Michael Vick: Who Will Want an Inaccurate, Injury-Prone, 33-year-old QB in Free Agency?
Michael Vick is having perhaps the most challenging year of his career. Playing behind a leaky offensive line, and with his speed and Houdini-like escapability diminishing, Vick is a sitting duck in the pocket, and when the defenders converge on him, turnovers usually happen.
He’s not accurate enough to sit back and pick apart defenses; hell, enough talking heads say Vick is having trouble recognizing defenses at the line of scrimmage.
So what will happen with Vick in the offseason? By May 2013, he’ll have received nearly all of his guaranteed money, and if the Eagles cut him in the offseason, they obviously won’t have to pay him $16 million next year.
Vick will want to start. The following teams will either be in the market for a QB this offseason, or at least thinking about acquiring a veteran starter for a year or two as a bridge to a younger QB. And remember – the 2013 draft QB class has had a rough few weeks, with nobody looking like a No. 1 pick.
SERIOUS THOUGHT
Kansas City Chiefs – Matt Cassel is awful. The Chiefs will have a Top 5 pick. Do you feel that certain about Barkley or Geno Smith right now? The offensive line isn’t terrible. He’ll have Philly-type weapons on Charles/Bowe. Would the new GM – Pioli is gone, right? – make this bold a move?
Minnesota Vikings – Three weeks ago, this would have been absurd. But Ponder is struggling. The Vikings have great weapons in Peterson and Harvin. The defense – save the Tampa debacle – is on the uptick. Then there’s the turf factor, where Vick has had success. Why not?
CHANGE IS COMING, SO WHO REALLY KNOWS
Cleveland Browns – A new coach is on the way. Weeden was just drafted last year. Between the “Dog Pound” and the cold weather, this seems highly unlikely.
WARM WEATHER, WHY NOT?
Arizona Cardinals – John Skelton is abysmal. Kevin Kolb, who looked OK in the regular season, couldn’t beat out Skelton in the preseason. What if Fitzgerald pushes for Vick? The putrid offensive line might scare him, though.
VERY UNLIKELY, BUT THEIR QBs SUCK, SO AT LEAST GIVE IT A MODICUM OF THOUGHT
Buffalo Bills -Â Ryan Fitzpatrick? Come on now.
Tennessee Titans – Jake Locker was their No. 1 pick in 2011, but he’s hurt. Let’s see what Locker does when he returns.
Jacksonville Jaguars – Can’t imagine Vick wanting to go here and end his career in an empty stadium, but yes, he’d beat out Blaine Gabbert for the job.
New York Jets – Mark Sanchez has one year left on his deal. The annoying Jets’ owner loves publicity. I don’t like it, but you can’t tell me they won’t consider it.

Broncos?
After Manning gets that one hit that knocks him out for his career.

Chiefs fans will drive down to Dallas and burn down Clark Hunt’s mansion if they sign Vick over drafting a QB.

Who would want white Michael Vick, though?
This TBLAD?
November 6th, 2012 at 6:30 PM
Is Quincy Carter coming back to the league?
November 6th, 2012 at 6:33 PM
I can’t blame you, but you obviously don’t watch the Browns. Weeden isn’t terrible. They already have their bridge for the next few years.

