Matt McGloin Buys Into Anti-Penn State Conspiracy Following Controversial Fumble Call and Nebraska Loss
Penn State lost to No. 16 Nebraska on Saturday. Midway through the 4th quarter, trailing by 4, Matt Lehman took a short pass and appeared to score before losing the football into the endzone. Nebraska recovered the ball, the referees reviewed the play and despite clear video evidence of a touchdown, upheld the fumble call. Penn State went on to lose, 32-23. After the game, Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin explained why he wasn’t surprised. From Centre Daily:
“We’re not going to get that call here,” McGloin said. “We’re not going to get the call ever, actually, against any team. It doesn’t matter who the refs are.”
“It’s us against the world and we’re not going to get those calls in these types of games,” McGloin said. “It looked to me and everyone else like he got across. I guess they saw something else.”
An anti-Penn State conspiracy. Unless you attended/attend Penn State, you’re probably rooting against the school after the whole Jerry Sandusky scandal. Does it really extend all the way to the replay booth though? Probably not. Maybe the referees didn’t have the camera view that showed it was a touchdown. Or it was just plain incompetence. Either way, its more fun for everyone if we believe the referees and the College Football Illuminati are out to get Penn State. Well, more fun for everyone except Penn State.

Thaaaaaanks refs.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Uh, nope. Ive actually heard quite the opposite from a lot of people I’ve talked to also. Good for these kids, who had nothing to do with anything, for having a decent season. Also, go Billy O!
November 12th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Put up the NFL Post!
November 12th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
How does this not have a link or 6? Married CRM is slipping.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
I think it has more to do with the fact that refs are unwilling to overturn their own calls.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
I don’t agree with the McGloin’s stance — I think this is just the same garden variety officiating incompetence you see in football every week — but I certainly don’t blame him for the opinion. When you get railroaded and unfairly punished by the media and NCAA, these types of reactions will occur. I’m sure the fact that it was directly responsible for the loss didn’t help, either.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Sad.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Gamblers should be more outraged.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Yes, yes it does.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
It’s called Big Ten officiating Matt. You’ve been aroung long enough to recognize it. Quit being a bitch.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
bad call. period. and i hated PSU long before the sandusky event.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Great, now we’re going to get another Franco Harris press conference
November 12th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Full disclosure, I am a PSU Football fan, but not an alum. I generally never believe in conspiracy theories like this, I’m still not sure that I do. But after seeing some of the absolutely horrific and many times phantom calls against them over the weeks it’s getting hard not to think there is something else at play. The Personal Foul called against a PSU defender in the first quarter of the OSU game on a play where the ball was thrown into the OSU bench. Phantom call. This call against Nebraska? I don’t blame the on field refs for getting it wrong, it was a bang bang play but the replay officials? Even the announcers didn’t hold back on how horrible of a call it was. Not sure who else was watching the game but did they see the Sideline Interference Penalty that was called on PSU? Again, ripped by the announcers. What’s even funnies is that Sideline Interference can only be called during a live ball and the penalty is for 5 yards on first and second offenses. The ball was out of bounds and was a dead ball when the ref through the call and then he made it a 10 yard penalty. The ref literally made up a penalty. Not to mention PSU has only had 1 holding penalty called against their opponents offense in the last 12 quarters. One. How is that even possible? Like I said, I don’t believe in conspiracies but something isn’t on the up and up.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Unless you attended/attend Penn State, you’re probably rooting against the school after the whole Jerry Sandusky scandal.
Nope. I wish the best for those guys that had the opportunity to transfer and didn’t.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Now unless they are serious students I am the total opposite.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
funnies=funnier…
through the call= threw the flag
Apparently I took my idiot pills this morning.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Yeah, ever see a Michigan game? It’s downright criminal.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
i agree PSU’s officiating has been suspect, but in the OSU game, PSU linemen were holding the entire night too. there were horrible no-calls on both sides for that all game long.
just happens that PSU had some bad calls at horrible points in the game.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
They are absolutely brutal.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
People get all worked about whenever the word “conspiracy” is uttered. They imagine smoke-filled rooms full of plotting lizard-people. The better word here is bias. PSU isn’t getting calls because a lot of people don’t like PSU right now. Doesn’t happen every time and its not an organized effort. But it happens enough.
