Alex Poythress Dunked Four Times Very Hard and Loudly Against Duke
Alex Poythress, one of the heralded Kentucky freshman, threw down four impressive, powerful dunks in a loss to Duke Tuesday. He finished with 20 points and eight rebounds, a much strong performance than he offered up in the season-opener against Maryland.
And now, here’s the portion of the post where I address the emails/tweets/comments I got about Duke:
It was a nice win for the Blue Devils, who looked better than I thought they would. They played extremely well when Mason Plumlee (18 points) went to the bench in the 2nd half. The seniors carried them in the first half, and they just enough from exciting freshman Rasheed Sulaimon (10 points, six rebounds, five assists, 3-for-14 shooting) and Quinn Cook (seven points) off the bench to defeat the defending champs.
Seth Curry (23 points) surprised me most. Almost exclusively a three-point shooter last year, he attacked the basket frequently against UK. He got into the lane with ease. Since Nerlens Noel tried to block every shot that was taken, any misses were easily put back by the Blue Devils (nine offensive rebounds).
The Wildcats are young. As Dick Vitale noted 17 times last night, you want to beat Kentucky now because come March, all the freshman will be much-improved.
I’m not ready to make any bold proclamations about anyone after a game or two or five.

Hat tip to KC Res on the MSU v. KU game last night…
November 14th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
What horrendous atmosphere for those two games last night. Who thought playing those games at a dome would be a good idea. Michigan State/Kansas looked half-full at best.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Your proclamation about Duke not being a top 25 team (after zero games) was bold. I guess that’s part of the blog business. Make splashy predictions. Occasionally they’re right, sometimes they’re wrong.

It’s November dude. Even with those major schools, it’s still a bit early to be forking out money to watch them play on a neutral site.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
It was bold. But I think J-Mac legitimately believed most people shared his opinion…I saw him call out a writer for having Duke in his top 10…but he stopped once he realized that EVERYBODY had Duke in their top 10.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
either way, basketball games should not be played in football stadiums
November 14th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Tigers to sign Tori Hunter.
Good signing. But a bit of an over payment. Now they should let Sanchez walk and look to trade for a closer or another starter.
Jackson, Hunter, Cabrera, Fielder, V-Mart has to be arguably the best 1-5 in MLB.

Agreed. I didn’t mean to sound like I was contradicting Cursed.

Atlanta in horrible atmosphere for a sporting event shocker.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
That’s the sports fan “business.”
Who do you think is winning this game?
Yes, you hit some, you miss some.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
Hunter is one of those guys who is still getting paid for his service when he was still a Twin. He will be a solid investment for the Tigers and a much needed defensive replacement. Shit. He could play 3rd and be an upgrade defensively.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
Yeah, I know he thought it was “laughable” that Luke Winn had them in the top 10.
I don’t mind if people make bold predictions, but when they imply that those who don’t agree with them are clueless, I gotta’ call them out if they are wrong. That said, it’s only one game. Duke could still end up being a disappointment and out of the top 25, and JMac could have the last laugh.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
I’m sorry, dropping Duke in the rankings after Plumlee changed his mind is indefensible and straight up trolling.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Plumlee is the catalyst. Even against a super-athletic kid like Noel, he looked dominant while on the floor. Curry will be a 15/game kind of guy, but Plumlee is the one carrying them deep in March.
Both of UK’s games have shown their complete lack of offense. They can score, but Cal has them set up to play 1-on-1, and they don’t have the talent this year (yet) to play that style. They’re also WAY too aggressive on defense. Especially going against a shot-fake heavy team like Duke, UK spent a majority of their time on defense in the air.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Luke Winn thinks highly of Duke this season. I don’t.
By season’s end, one of us will be right.
I fully expect another 20-something wins and a bid anywhere from 2-6 and another early exit (1st/2nd round).
Last year, season ended with a loss to a team “ranked” what, in the 40s? 50s?
November 14th, 2012 at 12:29 PM
It also ended without Ryan Kelly and with Austin Rivers being fucking awful.

