Kentucky vs. Duke: Remember When Christian Laettner Hit That Shot? UK Freshman Willie Cauley-Stein Doesn’t
Remember this? Arguably the most memorable shot in NCAA tournament history. It has to be right up there with Lorenzo Charles in 1983 in the waning moments of the National Championship game.
Well, Kentucky freshman center Willie Cauley-Stein, who probably will battle a Plumlee on the interior most of the night, isn’t familiar with the shot.
Kentucky survived Maryland Friday night, 72-69, but didn’t look impressive in doing so. Maryland had 23 offensive rebounds and couldn’t make shots (33 percent).
Maybe that’s why Duke is a 3.5 point favorite in Atlanta tonight? Kentucky will be without point guard Ryan Harrow (flu), the NC State transfer who didn’t do much in 10 minutes against the Terps. I’m one of the few people not enamored with Duke this year. I don’t think the Blue Devils are a Top 10 or even Top 20 team. I think Maryland has a better roster and will finish the year better than the Blue Devils.
Our pal Bobby Knight will call the game on ESPN [UPDATE: No! He just called the first game! Sweet!], so we’ll recommend in advance you watch it on mute.

Bias’d.

Our pal Bobby Knight
Well done.

Hey. This post is back.
November 13th, 2012 at 8:41 PM
I don’t think anyone is “enamored” with Duke. They’ve been starting the season in the 8-10 range for the last few years outside of 2010-11. They have defensive problems but got rid of the biggest problem on their team (Rivers) and have Kelly back. They’re going to score points, and they have one of the best offensive frontcourts in the game, they’re at best an Elite Eight team though.
You’re the only person who dropped them when their best player decided to come back for his senior year though, I guess that means everyone else is enamored.
November 13th, 2012 at 8:42 PM
That being said no idea how they’re favorites tonight. Just hope this isn’t as bad as the OSU game last season.
November 13th, 2012 at 8:53 PM
You also thought Austin Rivers was a top 5 pick. Excuse me if i’ll consider the source.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:08 PM
I remember Laettner stomping on that dude’s chest earlier in the game. Shouldn’t have even been on the floor at that later moment.
Sometimes, I hate sports. This was one of those times. Boo Duke.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:08 PM
Um, since he wasn’t yet born at the time, it might be hard for him to recall it.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:09 PM
Kentucky ML.
but after the Butler flop today … Duke will probably win by 15
November 13th, 2012 at 9:19 PM
Just watched The Crossing, about Washington leading his troops across the Delaware. Damn, that guy had brass balls.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:21 PM
Still remember my friend I was watching the Laettner game with: Brett Fox. We went elementary/high school together. Nice guy. He’s a lawyer now. We were in my basement. We ran around like nerds after the shot. Just incredible. I know I liked Mashburn a lot at the time but Don’t remember who I was rooting for.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:23 PM
I was watching it at a bar in Charleston, West By God with a group of buddies. We went fucking nuts when the shot went in.
The next year, I was in the same bar when BC upset Notre Dame.
Good times.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:36 PM
That was the year Kansas, the best team in the tourney, lost to UTEP in the second round.
Rinse, repeat.
Where I was for Duke/Kentucky. I remember watching it, but now where. And that was a different time. That was the scoring era in college hoops. I can’t imagine two high quality teams putting up points like that and the game still being competitive.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:36 PM
but now where.
?
but don’t know where.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:41 PM
So Knight called the first game, now Dickie V on the Duke/UK game?? Wow, that’s great
November 13th, 2012 at 9:45 PM
I could root for Kentucky if all of the starters had high top fades.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:48 PM

Did you see how fat he is now? I mean, holy shit. He is fat.

Archie Goodwin looks so impressive. Great bounce.

Classic. Textbook. That is an Aggie fan.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:56 PM
Good to see Duke still can’t shoot freethrows.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:56 PM
Annnnnnnnnd this game is pretty much over.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:58 PM
Mole is the duke version of TBL and the jets jinxes

And I mean Knight. His sweater was struggling to contain his belly.

