Jana Kramer … this elephant can speak Korean … stunning image of Sandy taking away half a house … people in Brooklyn charging their cell phones … CMA awards winners … sad video of New Yorkers dumpster diving, allegedly for food thrown out by a restaurant … Jenny McCarthy turned 40, and here are 40 pictures of her … Andrea Peyser hates that celebrities partied on Halloween in New York with New York in ruins … fired: “we are all handcuffed by money-hungry corporate fucks who want to run newspapers as a business rather than an essential part to maintaining a free-flowing democracy” … definitely one of the saddest stories from Sandy … driver allegedly pulled a gun on another driver at a gas station in New York … inspiring marathon runner story …

November 2nd, 2012 at 8:43 AM
It’s crazy they are running that marathon.
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:45 AM
Philly, you think these numbers are accurate? Every month the previous months numbers are revised upwards. Is this indicative of conservative projections or poor data sets?

Hadn’t seen that before.
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:46 AM
I remember when he was a quarterback for the Michigan Panthers.
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:46 AM
Great mayor you have there in NYC. Lots of generators and food available for the marathon yet citizens in the areas Sandy destroyed need them. Travesty. Cancel the damn marathon.
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:46 AM
I’m actually shocked that every major program in the country doesn’t make their players sign one of these.
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:47 AM

November 2nd, 2012 at 8:47 AM
it is. fuck those people dedicating that money and those resources to the marathon. people need to pull their heads out of their asses.

More proof that newspaper commenters are some of the worst people in the world
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:48 AM
Wasn’t someone here writing about what a great 3rd party presidential candidate Bloomberg would be?
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:48 AM
Walking in last Friday to see that my opponent had Freeman and Martin while I played Minnesota’s D. Down 66 to -3 after one game. Lost.

Horse head man again? CJ
It was only posted on here four days ago. It was time.
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:51 AM
the revenue from running the marathon will never offset the bad press that has already resulted. effed up priorities
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:51 AM
Nyjer? Please.
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:51 AM
I’m down 64-0 and he still has Foster going against Buffalo’s sieve and the majority of my team is either hurt or on a bye (Welker, J. Nelson, Hernandez, S. Jackson, etc.)

oh hi.
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:54 AM
Football players are increasing in size, and have been for awhile
is this true? This has to be some sort of a misprint. On a related note, when I was a kid, my dad was gigantic. Now he’s just a regular sized guy. I wonder what happened to him.
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:54 AM
No! I want The veal scalopini, I want a good fettucini alfredo. I want a bottle of fettucine, a 1981.
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:55 AM
Yeah that’s a tough beat. I’ve been getting killed by a combination of bye week blues and terrible matchups (have 1044 points scored against me in eight weeks). Endlessly frustrating, that is.
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:55 AM

No mention of Miami’s win over Va Tech 30-12 J-Mac? I would think that after your post on Logan Thomas, it would be relevant to note how horrible he played.
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:59 AM
My grandfather was an all-state fullback in the late 40′s, and he weighed 165 lbs at the time. A fullback that small nowadays would die on the field.
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:59 AM
BLS will revise numbers since the employment #s are based upon surveying (which is usually very accurate (using 95% confidence levels), at least from what I remember from my Advanced Macro & Labor econ classes). However, sustained job growth, and even though the rate rose, it was due to people rejoining the workforce, which is acceptable. Once we start hitting 200k+ a month, then it’s really good, but we’re getting there.

Cool, Philly, thanks. I legitimately didn’t know why they’ve been revised upwards almost every month.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:03 AM
Guys are like machines today. Seriously, take a look at some of these guys and how they are built, strength and speed. Today’s Strong Safety would have been a Def lineman back in the day.
I laugh at these comparisons where this awesome team from the 60′s or 70′s would compete with today’s great. Please. The players today would knock these guys’ dicks in the dirt. Jim Brown??? It’s all relative. He was a great back for his time, but not compared to today. You look footage from games then, and guys are arm grabbing him and going high & bouncing off. RBs today are getting pounded and still churning and moving forward.

forgot. didn’t see much of it in the 2nd half after his poor pick
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:03 AM
That was frustrating to watch. I put a little money on VT -1 just to make it interesting. I figured they’d be able to go up and down the field on The U – I was correct, but then they shit all over themselves in the red zone.
I thing Beamer went to the Andy Reid clock management school for that display at the end of the first half.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:04 AM
when you started with “BLS” i thought you were talking Big Lead Sports.
Note: We just had our best month in site history in October. Shattered every previous stat. Props to the team.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:05 AM
Love the cherry picking of statistics.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:06 AM
Wait.. wont the revenue from the marathon help the area? Thus creating good press? I was kinda surprised to see such huge backlash.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:06 AM
It was the ratings posts. Keep it up.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:07 AM