Question for the masses for the evening:
Can we make this a completely NON-political thread for the hopes and sakes of all that are trying to get the fuck away from it for even a few minutes of sanity this evening?
Is this too much to ask?
November 6th, 2012 at 6:39 PM
Soused getting an early election start on the Twitters. lol
November 6th, 2012 at 6:42 PM
Funny how a shitty OL can make even a decent QB and great skill position talent look like hell.
Arizona seems to be more serious than any of the other teams on this list. Buffalo would be a possibility, likely over the dead bodies of many of the Bills Mafia. But, those are two teams that could possibly playoff with a QB at the helm.
Yes, Vick is a QB, compared to Fitz, Skelton, or Kolb.
Cleveland is a no, period. Can we stop the foolishness?
November 6th, 2012 at 6:43 PM
A little early. Check back in a few.
We can, but you gotta have a story to share. Got a sex barn at home? How about cassettes in a backpack? How about a customer service story, working with folk who speak English as a second language?
November 6th, 2012 at 6:43 PM
Joe Webb is a poor mans Vick at a much cheaper cost.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:43 PM
Cool with me. Election probably won’t be decided tonight anyways.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:46 PM
Really poor maybe on the verge of bankruptcy
November 6th, 2012 at 6:46 PM
I just looked at an EV map. Obama can lose OH, VA and FL and still win as long as he gets the rest of the states currently in his favor (MN, WI, CO NV, and IA). Cray.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:47 PM
Just kidding, if there’s another thread I won’t talk politics in here.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:51 PM
There’s gonna be some epic meltdowns tonight
November 6th, 2012 at 6:52 PM
Joe Webb > Tim Tebow
November 6th, 2012 at 6:53 PM
I haven’t been here in a while so tonight should be the perfect night to stick around
November 6th, 2012 at 6:54 PM
I swear to God, if the Chiefs go retread again instead of doing whatever necessary to get Barkley, or at least Smith/Wilson, I will be done with them for a while. I don’t care if you have questions about Barkley…the new rookie scale, along with the fact that teams can still get out of contracts, makes it a no-brainer. Especially when you consider young QB’s are having more immediate NFL success than ever.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:54 PM
Agreed. Just not sure on which side.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:55 PM
Because he’s 33, inaccurate and injury prone. I’m surprised you didn’t go with the Randall Cunningham comparison. It was RIGHT THERE.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:56 PM
Side note: I’ve been really bored with this football season. The wife even mentioned that I don’t watch a lot of it anymore. Does anyone else feel the same or am I just lame? Every Texans win is big except for a few garbage points and their 1 loss was big…
November 6th, 2012 at 6:58 PM
I’ve started to get kinda bored or rather pretty much just overloaded with football this year with Saturday and Sundays.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:59 PM
Reminds me of the Bears before Cutler… Always getting by or flat out being awful with a shitty QB
November 6th, 2012 at 7:03 PM
I’m not going to read the post, but I saw Jake Locker’s name. From what I saw, Locker could be decent. He was far better than I expected, and I’d take him over most of those names.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:07 PM
I think on the last Thursday Night game they said that the last time the Chiefs won a game with a homegrown QB was back in 1988 with Todd Blackledge. that’s insane.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:07 PM
I am as well. Sprung for Sunday Ticket, but I find myself turning off/erasing Chargers’ games before finishing the 4th quarter. If my team was playing games down to the wire each week, I’d enjoy it more win or lose.
Watching San Diego give away games & watching Rivers throw erratically, makes me wish for baseball.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:08 PM
Ezra Klein just made a good point on Twitter: the fact that the polls in VA are too close to call is evidence that the polling has been dead on, not biased against Romney.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:09 PM
I swear to God, if the Chiefs go retread again instead of doing whatever necessary to get Barkley, or at least Smith/Wilson, I will be done with them for a while.
But will you go burn down Clark Hunt’s mansion?
November 6th, 2012 at 7:10 PM
I have been defending Vick this season because of the constant pressure he’s been facing but there was a good tweet from Jeremiah Trotter last night saying that Vick knows the blitz is coming every time, but he had no idea where to go with the football before the snap. Pretty damming indictment from a former teammate.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:11 PM
I want to see someone burn down an nfl owners mansion. Left Eye already checked the player box.

