Mike Shanahan Sounds Like He’s Given Up Hope on Making the Playoffs with 7 Games Left
Mike Shanahan, the overrated Redskins coach, met the media after Washington lost at home to Carolina, 21-13, and sounded like a guy who was throwing in the towel on the season. Washington is 3-6 and in the cellar in the NFC East.
“Now you’re playing to see who obviously is going to be on your football team for years to come. Now we get a chance to evaluate players and see where we’re at. Obviously, we’re not out of it statistically, but now we find out what type of character we’ve got and how guys keep on fighting through the rest of the season.”
The Redskins have lost three in a row, but fortunately have a bye next weekend. After that? Yikes:
vs. Philadelphia
at Dallas
vs. the Giants
vs. the Ravens.
Could easily be 0-4 or 1-3, which would drop the Redskins into 3-10/4-9 territory heading into late December.
At what point does Shanahan begin to worry about job security? Little Danny Snyder loves Shanahan, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter does too, but with Sean Payton on the market, and Bill Cowher forever looming as an option … eh, maybe Shanahan will just fire his son the offensive coordinator.
Or perhaps he’ll remind everyone about the injuries on defense and to Fred Davis and Pierre Garcon and the long-suffering fanbase (one playoff win since 2000; two playoff wins since 1993) will give him a pass. [Wash Post]

Redskin nation Wales? I could have sworn it was more of an Ireland I was hearing
November 5th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
The Redskins aren’t very good but that’s not a reason for them to go 0-4 or 1-3 against that murderer’s row. They could just as easily go 3-1 or 4-0.
November 5th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
J-Mac, it’s Cardiff, not Cundiff. Understandable mistake.
November 5th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
That’s how far I made it. To drop irrelevant opinion like that into what should be an introductory paragraph insults my intelligence. I’ll pass.

Reminds me of when Rex Ryan gave up on his season 1 or 2 years ago before it had to be pointed out to him his team was not yet mathematically eliminated

Stay outta the electric beach Shanny. Looking quite like the shriveled nut sack these days.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
Shanahan’s scheme keeps jeopardizing RGIII’s health, Redskin nation Balls.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
Jason, would you take Rex Ryan over Shanny?
Both specialized on one side of the ball. Both seem to have their reputations as gurus inflated by some HoF talents. Both seem to underachieve when expectations are put on them. Both seem to misfire on personnel decisions.
Of course, Shanahan has actually won Superbowls. At least Rex has won

Redskins over 6.5 on the season not looking to good. Morgan was terrible at WR, maybe [Stupid Name] Patterson can fall to the second round or the can someone acquire an entire offensive line.
If you are a Rams fan you are sitting pretty in 2013 Draft with potentially two top ten picks.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Thats being kind. Also, I think Arthur Blank is doing the Shanny self-tanner after seeing him last night.

“Overrated” is the most overused and misapplied term in sports “analysis” today. The author here doesn’t mean Shanahan is overrated, he means he doesn’t think Shanahan is a good coach. But that position is more difficult to defend, so the overrated tag gets applied.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
“And it keeps getting funnier, every time I see it!”
November 5th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
See that is how I feel about “genius” NFL coaches in general. It’s all about the talent of the players they have.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Did you see the first part of that statment? The part where the Redskins “aren’t very good”? That’s exactly why they’ll go 0-4 or 1-3 in the next five weeks. Oh yeah; the fact they have Shakes the Clown as offensive coordinator isn’t helping either.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
Read an interesting note from one of the Steeler beat writers yesterday about Cowher, and how everyone thought he would be back into coaching quickly. Apparently he’s got a place in NYC and is putting to a younger lady now a days. Maybe he really does like his TV gig.

