World Series: Detroit Tigers at San Francisco Giants
Barry Zito, noted pimp, vs. Justin Verlander, rumored pimp, opens the World Series in gorgeous San Francisco. The Giants are underdogs because the Tigers have the better bats and the better arms.
I’ll go with the Tigers in six.
So can we talk about ratings already? We talked about ratings before and after the NBA Finals, and we talked about World Series ratings with Joe Buck. If the NCLS viewers are any indication, it’s going to be an old crowd watching tonight.
Viewers 50+ made up 57% of NLCS on FOX audience. 1.0 rating in male teens, 1.2 in 18-24s, 4.9 in 50+. Median age of 54

More Women 50+ than Men 18-49 watched NLCS on FOX.

Both the 10p and 10:30p airings of Duck Dynasty on A&E had virtually identical audiences as NLCS on FOX

I don’t know what Duck Dynasty is, but I just checked the schedule and it is on tonight. So if Verlander is dealing, and the Giants are down a few runs …

Harsh. I still can’t get back into watching it, myself though. Once I quit playing, lost all interest in watching it.
October 24th, 2012 at 7:41 PM
And when you find a new site, let me know what it is. I’ll add it to the list of shit I can’t get on while I’m at work.
October 24th, 2012 at 7:42 PM
Giants in 7
Only person that cares about the ratings are you Jason…great baseball series with two storied franchises.
October 24th, 2012 at 7:44 PM
Does anyone care about ratings outside of media people?
October 24th, 2012 at 7:45 PM
Does anyone care about ratings outside of media people?
Companies that spend millions of dollars on ads.
October 24th, 2012 at 7:50 PM
Jason is media people? Does that mean the people at TMZ are media people too? I wonder what Walter Cronkite would say about that.
October 24th, 2012 at 7:52 PM
Advertisers are still gonna spend on the WS…live sports on a national network during October before an election year. Jackpot.
October 24th, 2012 at 7:55 PM
Forty-six.
Who’s Phillip Phillips? (He’s fucking terrible.)
Fuck ratings.
Go Tigers.

October 24th, 2012 at 8:16 PM
the Tigers have… the better arms.
I don’t think this is true. Where are you getting this information?
October 24th, 2012 at 8:19 PM
Tigers in 6.
October 24th, 2012 at 8:20 PM
Jason will one day realize ratings arguments are bullshit and just unintelligent. YES LET’S COMPARE NETWORK RATINGS TO CABLE CHANNELS WHILE IGNORING FACT THAT RATINGS DONT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT PEOPLE WATCHING ONLINE!
Goodness, id rather read a post on his favorite CW shows than a ratings discussion
October 24th, 2012 at 8:20 PM
Tigers have better starting pitching. Giants have better bullpen, stark
October 24th, 2012 at 8:25 PM
I figured TBLAD would be on a GIF of Kate Upton in the stands. Tigers in 5.

October 24th, 2012 at 8:29 PM
Closest I’ve come to watching any baseball this year (beside the one Phillies game my boss took me to) was that GIF of the guy on the Giants hitting the ball twice the other day.

