I Couldn’t Have Been More Wrong About Notre Dame This Season.
A few days after Notre Dame’s best defensive player in 2011, freshman Aaron Lynch, transferred to South Florida in April, I wrote this about Brian Kelly and Notre Dame:
“Smells like a 6-6 regular season.”
Freshman superstar and future 1st round lock leaves. Safety Harrison Smith, the glue to a shaky secondary, graduated and was drafted in the 1st round by the Vikings. The Irish had a QB quandary. The schedule was among the toughest in the country, with three games against preseason Top 10 teams (and three more against teams ranked 11-32). And then there was the 3rd year jinx to hit the last three Notre Dame coaches!
I’m thrilled Brian Kelly has proven me wrong. (It’s too bad he couldn’t pulled this off last year; in January 2011 I thought the Irish were BCS-bound. Ahhh, Dayne Crist.)
Which brings us to Notre Dame-Oklahoma, the game of the week in college football.
Does Notre Dame have a shot? The Irish are 10.5 point underdogs, and Bob Stoops, the Oklahoma coach known for a yearly choke, already gagged one up at home this year (to Kansas State). Virtually nobody is giving the Irish a chance. A Notre Dame win (dare to dream!) would vault the Irish into serious BCS title game contention, with only one difficult matchup left on the schedule at USC.
It’s a classic offense (Oklahoma, 5th in scoring at 44.7 ppg) vs. defense (Notre Dame, 2nd in scoring defense at 9.4 ppg) matchup.
Twenty-four years ago, this could have been Jamelle Holieway vs. Tony Rice in a showdown of dueling options.

Somehow they’re having the season Arkansas was supposed to have. I blame Holtz.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Might be worth mentioning OU is 12th in scoring defense, while Notre Dame is 76th in scoring offense.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:46 AM
I’ll happily flip over to MSU/Bama at 7:30 when it’s already 14-0 OU after 30 minutes of this game.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Notre Dame’s D is so good, they might only lose by 4 TDs to ‘Bama in the title game.
/it would be 28-0
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Nah.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Therein lies the problem for Notre Dame. Sooners by 17.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:48 AM
the “te’o is overrated” crowd has never been quieter.
/i should know, i was part of it
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Nice to hear you say that. I think sometimes you’re a bit intransigent on some of your opinions. Then again, I guess if you changed them, you’d be accused of flip-flopping.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:50 AM
Nah.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:50 AM
This team reminds me a lot of that famed 2002 Irish squad that was prone to the eye rake game…hoping they run the table, has there ever been a 17-point line in a national championship game?
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Notre Dame’s secondary could be a major trainwreck against this offense.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Eh, given who OKL has played, that’s not THAT impressive. A good defense, but UTEP/FAMU/Kansas kind of skew the stat.
Fortunately, Notre Dame’s offense against good teams is putrid. I love the under here.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Because Alabama’s offense is so awesome?
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:53 AM
I dont think Notre Dame beats Oklahoma. But it’d be interesting to see what changes in the opinions of the masses if they do- most likely people won’t change their minds about the Irish, they’ll just change their minds about Oklahoma.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:53 AM
The throbbing mancrush on the SEC is a bit uncomfortable.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:53 AM
Who have they beat? Stanford and Michigan smell wildly mediocre, is there anyone else that would justify thinking they have a shot in the BCS picture?
/OU by 21
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:54 AM
If they lose this game and then win out they’re still a lock for a BCS game right?
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:54 AM
Much easier to score when you force the opponent to punt out of their own endzone every possession.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:54 AM
Ding ding ding
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Texas is #6 in scoring offense, KST is #10, Texas Tech is #11.
Highest ranked offense ND has played is Purdue (!) at #49.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:56 AM
I would hope so, they’d have the most wins vs top 25 opponents than anyone else I would think
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Well, it kinda is…they just bludgeon you to death, quietly sitting at 14th in the nation in PPG and that’s with taking a lot of 4th quarters off
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Nebraska was a 17.5 point underdog to FSU in the 1994 Orange Bowl. NU should have won too…
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Depends if it’s a blowout. If they lose and cover, their ranking is unlikely to change.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:57 AM
God I hope Oregon finds a way to keep Bama from winning the title this year.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:58 AM
Fuck the SEC, but ‘Bama is just better than everyone else. Haven’t allowed more than 14 all season, while themselves failing to score 40 only twice, with a low of 33.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:58 AM
Everyone is far too in love with Alabama for them to win the title this year. It just never works that way.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Am I crazy to think Notre Dame/Alabama would be much closer thant Notre Dame/Oregon? The latter would be a disaster I think.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:59 AM
ND is better than expected because their defense has been both good and extremely fortunate.
However, ND is almost as likely to be 4-2 than 6-0. Stanford sent the game into OT, but officials didn’t play fair. BYU, Michigan, and Purdue all had very good chances of winning.
Maybe ND will keep winning by the skin of their teeth. But, their offense is just not good. And that will be ND’s downfall. Their D, especially the young secondary, will get exposed by a team who can actually throw the ball. ND hasn’t played a team that can do that yet. Oklahoma and USC will be able to toss it everywhere, which I think exposes ND’s weak link on defense…
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Landry Jones is still prone to taking huge dumps in big games.
I would flip this and take a look at the defenses their offense has played against.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Isn’t it statistically the best offense in Bama history?
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:00 PM
Yeah the fan of the team that needed OT to beat Purdue should be talking shit about close victories.
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Maybe I misread it but I thought TBL was saying OU’s D being #12 is not impressive because of who they have played. So I looked at their opponents’ offenses. Now I am confused.
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:02 PM
I gotta play dumb on this one, I dont follow the sport that closely and was basing my opinion entirely on last year’s snoozefest of a title game
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Still worried about the secondary as they have not been tested that much this season. They still look a little shaky and a good QB with time can tear them apart. I think the front 7 will have to make the plays in this game to keep it close. Even after all of that ND’s offense will have to score some point which will be tough if they can’t throw the ball
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:03 PM
I agree. Oregon would be up by 35 at halftime.
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:03 PM
Golson’s cleared to play this week, right?
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:03 PM
I think they’ve got a streak going of consectuive 30+ offensive points per game going that broke a school record.
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:04 PM
ND has no QB, lucky to be where they are at.
Nothing more then a good B10 team.
/ND Fan
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:04 PM
@rambo.cts: Agree with all of that. And the defense will probably need to come up with a couple turnovers for them to win.
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:04 PM
Classic fandom move to only view the stats necessary to confirm one opinion, otherwise the echoes might go back to sleep.
I’ve seen OU play, in real life, and I’m confident they’re much, much better than anything ND has faced. They’ll win.
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:05 PM
I don’t think any other ND fans think they’d be able to hang with one of the two or three legit title contenders. But even being in that hypothetical discussion this year is a huge improvement. The program seems to be getting back to it, still a few years out though.
/Kelly fired in two years
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Roll Tide.
That game in Baton Rouge on that Saturday nite is gonna decide if Bama goes to the National Championship. If they turn out like they did for the So. Car game it’s gonna be fockin crazy. You really should pin your hopes on LSU.
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:06 PM

