Heat-Celtics on TNT – When the Northeast Was Without Power – Had More TV Viewers Than a MLB Postseason Game
Yankees vs. Orioles, Game 4 of the ALDS, Yankee Stadium: average of 5.2 million viewers on TBS.
Celtics vs. Heat, Game 1 of the NBA Regular season in South Beach: 5.3 million viewers on TNT.
Of course, those NBA numbers would have been significantly higher if not for Sandy, which knocked out power all over the Northeast. In 2010, the Celtics/Heat opener drew over 7.3 million viewers.

Which means…what?
November 1st, 2012 at 12:39 PM
what were the ratings for the pregame show?
November 1st, 2012 at 12:39 PM
FUCKITY FUCK FUCK FUCK
November 1st, 2012 at 12:39 PM
A regular season NFL game has more viewers than the NBA Finals.
/don’t worry bro…I’m just stating facts, not trying to compare the two.
November 1st, 2012 at 12:40 PM
Whatever reality singing competition that is currently airing probably gets more viewers than both the NBA and MLB combined. Plus a couple more million. My conclusion? People are stupid.

NBA IN RATINGS DROP CRISIS!
Also what NFL game was this going up against?
November 1st, 2012 at 12:41 PM
That the NBA didnt go up against an NFL game

can they capture ratings for replays? hey, did yoou see garnett ignore allen? hey did you see dwade not beat up rondo because his kids were watching? No? well change channels now!
November 1st, 2012 at 12:41 PM
Yikes, down 27% from two years ago. Heat fatigue? People just tired of only two or three teams having a chance for the title? Good thing Stern is on the way out, maybe Adam Silver has some answers to tough questions.
November 1st, 2012 at 12:42 PM
These posts strike me less as reporting and more of you desperately trying to prove some sort of personal point. I get that you like basketball Jason, but what is this vendetta you have against baseball? It’s as though you think the only way to talk about how great the NBA is is by trashing another sport that it only competes with for viewers for small portions of the year.
November 1st, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Basketball will naturally become the second most popular sport over baseball as our chinese overlords take over.
November 1st, 2012 at 12:43 PM

November 1st, 2012 at 12:45 PM
not jason, but my vendetta with baseball is that golf competes for the same viewers and is a superior televised and in-person product in seemingly every single way imagineable*.

someone tried to argue for hockey players. i think they are the toughest, but not best
standards seemed to be athleticism, not endurance or hand-eye skills. more like running, jumping, body control, etc.

I just can’t fathom giving a shit about a flawed metric measuring an obsolete system?
How many people self reported to be using butter churners in 1931?
In an online poll how many people use an anti-skip discman that barely fits in a winter coat pocket this year?
November 1st, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Truth. Granted the one golf event I regularly attend is a massive party and the one baseball stadium I regularly visit is an aircraft hanger.

One of my wife’s coworkers has a generator, so we went there yesterday to shower and charge the phones and Kindle (muy importante for the little one).

Actually think it’s much more likely to be due to the fact that that game was Lebron’s first Miami game.

November 1st, 2012 at 12:54 PM
I wouldnt say it’s Heat Fatigue as much as there being so much intrigue in the Heat in the immediate aftermath of the Decision. People wanted to see how the 3 stars would play together. That kind of interest was never going to last. Plus now that the Heat have won, the LeBron storyline has changed, he’s completely out of the pressure cooker at least until the playoffs start.

We get it that MLB isn’t a huge draw on television, we get it that it’s a team by team draw, we get it that baseball is boring to you, but seriously what is the point of all these posts about ratings? It’s like you go out of your way to piss off 1/4 of your loyal readers just to repeat something that you have already stated.

Picking a “random” NBA postseason game involving the NBA’s most popular team, the Lakers – game one of their series against the Thunder – 6.687 million viewers.
How bouts another “random” game. 3.8 overnight rating for game three. Impressive. On the same day the Yankees/Sox regular season game pulled a 2.7. The two NHL playoff games scored a 2.5 and 2.4 respectively. Regional action!
Also, 5.3 million viewers is 1.6% of the population of the United States of America. NATIONAL INTEREST THROUGH THE ROOF

My office is in the same situation. I was told another 5-7 days. I’m working out of another office today, which raises another issue because the commute is twice as long, and I don’t know where I’m going to be able to find gas.
I’m optimistic my house comes on soon. The downtown area of my town got power last night, so hopefully my area of town comes up soon.

I think we are a little defensive because you pick and choose your comparisons and tend to leave out important facts. People initially were kind about pointing out some of these faults with your posts, but you continually ignore them and just repeat the same stuff and have occasionally gotten beligerant to those individuals. This causes the other like-minded and neutral individuals to stick up for them and then before you know it, there are 2 camps here and the MLB crew feels it is something to get defensive about.

