USC Fined For Deflating Balls, Blames Rogue Student Manager
The Pac 12 has fined and reprimanded USC for deflating game balls below NCAA regulated levels during the Oregon game. Officials found three deflated balls before the game and two more at halftime. The Trojans blamed a student manager gone rogue and have relieved him of his duties.
When informed of this allegation by the Pac-12, USC investigated it immediately. The student manager confirmed that he had, without the knowledge of, or instruction from, any USC student-athlete, coach, staff member or administrator, deflated those game balls after they had been tested and approved by officials prior to the game.
Offenses use their own balls. A slightly deflated ball is easier to throw and catch, offering an advantage while passing. Odds the student manager came up with this scheme without coach or player influence? Minimal.

Most overrated coach in CFB? I read somewhere that in six seasons as a coach in the NFL and NCAA he only has one signature win.

Off topic. Family headed to Lincoln for the PSU game this weekend. Any recommendations for dinner on Friday night or a family friendly bar to pregame at beforehand? Keep in my I’ll have both my parents (60 years plus), my kid (1.5 years old) and a pregnant wife in tow.

I was covering an AU practice once when Jason Campbell overthrew a pass. I nonchalantly stuck my hand out and tried to pull it in one-handed like I was in my backyard. Shit hurt. Those things are bricks when aired all the way up.

fucking USC. between this and having to change jersies to get an advantage over a team they are 45 point favorites over, they are having quite the season.

Roethlishotdog – head anywhere down in the Haymarket district (northwest downtown Lincoln). There are a plethora of good places to eat and get your drink on. I personally recommend Lazlo’s. But there are plenty of options. You guys should have a good time in Lincoln. Enjoy your trip.

You know it. I’m looking forward to it. My dad actually played for Nebraska back in the mid-60′s and it’s his first visit back to campus since (long story short – he got severely injured playing freshman ball and then never graduated).

Seriously. It’s pathetic.
Shocked that Lincoln has a hay market district. Shocked.

If you are there the night before, eat prime rib at Misty’s in Havelock.
For the Lincoln fast-food trifecta try: Runza, Amigos, & Valentinos. Guaranteed to shred your insides.

Perhaps we shouldn’t blame Kiffin. Based on how well Leinart, Sanchez, Cassell, and (to a lesser extent) Palmer have done in the NFL, this may have started long before he got there. More reason not to draft Matt Barkley (even though I’m sure my Chiefs will).
November 8th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
It certainly DID help! They scored 51 points. Barkley looked better than he ever has.
How would a manager know that deflated balls are easier to throw and catch if someone didn’t tell him? Whoever that kid is who took the fall for Kiffin will probably soon be seen driving around campus in a new car…and that little matter of tuition…don’t worry about it.

The pressure gauge was broken.
And how Tosh has the time to do that awful show of his and coach USC is beyond me.
