Monday Night Football: Matt Stafford and Calvin Johnson Try to Get Touchdown Connection Going Against Bears Defense
Matthew Stafford threw 41 touchdown passes last season, with 16 of them going to Calvin Johnson. Through five games this year, that connection is way, way down. Stafford has thrown only four touchdowns thus far, with only one none to Johnson (Johnson’s only touchdown came when Shaun Hill filled in at the end of the Tennessee game). It’s not a matter of yards for Johnson, who is still averaging over 100 per game.
Johnson is just the 10th player to have over 500 receiving yards in the first five games of a season, but one or fewer touchdowns. (Brian Hartline this year is also there). Another Johnson, Keyshawn, went on to record a bizarre 1266 yard, 1 touchdown season with the Bucs in 2001. All he did was not catch touchdowns.
I don’t think Calvin has to worry about that kind of historic touchdown ineptness. Tonight’s matchup is a tough one, though. The Bears have only allowed five touchdown passes versus 13 interceptions so far. If Stafford and Calvin Johnson want a chance at an upset, then they’ll have to begin changing that number tonight.

This obviously is not Staff-Daddy’s fault, Megatron is totally overrated…

I’ll go Bears 35-24. Megatron with a 3 TD night.
/I need a 2 TD night from CJ
//Calling for 3 so that he can disappoint me with 2

If the Bears hold the Lions under 17, I’ll give you a million internet dollars.
Totally good for it, BTW.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:23 PM
I dont think there’s a coach I loathe more than Schwartz.
God I hate that asshat.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:25 PM
Minnesota held Detroit to 13, there only time this year under 17.
I dont think the Bears need to hole the Lions under 17, the Lions can do that themselves.

October 22nd, 2012 at 7:26 PM
Must be nice to be in the NFL North this season, playing the AFC South.
Besides the Texans, the Titans, Colts, and Jaguars are bad.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:27 PM
Dammit!!!
*NFC North
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:28 PM
So close to the correct answer.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:30 PM
If the Lions lose tonight. Season is OVER.
Keys to winning.
1. Win the turnover battle.
2. Pressure Cutler all night long like they did to Vick last week.
3. Stafford plays best game of the season(shouldn’t be that hard, hes been awful for the most part despite some good 4th quarters).
4. Be relatively disciplined.
Bears are the better team obviously. If Stafford wins I’ll stop calling him hillbilly for the foreseeable future. Doubt the Lions can win but I’ll be giddy as hell and annoying as fuck for a couple days.
Fan prediction Lions 34 – Bears 27
Realistic prediction Bears 31 Lions 23

