Heisman 2012 Power Rankings Week Eight: Collin Klein Takes the Lead
Collin Klein [QB - Kansas State] Klein needed a decisive move to pass Geno Smith. Setting career highs in passing yards and total touchdowns, as Smith faltered in the same game, was just that. In a weak field, his lead is overwhelming.
Manti Te’o [LB - Notre Dame] Te’o moves up to the runner up position with Smith faltering. His narrative is strong and compelling. He’s a lock to reach the podium, as long as Notre Dame’s defense keeps performing.
A.J. McCarron [QB - Alabama] It’s hard isolating McCarron’s success from his supporting cast. Others would love to play with his defense, offensive line and running game. That said, it’s hard faulting his contribution to Alabama’s season or finding a more compelling candidate from the SEC. McCarrion is first nationally in passer rating, third in yards per attempt and has not thrown an interception.
Kenjon Barner [RB - Oregon] Someone needs to travel to New York. Barner is on pace for more than 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns for a BCS Title contender. He has not had a national showcase, yet but he’ll get some high-profile opportunities to prove himself against USC, Stanford and Oregon State.
Geno Smith [QB - West Virginia] There was an overcorrection this week, which should dissipate over the final weeks. Presuming West Virginia stems its tailspin, Smith will still put up some insane numbers and rack up some third and fourth place votes.

Braxton gets back in the top 3 after this weekend. McCaron’s a very good QB but he’s not even close to being the best player on his team. Get Manti Te’o off the list. He ain’t no Honey Badger or Suh.
October 24th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Ryan Nassib from Syracuse!
/says noone but the diehards that call into syracuse radio
October 24th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
Braxton, gone? Braxton is gone.
October 24th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Kind of a weak group this year, no?
October 24th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Mauti > Manti Te’o
October 24th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
I loathe Notre Dame but you’re totally blind if you don’t think Te’o is Heisman worthy. Honey Badger wasn’t even the best player on his team. Special teams player, yes, but Claiborne was ten times the DB Mathieu actually proved to be.
/ohio state can eat a bag of grenades
October 24th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
Impressive considering how he got tattooed against Purdue.
October 24th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Anybody with experience travelling to Hawaii? I’m looking for suggestions. Two places about 4 days each. I generally like what I see from Maui and looking for a 2nd locale. Relaxation and maybe some low-key sightseeing/hiking are my priorities. No high rises on a crowded beach.
October 24th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
McCaron’s a very good QB but he’s not even close to being the best player on his team.
Funny – Mark Ingram wasn’t even the best running back on his team and he won.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
Penn State is going to knock Miller out this week.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
How is McCarron on this list? The Heisman for best game manager. Smith has been exposed, Teo’s s good linebacker, but not the best in the country. At least you noted Barner hasn’t played anyone. So it’s Klein by default.
/Could have just said this….
October 24th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
Braxton, gone? Braxton is gone
i wish i could show you the pic of his helmet from last week. you wouldn’t believe it.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
October 24th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
He had like 10 yards at halftime last week….against fucking Purdue. He’s killing me. He’s like a more injured and less accurate version of 2010 Denard.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
Kaua’i.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
OK. He’s already a better passer than 2012 Denard.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
/ohio state can eat a bag of grenades
OK, first off: buckeye fans eating a grenade. We prefer beer and fried foods. But we’d have to adapt if we were forced to subsist off a bag of explosives. We’d eat them. Steal their power. And guess what, you’ve wandered into our school of grenade eaters and we now have a taste of them. We’ve talked to ourselves. We’ve communicated and said ‘You know what, grenades taste good, let’s go get some more grenades. We’ve developed a system to establish a beach-head and aggressively hunt you and your family and we will corner your pride, your children, your offspring.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Leaving a game OSU loses with an injury probably isn’t going to help.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
plus, having Guiton drive OSU to win the game hurts Miller’s cause (along with his dogshit performance against Purdue)
October 24th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Its unfair to compare Miller to Denard. Miller looks competent as a QB most of the time.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
I was laughing how there even a discussion of his injury. He got his brain scrambled (medical term). I predict on Saturday morning he’ll experience some sort of setback (cough, cough) and then not play. I think they are in for a tough day.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
GG – what the hell happened to South Florida this year? I mean, i’m not sad especially since Syracuse plays them this weekend, but damn, what a fall.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:08 PM

he’s been cleared to play i think.