Shanahan with Kubiak as OC: 114-62
Shanahan w/o Kubiak as OC: 46-63

Vegas is going to go to the cleaners tonight after the Saints push the Eagles shit in and end Andy Reid’s Eagles career.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Unless I added it wrong in my head. But you get the point.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Apparently he’s got a place in NYC and is putting to a younger lady now a days.
Are you sure it’s him and not Eliot Spitzer?
November 5th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
We can just add “geography” to the list of things Detective JMac is oblivious to.
/Wonder how he feels about that lefty QB, Matt Sanchez?
November 5th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
That and the fact that Cowher IS overrated. Don’t know any Steeler fans who were sad to see him go.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
How about a coaching record five games over .500 since the Elway years? Does that help make the case? Anyone who thinks Shanahan is anything other than mediocre is, in fact, overrating him.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
The part where the Redskins “aren’t very good”? That’s exactly why they’ll go 0-4 or 1-3 in the next five weeks.
You’re missing the implied “those 4 teams aren’t very good either, except for the Giants who are still beatable.”
November 5th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
i said, it can’t be as much fun as when other people do it for you
There is no way in hell I would do that to myself even if I could.

“I could keep this cushy TV gig, or coach in a high-spotlight situation for one of the worst owners in sports. Tough choice.”
November 5th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
Which franchise will win the SB first, Dallas or Washington?
/no, you can’t say neither.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
i still haven’t seen anyone say that payton would be a great coach without brees. i see people saying it’s silly to even ask, but not explain why it’s a silly question
for the record, all i’ve been doing is asking if anyone thought he was lucky to have brees, not judging him as a coach
i thought is was a decent discussion starter, but it has not been
is it Xs and Os? a great motivator? in-game coach? and how can it be properly said without him coaching w/o brees?
November 5th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
Mike Tomlin is awesome.

no darren sproles, beat up graham, and the worlds worst defense? i dont think the eagles are good, but i will be betting on them to win tonight.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Shanahan with Kubiak as OC: 114-62
Shanahan w/o Kubiak as OC: 46-63
what was the talent for with kubiak and w/o?
November 5th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Same thing could be asked about Shanny. With no Steve Young (as coordinator) or John elway (as HC), where is he in the coaching patheon? Sure as shit his kid wouldn’t be an NFL coordinator now.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
Draw your own conclusions: Shanahan was 67-45 with Kubiak and without Elway.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
I agree with all of this. I liked Cowher, but he was the Marty Schottenheimer of his era who happened to get an elite QB to help him win his SB. That said, he is a better coach then half of the guys right now.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:29 PM

Shanahan was 67-45 with Kubiak and without Elway.
cool
November 5th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
Eagles defense is seriously overrated. Nnamdi is done, no Nate Allen, the front 4 isn’t generating pressure, and Brees has historically taken the Eagles to the woodshed. Plus the whole Vick fumble & interception issue and not giving the ball enough to McCoy.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
Tonight’s lines are kinda weird: Phi +3 but it pays -115 while the money line is only +115. Tough to make money betting the Eagles.

ML Parlay, eagles and under.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
I’m sure some people exist who are stupid enough to think Shanahan is great, and thus overrate him… I still think it is a ridiculous placement, stylistically. Since when is it okay for a first sentence/paragraph to interject opinion, when it is neither defended nor the point of the post. Shouldn’t the first paragraph prepare you for the post, and not insult you with misdirection? It would be like writing a title with “ex-Yankees testing positive for PEDs” when neither player tested positive with the Yankees and the team was really irrelevant to the story.
I like my titles and openings to prepare me for what comes next, and establish a thesis, if necessary. Is that really being picky, considering that some of the people here fashion themselves as professional writers, and probably even call themselves journalists in the mirror each night before bed?
November 5th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
It is unfortunate that the Saints defense is a borderline abomination, saved by the distracting incompetence of the Redskins defense.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
is it Xs and Os? a great motivator? in-game coach? and how can it be properly said without him coaching w/o brees?
He’s seemingly a very good in-game coach (eg, the onside kick in the Super Bowl) and he was a pretty good OC in Dallas with less than spectacular QB talent.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
I must admit that I agree with WWOS. That first sentence jumped out at me as well.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
Wasn’t Tomlin talked about as being on the hot seat at one point? I agree he’s a good coach, but I thought there was some talk about being unhappy with him in Pittsburgh, when he had a rough start a few years back. Was that not Steeler fans, just media speculation?
November 5th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
The story about that kid falling into the painted dog exhibit at the zoo and getting mauled has officially fucked me up for the remainder of the evening

i thought a few things were well established:
1. you are a chemist
2. this is a blog,
3. not journalism, 99% of the time
4. as such, opinions anywhere in the post is assumed and/or expected
the bradshaw post is as bad as it gets, taking things out of context, especially with an implied accusation of racism, but here we are and will continue to be
November 5th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
WWoS: Only steeler fans who don’t like Tomlin are the racists ones.
He is by no means infallible (the fake FG was a terrible play call), but all in all he a really good coach.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
(eg, the onside kick in the Super Bowl)
because it worked?
November 5th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
And he was never in the hot seat with the Rooney’s, which is a crazy notion for a coach who has been to 2 super bowls (with 1 win) in his 1st 5 seasons.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:40 PM