October 22nd, 2012 at 7:32 PM
TBL has the Bears in the NFC Championship.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:33 PM
Any kind of pressure on Cutler will give the Lions a real chance to win tonite. He gets happy feet and make bad throw a lot when he is under duress.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:34 PM
Lions 23-16.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:35 PM
Disagree.
Agree.
Well, that settles that, then.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:39 PM
Lions must win tonite or I agree the season is over.
Green Bay is hitting their stride and a loss in division to the Bears puts them in 4th place at 2-4 and 0-2 in the division.
They have to face Seattle, The Texans, Minnesota again, GB twice, Bears again and the Falcons this season yet.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:40 PM
Lions ML at +230 tonight. Why the fuck not.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:44 PM
They would be 2-4 while the Bears would be 6-1, Minny 5-2, GB 4-3. The best I could possibly see them going would be 7-9. Maybe 8-8 if they pull a huge upset.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:54 PM
I may be wrong but Calvin’s only TD was from Shaun Hill.
Jonte Green is starting at CB tonight… Fuck.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:56 PM
Cowboyfansayswhat?
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:58 PM
I know shitty teams when I sees ‘em. The Cowboys are about 3 degrees below shitty right now.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:58 PM
At 2-4 they’d have a tough climb, but I’m not buying Ponder/Vikings sustaining, and the Packers aren’t looking like a team ready to make a huge run.
However, they have to get healthy/better in the back end. Having Louis D back is a start.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:03 PM
Look at the Vikings remaining schedule. Outside of the TB game next Thursday, they have a shit-ton of seriously lose-able games. Pack with injury issues. Just saying.
Of course, any optimism regarding the Lions is based on them getting their ever-loving shit together, such as it is.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:03 PM
Uhhh…Rodgers is in the middle of scorching the Earth right now. Even with Woodson out, they’ll still demolish the Jags and Cardinals at home, then a bye week.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:04 PM
I dunno, that Cards game seems like one of those GB would spit the bit on.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:05 PM
John Skelton, QB of the Cards. They are completely useless with him.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:06 PM
If the Bills can somehow beat the cards like they did, the packers will violate the cards
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:08 PM
Do you watch football?
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:09 PM
Ok screw the Vikings then.
You still have the Bears and Packers ahead of you.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:10 PM
Vikings are gonna be lucky to go 2-7 the rest of the way.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:11 PM
They could, but their defense seems pretty decent and as long as AP stays healthy they can be in the mix for a playoff spot.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:13 PM
I don’t think they can win a shootout against the Bears or Packers (2x) or the Texans. Playing in Seattle is pretty much a loss. that’s six losses there.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:14 PM
I see about 4 wins for the Vikings yet, that would put them at 9-7.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:15 PM
I got them beating
Tampa Bay
Bears once
Lions
Rams
They dont need to win a shoot out with the Bears. The Packers yes, but not the Bears.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:16 PM
And the Texans game the second last week who knows if the Texans have home field wrapped up and rest some guys for part of that game.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:19 PM
Often. Thanks for asking. Do you understand what “huge run” alludes to?
After their bye, the Packers have: @ Det, @ NYG, Min, Det, @ Chi, Ten, @ Min. They could drop 3 of 4 on the road in that span.
And if the Vikings fade, it’s still possible a third team gets in from the NFCN.
This isn’t likely, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
However, you are a Harbaugh-level dick….
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:21 PM
One loss I see in there, Giants maybe. They are the best team in the North, as much as I hate to say it.
Thanks for the compliment.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:22 PM
Go Bears!
-7!
And Jason Hanson, too! Need 7 points from Hanson to win, 6 ties
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:22 PM
Actually, for a 3rd team to get in from the NFCN, you would need a team NOT in the division to fade.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:25 PM
Sleeper, sorry for coming off as a dick, Im not trying to ruffle any feathers. Bad day at work, sorry if I came off that way.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:29 PM
More than welcome.
And even at 2-4, the Lions wouldn’t be dead considering all the 4-3, 3-3 teams in the NFC. Again, not likely, but not a foregone conclusion. All I’m saying.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:31 PM
No worries, rondoman. Had one of those myself.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:31 PM
Ok I gotcha.
Yeah, they are not dead at 2-4, but it makes things real tough, especially in that division.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:38 PM
Gruden is fucking atrocious. He’s made about 4 or 5 idiotic comments/mistakes so far.
October 22nd, 2012 at 8:42 PM
Breakdown of the Vikings schedule
vs. Tampa – Win, Harvin will annihilate their paper secondary.
@ Seattle – I’m in the guaranteed minority here but they match up really well. Run D always excels against between the tackles guys like Lynch, pass rush will destroy Wilson if he’s even still starting. Final score will be 13-9 or something like that but I give this one a Vikings win.
vs. Detroit – Lions always get their asses kicked in the Dome. Win.
@ Chicago – Conversely, the Vikings always get their asses kicked in Chicago. Loss.
@ Green Bay – It will be closer than you think, but loss.
vs. Chicago – Tough call, total tossup, all depends on who’s healthier.
@ St Louis – Rams are feisty but their run defense is not so good. Plays right into the Vikings hands. Win
@ Houston – Awful matchup on paper but Houston will have home-field wrapped up in the crappy AFC by then and will be playing their backups. Win
vs. Green Bay – Kept it within 6 last year.
Even if you give them losses to the Bears and Packers at the Dome, they still finish 10-6 based on that.
/major, major homerism

Vlad & Sleeper66, who do you want to win the NLCS? I’ kind of leaning toward SF. The Cards would seem too similar to ’06 and look more dangerous IMO.

As another Tiger fan, I really don’t think it matters. Either team is going to be pitching their 3 and 4 guys the first couple games. Assuming JV keeps it up, the worst case scenario for Detroit is 1-1 heading home.

I heard Valverde got hit pretty bad in one of the simulated games (by Miggy and Fielder). I hope our starters are in a position to go deep, because I fear Leyland’s loyalty.
Also, congrats on the W on Saturday. Tough loss that officially ends our season.

