If he is taking a pay cut, it’ll be because he is working for another media entity. His ego won’t allow him to sign for less with ESPN. If he works for another company, at least he can spin it as “I just wanted to have the creative freedom that’s not allowed with a big company like ESPN” type bullshit.

Grantland will have one excellent piece you couldnt find anywhere else and then a ton of garbage. It’s exhausting and outside Simmons nobody is appointment reading.

And i think the Barnwell article referenced is the “Football players live longer than baseball players” one. Really bad. Perhaps “OK” was too strong to describe Barnwell, he’s a bit of a weak link (in the most popular sport).

Was a very poor study of MLB vs. NFL mortality rates. If you are going to use stats to try to make a point, but don’t understand statistics at all, you open yourself up to a lot of criticism, IMO. It’s the reason I don’t argue soccer, because I’ll sound like a fucking idiot.

Some good writers – Keri on baseball, Zach Lowe on hoops. Barnwell is OK. Jonathan Abrams has some good stuff. The pop culture stuff doesnt really appeal to me. Klostermann is hit or miss. Can’t stand Charlie Pierce.

I used to like Simmons, but have gotten away from that as he’s gotten into the habit of trying to solve the problems of the sports world and fit everything into his rules/paradigms. I don’t hate him though and still regularly listen to the BS Reports (which I enjoy far more than his columns).

I have never been able to get into Grantland. A few articles were good early on, but for the most part either the writers, or the content just doesn’t interest me. That crap I flipped out on Barnwell about (which helped inspire the Deadspin takedown of his post) was the last straw for me.

I loathe Simmons with a passion and despise how he’s somehow the voice of Boston, fuck him, but Grantland is ok, not amazing, but better than any other shit they put out on espn.com I give him no credit for 30 for 30′s success though.
