Texas A&M, With Impact Transfers on the Way, Will Be an SEC Force in 2013, May Open the Season Ranked 3rd Overall
Johnny Manziel, eight games into his college career, has Texas A&M fans dreaming of a National Championship. The freshman is dominating the SEC, and if you’re the type to look ahead … Texas A&M has enough returning talent on offense to open next season ranked in the Top 3.* The defense? Well …
2013 Depth chart:
Running back:
Lose senior Christine Michael, who is 2nd on the team in TDs (10), but junior Ben Malena (687 yards) returns. So does freshman Trey Williams, who was the 15th-rated rivals recruit in the country in 2012. But the big addition to next year’s offense: two star transfer running backs. Brandon Williams, who played as a true freshman at Oklahoma, will be eligible. Tra Carson, a who went to Oregon and played as a true freshman, transferred to the Aggies and will be eligible.
Wide receiver:
Lose senior Ryan Swope, the team’s second leading receiver (56 catches, team-leading 6 TDs). Freshman Mike Evans, a budding star at 6-foot-5, leads the team in receptions this year (61 catches). Another freshman, Thomas Johnson, is 3rd on the team in receptions (30). They’ve got a highly-touted 6-foot-6 freshman coming in, Derrick Griffin. He’s considered the 3rd best WR in the country by Rivals, and the 6th best player in the State of Texas.
Offensive line:
Only one senior on the line (center Patrick Lewis), but could lose junior tackle Luke Joeckel to the NFL draft (1st rounder). If they return four starters to go with that running talent … look out, SEC.
Defensive line/Linebackers/Secondary:
Experienced front seven is loaded with juniors and seniors. DL Damontre Moore leads the team in tackles, tackles for loss (20), sacks (12.5), and if the junior opts for the NFL, it’ll be a big loss and mean the Aggies lose their top four tacklers from this season. The biggest loss at linebacker will be OLB Sean Porter, who is an early-round draft pick. Sophomore Donnie Baggs will be the best returning LB on a young unit. They’ll lose just one starter in the secondary (senior Steven Terrell). The secondary, which features talented freshman DeVante Harris, will probably be the strength of the defense next year.
Recruiting: Texas has six Top 100 rivals recruits locked up; the Aggies just one. Will the Longhorns be able to retain all those recruits, or are some watching Johnny Manziel and maybe having second thoughts about going to Austin? And how many undecided talents will look at what Sumlin has built and want to play in College Station?
2013 Schedule: Eight home games. Eight! No Georgia. No Florida. No South Carolina. More good news: out-of-conference games are a joke – Rice, Sam Houston State, SMU, New Mexico. They get Alabama at home (early, too). Road games: at rebuilding Arkansas, at Ole Miss, at rebuilding Auburn. The toughest part of the schedule is at the end: Nov 23 at LSU; Nov. 30th at Missouri. If you don’t think much of Missouri, expectations will be 10-2 or 11-1 in the regular season. My guess is Vegas will set the over/under at 10.
* Without doing a deep dive on the rosters, I’ll just assume Oregon and Alabama are right there jostling with Texas A&M. LSU will lose a lot on defense. Notre Dame might be No. 4.

Aren’t you the guy who rails on preseason rankings?

A stiff breeze has Aggie fans dreaming of NC’s.
Aren’t you the guy who rails on preseason rankings?
He loves rankings. He does preseason rankings for the next season immediately after the prior season is over.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:41 PM
And Johnny Fucking Football will be in jail this time next year.

JMc? He loves this stuff.

So true. Delusion is a commodity never in short supply in College Station.

Also a budding star, Tyrann Mathieu.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:46 PM
I do rail against preseason rankings. And will until they cease to exist. Which is probably never, unfortunately.
Does anyone return MORE offensive talent in the SEC?
November 13th, 2012 at 5:47 PM
A&M being ranked in the top three pretty much guarantees an absurd fall out of the top 25 by the end of next year so hope for that. Kind of like that one year Jevan Snead was at Ole Miss and everyone thought it was going to be awesome.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:48 PM
Jevan Snead
I still think he sounds like a character created by Dr.Seuss.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:49 PM
correct, GFunk.
Nice Snead reference.

Sure, I guess, in the sense that they continue to influence the polls throughout the year. But you also love ranking teams and players from the farthest distances you can muster.

nothing would please me more than to watch the Hogs skull fuck aTm this game.