From what I’ve heard, they’re going to be targeting the education market big with the iPad Mini (e-reading, classroom), offering bulk discounts if you order 10 or more. Also there’s supposed to be a refresh of some Macs tomorrow along with iTunes 11. The intermediate price is also meant to be a trojan horse to lead non-iOS users into the iOS ecology.
Also Chitwood…give it a break dude, there’s football and baseball tonight. Wait til tomorrow morning.

Chitwood, if you want to bet on who won this debate, there is still ten minutes left on InTrade. Obama up to a 94% chance to win and Romney with a 4% chance to win. You could make a killing by taking Romney if he pulls out a last-minute win. Go for it!

they need some big discounts and very cheap and forgiving replacement policies if they want schools to buy these.

Hilarious. Stephan Logan is terrible, drove me crazy for the 2 years he was on the Steelers. Never makes a big play, usually just screws up.

Such a shame that U.S corporations earned $865 billion last year (highest in history), 30 straight months of private job growth, S&P up almost 80% since 1/20/09, building permits at their highest level since 2006, and the 10-yr treasury is yielding 1.83% (investors are paying the U.S gov’t so that the USG can borrow money).
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:38 PM

October 22nd, 2012 at 10:38 PM
Things are great!
Also, I guess you’re giving the all clear to talk politics now?
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:41 PM
Damn Romney got smoked tonight. I thought he’d struggle with the subject but Obama just seemed so much more in control and educated. Tough task to beat any incumbent but damn, Obama was ON tonight.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:41 PM
Philly, half your points are great, the other half are misleading as shit.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:42 PM
Without a doubt. I thought last debate was bad for Romney. He seemed lost tonite.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:42 PM
Getting better slowly, massive private-sector credit bubbles take a long time to get out of without offsetting public sector fiscal stimulus. Suggest you read some Bernanke when he was the head of the Economics dept at Princeton about this.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:43 PM
Good to see Obama hammer Romney on his endless position changes. Mitt had to abandon all his conservative positions to become electable, but there are consequences to that and Obama made him pay.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:44 PM
MP, what was inaccurate with what he said?
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:44 PM
I didn’t notice any broad disagreements between the candidates on foreign relations matters. It appeared to me that Romney was trying to protect a lead and Obama was trying to make a comeback. Maybe they know something we don’t. And as we’ve all been told time and time again, debates don’t matter anyway.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:44 PM
Which part? Building permits means that construction is expanding. Construction is normalized to be about 12-14% of the economy.
Not sure if everyone remembers 2008, but had TARP not passed and Wells Fargo not bought Wachovia, the US Banking sector would have been fucked.
Everyone claims that “Obama hates business”…so $865 billion in private sector earnings in 2011, the largest ever in history is hating business?
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:45 PM
i was surprised he mimic’d obama’s policies so much. if he wins the election b/c he made himself so similar to obama in the debates i fear for the intelligence of our country to fall for that.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:45 PM

But why use a filabuster if all his ideas are so great?
Remember this line Ohheelyeah?
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:48 PM
Just like Obama got some bad advice in Denver, Romneys people did him a disservice by conning him into thinking America would view him as the frontrunner if he let Obama slap him around for two hours. He’s not winning. He needed to fight in this debate and didn’t get or couldn’t. Either way ,he lost badly
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:48 PM
The old guy brought up drones and I was worried because Romney could bring up all those school children murdered by the American Deceptions in Pakistan. Romney basically said drones are great. It was an both a relief and extremely depressing.
Neither candidate saw the irony in talking about sanctions on South African Apartheid will fellating Israel.
All in your voters (much like Canadian voters) are retards as there are truths that cannot be confronted.
Obama won but Romney did not say anything insulting to potential voters this time.

If I’m running for president, I’d rather look worse on domestic policy than foreign. I think there’s a general understanding that the president can only do so much domestically. But a forgein crisis requires real leadership and tact, and you don’t want to look like an amateur.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:52 PM
Building permits being up is true, but that is a direct result of real estate equity being on the sidelines for 4 years, and they have had to deploy it now (also because rates are cheap and treasuries aren’t paying). It’s been a busy busy year lending, which is good, but building permits being high is not a feather in Obamas cap. It’s a gore-sian point. I just think those point should be explained.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:52 PM

/Desperately hopes to “call it” again
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:52 PM
i do wonder though, if tying yourself to obama this late in the game could backfire if it makes people think why change if they are the same?
especially when the latest polls indicated policies needed to change?

