Danny Granger is Out 3 Months with Patellar Tendinosis, Eastern Playoff Picture Blown Wide Open
Danny Granger and the Pacers were up 2-1 on the Miami Heat in the playoffs last season, and it seemed like Indiana was a franchise ready to take that next step and maybe reach the NBA Finals. Derrick Rose was hurt, and Indiana had Miami on the ropes!
Then LeBron put on a show in Game 4, the Pacers went soft, and Indiana was left wondering about the direction of the franchise. Was there enough “star power” for Indiana to compete with Miami in the East?
In the offseason, Indiana elected to let backup PG Darren Collison walk, and also lost reserve Lou Amundson. They decided to give the core another year to make a run in the East.
A week into the season, and the Pacers have been hit with nothing but bad news: Collison’s replacement, DJ Augustin, is shooting 23 percent. Roy Hibbert can’t get the ball (8.8 shots per game; 8.8 ppg, both down from last season), and Danny Granger’s knee has kept him off the court.
That problem just became a nightmare: He’s out for three months.
So the Pacers, so close last postseason, will probably play until around the All-Star break without their leading scorer from last year. Will they get enough offense from David West, Paul George and George Hill to contend in the East? The guess here is no.
We’re only a week into the season, but playing half the season without their top scorer probably means Indiana will be fighting with the likes of Cleveland, Atlanta, and maybe Milwaukee or (gasp!) Toronto for the final couple playoff spots.
An adjusted guess at the top 8:
1. Miami
2. Boston
3. New York (it’s early, they’ll falter, I know)
4. Chicago
5. Brooklyn
6. Philadelphia (will improve once Bynum arrives)
7. Cleveland
8. Milwaukee
9. Indiana
10. Atlanta
11. Toronto
12. Orlando
13. Detroit
14. Charlotte
15. Washington

The Knicks will falter as soon as their age catches up to them which should be the middle of next week.

Clevelanders(?) still remember your Vick to Cleveland and Barner to Cleveland comments. You’re going to need to do better than 7.

That is very true and very unsettling.

I like Irving a lot.
Waiters not playing badly so far.

Also that era of Diane Sawyer INFINITELY more attractive than current Samantha Steele.

I can’t get into it because it looks like she’s trying to blow some heat out her ass.

Don’t forget to include Paulina Gretzky, Sage Steele, Natalie Portman, some actress, and Mrs. McCarron from the right rail in your selection process.

IF the Cavs get to the playoffs then that means Dion Waiters is going to be a future stud all-star. Kyrie’s offensive game is absurd already. I’ll be curious to see him on defense though. Last year even 2nd rate PGs were torching him for 30.
But they have no bench. CJ Miles is shooting like 20% and Luke Walton’s Carcass is like a key player for them at this point.
I like Waiters though. He’s like a JR Rider without all the arrests at this point.

Wait a minute, Charlie Villanueva is still with the Pistons? I thought they amnestied him.

Was at the Hawks opener last Friday and it was a bit depressing but picked up a nice road win at OKC. It will be a tough year but they’ll definitely make the playoffs.