November 14th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Correction: Luke Winn and pretty much every other college basketball writer.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Last year’s team was run by Austin Rivers….nuff said.
Plus, Lehigh wasn’t/isn’t a washover.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Also the other day you were shitting all over people for carrying over performances from the previous season in preseason rankings.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
I actually thought UK was at their best last night out of timeouts and off of set plays. The dribble drive isn’t producing what it normally produces because they weren’t really getting much of the “drive” part down last night. Not convinced Harrow will solve those problems, but I do think there’s still a bunch of potential there to be pretty good in March.
Duke getting hot over a 7 minute span (with Plumlee in foul trouble) won them the game.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Did the same thing against Maryland, and, by virtue, let them back into the game.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
I thought Duke would lose but beating Kentucky and not having to use three of the four new guys is rather encouraging.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Good effort by Josh Hairston during that period of time.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
That should still put them in the top 25.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
You’re talking to a guy (JMac) who had Rivers #2 in his mock draft last year and thought he would have averaged 25 ppg if not for Coach K holding him back.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Tyler Brey, #1 overall draft pick!!!!

Hairston playing the Lance Thomas role, minus the bling.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
The put backs he had after Curry’s few misses were outstanding in terms of anticipation.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
John Calipari is a choker!!
November 14th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Hate to say it, but he did play well. Just wish he would NEVER SHOOT OUTSIDE OF 12 FEET…Ugliest jump shot since Bill Cartwright.
Also love the Sulaimon kid. He knows he’s talented, but he also knows he’s a freshman. Not afraid to defer at the right time, but still able to knock it down. Seems to love playing defense. He’s like the anti-Rivers.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Clarksville, TN representing. Dude is a freak. Maybe he can fine tune his game the next 3 years.

November 14th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
Hunter actually played fairly well with the Angels…maybe not $18 mil a year good, but good enough to keep the contract from being an embarrasment. if it’s just two years it should be a decent signing for the Tigers, even though he probably won’t be as productive as he was last year.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
I thought once they signed Prince they were going to trade V-Mart since they had some insurance help on his contract last year.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
Hairston getting significant minutes if Plumlee gets in foul trouble has to be a concern for Duke fans. That said, he played well last night.
Talked with a UK fan last night, who honestly believed that Sulaimon was worse than Willie Cauley-Stein all because Rivals/Scout had him rated lower. One the most die-hard fan bases, but they are clueless.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
even though he probably won’t be as productive as he was last year.
Dude’s 37. There is no way he will be as good next year. The only thing I would worry about him is his SO rate was a lot higher and his BB were down. He was in a division with decent pitching so facing the pathetic pitching of Twins, Royals, and Meth Sox should help out his stats a little.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
Marshall Plumlee is back by mid December and will eat some minutes.

yeah his BABIP was absurdly high last year so there’s no chance he’s hitting .313 again, but I still think he can hit reasonably well. as you said, playing fewer games in Anaheim, Oakland and Seattle will help.

Poised to enter the prime of his career, then.

Poythress
He was guarded by 6-1 Thornton or 6-4 Freshman Sulaimon most of the night, what did you expect?
November 14th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
I don’t come here for the whiffs or hits. I come here for the gossip that I can’t find on actual sports sites–sites that have editors and are don’t often troll (I think that’s the right word for you more internet commenting savy folks). For example, why does your post about a game, a game you were way off on, have a title mentioning how many times a guy dunked in a losing cause? I don’t know if you do it on purpose anymore or if it comes natural–if natural, congrats. Either way, it’s growing old–and you must know this if you read any comments on this thing. I also understand being a tad salty since everyone gives you so much $hit all the time. Oh well, do whatever you want, it’s your site.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
you can go to “actual sports sites” for a recap. We’ll give you something else.
not salty at all. if we were struggling, sure. we had our best month ever last month. The staff is doing a great job. We’re having another banner month. I’d put our track record of breaking media news in the last 6 months up against anyone. We’ve got great stuff in the pipeline, two hard-working interns … things are good. If I’m salty, you’ll know.