Ok, that was good. Love me some Tombstone.
However, and I dislike both candidates, but Barry is easily going to win. There are too many conservative Christians that will stay away because of the Mormon thing. In the five states that actually matter in this election.
Pay attention to local and statewide elections and whatnot.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:54 PM

October 22nd, 2012 at 10:54 PM
Candidates get elected without a great deal of foreign policy experience all the time. I still think folks will be more concerned with the economy than foreign relations when they enter the voting booth.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:55 PM
the good thing is we should at least know who is going to win once Iowa’s polls close.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:55 PM
Why would you vote for someone different if you’re on the fence and both candidates are similar?
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:56 PM
It’s not private equity or hard money getting into it, its the banks getting into housing projects because they need to expand yield. They’re selling their RMBS to the Treasury, and getting cheap money.
In the past two quarters Citi, Chase, Cap1, Keybank, USBank, Wells Fargo, BB&T, PNC all have had their residential real estate portfolios expand. More money coming in, more permits. QE2/QE3 are working.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:57 PM
KCRes,
There has been a shift in many conservative christians (especially in the Bible Belt) where they’ll vote for Romney just because they won’t vote for obama because he’s a democrat (and many wont vote for him because he’s black, they assume he is muslim, and they think he is a communist)
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:57 PM
that’s what i’m wondering as the possible biggest issue with what transpired tonight
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:58 PM
They’re not similar. Romney is a radical billionaire who hates poor people.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:59 PM
Agree with AP. The Christian right will hold their nose because they hate what Obama symbolizes.
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:59 PM
+1 job shipped overseas
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:59 PM
Because of one’s principles, values, beliefs, etc.. Factors that lead you to believe that neither candidate is good enough or honest enough. Ive never voted for one of the main two candidates since i turned 18 in 2000 because i didnt feel any of them were good enough. Nothing wrong with going for a third option even if its a small party
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:01 PM
Yeah, like I said, I think Romney got some terrible advice. “Agree with everything Obama has done then let him slap you around when you disagree” doesn’t seem like a smart strategy.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:02 PM
i do think it was great Romney felt strongly women in the middle east needed equal rights, that’s more pages for his binders of women.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:02 PM
Woah queefer, do not lump all christians in with the lazy label “Christian right”. The very vocal extreme right-wing christians are the minority of christians in the country. If i had been old enough in 1992, i would have voted for Clinton. Not all christians are right-wing or republican..

AP – I meant that if you’re lukewarm about Obama but question something about Romney, as many do, what did he do to make you do anything but stick with the current guy?
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:02 PM
Private equity has had a ton to do with it, banks barely expand their yields on the types of instruments you mentioned. All of my clients are reits or recently created funds that are pumping equity into retail, office, multinfamily and industrial deals. Home builder lines, which I also do, are still stalled.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:03 PM
I still want to see how Romney’s tax plan doesn’t explode the deficit b/c of across the board 20% tax reductions, decreasing the capital gains taxes and eliminating the estate tax. Only way this works is to get rid of all of the EICs, Child tax credits, Mortgage interest deductions and pretty much every other tax deduction. Oh and raising the taxes on the lower end.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:03 PM

dont blame me, I voted for Kodos
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:04 PM
AP, didn’t mean to do that. I was referring to the group you mentioned that would avoid Romney because of his mormonism. I think the desire to get Obama out overrides even religious issues.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:05 PM
Ok. Seems like I’m the only one left discussing the 6/18 of sports that this site promises, so I’m out.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:06 PM
I hate those guys
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:06 PM
So queefer, its better to stick with the status quo even if its average at best? Not saying that person should vote for romney..vote for whoever they want. Its just sad that this country has sunk to the level that it can only truly be a choice between 2 people. Terrible process
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:06 PM
The building permits (865k in Sept.) are only residential, which are being funded by the big banks. Hence my comment before about the major banks getting back into this in a bad way. The average yield on multifamily & 1-4 residential has gone up 45bp and 18bp respectively in the past quarter.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:07 PM
Queefer, there is a site that posts pictures and videos of terrible, legit church signs. Ive seen a ton this year that say “vote for the mormon, not the muslim”
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:08 PM
Chitwood is a good egg compared to ImJustSayin. IJS just starts shit and leaves.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:09 PM
it’s not perfect, but we need an independently wealthy third party candidate that’s well known nationally who can use their own personal funding to keep themselves in the conversation up to the conventions before they even decide to bring in their coffers of funding.
he’s also known as michael bloomberg.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:10 PM
People should vote for whoever they want. All I’m saying is for that people on the fence need a push to vote for the challenger if they perceive both to be close. In short, Romney needed to give them a reason to switch. Not sure he did that.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:10 PM

