Sean Payton’s Contract Extension From Last Year Was Voided, Meaning He Could Be Free Agent After This Year
Sean Payton’s contract extension that he signed in September 2011 is voided by the league, according to Adam Schefter, putting his status for next season in a state of flux.
Here’s the crazy thing about the contract extension being voided. According to Schefter, the clause that was at issue was one that would have allowed Sean Payton to walk away if Mickey Loomis was suspended, fired, or otherwise left the Saints. The league felt that would set a bad precedent.
So now, the deal is off, and with Mickey Loomis suspended, Sean Payton can walk away and would get what he wanted in the first place.
Would Payton leave for a place like Dallas, where he has ties, and where the incumbent coach is a life-like substance that occasionally makes crazy decisions? You can bet the speculation will begin. I would say unlikely, but with so much drama about Sean Payton, and him having bargaining power despite his suspension, you never know.

That had to have been some poison pill language his agent put in there to make it seem he’d stay with the Saints but would never be approved. I think I can hear Jerr-ah cackling from up here.