November 5th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Didn’t know EB Shrunk read the site. Good to know!
November 5th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
because it worked?
No, because it was based on what he and his staff had seen from the Colts on kickoffs in the first half. I probably wouldn’t remember it if it hadn’t worked but it was a smart call.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
You’re missing the implied “those 4 teams aren’t very good either, except for the Giants who are still beatable.”
I admire your pluck, Starkweather, but as a Redskins fan of 40 years (I suspect you’re a DC homer as well, based on the Generals avatar), we’ve heard this refrain from the abused fanbase for far too long. (He’s not a violent man; he didn’t MEAN to push me down the stairs. I think things are getting better. Really.) Hoping your team isn’t quite as bad as some of the other lower-tier teams is no way to plan for the future. The Shanahans aren’t good for the ‘Skins. Time to cut bait.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
I’m sure a vet like London Fletcher was thrilled to hear his coach talk about being in evaluation mode halfway through the season when they’re just a few games out of a playoff spot. He’s throwing his players under the bus.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Especially with that division up for grabs.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
(I suspect you’re a DC homer as well, based on the Generals avatar)
Federals, you sonuvabitch! You’re right about my DC homerism in general but I’m not a Redskins fan. I just somehow never was
November 5th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
well, for being everybody’s must-have coach, i’m not getting a whole lot of payton love
he made a ballsy call in the super bowl based on scouting of a special teams squad that would have been taken by surprise anyway, and….?
i am not enough of a student of the game to defend or attack, i’m simply wondering if anyone thinks he’s a good coach or decent qwith great luck to have brees
we will just not know until he no longer has brees, so maybe it’s pointless. someone said, well look how they;re doing this year without him, but has the D been this bad before, and what kind of administration has he built for it all to collapse w/o him?
good leaders prepare their staff to move on w/o a hitch. if his players are w/o heart because he’s gone, then they are weak
November 5th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
The Skins are going nowhere fast until RG Checkdown III learns to throw the ball farther than 7 yards past the line of scrimmage.
November 5th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Retarded comment. Blame the scheme not the player.

It’s worked pretty well for Dinkin’ Drew Brees.
November 5th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
That and the fact that Cowher IS overrated. Don’t know any Steeler fans who were sad to see him go.
but then I see Tomlin call that fake field goal and it causes me to wonder about his competence.
November 5th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
What a weird stand to take Mike.
RGIII has a higher YPA than Brady, Brees, Rodgers and Stafford among many others.
He is no Cam Newton, but he is doing really well despite losing his top 2 passing targets.
November 5th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
he said with sad realization
Whoa now, let’s not say untrue shit you can’t just take back.
November 5th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
And Sean Payton was a genius because a 50-50 (at best, given the surprise nature) play call worked in the Superbowl. I agree with it being a bad call, from what I’ve heard (have watched 1.5 quarters of NFL football in two weeks), but it’s a dangerous road to go down judging a coach based on the results and not the decision process.
November 5th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Perhaps a valid one, however. Sort by % Deep.

its a bad call if it succeeds as well. Redman was getting 5 yards a carry, the OL was dominating. if you wanted to try and run the ball and rely on the D if you got stopped, then line up and run, since you’ve been winning those battles. they were controlling the game, you don’t need a spark from a trick play succeeding.
November 5th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Looking at QB Air Yards, he seems middle of the pack. .1 ypa less than Rodgers and .2 ahead of Roethlisberger, neither of whom are though of as check down guys.
I still think it is a weird stance to take in regards to RGIII.
November 5th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
Couldn’t agree more.
November 5th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
Uh he’s eighth in YPA with 7.61.
