The Atlanta Falcons, the Latest 8-0 Team Thanks to the Schedule, Do Not Compare Favorably to Other 8-0 Teams
Last year, at this time, I took a look at the Green Bay Packers’ 8-0 start, and found that their historically bad defense (at least among elite teams) was an issue compared with other teams that started 8-0. Green Bay went on to still win 15 regular season games, but that defensive shortcoming came to pass in the Divisional Round against the Giants.
Atlanta is the fifteenth team to reach 8-0 at the midway point of a 16 game schedule. You may have noticed that it is happening far more frequently now. It only happened twice in the 1980′s. Then both San Francisco and New York did it in 1990, followed by the Redskins in 1991. After that, we had a long stretch where only the 1998 Broncos reached 8-0.
Since 2002, though we’ve seen nine different teams start a year 8-0. What changed? Well, the schedule format is a big facto. It’s a lot more uniform now, a lot cleaner and fairer within a division. Among the top teams, though, there can be a tendency to get a good draw. It’s more like having four different football conferences now, with only a few cross over games. Prior to 2002, teams really did play a first place or second place schedule, and thus played the good teams from the top of their own conference more, and didn’t play the fifth place teams as often.
I think that will show when we compare the fifteen 8-0 teams. I ranked each of the fifteen by their stats through the first 8 games in the following: points for, points allowed, point differential, yardage margin, turnover margin, yards per offensive play, yards allowed per defensive play, and strength of schedule (as measured at the halfway point by opponent records).
Here they are, sorted from lowest combined rankings to highest combined rankings across all eight categories. Atlanta comes in dead last.
- New England, 2007 (30): Lost Super Bowl
- Miami, 1984 (41.5): Lost Super Bowl
- Washington, 1991 (47.5): Won Super Bowl
- New Orleans, 2009 (55): Won Super Bowl
- Indianapolis, 2005 (59.5): Lost Divisional Round
- Chicago, 1985 (61): Won Super Bowl
- Indianapolis, 2009 (61): Lost Super Bowl
- New York Giants, 1990 (63.5): Won Super Bowl
- Denver, 1998 (64.5): Won Super Bowl
- Green Bay, 2011 (71): Lost Divisional Round
- Kansas City, 2003 (71): Lost Divisional Round
- Indianapolis, 2006 (77.5): Won Super Bowl
- Tennessee, 2008 (78): Lost Divisional Round
- San Francisco, 1990 (86): Lost Championship Game
- Atlanta, 2012 (93): ???????
Among the top nine on this list, eight of them reached a Super Bowl, with four of them winning.
Among the others in the bottom six, only the 2006 Colts reached and won a Super Bowl. That Colts team had a low point differential and yards per play relative to other undefeateds, but they did differ from the rest at the bottom of the list in one key category.
Strength of schedule.
That 2006 Colts team had the hardest schedule of anyone on this list. The others at the bottom of the list all ranked in the bottom half of strength of schedule, playing easier than average slates while still not putting up as dominant of numbers.
Atlanta is tied for the second easiest schedule on this list, with Denver at home as the only game against a team in playoff position right now. The only category they rank above average is turnover margin, but that’s not a great thing. The bottom of this list ranked higher in that category than the top, the only category where that was the case.
From point differential to points scored to yards per play on offense and defense to schedule, this Atlanta team is in the bottom five of each category.
These imbalanced schedules have produced five teams in the bottom of that list since 2002, while only 1990 San Francisco appears from pre-2002. In other words, going 8-0 was a lot harder and more meaningful in predicting playoff success before the changes.

Craig James thinks the Falcons receivers are over-rated and knows there’s a spot for a “real tough kid that just came out of the closet” named Adam.

This is a good post. Most people seem to believe, myself included, that Atlanta is nothing special, but its nice to see it quantified a bit more.

On Sunday, I made the comment on the Twitters that the Falcons are like the Orioles of this year, getting it done by smoke and mirrors.
I must say, I’m pretty proud of myself.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Thats a lot of words to tell us Atlanta is a fraud. Which most of us already knew anyway.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
There you go!
November 6th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
I wanna chime in, but they waxed SD earlier this year. The Falcons are good, but not great.
OK.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
As an Orioles fan I strongly…agree?
November 6th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
Hope we win against the Saints and then lose at home against the Cardinals. That’ll stop all this “they’re not as good as their record shows” talk. While I agree with that assessment, the irrational fan in me still get agitated whenever I hear it.