Not going to lie, I had to google Duck Dynasty. I’d never heard of it, and am not in a race to get home and On Demand that shit.
October 24th, 2012 at 8:30 PM
Meth, did you see that Monster Energy drinks can kill you? Link was in the roundup one of the last couple days.
October 24th, 2012 at 8:30 PM
One hell of a hit. JV still should of gone junk on that pitch though.
October 24th, 2012 at 8:32 PM
Meth, did you see that Monster Energy drinks can kill you?
I wouldn’t need an article to know that. Did I tell you the bank story?
October 24th, 2012 at 8:39 PM
Not yet. Story time on TBLAD.
October 24th, 2012 at 8:47 PM
My brother got me started on drinking those things, but I didn’t drink them often (now I’m a fucking addict). I never felt any effects from them because I kind of nursed them, just enjoyed them. But it was summer time, and my truck doesn’t have A/C, so if you want to drink your drink cold you gotta slam that motherfucker. And I pounded it on the way to the bank. Well all was good, I’m standing in a long ass line at the bank. I get about halfway through the line and I notice my right eyelid just start twitching a little bit. But then it starts really going off. Thought my heart was going to explode and I just remember thinking I gotta get the fuck out of here. I bet I could’ve went blow to blow with a gorilla that day, dude. That fucking thing had me jacked.
October 24th, 2012 at 8:52 PM
But it was summer time, and my truck doesn’t have A/C, so if you want to drink your drink cold you gotta slam that motherfucker. Meth
I remember those times. Back in college my truck didn’t have air. Except it was cold Natty Lights I had to pound before they got warm.
/Don’t drink and drive kids.
October 24th, 2012 at 8:54 PM
i had a similar reactoin to a XL vodka/redbull one time. It was about 1.5 redbulls and about 6 shots of vodka. I chugged, and about 15 minutes later (on the metro in DC) I started feeling really twitchy, heeart was racing, the works. We were on the way to a football game and it took me a long walk from the metro to FedEx field bfore I felt halfway normal again.
October 24th, 2012 at 8:57 PM
Expect full recaps of Hart of Dixie starting next week.
October 24th, 2012 at 8:58 PM
i had a similar reactoin to a XL vodka/redbull one time.
Fucking Jeigerbombs (spelling?). My brother and I always drink those when we get together. Why? No fucking idea. The drunk half of you passes out, but an hour and a half later the red bull half of you wakes up with eyes as big as saucers ready to raid and pillage.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:12 PM
BERSERKER!!!!
October 24th, 2012 at 9:12 PM
Slow night on the TBLAD…must be a riveting episode of Duck Dynasty.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:15 PM
I don’t know how my friends and survived our early 20s with the amount of Red Bull and vodkas we drank. Of course, back then it didn’t help that it was just some random shit the bartender at our dive bar made up, and he only charged us for 1 in every 3, as long as we through a massive tip at him at the end of the night. I still remember walking in on a Saturday afternoon to get one, and he said that they were out, because the 3 of us that had been in the night before had drank the 2 cases of Red Bull almost by ourselves. Thank god for a cool bartender that at least started cutting down the amount of vodka in each drink.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:17 PM
Go Giants!!!
October 24th, 2012 at 9:18 PM
Damn, panda
October 24th, 2012 at 9:18 PM

PANDA!!!!!
October 24th, 2012 at 9:20 PM
because the 3 of us that had been in the night before had drank the 2 cases of Red Bull almost by ourselves.
That’s one thing about the Jeigerbombs, too. That Red Bull mixed in for some reason gives you the ability to put down way more booze than you normally would. I go to bed drunk, wake up shortly thereafter fucking cranked, and then sometime later I’ll finally get back to sleep, and wake up sometime in the afternoon wishing I was fucking dead.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:27 PM
Verlander 5 hits 4 runs 70 pitches thru 3.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:28 PM
Fuck yeah the caffeine makes you not feel as wasted as you really are.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:29 PM
I dont know how people drink red bull. Tastes awful

October 24th, 2012 at 9:36 PM
Honestly, though, how many people are watching the World Series online?
October 24th, 2012 at 9:36 PM
Key West, St. Patrick’s day, 2003. Last Spring Break for myself and my 3 most alcoholic friends. We stumble into the Irish bar around 9 AM, one of us wearing green body armor made of Mt. Dew cases. 3 of us order Guinness, as is only correct at 9 AM. The 4th, the one in the body armor, tells the waitress that he just can’t do that yet, and asks her to please bring him something with Red Bull in it. She comes back with our beer and a drink for him. He looks at it and asks, “What the blue fuck is that?” She replies, in the most chipper voice known to man, “Jaegerbomb!” He actually turned green before drinking it. Two days later, this man was trying to swim across a parking lot made of crushed coral after chugging from a tequila bottle because he “really needed to puke.”
October 24th, 2012 at 9:37 PM

LMAO. Awesome. Alcoholic friends are the best.

