Rick Reilly: His Contract is Up in Six Months. Think ESPN Retains Him?
Rick Reilly left Sports Illustrated for “ridonkulous” ESPN money in 2007, signing a 5-year, $10 million deal. He officially arrived at ESPN in June 2008, which means he’s got six months and a couple weeks left on his contract.
ESPN all but confirmed that timeline to me this week.
The big story at the time of his hiring was the Bill Simmons vs. Rick Reilly “Top Dog” billing, given the fact that Reilly was now ESPN’s highest-paid writer, but Simmons was the website’s most valuable commodity.
Simmons has soared at ESPN in the last five years: He started Grantland, which has built an impressive staff that regularly churns out quality sports reading material, and recently, he ascended to NBA Countdown, meaning he’s on TV regularly.
What has Reilly done? Based on his performance for the first 4.5 years of his deal, do you think he’ll be back? You can tell he’s pushing hard this year (his “mention I had this first on twitter” moment during after Monday Night Football being the latest example) to prove he’s worth another big money deal. Breaking news is a great way to get “in the discussion” … but he fumbled badly when jumping into that realm during last November’s UCLA coaching search.
A guess – with a lot of time left – $500k a year for two years?

Could you please provide a link to an official release/announcement that calls the contract “ridonkulous”?

That’s actually an All Things D piece, and I trust the WSJ just a tad more on such matters than TBL or a gossip columnist for the NY Post.
November 14th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
I remember reading an article of his on the back page of SI when I was like 10 and thinking:
“If this guy can be a sportswriter, anyone can be a sportswriter.”
Seeing as how anyone can start a sports blog, I turned out to be right.

Could you provide me the link where Huffy Puffy Duffy reappeared?
November 14th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
Yes I would like to see that too please.
/Charlie Pierce is alright. Fuck the rest
November 14th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
It was an appropriate response.
November 14th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Also, 30 for 30 should be on Simmons lists of accomplishments before some of this other stuff.
November 14th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
I’ve never actually seen anything he’s written for them but Colson Whitehead is apparently on Grantland’s staff. He’s a pretty great writer.
November 14th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
ESPN employs Screamin A, Colin and Bayless. I am sure they can find a way to keep Reilly.
He’s the Ian Baker Finch of writers. He’s lost all his wits and seems to have the personal upkeep of a bum. I really think he goes away for a few years and attempts some post-personal trauma comeback.
But the shit like recycling stories and being a mess at events. It’s terrible. I cant think of a writer who regressed more. Usually age wizens the best writers. Maybe b/c he tried to always be so witty and now that he’s lost his wit he’s just a junkball pitcher with nothing left.

Girl on my facebook just bought a rabbit and refuses to allow my puppy to hunt it for a website we’d launch BunnyVsPuppy.com. Some people allergic to internet money.
November 14th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
if i were obama on may 1, 2011, id have seriously considered sending seal team 6 to get reily instead of bin laden.
November 14th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
I put the data out exposing Duffy’s idiocy in the ToP post, if anyone cares for numbers or stats.

Jason didn’t you say the guy that hired him is gone?
November 14th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Better.
November 14th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Yea but 30 for 30 is only executive produced by him, and the one where he had the most involvement, 4 days in October, is one of the 5 shittiest of the bunch.

I’m not sure you are able to draw too many conclusions from that.
November 14th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
So he’s the protagonist in a Richard Ford novel?
November 14th, 2012 at 2:55 PM

Probably would.
Dwarf rabbit, whichever learned to corner better on hardwood floors would win. Could have been the new generations Tom and Jerry.

Agree. Who was that idiot he kept talking to in the bar?? Boston Bob or something like that?? I have to go on record that Grantland is overrated.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
well, you’ll take it the wrong way so no use of me to tell you not to take it the wrong way. You come across as real snobby at times.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
wasnt even aware he was at espn.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
See, it’s all in how you sell it. It’s not a HUNT, it’s a RACE! A cute bunne/fuzzy puppy race. That’s the ticket!
/Then nature takes it’s course and the outcome is the same anyway.