Joeckel might go as high as first in the draft. And Bruce Matthews kid, whatever his name is, is also a high draft choice (like maybe 12th or higher, 3rd/4th tackle to go) if he decides to go.
They aren’t returning 4 starters. They might just be returning the guards.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:57 PM
OSU will open in the top 3 easily.
November 13th, 2012 at 6:00 PM
Yes. Texas recruits don’t give a fuck about Johnny Football.

That’s college football only, right? And I agree with that.
College hoops rankings. KU is 7th. MSU is 15th. MSU is going to kill KU tonight. I just think rankings in college hoops are meaningless since they aren’t used by The Committee.
Holy shit. Just turned on ESPN.

This. It will be surprising if they don’t have to replace two unbelievable tackles. Maybe they can do it seamlessly.
I wasn’t aware how easy their schedule is next year. The Aggie momentum could be extremely strong. Already the 2014 recruiting class in Texas is going to be a war.
November 13th, 2012 at 6:19 PM
It wouldn’t be outlandish to say that Texas will return more offensive talent than the Aggies.

Hope that wasn’t a JMac, I got MSU +3.5
November 13th, 2012 at 6:30 PM
No way.
November 13th, 2012 at 6:35 PM
KU might be great at the end of the year. But they are awful now. They beat Washburn (DII school out of Topeka) 62-50 at Allen Field House. Can’t shoot. I’m not sure what the point total is, but I don’t think there will be a lot of points.

Jebus. It was MSU +1.5 this morning. I just read the newspaper and noticed it. did someone die today?
November 13th, 2012 at 6:36 PM
And I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind regarding bets. I hate those type of people. I’ve seen KU play three times and MSU once against a quality opponent. Just an honest opinion. Eight freshman, a couple seniors, and it’ll take awhile for Self to figure out the rotation.

Hasn’t this been their MO the last few years?

Funniest thing ever written on this site. Oh yes recruits are going to decommitt and pass up all the poon in Austin to go to Bum F College Station because of one game.
November 13th, 2012 at 8:44 PM
LOL. Amateur hour over here in the comments section. ArkBadger, skull fuck? Oh you mean that thing A&M did to yall back on September 29th in “Bum F College Station”? Yeah that shit was too easy and good luck with the revolving door of coaches over the next 15 years, chump. Next up we’ve got a SMU fan? A SMU FAN? BOY daddy musta bought you a big shiny pair a nuts the way you spout off on the keyboard. Didnt realize SMU actually had fans actually, because back on, oh, uhm, September 15th the stadium was occupied by nothing but maroon after halftime. KU fan, you shouldn’t even be allowed to comment on college football posts, it’s just clown shit every-single-damn-time. Then cue the know-nothings talkin’ bout texas HS players don’t give a shit about Johnny Football. Hrrrmmmmm, well maybe they care about playing in the SEC, beating the hell out of number one teams in the nation, smashing hot white girls with rich daddys, putting up big numbers, or playing in the rowdiest, loudest, best damn college football stadium in the state of god damn Texas. WheresWallace, one game? How about 8 games, and the fact that TU is downright embarrassing this year. Some one please point out where im wrong here.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:29 PM
What a fucking dumbass.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:41 PM
Wow.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:51 PM
I’m laughing my ass off. This brightened my evening.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:52 PM
You’re right. Fickle 17/18 year old kids never change their mind in the recruiting game.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:53 PM
Typical Aggie.
Except mint.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:02 PM
Typical Aggie. MP
It is. Every Aggie fan (except for Mint) uses the Uzi approach to talking shit. Just spray shit at everyone everywhere.
Bonus points for him referring to Texas as “TU” and doing the Aggie thing by prefacing the state of Texas as “god damn.”
Textbook example. I hope our East Coast brethren here now realize what some of us went through. The SEC deserves aTm.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:20 PM
I love how they are in the exact same spot they always occupied in the big 12, middle of the conference.
November 13th, 2012 at 11:47 PM
Whenever I see aTm I always think of ass to mouth: AtxDoucheski just made sure that will never change…
November 13th, 2012 at 11:50 PM
So aggie fans are just like fans of Baltimore sports teams…
November 14th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
#yessir KU we call that the shotgun approach here in Texas. Been a TBL follower for a long damn time, so go ahead and expect more. And Mr.Webb, im sorry your mother neglected you as a child sir, but everyone knows, you never go ass to mouth.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Holy shit, go back to Texags dude. I had A&M back in the good graces of the commentariat after two years of hard work.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Yeah man clearly you did judging by the previous comments. Bet you voted for obama too! Lolol I can’t handle texags, sounds like my whiny girlfriend during last season.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
wouldnt be shocked to see matthews leave early.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
good approach.