We were without power for over a month post-Ike.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:16 PM
If you can’t see the difference in the tone of those posts then I can’t help you. (copyright, you). “NBA ratings down, here are excuses! MLB ratings are up, but they still suck!” I don’t think people mind ratings post. I, for one, am usually pretty interested in them. People seem to be bothered by both your clear cherry-picking and clear condescending tone.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:16 PM
8 days of 100 degree, humid weather this Summer without power and I live in a major metro area. My optimism died a very painful death, but at least I could see both the city lights and houses 300yds away having power.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:17 PM
oh. so your issue is with the tone of the posts. The numbers are inarguable, but the tone/delivery are what you dislike. Got it.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:18 PM
My suburbs fire chief lives across from me and I have a major shopping center 500yds away, as well as the largest hospital one mile from my house. It did nothing for me, mostly because I think the chief didn’t want to show favoritism by taking his oak tree off the power lines ahead of others.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:18 PM
Would have prefered to be able to go outside, was 3 degrees celcius and raining the entire power outage.
A month after ike? Wow, that is some bullshit.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:19 PM
i did check it. I googled. I have done the homework. It is in the post.
Why don’t you stop being lazy and bring something to the table? Don’t ask questions, provide answers.
You want the other numbers, go get them.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:19 PM
The gas station that’s a mile from my office this morning had about 30 cars trying to get gas at 7:20am this morning. And I need gas as well. Also hearing stories of shortages..just great.

That’s the most JMac non-response response I’ve ever seen.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:20 PM
Some communities I’ve driven through are in for at least another 1-2 weeks. There are a lot of roads that are still unpassable because of downed trees, which need to be cleared before the utility crews can even think about coming in.
The reason for my optimism, as I’ve said, is that the downtown area 2 miles down the street has power. And I’ve seen nothing (downed wires, etc.) that would prevent them from hooking me back to society.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:20 PM
Why don’t you stop being lazy and bring something to the table?
I just crystallized somebody else’s reasoned comment into the truth about you sucking. So I’ve done my part. I’ve earned my paycheck.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:20 PM
So flippant. “The numbers are inarguable” yet, you give paragraphs of excuses for NBA playoff ratings. For MLB ratings, you put up a short post and when questioned what it means and what context to take it in you shoot back “you tell me”. TELL ME you see the difference.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Fuck you, Rex.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Big baseball guy here, but not in denial. The numbers are meaningful. Baseball is declining in popularity amongst the younger people. Demographics aren’t what they were in the 70′s. Got it. In fact, I got it a long time ago. It’s not really newsworthy any more. And certainly baseball ratings aren’t newsworthy when the NBA season has started.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:22 PM
If you’re supplied underground, that’s actually worse.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:23 PM
I think you’re actually talking about two different points here. I would agree that baseball is in decline with the younger generation, but not because the ratings are down. I think that correlation is much closer to 0.5 than 1.0.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:24 PM
This Sandy bullshit is just another reason to not live in the Northeast. Come to the midwest, where the only hazards are drunk drivers and fatties!

The ratings thing is entirely the result of there being a billion more channels now than there were in 1970.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:32 PM
I don’t know if entirely is the right word. It’s a big part of it for sure. The racial makeup of the country has changed also. I like ratings posts, but would love to see a more indepth look. Instead of regurgitating some ratings tweet, it would be great if TBL could do a breakdown of the ratings falloff. What numbers is the NBA getting from latinos, blacks and whites and how do they differ? How does the lower percentage of white people overall affect the baseball ratings? Anyway, I don’t think there’s much of a market for these types of indepth looks at things on a site like this. But there IS a reason Lisk is so popular. He tries to delve a bit deeper.

So has the US.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:47 PM
How does the lower percentage of white people overall affect the baseball ratings?
it has been getting “less white” for the last 7 years.
NFL and NBA are both majority black, no? i’m not sure whether there’s a significant point in comparing ratings to the racial make up of the players.

Hardworking White People are the true minority in this country.
The last time I saw a white janitor/cleaning lady who didn’t look like they spent their entire paycheck on meth or blew it down at the casino was a long, long time ago.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:51 PM
This whole racial component doesn’t really explain the rise in lacrosse as we continue to move Native Americans off the field and into casinos.

It is a beautiful thing. I am thoroughly enjoying this.