You and Clay should get a room.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
Played this game a few months ago. Baby bunny vs. 65 pound boxer. It lasted 2 seconds, and the bunny ended up with its face slashed open and a .22 in its brain. I don’t think it plays as well on YouTube as you’d think.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
But Kaiser, yes, I do.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
No that was Lenny Clarke, Denis Leary’s shitty ‘comedian’ buddy who is just the fucking worst of all time.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Didn’t miss much. Just the usual puff pieces that he used to do for SI near the end.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
I don’t know. I’ve yet to meet someone admit that they read and/or like grantland. Pretty much everyone calls them overrated. Makes me think they are underrated simply because they can’t get past their hatred of simmons.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
wasnt even aware he was at espn.
he shows up at the golf majors and tries these quirky vignettes kinda like Bud Collins would do back in the day at Wimbledon. they are the absolute worst pieces done all year and if you didn’t know he was trying to be witty, you’d think they are parody pieces.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Nothing on Royce White today?
November 14th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
I loathe Simmons with a passion and despise how he’s somehow the voice of Boston, fuck him, but Grantland is ok, not amazing, but better than any other shit they put out on espn.com I give him no credit for 30 for 30′s success though.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
I used to like Simmons, but have gotten away from that as he’s gotten into the habit of trying to solve the problems of the sports world and fit everything into his rules/paradigms. I don’t hate him though and still regularly listen to the BS Reports (which I enjoy far more than his columns).
I have never been able to get into Grantland. A few articles were good early on, but for the most part either the writers, or the content just doesn’t interest me. That crap I flipped out on Barnwell about (which helped inspire the Deadspin takedown of his post) was the last straw for me.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
Also Reilly is just as much of a smug prick in person as you would think.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Which Barnwell article???
November 14th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Some good writers – Keri on baseball, Zach Lowe on hoops. Barnwell is OK. Jonathan Abrams has some good stuff. The pop culture stuff doesnt really appeal to me. Klostermann is hit or miss. Can’t stand Charlie Pierce.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
Grantland will have one excellent piece you couldnt find anywhere else and then a ton of garbage. It’s exhausting and outside Simmons nobody is appointment reading.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
Jay Caspian King, Rembert Browne, and that Amos kid are brutal IMO
November 14th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
The one where he discovered older people die sooner than younger people. Just brilliant insight by him.
Was a very poor study of MLB vs. NFL mortality rates. If you are going to use stats to try to make a point, but don’t understand statistics at all, you open yourself up to a lot of criticism, IMO. It’s the reason I don’t argue soccer, because I’ll sound like a fucking idiot.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Am I the only one that likes the podcasts? Granted I don’t listen intently (usually at work), but I think he’s a pretty good listen (acoustics aside) and a fairly competent interviewer.
November 14th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Fair.
And i think the Barnwell article referenced is the “Football players live longer than baseball players” one. Really bad. Perhaps “OK” was too strong to describe Barnwell, he’s a bit of a weak link (in the most popular sport).
The Abrams piece on Malice at the Palace was really good. But are there that many people who care about the 1980′s Rockets?
November 14th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
A guess – with a lot of time left – $500k a year for two years?
He wouldn’t work for that. If he did, it would be for a lot less output – like a column a month with no other responsibilities or something. Why work for $500K when you have that kind of cash. It’s not like he’s 25.
November 14th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
I actually liked the 1980′s Rockets piece a lot
/How the fuck is Ralph Sampson in the HOF
November 14th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
If he is taking a pay cut, it’ll be because he is working for another media entity. His ego won’t allow him to sign for less with ESPN. If he works for another company, at least he can spin it as “I just wanted to have the creative freedom that’s not allowed with a big company like ESPN” type bullshit.
November 14th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
Sampson is in the HOF because they take college accomplishments into account.
November 14th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
Riley can turn out garbage pooks that will still hit the best sellers list. He’s kind of in that Mike and Mike vein where you have no idea how they are employed but they have the #’s to get paid.
Basically outside of a Frank Deford hit piece, Reilly still will intrigue some editor somewhere. He’s just a caricature of himself at this point.
November 14th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Sampson is in the HOF because they take college accomplishments into account.
So JJ Reddick will grace those halls one day too, side by side with Adam Morrison.
November 14th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
November 14th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
They’ll be in the third level of Simmons’s pyramid
November 14th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
JJ Redick, Adam Morrison, 3-time Naismith Award winner, all the same.