Why wouldn’t those assholes open their doors when the woman was knocking on them? We had flooding and were all working together to make sure people on the ground floor would be safe. Makes me wonder about humanity.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:08 AM
Here’s more -
Black unemployment rose to 14.3%
Hourly wages dropped, indicating many of the new jobs are low paying
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:08 AM
It’s friday, don’t ruin the Roundup.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:08 AM
Aaaand the trifecta!
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:09 AM
so i was in DD this morning and heard these two window replacement workers talking about how obama hasn’t had to overcome anything in his life while romney knows what it’s like to build his own business from the ground up.
i had to snicker a little bit. politics aside, that’s just…we’re talkinga bout the same people, right?
it’ll be interesting to see the lower-income republicans reaction if romney wins and doesn’t deliver on his economic promises.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:10 AM
You’re welcome
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:10 AM

/Actually enjoy ratings posts when they have a point.
//Yesterday’s had no point.

November 2nd, 2012 at 9:11 AM
fuck the revenue, people need gasoline, generators, first responders and power way before fucking dipshit runners have people handing them cups of water as they complete a meaningless fucking race while the entire ny/NJ area sits in fucking cold houses without power for two fucking weeks, if they even have a home they can go back to.
and fuck anyone who justifies it by saying it provides inspiration.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:11 AM
Awful story about those two little boys being swept away.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:12 AM
We just had our best month in site history in October. Shattered every previous stat. Props to the team.
I demand a slide show of graphs and metrics. Include staff photos.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:12 AM
I suppose much the same way Democrats have reacted to Obama’s failure to deliver. Again, black unemployment is at 14.3%, yet 99% will vote for him.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:12 AM
And that’s with yours truly only batting .235 on the funny scale for October. In response I’ve put in some extra work in the cage, have been watching video of my delivery, and am tweaking my usage of adverbs and pronouns.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:13 AM
While true, what the hell was she doing out there driving?
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:13 AM
Wait.. wont the revenue from the marathon help the area? Thus creating good press? I was kinda surprised to see such huge backlash.
yes, but in order to police the marathon resources will have to be pulled away from helping out those who still are without power, etc. if you were stuck trying to find gas for a borrowed generator and scrounging for food for your kids while the city spent time and energy preparing instead for a marathon I think you’d be pretty pissed.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:14 AM
It was horrible to watch. Just God awful football. Tech should have had command of that game by halftime. Miami plays hard, but they are just not good. The ACCCG is going to be either Duke or Miami representing from the Coastal. What a joke.
And the clock management wasn’t all melty face’s fault, the ACC Refs had some derp with how they were winding the game clock.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:15 AM
The out-of-nowhere Schefter/Shanahan post was weird.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:15 AM
Well according to Romney they are part of the 47% that don’t want jobs anyways so that stat is looking good to them.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:15 AM
well yea…because at least he cares. romney’s already said he doesn’t give a flying fuck about em, so why in blue hell would they vote for him?
but for the blue collar guys, it seems that obama at least has their interests more in mind (seeing as he’s a communist and all) than bossman romney. they’re a rageful demographic, those blue collars.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:15 AM
so i was in DD this morning and heard these two window replacement workers talking about how obama hasn’t had to overcome anything in his life while romney knows what it’s like to build his own business from the ground up.
I swear I’ve seen front doors plywooded up at about every Dunkin Donuts area over the past few years. I think they are targets for drunks in early morning drunk donut runs.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:16 AM
to be fair, women shouldnt be driving in 70 and sunny, let alone during a hurricane.

Someone needs to tell Norma Rae here that newspapers have always been a business going back to Ben Franklin.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:16 AM
Of course, if Republicans had their way, blacks wouldn’t be able to vote at all. So there’s that.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:17 AM
I think you used the wrong r word.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:17 AM
It’s not so much a marathon, but a steeplechase this year
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:17 AM
well yea…because at least he cares. romney’s already said he doesn’t give a flying fuck about em, so why in blue hell would they vote for him?
i dont really care for romney and wont be voting for him, but this has been taken out of context. lets find a new narrative.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:18 AM
Says she got scared, who knows. It probably would have been safer if she just stayed home but I really cant say since I wasnt in her situation. Just sad.