That sporadic part time job i had doing survey research over the phone? Lets hear it for the local call center closing at year’s end! Consolidation and 40-50 people losing jobs FTW! Ugh..
November 13th, 2012 at 9:59 PM
Nah, Duke aren’t going to be able to hang with this team this early in the season.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:02 PM
Sorry ap
November 13th, 2012 at 10:03 PM
ESPN.com has Marshall Plumlee and Rodney Hood playing in this game so far. Plumlee has a busted foot and is out hurt, Hood is sitting out a year because he’s a transfer. Midseason form.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:16 PM
Noel is getting absolutely bitched by Plumlee. Honestly didn’t see that coming.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:19 PM
So weird to see Bruce Weber coaching KState.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:20 PM
Plumlee is closer to anthony davis than Noel is right now.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:21 PM
Plumlee is one of the best players in the country, but he doesn’t have a wacky haircut so nobody gives a shit.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:25 PM
Just some awful free throw shooting from both teams.
Also nice hook shot Noel, you walking recruiting violation.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:29 PM
Plumlee is one of the best players in the country, but he doesn’t have a wacky haircut so nobody gives a shit. Mole
Maybe he needs a wacky nickname.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:39 PM
Showalter screwed out of AL Manager of the Year. This sport cannot do anything right.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:39 PM
so nobody has scored except Duke seniors? well, that won’t hold up. Curry/Kelly 1-dimensional.
UK should win.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:41 PM
Cook and Hairston have scored. Sulaimon going 0-7 won’t hold up either.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:45 PM
One of Kelly/Plumlee will foul out at this rate and that will be the difference but I’m happy with how the seniors are playing. So nice to not have Rivers anymore. Sulaimon and Cook more assists than Kentucky’s entire team.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:47 PM
Yeah, because Bob Melvin didn’t deserve it after leading his team from 13 games back to WIN THE DIVISION. Sometimes you just need to be quiet and not let your homerism show. Get over it
November 13th, 2012 at 10:48 PM
Bilas is right..UK point guard play is invisible. We’ll see who emerges as the season rolls along
November 13th, 2012 at 10:49 PM
I’ve never understood caring about if your guy wins an award if you don’t win the title. Malkin winning MVP last year didn’t make the season any less of a failure.
November 13th, 2012 at 10:56 PM
Wet!
November 13th, 2012 at 10:59 PM
Id like to see this UK team against Syracuse. SU has a better lineup than last year especially in the front court. I do like that the SU starting lineup is 6’4″, 6’6″, 6’8″, 6’10″, and 6’11″… And no fab melo to flunk classes and not catch the ball
November 13th, 2012 at 11:00 PM
I thought they were 1 and 1A. Gotta give it to the guy that wins a division. I’m too lazy to go back and look, but I’m guessing the pre-season predictions for their respective teams were comparable.
November 13th, 2012 at 11:03 PM
How does that size impact referees who are being paid by Ohio State to compensate for Thad Matta’s horrible coaching?
And there goes Plumlee for a while. Oh well. Once Marshall is healthy they will be able to rotate more anyway.
November 13th, 2012 at 11:04 PM
I would have been fine if Buck won it instead of Melvin. I just knew that the baltimore contingent would whine and moan about it as usual. NOBODY GIVES US RESPECT
November 13th, 2012 at 11:05 PM
Mole, dont remind me,..still hurts.
November 13th, 2012 at 11:08 PM
As a fan of a team that lost 119 games less than 10 years ago and has been to two World Series since, I’d say that’s a pretty lame statement.
November 13th, 2012 at 11:15 PM
As a fan of a team that lost 119 games less than 10 years ago and has been to two World Series since
If only the Yankees would lose that many games, then a storm would really be a brewin’ up in NYC.
November 13th, 2012 at 11:15 PM
This Duke team is so much better without ballhog Rivers. A lot of offenses early in the year struggle due to new players and such, but theirs looks really crisp early. That’ll be a huge advantage going into ACC play.
Plumlee is pretty much going to go beastmode on the ACC. Who’s going to stop him except the refs?
November 13th, 2012 at 11:18 PM
Buck/Melvin, toss a coin.
Dukie V. is really laying it on thick tonight.
November 13th, 2012 at 11:21 PM
Wallace, the big dude on Miami will make it misrable for plumlee.
November 13th, 2012 at 11:23 PM
Saw about your job, A.P. That sucks, man. They’re bringing a couple extra things here, it’s all temporary seasonal stuff. See all these excited faces and can’t remind them that they won’t be smiling for long. 2 separate groups are getting trained for 2 weeks a piece. Then they are only going to work for a month. In fact, the last group is only going to get 3 weeks. I know it’s better than nothing, but still. Almost wonder what’s the point.
November 13th, 2012 at 11:26 PM
The same Miami that lost by 12 to Florida Gulf Coast?
November 13th, 2012 at 11:27 PM
To be fair they did win at Cameron last year and I’m assuming he means Kenny Kadji who is indeed a fucking beast.
November 13th, 2012 at 11:33 PM
/pours one out for the Bear
//pours another for Bice
November 13th, 2012 at 11:39 PM
I was referring to Reggie Johnson..a more talented tractor traylor
November 13th, 2012 at 11:40 PM
Alex P (i won’t try to spell his last name without looking it up) is a beast. why he isn’t posting up is beyond me.
Little Curry has had an impressive game. Gotten much more aggressive this year. Like his game.
November 13th, 2012 at 11:44 PM
I can’t wait to see Jefferson and Murphy play. Duke has some really interesting options with wing play and forwards once Marshall gets back.
November 13th, 2012 at 11:58 PM
He’s not sharing the ball with a black hole this year.
November 14th, 2012 at 12:03 AM
He’s a freshman. LeBron James spent 9 years in the NBA before he developed a post game.
UK will be fine, nothing matters in CBB but March anyways.