Barry Zito singles in a run! 5-0.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:41 PM
Verlander almost to 100 pitches in the 4th.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:42 PM
Kate Upton won’t be putting out after this showing.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:42 PM
Barry Zito singles in a run! 5-0.
It’s funny that you asked everyone the other night who thought the Cards were going to close it out when it was either 3-1 or 3-2 in the series. I said probably, Giants pull out the comeback and are stomping that ass tonight. Go fucking figure.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:43 PM
Well, then again, she “dated” Mark Sanchez.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:43 PM
Even better when they are residents and have no problem spending their stipend checks on large quantities of booze and also live 6 blocks from the only good bar scene in Indianapolis. That two year period will always be hazy.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:44 PM
I said probably*, Giants pull out the comeback
*As in Cards will probably seal the deal.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:44 PM
98 pitches thru 4 for Verlander.
What a horrible performance. Use that pen up!
October 24th, 2012 at 9:50 PM
I always knew Verlander was a post season bust.
/kidding
October 24th, 2012 at 9:51 PM
Whoever would have thought Barry freakin Zito would be outdueling Justin Verlander in the World Series?
October 24th, 2012 at 9:52 PM
I dont know how people drink red bull. Tastes awful
It came out when I was in college. Or the Red Bull/Vodka thing got big then. Mid-late 90′s. Drank those all night at the riverboat in NKC because I was told I could get drunk but still stay sharp playing Pai-Gow. There is no need to stay sharp playing Pai-Gow. The dealer sorted my cards out for me. I was wrecked for two days. I only drank Red Bull a couple other times before skiing. Not fun.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:53 PM
LOL Ive seen wasted people at the casino asking the dealer for advice on Blackjack. And also asking dumb questions about why they busted and what happened and seeing the dealer explain it to them. Kinda sad.
October 24th, 2012 at 9:58 PM
Ive seen wasted people at the casino asking the dealer for advice on Blackjack.
Then on the way home: “What’s the officer, problem?”

October 24th, 2012 at 10:03 PM
I always knew Verlander was a post season bust.
How quickly is he approaching hillbilly status? Will he be wearing blue denim overalls and brushing his 3 yellow teeth in no time at all? Will he refer to his VCR as “the sex box”?
October 24th, 2012 at 10:05 PM
Giants sweep?
October 24th, 2012 at 10:07 PM
LOL Ive seen wasted people at the casino asking the dealer for advice on Blackjack.
Pai-Gow doesn’t even involve strategy. The dealer would just shift my cards around to the best hand possible. Back when I gambled it was the best stoned drunk game there was. Thankfully for my bank, I hate casinos. Too many sounds and flashing lights. Home poker games talking shit was much more fun. Now, I’m in bed by 10 at night. Haven’t been in a casino in quite some time.
October 24th, 2012 at 10:08 PM
Pai-Gow doesn’t even involve strategy.
I’ve never even heard of that game.
October 24th, 2012 at 10:10 PM
He’s just a bad ass that lays pipe to Kate Upton.
October 24th, 2012 at 10:11 PM
Would you care to place a wager on that?
October 24th, 2012 at 10:13 PM
He’s just a bad ass that lays pipe to Kate Upton.
Absolutely. I guess when you go home to that every night you never lose.

Does anyone care about ratings outside of media people?
did not read past this comment…will be interested to read responses
ratings posts get some heavy engagement here…boggles my mind, but a lot of folks here care about ratings and know quite a bit about how TV works/is covered, etc.

Does anyone care about ratings outside of media people?
They matter in terms of the amount of money corporations will pay to advertise their services during a game. They are certainly not a measure of weather a sport that has been around for over 100 years and consistently draws millions of fans (including setting attendance records) is dying. SO. DUMB.
October 24th, 2012 at 10:25 PM
The one thing I haven’t seen a post on… (shocking!) what did Pepsi or Coke or Bud light pay for a commercial back in 1988 vs. today? (with inflation factored in of course) Because I’d imagine that has gone up despite the ratings slump.
Because that’s really all that matters in terms of the “health” of the game, right?
October 24th, 2012 at 10:26 PM
if ratings posts got 1 comment saying “this sucks” and no more pageviews it would be Yardwork’d before the next sponsored post went up.
but we’re all suckers for shooting fish in a barrel.
October 24th, 2012 at 10:27 PM
Holy shit are these Doritos Locos Tacos commercials self important.
“We knew it was going to be big…”

It’s like they invented some sort of new sex position.

Honestly, the best thing for ratings would be a couple of bench clearing brawls early on. That’s a ratings gold mine. Bud needed to tell Albuquerque to throw at Panda’s head.

