Bill Snyder Backed Out of a Kansas State-Oregon Game Two Years Ago, a Cunning Move That Looks Brilliant Right Now
Kansas State hammered West Virginia Saturday night in Morgantown, 55-14, and in the process, leapfrogged Oregon in the BCS Standings. Kansas State is 7-0, and has passed its first two challenging road tests of the year (also a win over Oklahoma). There is only one left: at TCU November 10th.
The Horned Frogs, though, are a mess – their QB is in rehab, and they’ve lost two of three without him. Kansas State almost certainly will be favored in the rest of its games. KSU is a 7.5 point favorite against Texas Tech this weekend in Manhattan.
So, is Kansas State headed to the National title game? Of the four teams atop the BCS, the Wildcats have the easiest schedule. There’s no Big 12 title game in the way. Alabama still has to travel to LSU and likely will play Florida in the SEC title game. Notre Dame still has to visit Oklahoma and USC.
And then there’s Oregon, which had a laughable non-conference schedule, and has a backloaded Pac-12 slate: at USC November 3rd, vs. Stanford Nov. 17th and at Oregon State Nov. 24th … followed by the Pac-12 title game, which probably will involve another game against USC.
Why is Kansas State in such a great spot? The greatness of Heisman leader Collin Klein and brilliant 73-year-old coach Bill Snyder, obviously. But also because of something that happened in 2010: The Wildcats decided to cancel a home-and-home series with Oregon. KSU was going to visit the Ducks in 2011, then host Chip Kelly’s powerhouse in 2012. So what happened? Here’s what the Register-Guard wrote in September:
By 2010, Bill Snyder was looking ahead to his second season after returning to Kansas State; with a reputation for avoiding powerhouse nonconference opponents, Snyder and the Wildcats soon backed out of their game at Oregon.
Wise move, Snyder. Are the Wildcats unbeaten today if they had to play Oregon instead of Missouri State or North Texas? Probably not.
Here’s a likely scenario for the BCS: Alabama wins out. Oregon loses once. Notre Dame loses once. The “other” unbeatens (Oregon State, Ohio, Mississippi State) all lose a game.* Would any of the 1-loss teams vault Kansas State? KSU’s BCS rating won’t go up much the rest of the way due to the weak schedule.
* The Ohio State Buckeyes are unbeaten, but ineligible for the BCS title game.

Damn it. I had a $100 that Duffy would post this.
October 22nd, 2012 at 12:57 PM
After watching them, how this is possible is beyond me.
October 22nd, 2012 at 12:57 PM
lol, what? Of course not.

This whole post was basically a Fuck You to Spencer.

He’s out today. Back tomorrow.
October 22nd, 2012 at 12:58 PM
agreed…they’ve been explosive in bursts, but that defense…WOOF. this defense is ohio state’s? really?

BIG TEN! BIG TEN! BIG TEN!
I keep seeing writers say the Badgers have kept improving as the season’s gone on, I maintain starting conference play eased up the competition…Oregon State and Utah State still might be the best two teams they’ve faced
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:00 PM
wayne fontes…and it’s been possible because the two best teams they played have been michigan state and nebraska. hardly a murderer’s row.
/then again, purdue has always given OSU fits beyond possible explanation so im not really that concerned
//esp since this year’s a wash anyways
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:02 PM
Fuck K-State.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:03 PM
The LB core is Shazier and a converted FB…… D has been better. Still get burned by fucking bubble screens. Stupid Fickell.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:04 PM
stupid secondary that can’t tackle for shit.
bad sign that curtis grant aint getting more PT. or if he is, that he’s invisible out there.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:04 PM
The fact that Wisconsin still has a great shot at going to Pasadena speaks volumes about the conference.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:05 PM
Texas Tech is better than anyone left on Oregon’s schedule. Smart move by Snyder to prepare for the beastliest conference slate in foosball.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:05 PM
KSU would kill Oregon in Manhattan. Explaining their success as a result of being lucky recovering fumbles in a post last week is still funny. They physically beat the piss out of WVa.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:06 PM
I will never understand this phenomena. Also, Happy Valley is reeeeeally getting jazzed for next weekend’s game.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:07 PM
5 star bust! Hopefully he can turn it around next year. Perkins got hurt. Maybe Marcus and Williams can get some more PT. Storm Klein should be eliminated. Urban needs to close on Mitchell, Booker, Garret, MacMillian for 13 and 14. Or flip Jaylon Smith.

They already have a 2.5 game lead just to make the Conf. Title game.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:10 PM
The Horned Frogs, though, are a mess – their QB is in rehab, and they’ve lost two of three without him.
They also just put up 53 points on the 4th ranked defense in the country and they did so with a redshirt freshman at QB.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:11 PM
gary patterson thinks this is bullshit.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Didn’t know JUCO’s could make the BCS title game and the way Snyder runs that program it’s nothing more than a glorified JUCO.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:12 PM
I don’t think so. The only team right now that can beat Oregon is Alabama. They’re just on another level right now.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:14 PM
If Florida loses to Bama in the SEC title game and it’s their first loss, I’m not really sure how you can leave them out of this hypothetical. Seems they’d have the best chance of getting back in there especially because if they go that far unbeaten they’ll have a higher ranking going in anyhow.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:14 PM

