ESPN Radio Host Scott Torgerson, the Clown Who Called For Desmond Howard to “Get Fired or Die,” is No Longer Employed
ESPN’s Columbus affiliate 97.1 The Fan tweeted that controversial radio host Scott Torgerson, a Co-Host of “Common Man and the Torg,” is no longer employed by the station. Torgerson tweeted his wish that Desmond Howard would “get fired or die” so he could watch GameDay again. The comment, though not literal, was indecent. Free speech is a constitutional right. Remaining employed as a consequence of said speech is not. “The Torg” had been suspended indefinitely by the station and admonished by his colleague Kirk Herbstreit.

I look forward to this post turning into a calm discussion* of what free speech actually means.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Torg is probably going to experience the feeling of ennui as a result of this.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
If he had a history of saying stupid stuff AND doing counterproductive stuff in the workplace, AND it was all documented accurately…
If it’s a knee-jerk reaction to one stupid thing said, that’s just way too much overkill.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
Too bad he won’t be around for this epic Buckeye game.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
a clown, indeed.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
I will adjust my sports radio listening accordingly.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:10 PM
So, the show is just Common Man now? That’s actually kind of awesome.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Has this always been a thing? Or has it just gained popularity in our “Go along, get along” culture? Shouldn’t we encourage people to speak their minds without recourse? I could understand if he was actually being inflammatory but this seems trivial to fire someone over.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Common Man and the Torg
Sports radio hosts have the most ridiculous names.
The comment, though not literal, was indecent.
Thanks for clarifying that.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Free speech is a constitutional right. Remaining employed as a consequence of said speech is not.
I had no idea. Thanks.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Agree with SROD.
Maybe his show had declining ratings.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
Agreed, that sports radio is mostly awful.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
They should hire rapper Common to be the cohost so it’s the “Common Man and Common” show.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
No.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:20 PM
If it’s a knee-jerk reaction to one stupid thing said, that’s just way too much overkill. Srod
He didn’t get fired for wanting Howard dead. He got fired because he talked shit about an ESPN employee. ESPN don’t stand for that.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:20 PM
Why is this not front-page news at every major sports website???????
/…..
October 24th, 2012 at 1:20 PM
Be is a phenomenal album. Still rock that joint twice a month.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
I would be executed many times over for the contents of my search history. Examples of my work search history for today:
priss
Shane Macgowan
K Roth Binew
Taft Correctional Institution
valtrex (that was for Spencer)
katherine jenkins measurements
Sally Jenkins naked
October 24th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
According to the Daily News’ Bob Cooney, Tony DiLeo just said that Andrew Bynum will be shut down from any basketball activities until pain is gone in knee.
Shocking.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Fuck this radio guy
/Never heard of him until this incident
//Waiting for my employer to fire me over my neverending fuck this guy comments on tbl
October 24th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
Apropo of noting, Justified will end after its sixth season, and Jeremy Davies gets crazy Dickie Bennett hair by cutting it himself.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
I dig the clarification, but didn’t Kornheiser “talk shit” about Hannah Storm years ago (at least about her wardrobe)?
So, I think I understand there are graduated levels of punishment, to “fit the crime”, so to speak.
I guess my heartburn is, if you really wanted to correct his behavior, allowing him to stay in his job & act more circumspect may have been more effective.
We know how successful it was with Bob Knight, after all…
October 24th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
Not really, having listened to The Common Man Program here in Minneapolis.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
Torg is probably going to experience the feeling of ennui as a result of this.
His ratings were facile and this forced workplace emancipation will cause him to engage others into dispora to the land of government assistance.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
BETTER PASS A PISS TEST IF YOU WANT THOSE OBAMABUCKS, TORGGGGGG
/yesterday
October 24th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Is your employer ESPN?
/seriously, if I talked shit about a prominent member of my company on Facebook or Twitter, I would expect to be canned. It’s common fucking sense.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Free speech is a constitutional right. Remaining
employeda commentator on a sports blog as a consequence of said speech is not.October 24th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
It was much more this. He was a Midwestern “shock” jock, in that he said some marginally over the top things for the Midwest, which would never get a sniff in NY or Boston or LA.
