Winter Classic: NHL Cancels Red Wings vs. Maple Leafs Game at Michigan Stadium
The NHL, embroiled in an ongoing lockout with the Players’ Association, has cancelled the Winter Classic. The Jan. 1 game between the Red Wings and the Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium was expected to draw more than 100,000 fans and be quite the spectacle, presuming it was not 50 degrees and rainy.
Bettman insists a shortened season remains a possibility, though the more pertinent question at this point is whether anyone outside the league’s core pockets will notice.
Great news for Detroit as well. Now, all the city has to look forward to after the Tigers getting swept are the Pistons and the conclusions of mediocre Michigan, Michigan State and Lions’ seasons. At least Michigan fans won’t have to choose between hockey and watching an SEC team curb stomp them in the Outback bowl.

Fuck You Bettman!

I hate so many of the people that have caused this. Bunch of terrorists. I hope Mike Illitch drops dead before the Tigers win a WS. Bettman should be liquidated and Fehr set ablaze.

It is. I think if they don’t have something in place to start playing by Christmas, I think the season is toast.
Also, if they did get a CBA done in a timely fashion, what’s to stop the NHL from scheduling the “Winter Classic” on a date later in January or February? It’s not like the venue (The Big House) is going to be taken or anything (is it?).
/fuck you Gary Bettman
Not sure this matters really. Hockey fans don’t care what non-hockey fans think.

I dont get why they have to cancel this already, when they’ve only cancelled regular season games through November? No hope they can work out a deal in the next 2 months?

Hockey is hilarious

There has been surprisingly little outrage over this in my sample size of Ontario facebook friends and Toronto drinking buddies. Think everyone just saw it as a forgone conclusion? Hard to believe these rabid hockey fiends are over it.

God you are such a little kiss ass to Monk.

The Leafs suck ass and there’s plenty of other hockey available to watch I guess.

Have you ever noticed that grape flavored things don’t taste like a grape at all but we just accept it? Wonder why that is

Watermelon flavored candies are great but also don’t taste like watermelon

I think part of it is all the buildup/coordination associated with it. There are weeks of preparation at the site, as well as the entire 24/7 series with HBO that begins filming 5 to 6 weeks in advance. Also the schedule is completely shot, and there’s no guarantee Toronto/Detroit would even play given they are in different conferences if a reduced schedule is implemented.

The terrible ratings for the NHL lockout are comparable to a World Series game. If the powers that be in hockey don’t look out, their sport will be deader than baseball.

Meanwhile, Shea Weber is trying to figure out how to spend $26 million.

I thought they might cancel it a few weeks ago as a negotiating tactic. The players thought the league might cave so they didn’t have to cancel the Classic and wanted to use that as leverage.
Bettman pulled a Keysor Soze and shot his own family.

no one in hockey is smart enough to start an alternate league
November 2nd, 2012 at 1:38 PM
That was from @DownGoesBrown (I think?)
November 2nd, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Or stupid enough, because there already are several alternate leagues where tons of the players are playing right now.

The most interesting thing to me about this lockout is just how little people (me included) seem to care. And this is in Vancouver, with a competitive team that has a window that’s closing.
November 2nd, 2012 at 1:44 PM
I think most hockey fans saw losing the season as a foregone conclusion, as mentioned earlier.
November 2nd, 2012 at 1:45 PM
And hate both sides equally at this point.

Me too.

I have OHL season tickets, so I at least get to see the guys that are going to be affected by the lockout after this one.

My wife and I work/live in downtown Nashville. Was on the fence about buying some sort of small season ticket package to the Predators. No NHL option, so I decided to buy some cheap Vanderbilt bball tickets to take my son.
Over the whole league, this scenario has to play out. Cities with multiple teams/venues that are plucking away NHL fans. The Predators lost about $500 from our family. IMO, a team like Nashville doesn’t have the luxury of assuming fans will be back if they take a whole season off.
