President Obama Goes On Leno, Asks NHL to Settle Lockout, is Looking For Votes in Wrong Country
President Barack Hussein Obama went on the Tonight Show to talk to Jay Leno about the NHL lockout. I’m just going to assume this was the entirety of the interview because I’m not going to watch any more Leno that I absolutely have to, am I right! (#teamcoco*) Anywho… President Obama encourages the NHL and its players to think of the fans who buy the tickets and pay their salaries… when he should be back in Washington president-ing! In a related joke, Mitt Romney will go on Letterman to make sure The America’s Cup goes off without a hitch… Satire!
*Remember that? When was the last time anyone watched Conan?

When was the last time anyone watched Conan?
That was a brilliant marketing plan by Leno, Letterman, Kimmel, and Conan. Last night TV is dead. Lets generate some controversy. Hardly anyone watches those shows.

Would be enjoyable and amazingly awkward

Leno and Letterman average something like 8 million viewers per night between them. Not bad for the 10:30 (11:30 to you east coasters) time slot. The only problem is that the average audience age is increasing steadily.
October 25th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
The first week he was on TBS once or twice.
October 25th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
I’d watch if Louis CK really did replace Letterman.

People in their 40′s and 50′s do I’d imagine. If they’re awake. And like stale jokes.

Seriously, does anyone watch Leno outside of my parents, your grandparents and the walkers from Walking Dead?
October 25th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
I’d watch if Louis CK really did replace Letterman.
I have my doubts that this would happen. I can see CBS maybe taking a shot at luring Conan from TBS though.

I was sort of indifferent towards him when he was on NBC.. thought he was funny at times and definitely better than Leno… something different about his new show though (which I’ve only seen maybe 3 times). Did he get new writers too?
Leno Remains awful. Ferguson is pretty good though.

Can’t really do that when there was already a baseball post (non ratings related) this morning.

I’m 27 and been watching late night tv shows since I was 10. I don’t like Leno, but let’s face it, Letterman stopped trying about 20 years ago. I didn’t get to watch his show when he was apparently reinventing the late night talk format, but for years now, he’s just been going thru the motion. The guy simply isn’t funny anymore.

The Nate Silver true believers are a sight to behold. The guy correctly “called” the 2008 election where 47 of 50 states were no-brainers, and got the remaining 2 of 3 right — all while having access (NDA-protected) to Obama’s internal polling numbers.
He then swung-and-missed terribly on the 2010 midterms.
I wonder if the NYT will keep him employed after he blows this election too, or whether he’ll have to go back to where he started from, as an anonymous blogger on the Daily Kooks.

The guy who trims my beard does this. He goes hot towel, then pre-shave oil, then warm shaving cream and then uses a straight razor to do the trimming. Finishes off with a cool towel and after shave. Leaves you feeling like a million bucks.

I think I’m going to get a shave next time I go to get my haircut. I developed a bad habit of shaving against the grain when I first started shaving. Now whenever I have even a hint of a beard developing, it hurts like hell when I shave.
This is one of the reasons I decided to grow a beard. My skin was getting too irritated but I couldn’t get a close enough shave without going against the grain. My dermatologist gave me a cream to take care of the irritation, but when I was in Europe this summer I just let the growing begin. I do not miss shaving every day. Not even a little.

October 25th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Statistical evidence? Really?
He’s assigning different weights to different polls. That’s not “evidence” of anything. But it is the same “evidence” that led him to forecast, at this juncture of the race in 2010, that the Rs would pick up only 49 seats in the House. Of course, they picked up 63.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
If Nate Silver gets credit for calling the 2008 race then I want credit for correctly predicting, at dinner last night, that the sun would come up this morning.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
isn’t this cute? i almost forgot how the crazy conspiracies come out from the right when they debunk information they don’t agree with.
seriously though. If Romney does not win OH/WI he needs to win NV, VA, NC, CO, FL, NH, IA.
i haven’t seen evidence of Romney winning OH/WI just yet on a consistent basis and he’s down in NV, IA, NH, VA are becoming toss ups.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
I am fully aware that his model can change as it did in 2010. All I am saying is he was right in 08 and in ’10 he was right again. If he blows this one then its on him but he isn’t the only guy out there with the same forecasts.
I don’t know why you pointing to his forecasts 2 weeks before his election as a way to disprove his record. If he is misses badly, and Romney wins the EC handily, then that will kind of speak for its self wont it?
October 25th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
He’s assigning different weights to different polls. That’s not “evidence” of anything. But it is the same “evidence” that led him to forecast, at this juncture of the race in 2010, that the Rs would pick up only 49 seats in the House. Of course, they picked up 63.
As they only needed 38 seats to take the majority this seems like borderline nitpicking. The 2010 wave was on historic scale equal to that of 1994 when few predicted that Republicans would have the gains that they did. Wave elections are also, historically speaking, outliers.
If you don’t care for Silver then I guess you shouldn’t read this guy who HTown linked to earlier.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
A lot can change in two weeks, in Congressional and presidential elections. Including this year.

To be completely honest… should this dude’s vote count?
Considering he cast it during the state’s early voting period I don’t see what the problem is.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
why wouldn’t it?
October 25th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
to be completely honest… should this dude’s vote count?
Yes. Why shouldn’t it?

