Kang Ye-Bin Will Be an Octagon Girl When the UFC Visits China in Two Weeks
Kang Ye-Bin is a Korean television personality. On November 10th, the UFC will head to Macau, China for UFC on FuelTV: Franklin vs. Le. Kang will be a guest Octagon girl for the show. She has high expectations for herself that night. From The Chosunilbo:
“I’m thrilled to be Korea’s first Octagon Girl. I’m just a little anxious whether I’ll be able to do a good job, but I’ll try my best and hopefully I can raise the spirits of our three Korean fighters in the UFC,” she said. “I’d like to look sexier and hotter than [Mexican-American Octagon Girl] Arianny Celeste.”
That’s a fine goal for a rookie.

I’m not sure UFC did their homework here. She’s Asian, but not Chinese. Natives to China aren’t going to look at her and think, ‘Wow! She’s one of us!’ They are going to say, ‘OK. She’s Korean. Big deal.’
(Or worse, since many/most Chinese have Koreans somewhere down the ethnic totem pole beneath them.)
It’s like hoping that American UFC fans would see a Canadian Octagon girl and immediately identify with her. Such a thing would be a big shoulder shrug.