Voted yesterday. Split LIB and GRN ticket.
I hope you get 5%, Gary Johnson. I did my part.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:19 AM
is there a main reason power is out for so many? Is it flooding, lack of technicians, damaged infrastruce to the power stations? Combo?
I know there are lots of places here in NE Ohio without power. And we were on the tail end of that storm impact. That storm damaged a great deal of the nation. I think some of it is that some resources cant be converged in any one area.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:19 AM
lets jsut change the topic entirely…
i think norv turner should be given an extension.
/ball’s in your court SROD
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:19 AM
Of course, if Republicans had their way, blacks wouldn’t be able to vote at all. So there’s that.
of course, if dems had their way, whites with money would have to throw it in the toilet in the name of equality.
see, bullshit works both ways.

November 2nd, 2012 at 9:21 AM
everything. damage to power stations, substations, utility poles split in half, 1.9million w/o power in NJ

I was just on here last night on my super cool new smart phone. You still have that ad that follows you down the page, that when you click the X to close it, just opens up again while you scroll.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:28 AM
I disagree wholeheartedly. The guy said what he believed when he thought no one was looking and got caught. I don’t know what other context there could possibly be.
Agree that the marathon should be cancelled. If I’m freezing in my busted home and I know the city is working day and night to prepare for an influx of runners in fucking short shorts, I’m grabbing a pitchfork.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:28 AM
is there a main reason power is out for so many? Is it flooding, lack of technicians, damaged infrastructure to the power stations? Combo?
Not getting political but saw a story this morning that Alabama utility crews were told to go home as they weren’t union outfits.
If that is really true, just disgraceful.

November 2nd, 2012 at 9:28 AM
did anyone see MSG group telling people they’re gonna have to take vacay days if they cant get inot work because of sandy?
I work in workforce management and spent a ton of time re-allocating staffing, overtime loads etc to reduce storm impact. That’s pretty poor by MSG.

i mean, i like it here, but im weird. the sports thing’s a pain, the weather blows and it’s not exactly the place to be for exciting nightlife but it definitely has it’s nice parts.
great restaurants, great when the weather’s nice, tons of green space, awesome orchestra and art museum, ample AMPLE golf…it works for me.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:29 AM
I disagree wholeheartedly. The guy said what he believed when he thought no one was looking and got caught. I don’t know what other context there could possibly be.

November 2nd, 2012 at 9:30 AM

cleveland is a great place to live. the cost of living is great.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:30 AM
I, too, read that marathoners could bow out of this year’s race and have their entrance fees carried over to next year.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:30 AM
And where did you hear this? Drudge? I saw utility crews driving in this morning from Illinois, Mississippi and South Carolina. Two of those are right to work states.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:31 AM
This was an awesome game. West is wide open. Spurs, Lakers, and OKC each have legitimate chance to win the conference. Denver isn’t far behind.
And Westbrook got badly beaten on that last play. He had his back toward Parker and decided to jump the non-existent passing lane.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:32 AM
great restaurants, great when the weather’s nice, tons of green space, awesome orchestra and art museum, ample AMPLE golf…it works for me.
i thought so. every city has something cool about it. every one of them.

So I missed the roundup, but I wanted to share why: our company created this vehicle a couple years ago and it looks like it may be on its way to a NJ county for election support
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:33 AM
Pro: They’re still on pace for an 8-8 finish (see last night)
Con: They’re not gonna overtake Denver this year.
Pro: Rivers AND Deion Sanders thinks Norv is a leader of men.
Con: Consider the source.
Pro: Norv is showing more passion and fire on the sideline this season.
Con: The team isn’t showing consistent passion and fire on the field this season.
My vote: saddle up & ride out, Norv. Like in those westerns of old. Move on to another city where you can be a top-flight OC. Holla at ya later!

If Romney had simply said “I know a large segment of the population won’t vote for me no matter what I do,” that would have been fine. And accurate.
But he said they wouldn’t vote for him because they’re lazy and dependent and don’t want to better themselves. The tone and characterization was appalling. Republicans have tried to spin what Romney said as just simply math, but his words say otherwise. To me, it was one of the most disgraceful things uttered by a serious presidential candidate.