Yep. Don’t wanna mess with a WWII ghost.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
I’m not a huge Charlie Cook fan (/team Stuart Rothenberg) but he states in no uncertain terms the uphill battle that Romney faces in the Electoral College:
In national polling, measuring what the popular vote might look like, this race is dead even. There is still a tougher path to 270 Electoral votes for Mitt Romney than for President Obama. Ob ama can count on winning 19 states plus DC for 237 EV, Romney 23 states with 191 EV. To win, Obama needs to win just needs 33 (30%) out of the 110 Electoral votes in the nine Toss Up states, Romney needs 79 (72%) of the 110. Even if you give Romney FL, NC and VA (and none sure to go Romney), he still would be 22 short if 270. Watch OH and CO, NH, IA and WI.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
absolutely. no reason it shouldn’t.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
A threefer. You screwed the pooch, CJ.
She’s got an excuse though: pregnancy hormones.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
I realize it can happen all the time, but it feels weird to me. Like you’d want people voting who are actually going to live with the consequences of whoever they vote for. Trivial, I know.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Probably true
October 25th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
She’s got an excuse though: pregnancy hormones.
She’s been pregnant for eleven months now. I think that was just a ruse.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Well technically, it does say if they receive his death certificate they do have the legal right to remove his ballot, just that it’s not worth the time and effort to do so.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Jesus dude, people call me here Nazi all the time. I know that Spencer, Moleman, Soused and rest of the people are just playing around. But with you, I’m not 100% sure. I get the feeling that you really want my throat slashed.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
so if Herban Meyer casts his vote in Ohio in a few weeks and has a heart attack on the way out of the voting center, his vote shouldn’t count? I agree.
/extreme outlier counterpoint
//because it’s the internet
October 25th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
exactly. and there’s no indications Romney’s momentum from the first debate is still carrying him as it was, it seems it has either slowed down or started to go towards obama. Hard to say since yesterday was the first poll released with early returns on the 3rd debate.
and we’ll see how this whole Mourdock endorsement things does to women in the swing states. it may do nothing, it may mean everything, but it’s pretty late in the game to tie yourself to someone with an extreme view after you paint yourself as moderate the past couple week.s
October 25th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
Technically no. But it really comes down to the feasability of finding that vote to invalidate it.
Not really extreme, it’s the same basic idea.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
and if he was in Ohio voting for Mitt he’d be called a patriot and anyone who wants to remove his vote hates america, apple pie and enjoys torturing kittens.

I kinda sound like a Vet hating scumbag, but it’s the idea of dead people voting for a future election as a whole that makes me uncomfortable. Not a huge issue though.

FLA, VA, CO + OH (or NH + WI). There’s your 270+.
Not a single poll of repute has shown Romney with a lead in Wisconsin. The majority of polls in Ohio favor Obama and have consistently even if the margins are smaller than they were two months ago. I disagree with Cook on Florida, I think Romney has the state won. Virginia and Colorado are completely up for grabs.
The problem with your house of cards there is that two key states in each iteration (Ohio and Wisconsin) have by small, but consistent margins, favored the President.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
well if a dead person is voting then that means we are in some sort of zombie utopia where the dead have taken over and have formed a working government.

cool, where’s the supporting data that Romney will win OH?
I’ll give you CO and VA and FL, i’m just curious where you see in more than one poll that romney is tied or leading in OH?
i mean, that’s like saying Romney is up in national popular vote 50-49, but Obama will win 52%

The latest Ohio poll out shows O +5 … with a sample of D+9. Ohio was D+5 in 2008, and D+1 in 2010. You feeling comfortable with that spread?
Haven’t seen any recent WI polls, but they have been within the margin of error, no?
October 25th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
all this political shucking & jiving going on here.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
I did. it was in #169.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
You can’t just look at the top line numbers and call it a day. Look at the sampling, and how it compares to the past two elections. If O enjoys a +9 turnout in Ohio on election day, then obviously it’s his. But will he get a +9? That’s what the poll has.
And all joking aside, I’m not predicting Mitt will win those — just saying that’s what he needs.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:43 PM

Yes I do.

They vary. Some are within the margin, but others are not. But they are nearly unanimous in showing Obama with a lead.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
then we’ll be perpetually recounting ballots in FL for all the people that die between election day and when the electoral votes are ratified.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
My cousin who is very wired in Denver believes that the Dems ground game will help them win CO. I think VA could go either way. Obama will win NH, WI & OH.

That is the question. Democrats have historically been hurt more by low turnout than Republicans. If there is a high national turnout on Election Day (and some states are reporting record numbers of early and absentee votes being received) then Obama likely wins reelection.

What argument? That the race is too close to call on Oct. 25th despite what Nostradamus Silver says?
In fairness not even Silver is calling the race. He’s only said that Obama, as of today, has about 72-75% chance to win reelection.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
+1. No politically connected. We discussed CO this morning and he was the one who said the groundgame the Dems have is massive and that they have millions of $$$ ready for Get Out the Vote in the next two weeks.

Shouldn’t the fact the Obama will landslide Cleveland be an indicator that he may not be the best possible choice?

plus Obama can only lose the black vote. He won’t gain much , if any votes from them percentage wise.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
no, the probability as of today for Romney to win the states he needs to win to prevent Obama from hitting 270.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
id make the same argument, albeit with an incredible amount more credibility, by pointing out that romney will probably landslide cincy.
October 25th, 2012 at 1:57 PM

I don’t think turnout will be as good as it was in 2008 but I do think it will still be quite high. The poll you cited is assuming a certain turnout….if Obama is in the vicinity of the 2008 turnout he still wins. I’m not saying it won’t be close, it will, but the vast majority of polls show Obama’s lead to be a stubborn one. Taking that in the aggregate is perfectly valid.

October 25th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
I just think a D+9 sample in Ohio — when it was D+5 in 2008, D+1 in 2010 — is a strange sample to have, and needs to be considered in a poll that has O +5.

Said this before, I’ll say it again: if Nate Silver and other respected pollsters had Romney up in all these battleground states and libtards were saying that the polls are biased and flawed, the right would be losing their minds and hailing Silver as an unassailable prognosticator.