Totally forgot about that 2008 Titans team. The roster on offense at PFR is such a hodgepodge of castoffs and flash in the pans. Justin Gage, Alge Crumpler, Kerry Collins, LenDale White and Chris Johnson. That defensive line was pretty nasty though.
A botched opening game against the Bears and a 53 yard Josh Scobee field goal are the reason the Titans won the South instead of the Colts.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
At 8-0 they might not even be a top 4 team in their own conference. On a neutral field does anyone have them beating Chicago, San Francisco, NYG, or Green Bay?
November 6th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Falcons are just as good as all the other good teams in NFC. We have just as much a chance to go to the super bowl as Packers, Bears, or Giants do. I would take Falcons at home over any of those teams. I understand past playoff games don’t support my argument, but I really believe this year will be different.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
The Falcons, even at home, would be likely underdogs to every team in the NFC playoffs to date except the Seahawks.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
seriously? You really think they’re 5th best team in their conference?
November 6th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Kerry Collins is neither of those. Washed up drunk maybe.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
true fact: they’ll never play those teams on a neutral field.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
It’s hard to tell, I’d like to see them play one of those teams first before passing judgement. Those 4 have already played each other a bunch.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
remember those lisk posts that drafted teams from different years, or something?
/hurt my head
i think this falcons team has some nuts, main evidence is record outside the dome. my memory says you used to be able to pencil in a loss when they flew. the win at philly got me believing even though philly has shown to be lame
November 6th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Agreed that bowl season is just as good as playoffs.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Holy copy paste fail:
It’s hard to tell, I’d like to see them play one of those teams first before passing judgement. Those 4 have already played each other a bunch.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
That is true. Would you say Atlanta’s home field advantage is a big one? They’re definitely well suited for that dome.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
I’d say, “Oh? so you think it’s okay that you only have to finish .500 to make the postseason?”
then I realized that will probably happen in the AFC this year.
at least they won’t play the game on a Tuesday night in Shreveport, LA, though.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
I mean, if you guys are using past playoff failure as evidence of how fraudy Atlanta is, there’s nothing I can say to counter that. But it’s not last year. It’s this year. Packers and Bears have scraped wins against inferior opponents at home. 49ers got fucking Alex Smith throwing the ball. I’ll take our chances against any of those teams. Especially at home*
*Yeah, I realize half of the stadium will be cheering for them
November 6th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
agreed the falcons are frauds.

Der Kaiser:Atlanta Falcons::Breesus:New Orleans Saints
November 6th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
yea…seems to work for the giants.
and it’s not like .500 teams are playing in bowls that matter, but whatevs.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Yeah – I’m a Falcons fan, so I’m a bit biased.
But I’m treading lightly on this whole undefeated thing. Their division is poo and they got the AFC West, so I’m not sure we’ve really learned anything yet this year.
Assante Samuel is a nice addition. And the safeties are aggressive – which is good, but susceptible to getting burned.
I do believe the secondary will get exposed by a quick strike offense.
The Cowboys shredded them in the no-huddle. I expect to see more of that that and quicker snaps out of the huddle on a regular basis b/c of the way Nolan runs the defense jumping around pre-snap.
I love the way Matt Ryan is playing – especially no-huddle. Even with Julio Jones looking as good as he is, I still think they gave up way too much – in exchange for additional/better defensive players. Quizz gives a new dimension on offense that they didn’t really have last year.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
I won’t believe in the Falcons until they beat someone in the playoffs. That may not be fair but their history of futility is hard to overcome.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
full disclaimer: I have no interest in starting a “bowl system vs. playoffs” debate.
it’s not a big one, but it would probably at least help against SF or Chicago. however, playing in the Dome would probably hurt them against Green Bay, and the Giants seem to play better on the road either way.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
squawkbox, the new coordinators on both sides of the ball has had a great amount of impact. Take something as simple as the amount of screen passes we are now running. We didn’t utilize at all last few years.
If we lose, it’s going to be because of the defense. Mike Nolan has done a good job, but mediocre secondary and a average at best pass rush is not a good combo. Brent Grimes loss was a huge deal.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
The Dirty Turds are fraudier than Notre Dame and will likewise be exposed in due time.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Falcons are probably the 4th or 5th best team in the NFC.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
If Seattle upset the Packers, and then the Falcons best Russell Wilson at home, will you really believe them? Is that a “big” enough win for you? Something tells me that it’s not.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
To describe what Alex Smallhands does as “throwing the ball” is, I believe, engaging in hyperbole.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
8-0 means 8-0. pretty fucking good.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
Give me Ryan-Roddy-Julio-Tony at home. I’ll take it.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
10-0 is where it’s at.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
As long as first loss doesn’t come against the Saints, I’ll be fine.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
but mediocre secondary and a average at best pass rush
This is true. I think the Falcons match up well with NY, Seattle and Chicago but not GB.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
Yeah, GB scares me. Still get horrible flashbacks from playoff loss couple years back. Bring on Chicago and Jay Cutler.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
If they do lose to the Saints, here’s hoping the score is 62-7.
/ Neutral observer’d
November 6th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
Falcons aren’t the least bit impressive.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
WANT.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
As a Matt Ryan owner, I’d be more cool with 62-55. I will say this about the Falcons, Ryan in the 6th round is proving to be a steal.

November 6th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
I think you played #9 on there.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
I have it on good authority that Atlanta is currently the best 8-0 team in the league.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
i am very concerned about the Giants offense right about now.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
This is acceptable.
November 6th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Gee, yet ANOTHER article calling the Falcons a fraud. How original.
November 6th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
I do love that instead of just enjoying that their team is 8-0, Falcons fans have to instead defend against all the non-Falcons fans who don’t think they deserve it. Oh did I say love? I mean hate. I hate that. It totally sucks.
Here’s my advice to you, Falcons fans. Don’t stress about all this stuff. Because what if everyone here is right and the Falcons are really only the 4th or 5th best team in the NFC? That means the only thing you have to look forward to is lots and lots of emotional pain once the playoffs arrive. So you minus well enjoy it now while it lasts. /high fives Sportsgal.

I’m Happy and I support that message.
