Cam Newton Superman Touchdown Celebration Gets High School QB Ejected From Playoff Game
Jalan McClendon, a highly-recruited high school QB, was ejected from a playoff game for scoring a touchdown and then celebrating, Cam Newton-style. The Charlotte Observer has details:
NCHSAA supervisor of officials Mark Dreibelbis told the Observer Monday that officials did not eject McClendon for taunting, which would have triggered a two-game suspension. Dreibelbis said McClendon was disqualified for an unsportsmanlike act, which just meant he had to sit out the remainder of the game.
McClendon, a 6-foot-4 junior, has “scholarship offers from North Carolina, Duke and Wake Forest” and South Carolina and Tennessee are interested as well. It seems just slightly silly to eject a kid for that celebration. Yes, simply handing the ball to an official is the best way to go. But what’s wrong with showing emotion? A 17-year-old, in the midst of a big playoff upset (at least the paper called it an upset) can’t celebrate?
Cam Newton, to my knowledge, has never been flagged for it at the college or professional level. [Observer via Jones via Littman]

I received a 15-yard unsportsmanlike for “Raising the Stanley Cup” as the ref put it.

I blame the NFL for this. Everyone else followed.

Some states eject if you spike the ball. These kids all know that.

Maybe it’s because I’m ancient, but I’ve never understood the “Look at me, look at me!” orgy of self-celebration. So those 10 other guys on your side of the ball had nothing to do with the play, correct?

yup. i know that michigan high school rules are pretty strict. can’t even unbuckle your chin strap if you have a TD.

It’s the best when a wide open receiver catches a ball after the defender falls down and walks into the end zone. He’s the man, though.

I saw a couple players spike a ball Saturday after a play on defense. No call. One was during the Notre Dame game. I thought that was a personal foul?

the fat guys on the line would take too long to catch up and organize a team celebration for the camera.

Cam Newton-style.
He moped?

NFL refs seem to be ignoring the spiking the ball in the field of play rule

asked for suggestions.
November 6th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
I thought that was an OK celebration

after a TD only. supposed to be a 5-yard delay of game penalty, otherwise.

His coach (emphasis mine):
You could argue the rule is harsh, but it seemed like the refs were following already in place protocol.

Tell that to the Hogs!

I was gonna say, this guy probably has NFL potential, but when they mentioned 2 SEC schools, I reconsidered. Unless of course those SEC schools play him at any other position.

It’s a lame celebration. Period.

I like a good, creative TD celebration. Never liked this one, though. Always felt a little weird last year, watching Newton grinning after scoring but his team later ended up losing.
I really like celebrations that include teammates (and yeah, I know about the penalty for canned/non-spontaneous celebrations).

smells like a big bet was placed on the game

My kid has threatened to do the BJ Raji TD dance next season, so he demonstrated. Hilarious.
But I told him I’d kick his ass if he did it.

Cleveland transportation authority were cagey enough to fire the uppercut-delivering bus driver today.
“The employee handbook says an employee can be discharged if he uses overt force, strikes … a member of the public,” she said. “We understand he feels that his actions were in self-defense, but we disagree…”

West Meck doin work, they were one of the whipping boys when I was in high school, of course so were my boys at South Meck, although we were supposed to have the Leak brothers on our team. But then again Antawan Jameson was supposed to play for us as well.

Any of you ever hang around somebody that refs high school football?
Yeah, those guys are itching to throw flags, make ejections, etc.
November 6th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
I used to like the old Redskins celebration with the leaping high five.

Open to broad interpretation?
Next time, make sure they’re dead when you complete your defense of self so they can’t argue after the fact.
/yeah, yeah I know… cameras, witnesses, etc.

The Superman celebration is just the worst

I never understood why thy took celebrations out of high school and college football. I could understand if the game was over an they were up by a lot of points but in a playoff game it was probably close. It’s a cool thing to do after you score I saw Dwayne wade do it in a game, and just this week I saw Johnny Manzal do it, people like to do it. The rule of no celebration needs to be changed and if they want to keep the rule it shouldn’t cut out end zone celebrations

Had a kid on my Pop Warner team do the Cam move after a basic tackle – sat him immediately.