Is your neighbor from Kansas?
November 1st, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Is your neighbor from Kansas?
he’s just from somewhere rural. And he keeps buying more things, and putting them on payments. He’s got a nicer lawnmower than me, but he pays for his 100 bucks a month for 48 months.
November 1st, 2012 at 1:59 PM
walmart has reinstalled layaway
childhood memories of ben franklin layaway
November 1st, 2012 at 2:01 PM
Layaway’s never really made sense to me. You couldnt save some money between January-September but all of a suddent you’re gonna be able to save the money between now and December to pay that off? Get better at managing money, a-holes.
/those stories of strangers paying off other peoples’ layways are nice tho
November 1st, 2012 at 2:03 PM
Layaway’s never really made sense to me.
there didn’t used to be credit cards available to anybody, not even store cards. Just store accounts. Then, you could put a thing on your store account, and pay on that account, just not have the thing till you’re done.
Now, you get the thing instantaneously, and can pay for it later. And that’s working out great, for everybody.
November 1st, 2012 at 2:04 PM
in my case cj it was because we had a single mom household. she worked two three jobs at a time, so not sure if credit cards were an option. layaway worked well. case by case for sure
November 1st, 2012 at 2:06 PM
Hey JMAC leage championship ratings wer eup 11% WHY DIDN’T YOU POST THAT?!!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
November 1st, 2012 at 2:06 PM
AND my typing sucked on that due to rage
November 1st, 2012 at 2:07 PM
It makes sense in a time without credit cards, I guess. But still, you have to pay for that stuff eventually. Like right after the holidays right? Seems like right after the holidays would be the hardest time to pull that money together, instead of saving up for the first 8 months of the year for it. I dunno.
November 1st, 2012 at 2:09 PM
this is a safe place dunker, a haven if you will
November 1st, 2012 at 2:09 PM
But still, you have to pay for that stuff eventually. Like right after the holidays right?
no, with layaway, you go to the store today and select a christmas present for your kid. And you pay 25 % of it down, but they keep it. Then, you pay more either weekly or monthly, until you’ve paid for the thing. Only when you’ve fully paid for the thing do you get the thing.
So once you’ve got it, you’ve already paid for it. That’s the store laying something away for you.
November 1st, 2012 at 2:10 PM
iirc cj there was no interest either. pay 20 bucks a month or whatever and like dirt said, you get it when you;re paid up. was all year round not just holidays
November 1st, 2012 at 2:12 PM
I was actually referring to the U.S. white population. My sense is that white people view baseball in pretty good numbers and black people watch basketball a lot. I really don’t know what the latino sports viewing habits are (other than futbol). Maybe white people made up 75% of the population in the 70′s and now they’re only 55? Maybe baseball is crushing the NBA amongst white people. Maybe young white peoples’ mlb:nba viewing ratio is still the same. Maybe baseball’s biggest crime is not better targeting young latinos, a demographic which I think USED to be in baseball’s wheelhouse. I don’t know. I’m a numbers geek. I’d be interested to see breakdowns.
November 1st, 2012 at 2:14 PM
I’m guessing with layaway option, the final cost of the product is knocked down significantly. otherwise, why not just save the money yourself and buy it when you can afford it? Why go thru the trouble of making payments each month?
November 1st, 2012 at 2:15 PM

They watch the Doyers, and then the Lakers when they are winning championships.
November 1st, 2012 at 2:16 PM
I’m guessing with layaway option, the final cost of the product is knocked down significantly.
In the old business models where layaway was a valid thing, there was extremely little variance in what things cost. The retailer set a price (usually double wholesale) and that was the price. They’d run one day sales from time to time.
But, if you laid something away at a certain price, that’s the price it was. Because you cost the store a chance to sell it at that price. So you didn’t get a sale price (if there was one), you got the service of paying in installments.
November 1st, 2012 at 2:17 PM

you really don’t understand the concept of living paycheck to paycheck, huh?
November 1st, 2012 at 2:19 PM
What I’d like to see is how many second or third generation latinos still retain their interest in baseball that got passed down from their dads. Or do they just become football fans with minimal or no interest in following baseball.
November 1st, 2012 at 2:21 PM
I didn’t know there were people that didn’t know what layaway was/is. Generational thing, I guess.
November 1st, 2012 at 2:23 PM
I’m 27. I’ve heard of it of course, but I don’t think I’ve ever met someone that bought anything on layaway.
November 1st, 2012 at 2:23 PM
That layaway discussion reminded me of Christmas Club accounts. Do they still have those?
November 1st, 2012 at 2:27 PM
I’m 27. I’ve heard of it of course, but I don’t think I’ve ever met someone that bought anything on layaway.
I hadn’t heard of anyone in years, which makes this Wal-Mart thing odd. I’m 37. I remember when people would talk about how many more payments they had until they could take their microwave home from Duckwalls. And it was always, “theirs,” even though it sat in the store and wasn’t 100% paid off.

my dad, salvadoran, loved football and baseball, played neither in his youth. i think if you are a sports fan and have no other options — american soccer was not a thing then, and there were three main channels — you can enjoy and appreciate. he may have gambled, not sure, but i can picture him getting excited watching sports. he told people i was going to be the next willie mccovey when i was born, so enough of a fan to do that
November 1st, 2012 at 2:32 PM
I’ll bet Sandusky destroyed nearly as many toilets there before they nabbed him.

one part differentiator, one part demographic of walmart regular customer, i’m guessing. lots of folks cannot qualify for credit cards and/or have no relationship with a bank
i’ll be interested to see how popular it is, who uses it, etc.

The first time I heard the term was Chris Rock’s stand up talking about bullets. It definitely is a generational thing.

If it makes you feel better, I’ll be sticking with a bald head by the time I get to late 20′s. Not ready to do so yet, but it’s coming soon.

I don’t think I’m going to go full bald, but my hairline has definitely seen better days.

Chronologically, closer to 45. Psychologically, closer to 75.
Mileage, wear and tear, closer to 105.

I drove through Paris, TX when I was 21 on a fishing trip to Lake Fork. That was the shittiest city I had ever been to at that time. And I had been to Liberal and Garden City.

Grew up 30 miles from Paris, TX in a town way smaller. When we needed something- we drove to Sherman or Paris, if that tells you anything.
Lake Fork is some of the best duck hunting I’ve ever done.
