Arkansas Wants Gary Patterson, Would He Leave TCU?
Coaching Search.com reported that TCU’s Gary Patterson is Arkansas’ top candidate to replace Bobby Petrino. Arkansas radio host Bo Mattingly hears Patterson might have mutual interest. The appeal of Patterson for Arkansas is obvious. The question is whether he’d leave has current job.
TCU has joined the Big 12 and rebuilt its stadium. Patterson signed a lucrative contract extension. This is a much better job than when he arrived, and has reached the point that Arkansas is not an obvious step forward.
That said, Patterson has brought the Horned Frogs from Conference USA through the Mountain West to the Big 12. He has won 11 games six times in seven years and had an undefeated Rose Bowl winning season. He won’t replicate that success in his new conference, fighting an uphill battle with Texas, Oklahoma and others with fewer resources every year. The program has also had off the field problems. There was a major drug scandal last offseason. Star quarterback Casey Pachall had to leave school midseason to go to rehab.
Patterson is 52. He might not get many more opportunities to leave. Perhaps a lucrative pay package, a fresh start and a chance to compete against the nation’s best teams at a school with new facilities and a large fan base might not be the worst thing?

Be the 3rd or 4th best team in the Big 12 or the 3rd or 4th best team in the SEC? Seems pretty obvious for me. I would suspect Chris Petersen will likely leave Boise St. here soon, too. The TCU & Boise St. train has run its course.

what does the arkansas singing girl on youtube think of this?

Arkansas already wanted him and he was close to taking it before Jerry Jones vetoed it and got Petrino. At this point, I don’t know if he’d go back. A lot of good has happened at TCU since then. He is paid 3 million a year (+), wife loves TX, and he is a living legend in FW. Might be interest there but I doubt he pulls the trigger.

Nah, his kids got medical issues and he won’t leave because of that.
As for Patterson, I’d got to a state school. You’ll get a better retirement package.
November 9th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Not for Arkansas. Maybe if they offer to pay him more than Saban.
November 9th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
it = one win over a winning team. MAGICAL SEASON

Obvious, yet not supported by anything else in the post. Curious, that.

My fault, got that mixed up when reading. Yes, Patterson’s appeal is obvious. Arkansas’ appeal, however, is not.

Would you rather have Strong or Patterson?
November 9th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
malzahn.

nothing appealing about an SEC school with recent success, brand new facilities, a shit load of money and a nice area to live in? got it.

Jesus God. The Colts and Vikings both having winning records is an indictment of the mediocrity fest the NFL has become. Ghastly league.
November 9th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
That new practice field is pretty bad ayuss
November 9th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
either really, those are my top 2 choices. if I absolutely had to choose between the two, I think I would take Strong because he has ties to the state, but that is the only difference I have between the two. would be more than excited for either one.
no on Malzahn just because there would be too much friction around him right now, plus I would rather lean defense right now.

you talking about the one at Arkansas? it is pretty sweet, some crazy engineering on that thing, built on top of a parking deck.
November 9th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
O/T
Anyone who enjoys Emmett Smith “debacling” the English language should listen to Lavar Arrington on his DC-based radio show. Today’s example, from an interview with Charley Casserly: “You and I are of the same brain of thought on that topic.” Lavar is on his way.
End O/T
November 9th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
If TCU can afford to keep him, I don’t see him leaving. He’d be my #1 choice. Strong (or Pete Carroll) is my Dad’s favorite, he’d probably be my 2nd.
November 9th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
Lane Kiffin to arkansas!

he’s awful. His co-host, Chad Dukes, went to high school in VA with JMac.

David Petraeus quitting as head of CIA because he had an extramarital affair. Good job, good effort.
November 9th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
petrino, petraeus, who gives a shit?
November 9th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
People were saying the same things about Mark Few at Gonzaga basketball.
November 9th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
In his defense, Chad is pretty good on the Lavar show, given his limitation/sidekick, and his podcast, “Big O and Dukes,” is a damn funny product. End pimping.
November 9th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
been listening to them for years when they were on terrestrial radio
November 9th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
Gonzaga basketball is good every year (14 straight tournament appearances) but they havent advanced beyond the S16 since Dan Monson was coach. Butler has put them to shame the last few years.
November 9th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
It will be interesting to see how Butler and VCU do this year in the atlantic 10 conference
November 9th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
They need to bring John Stockton in to advise their point guards how to play defense!