I’ve got Don’t Have A Cow in the third, and Eat My Shorts in the fifth.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:33 AM
yea, that’s the way i see it. better to enjoy the nice than complain about the bad.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
Except Houston.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
That’s pretty awesome.
Is it like the RV from Stripes?
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
I, too, read that marathoners could bow out of this year’s race and have their entrance fees carried over to next year.
Which is bullshit.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
Would you move if given the opportunity to move to a nicer city for similar job that you are doing now? I can’t stand the fact that I’m surrounded by redneck republicans, but Atlanta certainly has it’s nicer quality. I don’t think I would move unless I’m offered a lot more money.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
That’s legitimately cool. I can see that being extremely useful in low-income neighborhoods or retirement communities (as well as storm ravaged areas).
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
i thought so. every city has something cool about it. every one of them.
and bad things too…
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:35 AM
lol.
also…lol @ farvalard.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:35 AM
You’re gonna have a magical life. Because no matter where you go, it will always be better than Tucson.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:35 AM
SRP from Arizona sent utility trucks too. Another right to work state.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:35 AM
Did you back up and finish her off?
She looked dead. Other homies (that’s what I call homeless people) were aiding her. Or stealing. It was hard to tell

“For runners who can’t get to New York, the deadline to withdraw from the [New York Marathon] race and guarantee a spot in next year’s event likely will be pushed back from Wednesday to Saturday. They would still have to pay the entry fee again next year under normal race policy. Wittenberg expects race week will look much the same to New Yorkers and competitors. Extra time is always built into planning, and 700 part-time workers and 8,000 volunteers ensure the course can be set up quickly. ‘We remain extremely confident we will have an amazing weekend,’ she said.”
AP, on Monday
GH: I am supposed to travel to NYC on Friday morning for Sunday’s marathon. If you are like me and have been watching the TV coverage of this storm, you have to wonder how in the heck 47K runners are going to be able to get to the starting line and then traverse that damage. Is the city really going to want to close 26 miles of streets to host a seven-hour marathon? The race officials are keeping the $265 entry fee of anyone who doesn’t show up for the race. But you can pay another $265 and be guaranteed a spot in next year’s marathon. It could be an interesting week for me.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:35 AM

November 2nd, 2012 at 9:36 AM
I’m now tempted to go to the local Dog Track tomorrow and throw down some coin on tomorrow’s races for your picks.

Please give Andy Reid another year. Please. I love watching Eagles fans suffer.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:36 AM

November 2nd, 2012 at 9:37 AM
Yes, all of the Eagles’ recent Super Bowl success has made us very spoiled.
/what?
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:37 AM
nj.com has the story
they’ve ended up in long island where they don’t give a shit about union status right now.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:37 AM
I can’t either. I’m already disgusted enough. I’ll go homicidal if Reid comes back. I hope the Saints smoke the Eagles this week and Reid is fired on Tuesday.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:38 AM
only way id move is if i underwent a complete career change. and then, yes, absolutely. id move to either austin, boulder, seattle or san diego in a cocaine heartbeat.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:38 AM
…and there you have it.
One for you, Spencer. New Browns’ ownership now in place. Holmgren gone. What else is going down in that organization between now and the end of the year?
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:38 AM
Cleveland’s okay if you’re forward-thinking about your employment. The transition from an industrial-manufacturing economy to a medical-corporate economy will still be impacting the idiots who failed to see the shift despite the obvious signs of the past 40 years. COLA, entertainment, cultural and education options are all very good. JAN-APR is rough though.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:39 AM
And where did you hear this? Drudge? I saw utility crews driving in this morning from Illinois, Mississippi and South Carolina. Two of those are right to work states.

it was designed for disaster relief, overflow voting relief, voter education drives, voter registration drives, and just about anything else where you may need to mobilize an activity. certainly not the first of its kind in that regard, but very much the first of its kind in the election industry. the area we are going is a disaster relief situation where the current polling site is unusable

