” create this tremendous wealth effect has proven to be factually and theoretically wrong all through economic history.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
Once people realize Rush, Fox News, MSNBC is all a sick form of entertainment, it all makes sense. Rush made his name during Clinton, was forgotten about during Bush II, and suddenly is back again with a dem in the White House. Fox News was in cheerleading mode during BUsh II – which isn’t good for ratings – then starts raging against the machine when a Dems in office. MSNBC is still the junior varsity though(except in reverse).
/Done with entertainment masked a politics for the day
November 15th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Yes, there is.
It’s rare that I find myself aligned with Mike NYC, but in this case, I am. Obamacare is a monstrosity, and people are going to find out very soon what the true cost is.
It’s also the main reason I switched from supporting Obama in ’08 to not supporting Obama in ’12.
November 15th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
What I learned – economics don’t work.
November 15th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
There is no trickle down effect and not even Romney would support austerity. Fucking Reagan’s (glad he’s dead) recovery was Keynesian, what in the hell are you talking about?
November 15th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Work 17.5 hours at Arby’s, go work 17.5 hours at McDonalds. Solved.
November 15th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Im sorry but if you are working 35 hours a week at a fast food place on the csah register, your concern is greater than our modern healthcare system. I realize there is a tiny subset of people who have a disability or something and will be impacted. The vast sum of people doing 35 hours at WacArnolds lack legitimite trade skills.
November 15th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Well, if restaurants need to get people below 30 hours, then they’ll need to hire more people to make up the difference.
Jobs created.
Problem solved.

bad taxidermy
The guy who founded auto-trader lives out near Lake Oconee in an extremely nice house. The huge basement is filled with all kinds of taxidermied (word?) animals that he’s hunted. And they’re displayed in their “natural habitat” in many spots – like little caverns built into the wall with a bobcat sitting on a tree branch looking down at a beaver (pun?). For real.
He even has a sink – the base of which is a monkey with its arms extended up, holding the bowl of the sink.

November 15th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
I have quite a few friends in the restaurant biz, mostly chefs. Guys with kids and shit, no insurance.
They end up just paying huge lump sums every so often for various forms of health care. This “monstrosity” simply pushes their cheap ass employers to provide some level of assistance, and yes, costs the employee a little up front to save on the back end.
Ultimately the goal is to get people access to “free” preventative care before you need really expensive care (and bankruptcy). The payout per person cost stays about the same, but just happens at different points in the chain.

November 15th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Liquor, are you talking about Obamacare? Because that is not the way it works, from how I understand it.
THe law will require you to buy insurance, whether you can afford it or not. If you don’t buy it bevause you can’t afford it, you are penalized up to 10 percent of your income, leaving you still without coverage.
Insurers are required to take all comers, but there is no mechanism in the law to limit what they can charge in premiums, other than some vague promise that the “market” will cap costs.
Small companies will drop their insurance programs for employees because it will be cheaper to simply pay the fine for not providing.
Larger companies already are in the process of shifting most or all costs for insurance to their employees. This is happening right now where I work.
And even if you have coverage, you will pay a tax on the worth of that coverage.
If I’m wrong in any of this, someone correct me.
November 15th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
One would think this would result in an extreme amount of dissatisfaction.