TBL also picked England to win Euro 2012, remember.
Never forget. Gotta be different. And now I do this…
Why would you vote for someone different if you’re on the fence and both candidates are similar?
I’m not on any fence. However, to answer your question, if a candidate gets 5% of the national vote, the party platform they are on will get federal matching funds in the next election. Although, I think it was the Reform Party (Perot’s) that accomplished that. And then that part nominated Pat Robertson. So, fail everywhere since no 3rd party will get 5%.
There has been a shift in many conservative christians (especially in the Bible Belt) where they’ll vote for Romney just because they won’t vote for obama because he’s a democrat (and many wont vote for him because he’s black, they assume he is muslim, and they think he is a communist AP
I didn’t watch the debate. I did notice a few of my ultra-conservative christian friends back Romney on my FB feed tonight. Small sample size and whatnot, but holy shit these are Kansas christian conservatives that hated Romney in the fall/winter/spring during the primaries. They just hate half black Muslims I guess. I may be underestimating how the anti-Mormon primary vote has changed.
I still stand by this. Obama wins easily.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:10 PM

We track building permits on all asset classes, not just single family. My buddies at wells and citi are still re margining and generally sour on rmbs, but high on cmbs and conduit debt. I guess that’s why I am not getting your comments.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:12 PM
I got nothing against 3rd party candidates or those who choose to vote for them, but they have absolutely no chance of winning. None.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:13 PM
The other two parties wont allow a viable third party to emerge.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:13 PM
I explained my fence post (hardy har) poorly. Wasn’t criticizing anyone here. Just a question for the masses.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:13 PM
Chitwood, thats what i hate: they have no chance even though they might have better philosophies than the main party candidates. Its all about money and media support, IMO

he’s got too much money to do it. he’ll run at some point as an independent. good chance of winning, too. i’d seriously look at him if unless there’s a dynamic shift in either party.

October 22nd, 2012 at 11:19 PM
If a third party candidate had better ideas they’d gain traction in the early primaries. It’s tempting to believe that it’s the system keeping their brilliant ideas from catching on – and in some ways that’s true – but Gary Johnson and company had opportunities and never made a blip.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:20 PM
dude’s got the money that matters and knows a lot of people with a lot of money to finance him. don’t discount him.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:21 PM
Queefer read my link. Gop and Dems definitely have say to which parties compete. It would take a ton for a viable third party to emerge.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:22 PM
what song was that in the Sonos commercial?
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:22 PM
The same Michael Bloomburg who pushed a policy into action where NYC police can stop and frisk anyone walking on the street they deem to be suspicious. I posted a link last week to a video of a guy in NYC who secretly recorded on his ipod an altercation where cops stopped him, frisked him, threatened to break his arm and cause many other injuries, and accused him of having something (despite the bookbag being empty). Why? The kid turned and looked at the cop car because they kept following him. He was stopped two blocks before by another cop and hassled again.
Bloomberg can eat a bag of grenades
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:22 PM
or you’ll need two strong candidates in one party and they go 3rd party after the other wins their nomination.
that would be one hell of a show, essentially destroying one chance of a party gaining the presidency to prove a point the system is broken.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:24 PM

Kaiser cant believe youd consider ever voting for that fuckhead Bloomberg.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:26 PM
Yeah the problem is that whichever party is more closely aligned to the third part candidate will torpedo any real chance he/she has because the vote split would doom the party. HW Bush hates Perot to this day because he thinks Perot cost him reelection. And he’s probably not wrong.
October 22nd, 2012 at 11:27 PM
