Scott Torgerson Plans to Sue After Getting Fired For Desmond Howard Tweet
Deposed ESPN Radio Host Scott Torgerson plans to sue his former station 97.1 The Fan over his dismissal for tweeting his wish Desmond Howard would “get fired or die.”
From a statement on his website.
I have been fired by 97.1 the fan. No severance, no health insurance with a newborn and a wife with A-Fib. I want to thank everyone for their support. I want you to know I reached out to the Howard family and they accept my apology. I am truly sorry for the tweet. It was a joke. Nothing more. I will write the same thing I tweeted that day. Sorry if I offended anyone. Please don’t send Desmond or his wife tweets.
I do have Counsel and unless something changes I will file suit. My Counsel feels we have a very strong case so I will not comment. On Herbie no comment. Sorry I can’t say a word on this one.

I might be getting him confused with numerous other shock-jock wannabe sports radio “personalities”, but didn’t he initially defend the tweet?
October 25th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
But he can always fall back on his degree in…communications!?! Oh dear lord.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
I had a well done tomato, garlic, and hot peppers pizza for lunch today. Cute waitress was a bonus.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
My stories 99% true.
This guy needs back in radio. He isn’t going to get a paycheck by writing about sports.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
Well this is just shitty all around. Wish they didn’t have to fire him, but understand why they are. Wish the dude was smart enough not to tweet unfunny nonsense that would threaten his job, but he wasn’t.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
There it is, the greatest non-apology apology out there…passing the blame to people who have the nerve to possess an opinion on the matter
October 25th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
fuck this guy
October 25th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
Tell me more…. about those hot peppers.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
What basis does he even have here if the station is privately owned? Being stupid isn’t a protected class
October 25th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
I still agree with him, Howard sucks and that show is horrible.
// just don’t say die next time
/// my guy

What??!! His wife ran off with A-Fib???
October 25th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Since when?
October 25th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Is there a union for radio like there is for tv? That is the only way I see this working, if steps in a collectively bargained process were not followed.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Figure he has a contract, so be he’s going to claim that he did nothing to violate said contract and he should get whatever severance is stipulated.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Probably should have come to this conclusion myself…wonder if the station just settles then although a trial could be interesting
October 25th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Very common and usually carrying no symptoms.
/Can’t believe he played the a-fib card

Discovery about Herbie’s influence.
/This is what passes for drama in the 614
//Herbie burned his house down and tried to take a tax deduction for the full value.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
You don’t have a right in this country to not be offended though. What ever happened to sticks and stones, isn’t that what Mrs. Howard should be teaching their children, instead of faux outrage?

David Stern is going to retire Feb 1, 2014
October 25th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
I would laugh and then wonder if I am that bad at my job.
/fire him!
October 25th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Company probably stands by their interpretation fired with cause since he damaged their brand or whatever by threatening Desmond Howard publicly.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Oh my, name Bettman the successor. NAME HIM NOW!
October 25th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Bitch should be taking a class on having a real first name, not teaching anything.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
What if he says a variation of that everyday he’s on the air though?

Being stupid isn’t a protected class
No, but they help elect our government officials, so we got that going for us, which is nice.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
I’m just telling you that the station is going to try very hard not to pay him any benefits and there’s a decent shot they won’t have to.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
The newborn card was good enough. Cant imagine what a newborn would cost without insurance.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Say whatever you want, whenever you want. Expect no opposition or consequences, ever. When consequences ensue, become outraged, then offer transparent apology which really isn’t an apology because you maintain there is nothing to apologize for. Simultaneously say it was taken out of context, etc. Mary, uh, I mean Sue. Rinse/repeat/and so on and so on.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
we had my wife on her insurance and mine. the OB’s office told us that probably saved us a couple thousand. of course, our baby was in the NICU for 24 hours.

Hey shitbird, maybe you shouldn’t have slagged on ESPN employees (Desmond & Kirk) while you yourself are employeed by the local ESPN radio station. Never bite the hand that feeds you fuckhead, have zero sympathy for this brain-dead assclown!
October 25th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Fuck all you haters, I’m gonna miss Stern.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
My first born, I was paying for health insurance on my own. To keep it cheap, I had a huge deductible like $10K – essentially it was catastrophic care.
I went to the hospital and OB and negotiated a flat rate and paid it up front, for all costs for well-baby delivery – wrote a check. Amounted to about a 35% discount or so. It was quite the deal and everyone was happy.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
I had no idea you could be on both?
October 25th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
Fuck Dave Stern.

October 25th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
it cost about $90 extra a month to get her on mine. hers was her primary and mine was her secondary. the secondary basically paid whatever was left after the primary paid up. it was a hassle and a half to get the two companies to communicate with each other, but we ended up paying nothing. it was a huge relief…especially when we saw the Explanation of Benefits from the NICU stay.
October 25th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
I know I can for my eyes. I haven’t had a reason to try medical.

Words of advice from my Old Man, “Son, don’t get marries and don’t have kids. So later on down the road, I don’t want to hear you bitching about them.”
Now that is sound advice
/sadly, did not take it.

I agree with starkweather — justified termination due to reputational harm to company brand, and for interpreted threatening nature of tweet.
They’ll also fight paying him unemployment for same reason, so I would be surprised if he gets any compensation.
October 25th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
I will write the same thing I tweeted that day.
“However I will not click Tweet.”

It’s killing me that I can’t remember the kicker’s name…Plemchenko or something?
October 25th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
His “Save the Torg” page has more followers than the actual 97.1 website on FB. It’s astonishing. I think he is horrible and can’t believe the love protest he is receiving. Really makes me question the intelligence of this city.
/waits for it
October 25th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
I just found out Mitch Albom has a radio show. That’s awful.

Someone was arguing yesterday that unemployment officials never question UC filings and just dole out the dough. That someone obviously has never been on unemployment.

Unemployment is paid by the company that does the firing. And if you go to gov’t arbitration to get unemployment and it is fought by the company, then your employment record becomes public.
/Not that I know anything about that.

How do I start a twitter account? I want to lose my job.
I always thought twitter was aptly named. You have to be a ‘twit’ to be on twitter.