He got canned because Herbie made a big deal of it, including a passionate (or asshole-ish) speech on the same radio station early the next week. If Herbie wouldn’t have been a cock about it, this would have blown over in about 3 days. So, here’s hoping that Kirk is proud of himself for getting a guy fired for a very, very stupid, yet utterly meaningless comment.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
That station is not owned by ESPN. It’s just an affiliate of some of their programming. I don’t think he’s held to the same ESPN-on-ESPN crime standards.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
I actually wish most of these local talk radio asshats with show names like “Big Stan and The Snatch” would get fired. Even if its completely without cause.
I was driving home from somewhere the other day and Fox Sports had a guy on who sounded like he was on a respirator filled with tank exhaust. Kept screaming “FEELING YOU” over and over again for no reason. Almost crashed my car it was so bad.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
Not surprised this comes from Ohio $tate University country. Lots of class there.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
And, that’s in the back of my mind as I wrote the earlier comments. This guy gets paid to say stupid, outrageous stuff (at least he did, in theory).
He will find another market to ply his trade. Not right away, but within the next 12 months or less. Book it.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
This guys gets it.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
Not surprised this comes from Ohio $tate University country. Lots of class there.
When I want class it up a bit, I go see Marilyn Manson.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Perhaps this guy has a history and was on his last strike? Perhaps said history was behind-the-scenes stuff with producers, co-workers, etc.?
October 24th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Ah, yes, personal attacks.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Well if people like Duffy would stop bringing it up where it literally has zero relevance it wouldn’t be a goddamn issue.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Are people allowed to do this after doing the whole “The place you live is shitty and the people worse” internet thing?
October 24th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
I know! its a good thing they play Michigan next year so we know what to expect
October 24th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
there really is no such thing as good sports talk radio is there? Cleveland is lucky enough to have two stations, on am and one fm, staffed with absolute garbage
October 24th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Had I said “scripty, you are a terrible person for being an Ohio State fan and even worse for living in Ohio” then yes. But I didn’t.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
Actually, he’s a pretty good guy, Ndub. He is a Minnesotan that actually brought hockey knowledge to town. He probably ticked some suits off because he called out the inept CBJ front office for what it was.
Sucks that the day the Jackets hire John Davidson, Torg get fired. He was actually geeked to see someone with hockey knowledge come to town to get the franchise back(?) on its feet.
Trust me. Herbie had a lot to do with this. His tirade over this was just absurd.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
If a talk radio guy has pissed you off, then he’s done his job.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
talk radio should always be used for background noise and nothing else. If 25% of the show is worth listening to, that’s a good day.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Every buddy needs to relax, I’ve sent all kinds of threatening work emails, makes for a better work environment.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Lame.

The World Wide DICTATOR.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Is anyone else always afraid to click on soused links at work?
October 24th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Yep.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Exactly, if I made a comment on some site about a dickhead coworker who’s a prominent member of the company, I would expect security to escort me out of the building. It would be the same if I made a similar “joke” hoping that a douche coworker died so I could continue with my daily responsiblities without worrying about him
October 24th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Based on that audio clip and that they work together, I’d say Herbie and Howard are good buddies.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
What?
October 24th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Tell that to Desmond’s wife and kids. Just a douche thing to tweet
October 24th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
I find it easier to just ignore him
October 24th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
WallysWorld – If the guy’s got a clean rep and seems to be a good guy, do you think maybe he and the radio ownership couldn’t agree on how to handle the damage? Maybe he said he’s not going to apologize for it, or told them he’d rather be fired than ___. I dunno. Just trying to make sense of it, if it seems like his tweet wasn’t literal.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Tell that to Desmond’s wife and kids. Just a douche thing to tweet
Yup. Telling someone to die and making Hitler comparisons are the two no-nos even in shock radio.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
Subject: Oi …….is this coworker Brazilian? Regardless, that is a great email
October 24th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
see I thought that was more of a ribbing than an attack.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
when you are a local radio show you know you can get canned for about anything at anytime; many people have been fired for less and yes, some have not been fired for worse.
kiss your station mgr’s ass and keep your demos and ratings trending up.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
They just added an Oregon home and home. When is Michigan scheduling USC?
