USMNT Drew 2-2 Away With Russia, On Goals from Bradley and Diskerud
International friendlies mean little. Those occurring mid-season mean even less. Away wins over Italy and Mexico did not portend success for the U.S. during a nervy round of qualifying. It is important not to get too jazzed up with a 2-2 away draw against Russia. The U.S. entered the match with questions and leaves…with the same questions.
Klinsmann treated this as a friendly, using the trip to work in some young players. Klinsmann brought back Jozy Altidore, Juan Agudeo and Timmy Chandler. He also called up Norwegian-based youngsters Joshua Gatt and Mikkel Diskerud. The late Diskerud goal saved result, but it was a rather dismal performance.
Russia dominated, forcing Tim Howard to make multiple saves on shots from inside the penalty area. The U.S. created four chances – none were that great – but managed to score two of them. American back four defending was sloppy. The U.S. also struggled advancing the ball against pressure, resulting in needless giveaways. The most notable example was Danny Williams’ quick free kick that set up Russia’s first goal.
Crucial for Klinsmann will be addressing the midfield situation. Bereft up front and at the back, the U.S. needs that midfield to cover the back four and build play forward. The unit starting today was full strength and failed at both tasks.
Both goals came from U.S. strikers working hard to knock down long balls for the scorer to run on to. Neither involved Jozy Altidore.

FAMOUS DRAWS FOR EVERYONE OOSAH OOSAH OOSAH
November 14th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
Even though they didn’t play well, the goals they gave up could have been prevented. Still a good tie against a very good Russian team without Landon, Clint, Cherundolo playing. Still think this team should be playing a 4-4-2 or something similar going forward.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
I will be happy if Goodson never plays for the USMNT ever again
November 14th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
Our formation seems to encourage the ball to stay on the ground yet we scored both goals off of long ball flick-ons. Okay then.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
I wonder how much longer the USA’s defense can amount to “the GK making a bunch of crazy saves.” do we have someone in the pipeline for when Howard retires?
November 14th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
Brad Guzan.
So …. no.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
Guzan is a capabable back up, but I don’t think he would make all of the saves that Howard does. let’s hope one or two CB’s step up in the next year like Omar, Hedges, Berry, Besler, or John as they need some new blood back there.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
More likely Bill Hamid, really, just felt like taking a shot at Guzan’s sorry ass.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Hamid needs a lot of work on when to come out and get the ball, but he is a good shot stopper. He is very young so he has a lot of time to develop. There are other Gk’s out there too who are young like Johnson, McMath, Meara.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
This was a joy to watch.

November 14th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
Guzan played something like sixteen competitive games in the four years he moved from Chivas. Such an obscenely stupid waste of development. To say he’s the American Scott Carson would be kind.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
My guess is we’ll be seeing that in Friday’s Roundup
November 14th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
even more of a possibility since deadspin already posted it.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Yeah, although it’s nice that he’s finally getting his shot at Aston Villa. Doubt they’ll stay up, though.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Possibly tomorrow roundup. I sent that to CRM a couple hours ago. We peruse reddit like everyone else.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
Ah, the Nuri Sahin career model. Crazy how many young footballers career have been ruined by agents pushing them to transfer to “big” clubs. You can literally watch them rot while they sit on the bench.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
We peruse reddit like everyone else.
this is me showing my age, but i really don’t understand how to work reddit. I don’t want to see people commenting about untoward things, I want to see untoward things.
Possibly tomorrow roundup. I sent that to CRM a couple hours ago.
the likeliest scenario is that it appears in both tomorrow’s AND friday’s roundup. Because that happens a lot.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
To be fair Sahin was hurt a bit last year and is definitely playing more now (and showing glimpses of what he can do).
But yeah Madrid are the biggest culprits with that shit.

don’t know what the roster will look like for the World Cup, but i have a strange feeling the US is going to do very well.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
The US always seems to succeed as ugly as possible. We looked terrible at times the last World Cup, but still hung when it counted.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
how many times can this happen before someone goes “wait a second, you’re full of shit”?
November 14th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
I do not have the same feeling.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:19 PM

A: define very well into quantitative terms. Out of Group? Win Group? Win an elimination game?
B: Before you do any of that, I disagree completely
November 14th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
We peruse reddit like everyone else.
I’ve been to reddit about five times ever. I wait till the good stuff filters to CRM’s Thursday round-up.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Reddit can be a pretty horrifying place.
that makes one of us.

November 14th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
Clayton –
Quarters or Semis. That is, assuming, the US reaches the World Cup.
Barring a horrendous draw, I will remain very optimistic about JK pushing the right buttons.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
The question that precedes that one “wait a second, you’re paying me HOW MUCH? holy shit!” usually keeps that one from getting asked.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
If you gave me the choice between US losing all 3 group games or winning 1 group game, I think I’d lean more toward 3 losses.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
I do not have the same feeling.
given the flummox of the roster and aging talent since the 2010 I’d say advancing from the group stage would be impressive. I’d say about 25% chance of advancing.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
When is the USMNT naming sites for the next round. I saw they posted dates…
November 14th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
Depends on the group they are drawn into. To me, very well would be making it to the quarterfinals. That back 4 is sketchy at best.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
yes, aging roster, but i like how JK SEEMS to have been pushing some good buttons with young players.
Some of the young/sorta unknown guys he has played have looked sharp. I was calling for this after the last world cup and I’m just happy to see unknown dudes get a shot.
Chandler would be a HUGE score if they can get him. From the telecast, it sounds like they’re getting him.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Great Russian video.
My favorite, among many, were the two guys that just grabbed their belongings and calmly got the fuck out.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
There any site that has odds of USA in the WC yet? That would be cool to see. Quarterfinals? That would have to be 25-1 or better payout.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
USA v. Germany friendly set for May 2013, location TBD.