Harrisburg has an IMAX. A legit IMAX. That’s literally it.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:40 AM
Hey!! It’s cheap to live here and the economy is relatively good.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:40 AM
What part of Atlanta do you live in? Just curious, I’m south of town in the ‘burbs.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:40 AM
nothing’ll happen until the end of the year, per haslam. i can’t see shurmur staying, but i think heckert gets retained. he’s done yeoman’s work the past three drafts.
if reid’s out there, i think they get him.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:40 AM
Thought I was doing the same thing when I moved to Philly a few years ago. But cost of living in the city ate into my increase and now I’m living in the suburbs. Don’t leave Atlanta. You’ll miss the 8 month short skirt season.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:41 AM
Good lord
shocker.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:42 AM
Well, whoever turned that crew away should be fired. Union/non-union shouldn’t matter when half the state of NJ doesn’t have power. My wife’s parents live in a senior community that hasn’t had power and don’t know when they’ll get it back. Worry about that, not about petty shit.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:42 AM
I want this to happen, but everyone in Philly tells me that Heckert and Banner hate each other with passion. I’m hopeful, but I’ve prepared myself to lose Heckert.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:43 AM
Except the weather sucks. I couldn’t do Houston. Or anywhere in Texas. Too hot for me.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:43 AM
Lawrenceville. Northern suburb. All my family and friends are here too. That’s the main reason I don’t think I’ll ever leave.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:43 AM
I’m going to do my part today, voting early rules.
‘Merica
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:45 AM
i heard their relationship was ok and it was more howie roseman’s ascension in the organization and the fact heckert didnt have total control over personnel.
im not sure the banner/heckert thing is really that big an issue. heckert’s all personnel, banner’s all salary cap and org administration. it worked before…and you gotta ask if there’s someone better out there. not sure there is.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:45 AM
I agree.
If it’ll make the union folks feel better, they can always set up outside the job site with their inflatable rat.
/drive past one of these things at least once a week
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:45 AM
Worry about the fact that there are still roads that are impassable because of downed trees. There are multiple lane closures on Route 206 (a major road) because of utility poles in the road.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:45 AM
Would be nice if PA or NJ decided to join this early voting fad.
/kicks rock, has to wait til Tuesday night

I’m considering a move to NC at the end of the year. Raleigh. The job opportunity is fantastic but its a major relocation for me and the wifey. Still on the fence and I need to have an answer by the middle of this month.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:46 AM
Same here, Fayetteville, mainly wife’s family and friends here, but other friends have moved to the metro area too since we have been here. Wont be leaving, plus free babysiting.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:46 AM
Would be fascinating to see a list compiled of all the write-in votes. I wonder if someone like Krusty the Clown gets one. And what if he gets two? These are the things I think about.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:46 AM
Agree 100 percent.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:47 AM
We live in neighborhoods of the same name.
We’re not too different, you and I.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:47 AM
If Banner stays in his box, he’ll be fine. It’s when he’s tried to color outside the lines and play personnel guy where he’s gotten into trouble.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:47 AM

so, 25 years behind Pittsburgh is what you’re saying.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:48 AM
This was one of the reasons my kid’s school was closed on Wednesday…..buses could not get to or through some neighborhoods because of downed trees.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:48 AM
I think I read once that Mickey Mouse is usually the highest write-in vote getter.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:48 AM
yea, but we’re not filled with appalachian cousinfuckers, so it’s all good.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Heckert would be a loss. He’s got his people in place, he’s got the cap room created. It’ll also be ironic when Phil Dawson is kicked out the door.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Great choice, I from NC,the triangle area is really nice, great for families. I moved from Raleigh to the Atlanta area, for job purposes and closer to wife’s fam. But love Raleigh (and Asheville, Beer City).
/sound like NC Chamber of Commerce guy
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:50 AM
I thought Mickey Mouse was the most popular write-in during the 90s, not sure if that’s changed.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:50 AM
You can buy a city block in east Cleveland for $50.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:51 AM

November 2nd, 2012 at 9:51 AM
I’m not taking the bait on that. No sir.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:52 AM
You can buy a city block in east Cleveland for $50.
East Cleveland (which is a small city to itself) is no joke. You will literally get the shit beaten out of you for no reason by being there.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:52 AM
I hear nothing but good things about the area. Lots of job opportunities, great home prices, safe.
The major downside is the lack of a support system. We’re trying to have a kid starting in January. Not only would we have no family or friends down there at first, I’d be travelling a 30 percent of the year (the position is international business development). That’s a lot to ask of my wife. Plus she’d have to leave her job here (which is quite good) and find a new one there on top of everything else.
I’m legitimately on the fence.

November 2nd, 2012 at 10:01 AM
Yeah, no doubt. When I’m not travelling I’d be working from home, which would be nice. And the money is substantial.
I’m a big “quality of life” guy, though. We’re fine now. I’m not sure that, at 30, I want to start hopping on airplanes again twice a month. Yes, more money improves quality of life but there are other costs. Leaving my wife while she’s pregnant, when the child is a newborn, over holidays — I dunno, that’s really not my cup of tea these days.