October 24th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
Unless PSU somehow gets a bunch of speed and runs nothing but bubble screens, they’ll have a bad day.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
GG – I had the USF/Lousiville game as the local ABC game Saturday. I feel bad that they couldn’t get that win. Cuz f Teddy Bridgewater.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Funny – Mark Ingram wasn’t even the best running back on his team and he won.
he was the best rb on bama that year, actually. he was also the most important qb at certain critical moments. he deserved it.
How is McCarron on this list? The Heisman for best game manager.
because any candidate whose team doesn’t finish undefeated will be forced to separate themselves with ridiculous stats, which is what the heisman has become. be awesome and win.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
I think Southern Miss has the market cornered on one year record reversals. Last year they finished 12-2, won the Conference Title and the Hawaii Bowl. This year they are 0-7.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Consider the Big Island. Volcano National Park. “Black sand” beaches. Plenty of places to hike.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
he’s been cleared to play i think.
I have zero faith in those medical reports. I hope he can manage.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
wait, are you saying Ohio State has a defense?
October 24th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
You didn’t see how good our converted (senior!) FB is at linebacker?
October 24th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
What Milk Steak and Babar have said. Unless you are loaded, when you got to Maui you will not be seeing the Hawai’i you expect. If you go to Kaua’i you will see the lush vegetation and whatnot. I’ve been to Maui, and it is nice, but you have to learn to live with everything being covered in dust from the sugarcane fields being burnt off. Your other option is the big island, but it is generally more expensive to go there.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
Against non-spread teams. Sure.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
Mauti > Manti Te’o
Agreed.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Liek Cal and their ~550 yards of offense. Or Nebraska. I’m not even sure what OSU games you are watching.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
I liked Maui. Some sick free beaches and snorkeling in Kapalua and Kaanapali. I had to definitely do it all on the cheap though. Rented a real beater from a local for the road to Hana, which added an extra layer of intrigue, i.e. will I ever fucking make it
October 24th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
he was the best rb on bama that year, actually. he was also the most important qb at certain critical moments. he deserved it.
Trent Richardson was better. And is better.
I think Ingram is quite possible the least deserving winner ever. Just me.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
ok those are some good tips, alot of which matches my first thoughts from scrolling through a travel guide. I will check this later too so any other thoughts are welcome.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
the osu that played cal and nebraska who both spread OSU out? that’s the one i was watching.
but i still agree with you…their D is dogshit no matter who they’d face. well, except for ol ginger mcgloin…he sucks more dick than liberace in a glory hole gauntlet.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
I may need to take back my statement after recalling Troy Smith, Eric Crouch and Rashaan Salaam
October 24th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
A.J. McCarron
Jay Barker scoffs at this.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
Purdue isn’t a spread offense from what I watched and they outgained OSU.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Mistakenly said Nebraska, meant the vaunted spread-attack of the Cameron Coffman led Hoosiers. Agree about McGloin.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
Dude. Storm Klein gave up a 83 yard pass cause he sucks and they bubble screened OSU one drive. That was it. D is improving. Still a major disappointment though.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
yeah I watched the Cal-OSU game and CAL ran 4 and even 5 WR on many plays. It’d say it was a spread offense
well, except for ol ginger mcgloin…he sucks more dick than liberace in a glory hole gauntlet.
!!!
October 24th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
A.J. McCarron
Jay Barker scoffs at this.
