Heisman 2012 Power Rankings Week 11: Upset Moves Johnny Manziel to Forefront
Voters will begin filling out ballots. The race has seen fluctuations – Geno Smith was once a 1/1 favorite – though opinions are hardening. We list six, because we feel there are six players with a shot to reach New York. Here is how they stand right now.
Johnny Manziel [Texas A&M] Johnny Football beat Alabama in sparkling fashion. He completed 78 percent of his passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns. He added another 91 yards on the ground. He should finish the season with more than 4,000 total yards and, potentially, 40 touchdowns. He has the feel-good narrative and the iconic win. He’s on top at present, but, without a marquee matchup left, he will be off the national radar.
Collin Klein [Kansas State] Klein was strong in a weak field. The field has caught up and is putting up far more explosive numbers. Klein is winning, but he has not thrown a touchdown pass his last two games. He has been held under four yards per carry. He’s doing enough to carry Kansas State to the BCS Title Game, but not to win the Heisman. With no title game, he may need a huge game against Texas.
Kenjon Barner [Oregon] Barner was slowed by an injury last week, though still pulled off a decent 100 yards on 23 touches. He has three prime opportunities left against Stanford, Oregon State and (probably) USC. To win, he must stand out in those games. Doing so could push him toward 2,000 yards and 30 touchdowns. That may be enough to eek out a narrow win.
Marqise Lee [USC] Lee’s numbers are sick. He has 1,447 yards and 13 touchdowns on 98 catches this season. The trouble is his promotional campaign is both late and obvious. Kiffin ran the ball six times with him last week, has discussed using him on defense and, normally unwilling to discuss injuries, played up his allergic reaction to the media. Great player, but he will be hurt by USC’s disappointing season and the rest of his season being a Kiffin production.
Manti Te’o [Notre Dame] Notre Dame keeps winning and not allowing points. Te’o padded his stats with another interception. There does not seem to be much he can do to win, though needing to award someone for an undefeated Notre Dame finish could see him rack up a number of lesser votes.
Marcus Mariota [Oregon] Chip Kelly turned him loose on the road at USC and Cal the past two weeks. He threw for nearly 700 yards and 10 touchdowns, not to mention the 138 rushing yards on 21 carries. He has the same opportunity as Barner to make a statement the next three games. It might be too late to get him to the podium this season, though he should be a frequent resident in coming years.

This is an absolutely fantastic read.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
im not sure why this tired, obvious piece of commentary had me nodding in agreement, but it did…
November 12th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
There are still too many idiotic sportswriters/Heisman voters who will refuse to vote for a freshman for the Heisman on the grounds that a freshman has never won the Heisman before.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
Give it to the freshman.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
same ones who rank teams in the preseason based on history/last year, sadly.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
Might as well. No one has really put themselves ahead of the pack like we see most years. Manziel has as good of stats as anyone in the running.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
agreed.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
And keep basing their in-season rankings on the preseason rankings.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Klein had a few big games, but it’s pretty clear he exposed teams that aren’t exactly powerhouses.
Manziel has been the man.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
Being the exception to the rule … absolutely give it to the freshman … There’s precedence, after all.
/What’s the rule? Be the only SEC QBs that doesn’t suck. It worked for Cam.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
let’s just get these out of the way now:
You can’t win the Heisman as a freshman.
You can’t win the Heisman as a QB on a team with multiple losses.
That’s the stupidest stuff, right? Well I already said it, so nobody else has to. For this exercise, I’ll be the stupid guy.

i thought tebow did…
November 12th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
He has the feel-good narrative
Feel good story of the year.
Seaton says an officer on bike patrol intervened to break up a fight between Hanziel and McKinney. McKinney told the officer that Brant, Manziel’s friend, called him a racial slur and he approached Brant. Seaton says Manziel then shoved McKinney and the two exchanged punches.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
yea, tebow did.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
Just smashing through boundaries.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
IIRC RG3 and Baylor lost 2 or 3 games last year.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
Who did Manziel beat outside of Alabama? I like the kid a lot but he’s one for 3 against good teams.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
I know he got his ass handed to him a few weeks after collecting the trophy.

I reread his post and think you might be right. The mystery of Dirt goes on.

Paul Hornung did as a QB, on an 2-8 team. Quick quiz: which school?
November 12th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
sorry…been all potted up on weed lately.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
Manziel was essentially shut down against Florida and Lsu at home. That should hurt.
In bobs 3 losses last year, he played his ass off and still put up giant numbers.

You’ve been gone for a week. We were out of practice.

I figured you just wanted to stir the pot a little, so I ignored it.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:30 PM
Ah, yes. The Fightin’ Presbyterians. I think Memphis played ‘em this year. SDMSCT won 38-14.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
Too easy, SROD.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
I’m still upset that Terry Baker won the 1962 Heisman because he took Oregon State to the Final Four the previous school year.
/ Jerry Stovall got jacked!

read this, if you’re bored, about that Heisman vote. Especially the Jim Brown parts.

jesus christ jim brown was a helluva athlete.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
Is the thing about Heisman voters already having cast their ballot by this point in the season still a thing?
November 12th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
You can’t win the Heisman as a QB on a team with multiple losses.
Some QBs with multiple losses have, but … how many of those losses came after the ballots were completed and mailed.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
jesus christ jim brown was a helluva athlete.
he would have beaten Jim Thorpe in any event, and then to death if they’d crossed paths.

I assume people are sitting on their ballots this year. Gotta wait and see what Johnny Fucking Football does against Sam Houston St.

And then both of their girlfriends?
November 12th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
That’s a part of what I found fascinating about this line of thought, starting with your comment 11. We had arch sarcasm, statistical inconsistency, Notre Dame legends, and a chance for any of us to go off on tangents.
You opened up pathways that any of us could take, in different directions, and end up in nearly the exact same space. Well done, good sir.
And, OBTW, we will never see another athlete like Jim Brown in our lifetimes. What versatility, and physically dominant to boot.
November 12th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
jesus christ jim brown was a helluva athlete.
And a hell of an actor.

Indeed. Left out the Bernie Fine and Mickey Loomis fuckups, too.
ESPN is a joke. I cant remember the last time I turned it on for something other than a live sporting event. Maybe Gameday.
JMac, why don’t you guys have big investigative pieces like this? You have the connections. Also, do you think the network’s “all-Tebow” approach facilitated your access to Jets camp?
November 12th, 2012 at 4:55 PM
Best exchange from Spencer’s link:
JOSE: Arkansas is a top 5 team next year.
RITTY: For about 2 weeks…then they’ll lose.
JOSE: You do realize that Arkansas lost the 3rd game of the year in 2011 and finished in the top 5, right? Not saying Arkansas will lose to Bama, but one things for sure, we definitely will do better than Auburn will.
Well…Arkansas HAS done better than Auburn…but that’s about the extent of it.

Ballots go out tomorrow so it would be difficult to have already voted.
November 12th, 2012 at 5:08 PM
times were so much simpler before Bobby Petrino drove into a fucking ditch.
November 12th, 2012 at 5:15 PM
This was good.
OSU is absurdly high, they have no offensive playmakers. Urban is a good coach, but theres no Percy Harvin on that team.