A best friend of mine was looking at a home in that Historical area in Forest Hills there. Some amazing houses in that little enclave there in EC. My wife worked at the Hough library for a while. Let’s have another DC metro area demographic discussion. I’ve got my charts at the ready!
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:08 AM
I realize these two statements are likely not connected but I just imagined someone calling Cary a hick area and lost it laughing.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:08 AM

The Containment Area for Relocated Yankees.

November 2nd, 2012 at 10:11 AM
My Rhode Island born uncle lived there for a while. I imagined it was an upper middle class suburban type of place?
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Definitely not connected. Cary is a suburban hellhole filled with Northerners (I’m a northerner and still think it’s awful). Cary as a hick area is definitely funny.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:12 AM
Reminds me of all the girls from Myers Park and Providence talking about how they love being southern girls and their sweet tea and levis. Bitch you live in an affluent metropolitan area filled with other transplants you’re not a southern belle you’re a bankers daughter.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:12 AM
It’s one of the most affluent areas of the south.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:14 AM
Never heard that. I like it. I had a job offer there about 5 years ago. I strongly considered taking it.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:15 AM
I live about 4 blocks away from Sugarloaf Parkway. It’s where all the rich people live. But the area I live in is strictly middle-class. Lots and lots of hispanics and Asians. Crazy how the demographic change as you go from block to block.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:15 AM
So I got a raise (make more in an dekasecond than you do in a lunar month Rodney) on the condition I make it to work on time/take it seriously. No more arriving at work in 105 minutes late wearing a strangers basketball shorts after taking coke for the first time to survive taking too much GHB (1st time) during a bender the night Bin Laden was killed. There is a client meeting first thing this morning. I wake up 45 minutes late after boozing until 3:30 last night. Throw on a shirt, pants and sprint out the door. No hygiene was performed. Hurrying on the way to the subway I notice a giant stain on my shirt. It looks like frosted icing? I have no recollection of this but there is a giant fucking cum stain on my shirt (I thought this only how hovel people live like Mole). Hit the subway with perfect timing planning on buying a shirt somehow the second I get to the financial district. Hit the second subway with perfect timing, going to make it. The only place I can find store to sell a shirt is here at metro paradise. So I arrive at work in this giant blue tourist shirt with the maple leaf inside a peace sign after changing in an alley. Arrive just behind the client. The perfect crime in a horribly misfit tourist t-shirt until the 5 minutes into the meeting the client points at me, fans the air and says “Late night? You sell me like a bar room carpet.”
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:15 AM

Sports anyone?
It is relative. If Jim Brown had been born in 1988, with access to modern training techniques, I’m guessing he’d be a complete beast.
And I wouldn’t bet against Jim Brown 1.0, transplanted to 2012, being near-elite either.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:18 AM
That sounds like the gayest Mario Kart track ever.

i think it’s neat, folks voting for third party candidates who have no prayer. not a wasted vote, it’s your voice.
what i would be upset about is if third party voters tipped the scales for a candidate i was afraid of/did not want to see as potus.
you won’t see your candidate win, perhaps will never change the system with your vote, and someone incomepetent/dangerous could win office.
i get that you must dislike both major party candidates to be voting third party, but i think there is something to the lesser of two evils

I think if you live somewhere that isn’t one of the major battleground states, it doesnt matter either way. So you might as well vote 3rd party, if you’re really fucking fed up.

I think if you live somewhere that isn’t one of the major battleground states, it doesnt matter either way. So you might as well vote 3rd party, if you’re really fucking fed up.
THIS. If I were Gary Johnson, I’d be appealing to Obama supports in the flyover states and Texas, as well as Romney supporters along the West Coast and in New York.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:28 AM
“I think ”
Lot’s of evidence to the contrary on that point.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:29 AM
When people say they see no difference between the two parties I can only think they’re excusing either their apathetic cynicism or they are at the far side of either extreme political spectrum.