I propose a drinking game for when TCU is on TV. Drink every time Gary Patterson has to stop what he is doing to take off his visor, headset and glasses in order to wipe the ridiculous amount of sweat he accumulates on his face. Take a shot every time he bends over to retie his shoes.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Come on man. 1/3 of those points came in OT
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:17 PM
Holy shit Texas is ranked?
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:17 PM
And be passed out by halftime.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:18 PM
Im not sure why any BCS conference semi-power would ever play a tough non conference game. You have a far better chance being left out of the title game because you have a loss than because your nonconference schedule is weaker than two other major-conference unbeatens
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:19 PM
Of course this is going to be a slam on K-State, but I don’t blame them for this. Once Nebraska and Colorado left the Big 12 said they would go to a full round robin. That’s when K-state dropped Oregon. What incentive is there for K-State to play Miami, Oregon, some cupcake and 9 conference games? Snyder didn’t know this team would be this good this fast. That’s feeding an inexperienced team to slaughter. That would be dumb.
Tey played Miami. Their schedule would be loaded with Oregon. It’s unneccessary. WVU did the same thing and dropped FSU.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:19 PM
That’s my point. Play a good game in six weeks against whoever wins this weeks Michigan/Nebraska game, (sorry Iowa) and they’re in.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:19 PM
Come on man. 1/3 of those points came in OT
So they don’t count for as much? Fine take out their 17 OT points and they put up 36. That’s still fairly impressive.

I was watching this game, I think he does this to calm himself down so he doesn’t have a heart attack, every time something bad happened he would bend down and tie his shoes…that being said: FUCK Gary Patterson
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:20 PM
Also I love that nobody has mentioned Rutgers. I don’t mean that sarcastically, I just love that even when Ohio gets a shoutout nobody takes Rutgers seriously.
Suck a dick Rutgers.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:21 PM
we could do this with a bunch of teams/coaches.
if we drank everytime oklahoma’s entire fucking offense looks to the sideline to get their hand held, we’d all die of alcohol poisoning by the 2nd quarter.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Bill Snyder’s a necromancer.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:23 PM
When the point is they performed well against a good defense, of course OT points don’t count for as much as regulation points. I agree with your main point though and think putting up 36 is impressive.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:23 PM
Pure Michigan.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:25 PM

What actually is even more impressive is that Tommy Tuberville has taken a program in which defense was nearly an afterthought into one that was, prior to last weekend, ranked 4th in the country.

why hello julie banovic.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:27 PM
The Maryland/NC State game had the most Edsall ending possible. Terps burned some freshman QBs redshirt in the last 30 seconds of a game they trailed by two with the ball on their own 20. Against all possible odds he leads the team into chip-shot FG range with five seconds left. With the ball centered right between the hashes the kicker boots it off the post to lose.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:30 PM
You think Oregon would win in Manhattan. Fair enough. I’m more curious about what the spread would be, hypothetically.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:32 PM
Looking down the road, is this something the BCS PLayoff Committee could take into account when comparing 2 or 3 teams.
Team A plays 3 AQ teams, goes 2-1.
Team B play 3 non-AQ teams and goes 3-0.
Team C plays 1 AQ and 2 non-AQ (replaced a 2nd AQ with non-AQ) goes 3-0.
Who gets the nod?
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Miami sucks.

/deflated
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Not the team that didn’t have the balls to show up.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:42 PM
KSU would kill Oregon in Manhattan.
KC – you’re normally one of the better commenters here … Are you on dope?
Comparing WV and Oregon (which I think is what you’re kinda doing here) is not where I’d go here. WV is not as complete a team as the Ducks. I think Oregon – KSU would be a good game, but kill? Not likely.
But, I’m still curious what happens if Oregon and bama meet for the champ game. I’m guessing Oregon learned a bit when they lost to Auburn (big D line and solid overall defense) and would approach the game against a similar defense differently.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:43 PM
I expect Oregon would be a 2 or 3 pt fav.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:45 PM
I’m sold on Oregon and think they have the best shot to make it to Title game outside of Alabama.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:51 PM
Late to the party here. After this upcoming weekend, OHio State will no longer be ranked. PSU will beat them by 2 TDs. Write it down.
/has a habit of making outrageous claims
//still stands by it.
//35-20…OSU has no pass DEF,
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:52 PM
*sorry, didnt mean to say OSU would no longer ranked, meant to say unbeaten.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:58 PM
as an ohio state fan, im about as scared of penn state as i am of northwestern.
October 22nd, 2012 at 2:05 PM
PSU passing game is going to tear through OSU. Classy Saint Urb has already said his concussed QB is going to play. He will not make it through the game with the hits he takes.
October 22nd, 2012 at 2:06 PM
good thing penn state sucks or they might actually have a shot at winning.
October 22nd, 2012 at 2:14 PM
If Penn State just runs bubble screens, OSU is in trouble. If they don’t, OSU’s pass rush will get there.
October 22nd, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Guess they are hosting a shitload of recruits this weekend. Hopefully McGloin doesnt crap the bed like so many previous shitty qbs and their penchant for pick 6′s against OSU.
October 22nd, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Well, that’s a facile excuse.