October 24th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
It was a stupid ass tweet. I saw it come across live and cringed at it.
Torg apologized straight to Des, only to have it thrown back at him that his daughter (who I believe is out of high school) couldn’t understand that comment.
It was a suspendable offense. But, I, like most others, would wish Des would find another line of work… far, far away from ESPN and GameDay. It was a poor choice of words.
I just think it’s an over-the-top reaction to something that should have been taken with nothing more than a grain of salt.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Jemele Hill learned this the hard way in shock journalism
October 24th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
It’s cruel to wish death upon Desmond Howard because there’s no way in hell that someone with his wife’s name is intelligent enough to handle an estate sale.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
I have no idea if Desmond Howard sucks on TV or not. I barely watch College GameDay. I do know every time I flip it on poor Corso is struggling. That stroke really messed him up.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Only to get promoted later on for no good reason.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
to be fair…desmond howard is HORRIBLE.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
The Dick Clark of college football.
October 24th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
Joey Galloway is HORRIBLE.
October 24th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
I didn’t know who this Jimmy Saville guy was until it came out the last few weeks that he’d been raping more women than an NFL player with a clean criminal conviction record, then I read he was the “British Dick Clark” and now assume Clark was a rapist as well. Fair? Fair.
October 24th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
Yes. Yes, he is. He used to come on Herbie’s radio show in Columbus and was just brutal. His voice is not good for it. He inflection is even worse.
When I heard he was doing games on TV this year, I almost fell out of my chair. Then, I figured he must have improved his delivery.
/WRONG
October 24th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
I miss Spielman. I think they took him off OSU games because he makes Fickell look bad by pointing out ways to improve the defensive play calling.
/wants Spielman on staff
October 24th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
I read some of that stuff on him. Fuck him and fuck anyone that knew him well, including the media folks that all intimated that they knew about bits and pieces of his fetishes for decades.
October 24th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
agreed on galloway, and agreed on spielman being fucking awesome at everything ever.
October 24th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
The fucking definition of failing upwards. God I hate that woman. I do condone terrible tweets directed her…just make sure you’re not an espn employee
October 24th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
Who would have guessed this guy would be a sex offender.
October 24th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
Not Queefer.
October 24th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
No, you don’t. He’s the Alpha Dog. He absolutely could not handle being second dog to a coordinator, let alone the HC.
Chris has been thru a ton and has become a better man for it. He’s doing what he needs to be doing right now. He gets to watch football, commentate on it, then go home to his kids.
October 24th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
for the reasons you outlined in your second paragraph is why i think it’d work.
October 24th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
He can just recruit all the best linebackers in the land.
October 24th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
/coop
October 24th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
That job previously belonged to the most notorious sex offender in the land.

October 24th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Not Queefer
Well done
October 24th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Screw him. becaus eof him, Columbus sports talk radio was taken over with hockey and wrestling talk. Like the friday before the Michigan game, they’re talking WWF.
And screw Herbie. He had an afternoon drivetime show that was pretty good, but now he just ISDNs in an hour a week.
October 24th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
Agreed the Blue Jackets should move to Pittsburgh and be our second team.
October 24th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
Also, I hope desmond Howard dies so I can watch College Gameday again.
October 24th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
After Davidson gets done with them, they might be worth something. Then, that will make something else that people who aren’t from Columbus can bitch about.
/Adjusts ascot
October 24th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
I mean, my god, Johnny Fever got canned for saying “booger” on the air.
October 27th, 2012 at 9:35 PM
This is hilarious;we have posting on this article 1)Racists hating on Joey Galloway,2)Jealous-ass folks hating on Ohio State because of what an idiot radio host tweeted, and 3)Stupid folks just posting comments that have NOTHING to do with this story.Goes to show how limited those with room-temperature IQ’s really are…Go Bucks!!!!!!!!