This…I’m not sure what this was. Do I think a booth official sees a clear TD but doesn’t overturn the call because he’s appalled at the “football culture” there? That’s possible but not plausible. I think its a combination of incompetence and unwilling to damage the officiating fraternity.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
I don’t understand why anyone who didn’t already root against Penn State would be rooting against them now.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
Kind of a Judeo-christian ethos of martyring oneself on some bullshit. Talking about an institution who profited from rape abetting you have a moral imperative to leave the school.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
Absolutely, but they were getting called for it, a few times at least. I mean, holding happens on just about every play, I get that but like I said, 1 call in 12 quarters, when everyone knows holding happens all game, every game is just insane.
Conspiracy seems more believable now than just flat out ignorance and incompetence which is the only other option really.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
What is the reason for the conspiracy theory with Stanford non-TD call? Do the refs like some pedophiles, but not others?
November 12th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
This entire situation has been irrational. Rooting against the football team because of this scandal is no different than blaming football for what happened. Once you determine that the football team deserved to be punished for a criminal act that didn’t involve them, its a short bridge to rooting against the team.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
as they should’ve…OSU;s DL was whooping on the PSU OL all night, the greater blatancy being the difference.
but you wont see me defend the punt shit and the goal-line holdtastrophe.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
So they can show how much they hate sexual abuse of children seems to be the general sentiment.
Here’s a question though, as a PSU fan, I try and be as unbiased as possible but before this whole disgraceful incident what reasons would people have for hating PSU? It’s one thing to hate them if you’re team is a rival of PSU’s, that I get but outside of that? Why hate them? I’m not saying they are perfect, I am just curious what people’s reasons would be.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
So I guess this concussion plotline will be the entirety of next season of Boardwalk. Jesus.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
i thought last night was the 2nd last episode of the season…turns out there are 3 more. hopefully they get this shit wrapped up.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Its not a conspiracy. There isn’t an organization systematically ensuring that PSU gets screwed by the officials. Its likely that some officials don’t like that the team is playing football and is perhaps less/more willing to throw flags or let certain plays go.
Football teams with a reputation often get a shorter leash. Ask Pittsburgh and Baltimore.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
So Billie Kent didn’t make it?
November 12th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
Like I said, once you agree that the football team has any culpability in this scandal and deserved NCAA punishment, it’s really easy to then hate the team and want them to fail.
November 12th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
I think they will. I don’t see Gyp making it past this season and that makes me happy.
I found it interesting that Rothstein, Lucky and Lansky wouldn’t back Nuchy considering it was their failed assassination attempt on Gyp that started this whole thing.
That said, once they realize Gyp is going after them as well then they will mob up and do what they do.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
why would they? nucky doesn’t really have an army of his own, and without him, they’re free to negotiate with chicago on their own for a greater profit. if anything, gyp being busy with nucky makes him an easier target since joe and gyp’s forces are split.
nucky’s got the ultimate card tho with the Fed shit. he’d easily be able to blackmail rothstein back like he did to remus.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
They did nothing about a known child rapist, not even taking their names off the charity that procured victims. Motives for silence being what? It was too icky to talk about or protecting the program? Of course I want to the football program to suffer, some things deserve far reaching consequences. Sucks for the players but they chose to stay.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
blackmail rothstein back not like he did to remus, but by using remus as an example…sorry.*
November 12th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
that aint much clearer…fuck it. lunchtime.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
What the fuck did the little kid say to Richard? I rewound it three times and have no idea.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Notre Dame is in the Big Ten? Then that conference absolutely DOES have a chance at the National Championship.
/”Good job, good effort,” NCAA whores.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Fans of the Penn State football program (I’m an alum) have lorded that “doing it right” thing over non-Penn State programs for a long time.
People love to see the humiliation of what is perceived to be a self-righteous institution.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
This is also a large part of it.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
“i want to go home”…?
/trying to remember off top of my head
November 12th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
Oh yeah that makes sense.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
I asked why hate them, prior to all this going down. If everyone hates them now because of this ok that I get. I find it wrong but I get it. But I was talking about people who hated them before that.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
esp if you’re a fan of a team that PSU fans threw tons of barbs at for fucking tattoos…sucks for those kids, but PSU fans had it coming.
win occasionally with honor, linebacker who?