November 14th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
Also, I feel like there is a fortune to be made in lug-nuts.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
I’d say there willbe about 4 groups the USA would have almost no chance of surviving and the other 4 would be a struggle.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
That’s great. If it’s anywhere on east coast, I’d definitely go.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
This is probably going to be the most loaded WC in a long long time. No bullshit autoqualifier like South Africa. The CONEMBOL sides, outside of Ecuador, are all capable of reaching the semis. I will be pants shittingly shocked if a CONCACAF team makes it out of the groups.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
(That is to say, the AQ team actually is good)
November 14th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
have you seen this takedown of them?
but yeah, there’s also r/MensRights which is pretty horrific.
oh right, and one of the most popular subreddits was called “Jailbait,” where people passed around photos of underaged girls and eventually straight-up child porn until Gawker (and then the FBI) found out about it. and then even more recently there was a subreddit called “Creepshots,” which contained photos of women that users there had taken secretly and uploaded without their consent. Fun! so yeah, I try to avoid reddit.
right now my feeling is the opposite — without a very lucky draw I don’t know if the US can reach the knockout stages
November 14th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
I feel like complaining about Guzan riding the pine made sense last year, but he’s picked up his game as a starter at Villa. Am I the only one who remembers how long it took Howard to break through, and GK’s tend to take a little longer to develop.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
How does the group drawing for the WC work? Is it similar to Champions League with the retarded balls in bowls gag?
November 14th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
I don’t understand why USA seem to always ignore the south when they are scheduling qualifiers. I know they played in Nashville a few years ago, but it seems like Northeast and West Coast has a monopoly on any meaningful USA games.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Clayton – Quarters or Semis.
that is insanely optimistic (and surprisingly civil). I’d bet 38K against either of those outcomes, however.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
I seem to recall Nashville and Tampa getting a bunch of USMNT games if not qualifiers.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
38k? What odds?
November 14th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
How does the group drawing for the WC work? Is it similar to Champions League with the retarded balls in bowls gag?
Guys from Euro nations and FIFA sit in a room,
pass bags of cash, and then laugh as they devise a way to screw the USAdetermine the groups in a fair, random manner.November 14th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
I don’t understand why USA seem to always ignore the south when they are scheduling qualifiers.
They played in Kansas City, KS.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Very complicated. I don’t understand it completely. But top 8 teams get their own groups and then they split 24 other teams into those groups. But there’s rule prohibiting too many teams from one region being put into same group and other such rules.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
How does the group drawing for the WC work? Is it similar to Champions League with the retarded balls in bowls gag?
yeah, like a total two hour thing, with 2 blind draws for groups and locations. Quite the spectacle, but easy to make fun of for soccer haters.
For the 2014 tourney, it’s all about where you get to get kidnapped for ransom.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
38k? What odds?
you lose, you give me 38K. I lose, I get banned for two weeks.
I’m not actually a wagerer.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
$38K? Such an odd number. Is that what is left on the student loan debt, Dirt?
November 14th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
I thought they were friendlies. Could be mistaken though. Atlanta hasn’t had a qualifier in a while. Would love to attend if they ever came here.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
I mean, England-Algeria-Slovenia was (on paper, at least) a pretty soft group and the USA didn’t make it into the knockout stages until literally the final minute.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Top seven teams plus the host. Brazil aren’t currently in the top ten in the FIFA rankings.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Some of it is weather, the fields wanting soccer games, and some of it is to schedule far away from the border to make foreigners less likely to come. Now that the USA gets better attendance you might see some more of that.
There was a Gold Cup came in Tampa, no?
November 14th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
What I wouldn’t give for this to happen to Sepp Blatter. Except, he’s never heard from again.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
In the past 2 years, USMNT has played home games in:
California (2)
New Jersey (2)
Tennessee
Massachusetts
Detroit
Houston
Philly
Miami
Arizona
Jacksonville
D.C. (2)
Tampa
Columbus
Kansas City
November 14th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
If I were the USSF I wouldn’t schedule home qualifiers in any city with huge latino populations what with the whole outdrawing us and the piss balloons.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Portland & Seattle deserve a home game.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
The DET game had a pretty weak feel. The pitch sucked also. I dont see them coming back. They’ll have some DC and Boston games potentially too for qualifiying.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Seattle should get one. What does the stadium in Portland hold?
And I’d expect a game in Minnesota after 2016
November 14th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
The USSF will probably only schedule 1 game at a large stadium the rest will be at Salt Lake, probably the game before the Away Mex game as both are at altitude. The Mex home game will be at either Columbus or KC. The other 2 like I said above will be big stadium (Seattle- if they figure out the field or Philly, and the other one will be in jacksonville or Nashville)
November 14th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Portland and Seattle deserve a game and I would love seeing them host some, but US Soccer probably doesnt want to hold games on turf or a newly laid grass surface. Hopefully they can figure that out as the atmospheres would be great
November 14th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
Portland holds 20.5k
November 14th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
Wiki says:
Or they could go 2 hours South of Portland to Eugene and Nike University. They can fit 54,000 in their football stadium.

They don’t play in the south because those friendlies turn into road games whenever the US plays a Central or South American team.
November 14th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
Are they smelly hippies?
November 14th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
That disallowed goal against Slovenia played a large part in that.
November 14th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
November 14th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Duffy, do you just have a template for these friendly posts? They all look identical. We get it, friendlies don’t mean anything.
November 14th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
There’s another kind?