Settled: This horse is now dead. Well said, sripty.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Worst-tackling OSU team I can recall.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Perhaps meyer and fickell aren’t the coaches you want if OSU is to get a great defense down the road
October 24th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
Joel Stave just wins football games
October 24th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
Jay Barker does well with the ladies.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
here’s the thing…and it annoys the fuck out of me.
it’s not the spread that kills defenses, it’s the pace of the plays. you can’t sub, you can’t adjust and it doesn’t matter what you do since one guy’s getting read. the only way to stop it consistently is beat teams up front with superior DL, but even then, bubble screens and screens beat that.
it’s pace. it’s purely pace. it has nothing to do with spreading teams out or a zone read, it’s that they’re simple, proven plays that can be adjusted on the fly and repeated at a breakneck speed. a spread ran at a slow pace is essentially worthless these days.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
I, just, don’t know. It seems that every aspect of them has regressed, from the coaching on down. Yes, everyone here wants Holtz fired.
Thanks. I of course was rooting for you guys as well. It has not been a happy CFB house for me or my husband.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
a) that’s false
b) do you remember the florida defense for their first NC? what about the second?
October 24th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
Plus, I must add that my brother is the biggest Gaytor fan wanker. That makes it a million times worse.

You can fake an injury.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
Awesome to see TBL went from a Jets blog to a college football blog….which i’ll take everyday of the week and twice on sunday
October 24th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
it’s pace. it’s purely pace
Penn State runs a shit ton of plays.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
Remind us again who the defensive coordinators were for those teams?
October 24th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
It’s a cliche, but you have to put teams behind down and distance on first down. 2nd and 8 is a lot different than 2nd and 4.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
Against the spread, DBs need to tackle and not blow assignments. It becomes attrition, who will make more mistakes. The OSU DB have been sketchy at these two items.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:36 PM
I don’t think Geno Smith has been “exposed.” He has to put up points on every possession and that mindset is plaguing that offense right now. It’s the definition of pressing.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
This kills me because OSU wrote the book on playing throwing spread teams 10 years ago. It’s the bend but don’t break philosphy – keep things in front of you and wrap up. They murdered Mike Prices’s Washington State squad and Mike Leach’s Texas Tech squad doing just that.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Te’o is currently tied with two players on the NCAA total tackles rankings for 2012.
Without Google, can you name what place he is in?
The number of tackles?
The players he is tied with?
The team of the players he is tied with?
Or really, can you get anywhere close?
October 24th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
Were you thinking of going to the USF/UM game? I think I might drive over for that one.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
trent richardson was not better 3 years ago than ingram. if you start down that road, lacy will be better than richardson and yeldon will eventually be better than lacy.
this trend will continue until saban chooses or is forced to leave and the recruiting wheel slows.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:47 PM
Do you have
a
point
?
October 24th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
We are still considering it. Depends on money. Plus, we haven’t been to a game since the OB. Will certainly be weird.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:49 PM
He’s overrated as a player and Heisman candidate?
October 24th, 2012 at 4:50 PM
It really wasn’t that weird for me the first time. I think because I only went to the OB as a student. And I have tailgated at Sun Life forever for other events. Plus, once you buy the big beers inside and get a few of those in you, you don’t care.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:50 PM
As a Heisman candidate, yes, absolutely, but it’s a horribly weak field. As a player, absolutely not.
October 24th, 2012 at 4:58 PM
Ingram isnt the worst player to ever win, but he’s definitely the least deserving player to ever win.
October 24th, 2012 at 5:08 PM
They cut of sales at halftime for college. I had jsut enough in me to be angry.
October 24th, 2012 at 5:46 PM
McCarron would be the Gino Torretta of Heisman winners
October 24th, 2012 at 6:39 PM
Gino Torretta is already the Gino Torretta of Heisman winners. McCarron might beat out Eric Crouch as worst winner ever except for the winning the Heisman part.