November 12th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
if gretchen mol’s character gets killed brutally by gyp…well, id like that.
also, loved gyp’s line last night…”bible camp’s cancelled. and this aint really a question-answer session.” b/w that and the scene with his daughters/MIL/wife and then the scene with joe, he was winning me over…then he had to fucking put on that ridiculous fucking hat. god damnit.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Because they started the whole thing by trying to kill Gyp and failing. Gyp was fine with just being prick and screwing Nuchy’s business. But when Lansky and Lucky tried to kill him that is what spurred Gyp to go to Masseria and vow to kill them all, starting with blowing up the place on the boardwalk.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
Boring offense? Dunno.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
That scene was….unfortunate.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
At first I loved Gyp, he was so ridiculous that it was laughable. Then they generalized the shit out of him so I got over his character pretty fast. That said, he does have a lot of hilarious one-liners. The whole thing with the hat though, that was just dumb.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
This show has topped the rat at the end of The Departed for most hamfisted pointless imagery at this point.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
That’s more of a reason why PSU fans hated their own team. Their offense was unbelievable. Prior to this year I had seen more evolved offenses in high schools…10 years ago.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
which adds to my conspiratorial syndicate speculation…they started the shit with gyp. if they kill him, they’re all better off…if they don’t and gyp lived, it allows them to cut out a partner and see greater returns while distracting the guy they wanted to kill originally and giving them an opportunity to seize power with a divided enemy.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
Masseria doesn’t get murdered until 1931 so I guess he will take over as the bad guy next year.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
My thoughts exactly.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
I live in PA and grew up hating against and rooting against PSU (mainly because everyone worshiped the school, JoePA, Sandusky)… but after the scandal, and watching how the players and students have responded (other than the JP riots) – I’ve grown to respect so many of them. I definitely find myself rooting for them much more now than I did before.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
As both a gambler (had PSU +7.5) and a PSU fan I was doubly outraged when I wasn’t vomiting in the bowels of Memorial Stadium.
/seriously, is it so hard to put a fucking bathroom in the upper deck area
//Memorial Stadium is a shithole relative to fan convenience
November 12th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
this guy …
November 12th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Nebraska loses and the Big Ten has no team in the top 20 BCS standings..they already have OSU out because of sanctions, they needed their best team in. Don’t think it put it passed Delaney to say if its close go big red
November 12th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
reums/masseria vs. rothstein and luciano/lanksy (eventually) vs. nucky/torrio/capone?
November 12th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
McGloin is a fiery ginger, runs off at the mouth sometimes. Thats why one of his own teammates kicked his ass last year.
No conspiracy, just incompetence. If you’ve watched every game it feels like they havnent gotten a single 50/50 call, but shit happens, you have those years.
And Jim Delaney needs to go, your conference is a joke.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
I would think, eventually, they would write in Salvatore Maranzano’s character at some point.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
I’m, in a weird way, rooting for Penn State since these kids getting punished for what grown men did and covered up isn’t really fair IMO. but whatever. That train has passed.
Surprised TBL hasn’t mentioned this, but the following story is why people think players and coaches bet on games. BYU was 40 point favorites at Idaho. They were up 39. They kick a field goal (!) on the 4 yard line with 2 minutes left to go up 42. That’s a little fishy. Why not just run it and turn the ball over if you don’t score? Idaho goes 3 and out and punts. BYU fumbles the punt, Idaho recovers on BYU 22 with 6 seconds left. Idaho KICKS A FIELD GOAL on the next snap down 42(!) to cover the spread. I didn’t have money on this game, but why the hell are they kicking a field goal? I know the coaches have their reasons, but this is how conspiracy stuff starts.
/full circle
November 12th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
The war between him and Masseria’s families and the boss of bosses stuff would be a great final season but maybe they just scoot that up a bit historically.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
I think that is definitely something that happens next year and the show probably ends with Nuchy going to jail which I think is 1941 or close to it.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Jim Delany has helped make some rich guys a lot richer. Those guys tend to not get fired.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
Could this be the same crew that ensured the ND wins over Stanford and Pitt? Powers that be are working it both ways this season.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
Roeth, outside of the massive upchucking, how was the trip to Lincoln? Always liked that town.
November 12th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
I enjoy watching Penn State lose as much as anybody. And while I think it’s crazy to say there is a conspiracy. The idea of bias seems certainly reasonable. Regardless of the reason (incompetence/bias/conspiracy), that was a terrible call.
November 12th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
The B1G has some seriously shitty referees, I am a Nebraska fan and I think that call sucked, the safety call was kind of shitty too. Until the last two weeks I kind of felt like Nebraska was getting fucked on calls, maybe because they were new to B1G…now I think the officials just suck
November 12th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Let me get this straight McGloin and fellow PSU whiners. Your contention is that the replay official reviewed the play, knew it was wrong, and said nothing? Sound familiar??? Hmmmmm
November 15th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
“Maybe the referees didn’t have the camera view that showed it was a touchdown” So Stephen Douglas-you sugest that the refs did not see the video included above? Are you on drugs?