October 23rd, 2012 at 12:07 PM
@ Tim- I haven’t watched Oklahoma much this season do they have a good Off Line? I’m hoping Tuitt and Lewis Moore get a few early hits on the QB
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:08 PM
I’ll wear khakis for a year if they win it.
/No I won’t

October 23rd, 2012 at 12:08 PM
Actually, they have a very, very good offense.

October 23rd, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Well I think Oregon is actually the best team, so..I dunno. I get your point about how Notre Dame matches up with Bama, but I don’t think Notre Dame could beat Bama, just maybe keep it close. I could see Oregon getting blown out by Bama based on the pace they set but I think they could win 5 or 6 times out of 10.
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Oklahoma is going to crush ND Saturday. I’m thinking 14+.
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:11 PM
I could see ND beating KSU and Florida, but no way in hell Oregon or Alabama.
All I want is to beat USC and to win a meaningless BCS game.
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:11 PM
Alabama’s offense is fantastic. Watch what they do to LSU in a few weeks.

October 23rd, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Ill say this about ND: they still feel incredible overrated. Their only decent win is over Stanford, at home, in a game that most concede was heavily influenced by poor officiating that went ND’s way.
If and when Oklahoma blows them out, what do we make of them?
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:14 PM
mole, ND could beat UF because the Gators are a one-dimensional offense. KSU can run and pass the hell out of the ball so ND would have a hard time against them. ND’s defensive backs aren’t all great so Klein would take advantage of that. The guy runs like a beast but he is a damn good passer as well.

October 23rd, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Pretty certain winning more games than if someone else was coaching helps alleviate that.

You misspelled Ohio State
I think he was talking about the State of Oklahoma. And he’s right.
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:18 PM
I thinking the line should have been more around the line OK -6 or 7. The OK -10.5 only confirms what ND-haters across America believe “See, even Vegas know that the Irish are over-rated, they made them 10 pts underdogs!”. The bookies are gonna pull in these people (alot of the public) and of course then the ND homers are gonna take the Irish.
Vegas is laying lines based on public perception, and the perception is the Irish are over-rated. This game will come down the 4th Q, OK will prob win, by ND getting 11 on the road is a gift.
/still making outrageous claims.
//Love PSU +1 over OSU. Wins by double-digits.
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Notre Dame fans are the best at being the worst.
Alabama is very machine-like in their operation. I think they will lose only if they have a major breakdown in a close game. Which pisses me off even more that they got to play in the title game last year after losing “The Game of the Century”.

Are we doing this again? Oklahoma isn’t the south.

you’re going to have to show you’re work on these “mountains” in southern oklahoma.
You won’t confuse them with the Rockies, but they are certainly mountains. It makes about 20 minutes of the drive pleasant, but then you get out of them and there’s just flat, nothingness.