If Virginia breaks for Obama…
November 6th, 2012 at 7:15 PM
The matchups the past few weeks havent been the greatest. This week too. What’s the best early game, Denver at Carolina? Giants at Cincy? Yuck.
Things will pick up a bit in Week 11. Steelers/Ravens and Pats/Colts will both be a lot of fun.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:16 PM
That Todd Blackledge was an NFL starter? That IS insane.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:18 PM
Watching two shitty teams on Thursday nights with a combined three players, two of whom will leave the game with injury, doesn’t really excite me.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:18 PM
Ya know, after re-looking at the question, why would anyone want Vick next year?
His situation reminds me a bit of Allen Iverson. While in their respective primes, they filled stadiums.
Now, who wants to revamp their long-term plan to accommodate a guy who is such a unique player, who is on the back side of his prime? Is he really gonna make your specific team better next year?
November 6th, 2012 at 7:18 PM
No chance buffalo goes after vick
November 6th, 2012 at 7:21 PM
I’d rather they draft a QB
November 6th, 2012 at 7:23 PM
I love that Buffalo game Fitzpatrick a year to be a starter, didn’t panic, tried to build around him etc… they didn’t have to give him that contract though, and it may be time to move on.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:25 PM
At least AP still has the Sabres….
November 6th, 2012 at 7:26 PM
You could put the two best teams in the league on Thursday and the game would still suck out loud.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:26 PM
Oof. Way to hit a man when he’s down.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:28 PM
I’ve come for the gang bang.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:31 PM
There are 3 kinds of teams in terms of QB: Group A.) Teams that know they have their guy, Group B) teams that have a young guy who might become their guy, and Group C teams that need a QB.
Group A: DEN, NE, NO, GB, PIT, NYG, HOU, ATL, CHI
Group B: IND, WAS, CAR, MIA, CIN, DET, TB, STL, SEA, JAX
November 6th, 2012 at 7:32 PM
I’ve had Michigan season tickets for almost 20 years. This Saturday will be only the 2nd game I’ve been to this season.
//Probably has more to do with them having a really shitty home schedule this year than anything.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:32 PM
Chiefs fans will drive down to Dallas and burn down Clark Hunt’s mansion if they sign Vick over drafting a QB.
You could probably sell a lot of tickets to that event.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:33 PM
Despite my constant bad mouthing of the hillbilly. He’s the Lions franchise QB already. And when the Lions pay him the largest contract in NFL history I’m gonna cry.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:43 PM
The window on a few of those QBs is closing quickly. Brady/Manning are 35/36. As hard as it is to imagine the Patriots without Brady again, that time could be fairly soon.
Roethlisberger is only 30, but I could see him going downhill fast when it comes (because of injuries). Same with Schaub. Brees is 33.
Brady and Manning are 35/36 though. The end is coming for those teams, and I hope we don’t go through another era of shitty QBs (re: the 1995-6 drafts where Tony Banks was the best QB taken…)
November 6th, 2012 at 7:47 PM
No but I might give his privacy hedge the savaging of it’s life.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:51 PM
Not sure I agree with the groupings. If Luck, RG3, Cam and Stafford are healthy, they are absolutely starting every game the next 1-2 years minimum. They are locked in.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:52 PM
The Browns are in Group B. Weeden is solid. He looks like a rookie sometimes. He also looks like he has the ability to throw for 4000 with 30 TD’s sometime soon.
/Weeden age crack in less than 6 posts…
November 6th, 2012 at 7:58 PM
If Luck, RG3, Cam and Stafford are healthy, they are absolutely starting every game the next 1-2 years minimum. They are locked in.
Yeah, Luck, RGIII, Cam and Stafford are probably in group A. I was just thinking group A would be “these guys are ready to win a Super Bowl, but I don’t the problem with the Colts, Skins, Panthers or Lions is their QB play. Lions fans may disagree though.
Weeden is a little old to be a “young guy who might become a franchise QB” and he’s certainly not established as “the man” so I guess he’s in the Rivers, Smith, Romo, Flacco section of group C where maybe you can win this guy if you have a great running game/defense/coach combo with him.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:12 PM
I don’t like the groupings. My thoughts:
Group A – Franchise QB’s. There are 6 of them… with another couple close. NYG, DEN, PIT, NE, NO, GB
Group B – Potential Franchise QB’s. Some are young and will likely move up. Others are older and close to franchise. HOU, ATL, CHI, IND, WAS, CAR(?)
Group C – Older Serviceable QB’s. You know what you’ve got, for good or bad. DAL, BAL, SD, SF, OAK (E?), PHI
Group D – Younger Non-Franchise, but Potentially Solid QB’s. CLE, MIA, SEA, DET (B?), TB, SEA, STL, CIN, MIN (E?), TEN (E?)
Group E – HELP! ARI, BUF, NYJ, JAX (D?),

Watching NBATV studio tonight. Chris Webber is fantastic in studio. The hair could use a little work, but he gives great, great insight. Relaxed, some humor, and really intelligent analysis.