‘78.4 Percent’
That’s what Nate Silver’s model says are the odds that President Obama will win the Electoral College (as of 1:55:05 P.M. EST.) Not 78.5 percent. Not 78.39 percent. Not 80 percent or 60 percent. 78.4 percent.
However you come down on the soundness of Silver’s model. — FWIW though I’m a layman, I was a fan of Silver the baseball statistician, and think his model, from what he’s written about it publicly, is plausibly built, even if I suspect that he’s following in sabermetrics godfather Bill James’ footsteps by assigning weights to inputs based on what produces outcomes that feel right — Where was I? Oh yes, however you come down on the soundness of Silver’s model, I’m irked by how both supporters and detractors seem to be interpreting it.
Let’s be clear. When Nate Silver says there’s a 78.4 percent chance Obama will win the Electoral College, he’s expressing a degree of confidence in a prediction. He’s not inventing a new verb and saying “President Obama will be seventy-eight-point-four-reelected” or creating a hundred parallel universes wherein “78.4 percent of Barack Obamas will be reelected.” He’s making a prediction about a binary outcome, based on his reading of the data, and then stapling on a measure of confidence to that prediction.
So one can think that Silver is probably right about the Electoral College, and simultaneously think that the 78.4 percent number is basically meaningless. Or rather, that it is impossible to formulate the epistemological difference between “There is a 78.4 percent chance that Obama will win” and “There is a pretty good chance Obama will win.” A lot of Silver’s credibility counts on somehow elucidating the distance between those two propositions, in somehow explaining how his model adds value to what amounts to an expression of the conventional wisdom. As I understand it, Silver runs a very large number of simulations and the 78.4 percent number reports the distribution of outcomes in those simulations. If this is a way of saying “Obama has more paths to victory than Romney”, that’s, again, probably true, but it’s also the same thing that every two-bit pundit with a humanities degree (myself included) has been saying for a while.
UPDATE: Generalizing hugely, Silver’s electoral model works like PECOTA — the career-modeling algorithm developed for Baseball Prospectus. It incorporates past election outcomes, and most crucially the correlation between actual outcomes and what the polls predicted. The issue there, for me, is that PECOTA had a pretty good N of playeer careers to work with. If you want to know what kind of year Robinson Cano is likely to have in 2013, PECOTA has a lot of actual prior career trajectories, weighted for era, home ballpark, and the like, to compare with Cano’s, and the resultant predictions, and especially “similarity scores” are intuitive — they usually “make sense” to baseball fans. But as one of the commenters pointed out, presidential electoral dynamics (and demographics) are fluid enough and quality, extensive polling so recent a phenomenon, that the number of comps is maybe four or five — or maybe zero.
Anyway, that’s spitballing. I hope no one takes me to think myself qualified to appraise the validity of Silver’s model. What the original post was about is how we should characterize the relationship between Silver’s technical work and the vaguer, layman-speak we use to talk about the election.

I’m considering a move to NC at the end of the year. Raleigh. The job opportunity is fantastic but its a major relocation for me and the wifey. Still on the fence and I need to have an answer by the middle of this month.
Queef – lived in Raleigh for 10+ years and in Charlotte for 4 years before that.
Everything you hear about Raleigh is probably true – new, clean, excellent job market, good schools, reasonable housing prices, etc.
What you will find once you have live here though, that isn’t in the Chamber of Commerce brochures, is that Raleigh lacks any discernible culture or identity. It is a giant suburb with no real internal city/urban area. It is a city of transplants. It is also EXTREMELY family oriented. In short, Raleigh is straight vanilla.
That’s both a positive and a negative – if you are looking for someplace where you can buy a nice affordable home, have a nice job, good school for the kids, almost no crime, great neighbors on a cul de sac, it is the place for you. However, if you like a vibrant downtown scene, with arts, bars and clubs, restaurants, professional sports, or any sort of “weird” element, it ain’t here.
Not criticizing, I obviously still live here (3 kids), but just know what you are getting into. All things being equal, give me a scene like NOLA (my hometown) or Austin any day of the week.

My dad’s family is from west of Charlotte, love NC as well. People are friendly and pretty easy-going, from what I have experienced in the visits I have taken.

maybe, maybe not…remember when he was playing, he was the size of a lot of the linemen.