Re: Red Bull…
I was finishing up my second year of college in spring 2000 and I had a philosophy exam to take. I stayed up pretty late and so felt really shitty when I woke up the next morning (about 5 hours of sleep or so). I had a Red Bull within an hour or so of getting up, so I immediately felt a pep in my step.
I get to school and start hanging out in the newspaper office so I can keep studying and work on other stuff. During this time, I’d forgotten I had a Red Bull earlier in the day (still don’t know how I forgot).
I was starting to feel like ass about 30 minutes before the philosophy exam, so I popped a can of Red Bull and downed it. I go to my exam and the first 10 minutes of class are okay.
Right around the time I was answering the second essay question, my right hand (my writing hand) starts trembling. Like Tom Hanks in SPR. I’m literally holding my shaking hand with the other, which is now also starting to twitch a bit. I’m trying to keep my head forward because I’m worried if I start looking around the old preacher teaching the class will suspect I’m cheating.
I sat hugging myself for another 20 minutes and sweating profusely while I tried to mentally overcome 2 cans of Red Bull in a four hour period. By the time I finished the exam, my t-shirt was glued to my body and I had an awful case of swamp ass, and I felt like something was going to take me over and cause me to run out into traffic to try and tackle a Buick. Good times. I think I got a C or a B on the exam and got a B for the class.

that arena set up is worse than the arena set up in Phoenix when the yotes played at the downtown arena. No idea how they’re going to make that work without it having the feel of a minor league arena. Tons of lost revenue from only have 1/2 the available seats along the glass too.
October 24th, 2012 at 10:54 PM

Bettman said it’s “not an issue.” But a capacity of 14.5 for hockey, I would think they have to do something about that.

But a capacity of 14.5 for hockey, I would think they have to do something about that.
especially given that the price$t seats (aside from boxes, of course) are along the glass (I’m assuming?) and.. well, that set up only provides about 1/2 of the normal #.

The Doritos Locos Taco is the most overrated food item ever.
First off, it doesnt even taste like Doritos. Also, I prefer not to have my hands full of orange dust when I eat a taco.
It’s not horrible, but not this revolutionary food invention that Taco Bell seems to think it is.
October 24th, 2012 at 10:57 PM
I’m reading where the Barclays originally was designed for use as a hockey arena, but those plans were scrapped in favor of basketball only. OOPS.

The NY Times was reporting earlier today that it was supposed to be a 25 years deal and LI residents have voted down building a new arena multiple times. They’re staying in Brooklyn for a while, but the Islanders don’t move in until 2015 so they have time to make modifications to the arena for hockey.

No, he was a “special consultant” to Howson. He was never really given a full time job with anything that carried power.
Davidson has full authority over all things on ice related.
/Can’t hurt

How did I fuck that up? He’s getting snow already. Geese fly south in the winter. SROD better start flapping. Winter is coming. And the night is dark and full of terrors.

I would guess that Howson’s days are limited. Like very limited. Either that or he will learn from Davidson quickly.

Meth, ya remember that lake here I told you about? We got a flock of lazy geese that don’t go south for winter. Buncha freakin’ crap machines.
Some geese here don’t fly, they walk. Slowly.

best non-sportswriting job i ever had was working for a park distrcit’s naturalist department. we got to do controlled burns. fucking thing was, i had to study and take a test for a herbicide license, but not to set and control fires, some of which was on PD land that bordered subdivisions
axes, weird tools that looked like crowbars/axes, metal water backpacks, flappers to tamp the embers. i respected fire very quickly, but gd was it fun standing on a log that had a fire inside it and had to be put out, in the middle of a forest that was probably tame by western firefighter standards but seemed apocalyptic
got to use chainsaws too

but not in a fire

We have a few of those around here, too. They learn that kids will walk by and throw them pieces of bread, so they say fuck it and shack up.

I hear ya. We got ducks & squirrels in addition to the deadbeat geese. The squirrels will walk right up on ya, trying to bogart your McNuggets.
I’ve had the squirrels step to me like “‘Sup? Whatchu got for me, Smoke?”

Chainsaws rock.

That’s a capital offense. Death by firing squad.

took the kids to a forest preserve last year. there are lots of ducks there. the kids were 5 and 4 and 4, and bc the ducks were so used to people throwing food, they swarmed the kids, scaring them and delighting them at the same time.
if i may go mr. mom on you, it was magical
