Landon Donovan Gives Himself “50-50″ Shot Of Playing At 2014 World Cup
Landon Donovan gave a candid interview to ESPN’s Roger Bennett, where he claims there is a decent chance he would not appear for the U.S. at the 2014 World Cup. Donovan, struggling with injuries, has appeared in just eight of 20 games under Klinsmann.
When asked if he expects to play at World Cup 2014, Donovan strives to be as transparent as possible. “I don’t have the answer to that,” he responded. “There are a lot of moving pieces: Will I be playing, period? Will I be part of the team? Will I be good enough to be wanted?” he continued. “If I had to guess I would say it is 50-50. I will have more clarity after I take a break.”
Donovan’s comments feel jarring – athletes rarely address existential crises with candor – but they shouldn’t be. He has never been a pathological athlete, driven by some insatiable urge to compete. He’s past his peak, feeling his body break down and facing imminent entry into the real world after playing professional soccer since his teenage years. It would be abnormal if he were not feeling some form of ennui.
Will Donovan play for the US at the World Cup? Well, the U.S. has to qualify from CONCACAF first, but we would guess yes. He will be called up if playing and healthy with his combination of skill and experience, even for a limited role. He has said things in the past when exhausted at the end of a long season. Donovan spoke of the possibility he might retire in the same breath as the possibility he might not be alive in 2014.  Despite the recent talk of retirement and lack of motivation, he still flew to Antigua to try to play for the USMNT with a knee injury. What we read most into his comments about his future is he’s sick of people asking him about it.
Landon is only 30 (even if it is a grizzled 30). We’d expect, when he gets more clarity, one last chance against the world’s best will keep him around to 2014.

Dempsey is only a year younger than Donovan. I’m concerned about not having him at peak performance in 2014, should the USA quality.

not really.

Babar here. Question about pageviews. Do Landon Donovan 2014 World Cup/Polish MMA Knockout posts get more pageviews that an NLCS Game 7 Recap? Or are the posts just more geared toward the author’s niche/interest?
Just curious.
I’ll take my response while lurking.

We all might not be.

Man imagine how broken down he would be if he had any ambition and played in a real league with an actual physically grueling season.

There was a NLCS game 7 last night?

Sounds like he is done with MLS as well and is sort of letting them know that. He will be at the WC if the US qualify and he is healthy.

Soused here, like to clear up a common misconception about page views. More comments mean more pageviews but does not mean more traffic.
Each refresh of the page counts as a page view.
Traffic is generally how many IPs visited a site.
In response to your question do 2014 World Cup/Polish MMA Knockout posts get more pageviews/traffic than an NLCS Game 7 recap I would answer no, they do not get more pageviews or traffic.
I would guess the Craig James Boise State Vote post has the most page views of all time and the Colin Cowherd blowing up the site would have the most traffic of all posts.

I’d expect a WS preview tomorrow, not much to say about that ass-kicking last night since every pitcher for STL being bad meant it probably didn’t matter how long Matheny left Lohse in

That picture of Donovan has a definite Stifler vibe to it.

I think you feel ennui. Ennui is in itself, a feeling (of discontent, weariness, etc). To say you are not feeling a form of a feeling is a redundancy, no?

Caig James inists that more page views mean more traffic.

Damn, I’m been referring to that as “the pumkin ales ain’t kickin’ in.”

You can experience ennui. I agree, it’s more of a state of being than a feeling that occurs.

Donovan went from Landycakes to a made man all thanks to that goal vs. Algeria. Respect.
The mother of all executive lunches turned drunkfest/not returning to work sporting events. Also on that list, Tiger/Rocco playoff.

yes thats what I meant, well said ms

and that’d be more a referendum on his career. it’ll never be good enough for most.

I’d like to recycle my thought from twitter. It’d be easier to root for donovan if he wasn’t such a pussy. The man pussied out of Europe. That’s unforgivable.
October 23rd, 2012 at 3:43 PM
For those in the know: A healthy Donovan is still a valuable player, right? Is it possible he’s not healing quicker because he and Klinsmann aren’t on the same page? And that USMNT is downplaying the friction in hopes that Donovan WON’T be healthy for 2014?

From that article:
The fuck?!!!? What kind of athlete talks about focusing on being present? Even the words he uses are pussyrific.

Um, his two Everton stints? Look, by the time the guy was interested in going back to Europe permanently, the Galaxy wanted too much money for him. No one was going to pay 10 million quid to lock up a winger/wide midefielder in his late 20s.

I thought that had less to do with the Galaxy and more with the MLS Commissioner’s Office telling L.A. to ask for an arm and a leg to allow Donovan to transfer.
October 23rd, 2012 at 3:51 PM
He came home crying from Leverkusen. You don’t do that. You stay and fight. You don’t get home sick. You don’t complain about the cold weather. You don’t complain about being away from your family. You just don’t.
October 23rd, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Combination of the two. Donovan’s value as basically the face of US Soccer and the MLS well-outweighed his nominal value as a player in the world marketplace.
October 23rd, 2012 at 3:52 PM
I have no taste for soccer any longer, I can do nothing more except wait for retirement. Things are bad! Things are very bad: I have it, the riches, the Nausea.

I’m not judging him for not moving to Europe permanently over past 6 years or so. Like you said, he’s worth more to Galaxy than to European clubs. But if he just stayed in Europe the first time like countless other American players, we wouldn’t be talking about Galaxy holding him back.
October 23rd, 2012 at 4:19 PM
When he was in Germany, what “countless other Americans” were playing in Europe? JOB? Reyna? Keller? Did he puss out and get homesick? Sure. Believe it or not, shitloads of European kids do that too when they go away to professional clubs for the first time. Trying to say that just because kids today are going abroad and succeeding, so Landon obviously should have too is myopic. It’s not the same situation.
I think Landon would have been a better player if he would have stayed in Europe back in the day, but he didn’t. Stop beating a dead horse. He’ll still be worth taking to the World Cup if he’s healthy.
October 23rd, 2012 at 4:26 PM
Landon signed the last contract when he shouldn’t have if he wanted to go to Europe with out a hassle. Unless there is a small buy out option that the public doesnt know about it seems like it would be a hard deal to make between Everton and MLS
October 23rd, 2012 at 4:27 PM
Listen, good for him finding a career terrorizing top notch MLS defenses. And yes, there are lot of European kids who don’t make it because they can’t mentally adjust to being away from home. They’re pussies too.