“When people say they see no difference between the two parties I can only think they’re excusing either their apathetic cynicism or they are at the far side of either extreme political spectrum.”
I used to think there were a lot of big differences. And rhetorically, there are on many issues. But in terms of actual results and actions in governance, it’s an echo, not a choice. Obama has, in many ways, expanded on the Patriot Act and general surveillance state that Bush brought us. The Republicans put us on the path to financial ruin, and the Dems, while in complete power from 2008-2010, only excacerbated things. Romney’s first year, if he has one, will still be marked by a deficit approaching no less than $800 billion, if not more.
Do they differ on gay marriage? Abortion? Sure. Is either of those issues going to be resolved decidedly one way or the other and magically cure our fiscal woes? No.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Agreed 100%. I really like the way he approaches things but I think (zing) that people take the numbers – now 80% – and say “there’s no chance Obama loses, that’s almost 100%!” A one in five chance isn’t that bad.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Gaston County????
If I’m being honest, the reason I vote for a democrat as President over a republican is the shaping of the SCOTUS. To me that’s the biggest impact a president can directly have.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:37 AM
also, jim brown now would not be playing on a team coached by paul brown, quarterbacked by otto graham and stacked with premier talent around him because the browns were one of the few teams doing analytic scouting at the time.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Bingo. You just hit me on the head. I’ve scaled the work back to have more fun with my wife and kids. For me, money isn’t everything. I still make a sweet amount that affords a great house, but we’re still on strict budget because I’d rather be around more.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:37 AM
That sounds like the gayest Mario Kart track ever.
Damn that’s funny. I live right off of there too. Probably shouldn’t admit that.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:38 AM
not sure why those are political issues, but that’s an entirely different debate.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:38 AM

Leaving my wife while she’s pregnant, when the child is a newborn, over holidays — I dunno, that’s really not my cup of tea these days.
Get out while you can.

LOL’d

The truth hurts.

Winner.

Oops — that was regarding this:
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:43 AM
No, that would make me a teacher or landscaper or unemployed in Ireland.
Part of this I blame on the filibusterer whereby two diametrically different parties can only agree on mundane issues and veto anything they ideologically oppose.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:43 AM
“The truth hurts”
What’s that, now?
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:44 AM
the poop squirts > the truth hurts
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:45 AM
This. When the kids come along, quality of life and being able to spend more time with them becomes a priority.
Queef, so other than the lack of support system for you guys, Raleigh is a great place for starting a family. Part of me still wishes we lived there, and if you do move there The Inner Beltine traffic moves clockwise, Outer moves counterclockwise.

I’m working as a poll watcher in a heavily black and heavily poor neighborhood on Tuesday. I look forward to not running into a single instance of misrepresentation of ID laws outside the polling place, no sir not one.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:48 AM
I had the displeasure of working for the Lee chain once. I cannot dispute anything this guy said.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:49 AM
I still dont understand it fully, as Ive heard individual polling places can still ask you for ID.. but since it isn’t a law yet, do they have the power to turn you away?
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Some glitch.
That’s a bigger concern than voter fraud.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Two major Canadian newspapers bereft of talent with one paying a known hack plagiarizer both decided to install a paywall. $20 monthly for the plagiarized one. Was talking to work about creating a website aggregate the simply steals there content and says “fuck you” but they are not enthused partly because I stink of booze while wearing a 400lbs man tourist t-shirt.
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:52 AM
They can ask you for ID if you’re a first time voter where you’re voting. You can also show a utility bill to prove residency. If you don’t have ID, you are still allowed to vote normally.
It doesn’t help that the state is still running ads telling people to show ID at the polls.
November 2nd, 2012 at 11:05 AM
and stacked with premier talent around him because the browns were one of the few teams doing analytic scouting at the time
oh, and because there was 12 teams not 30-something
November 2nd, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Son, you really don’t want to get into a battle of youtube clips concerning supporters for each candidate. The McCain ones from 4 years ago by themselves are atrocious.

No, he was my manager at a different company 6 years ago, got fired there and went to a different company. He started his own company and recruited me here. I have a whiskey bar (empty as fuck right now) in my desk. I am very profitable high performer but a horrible mess of a person and set a terrible example (Michael Irvin).

“Sure, maybe not as much as jumping on a bicycle with the seat missing…but it still hurts.”
November 2nd, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Yea, I’d like a little more money, but I think I can find that locally. This would be a LOT more money, but it would have most costs, ironically enough.
Appreciate all the advice, guys.

“Appreciate all the advice, guys.”
More money could likely buy you more friends, though. That way you wouldn’t die as alone as you are destined to now.
November 2nd, 2012 at 11:23 AM
I appreciate that, it’s big of you both in sentiment and protein.
November 2nd, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Nothing brings in the friends like an open bar at the funeral of your wife who killed herself.

ARTHUR: This is what I am. Everyone who drinks is not a poet. Some of us drink because we’re not poets.
SUSAN: A real woman could stop you from drinking.
ARTHUR: It would have to be a real big woman.

Spectacular, all is forgiven.

For it being low hanging fruit, it would have been nice to see you take a swing as opposed to the bunt your response represents. But alas, anything other than bunting would make you different than what you have always been on here.
