Yeah, still not the same thing unless the coaching staff supported it and they were paying out for injuring the opponent…still think in hindsight there should have been punishments but the current landscape of the NFL makes it silly to compare eras and claim hypocrisy (but I know that won’t stop the Saint Fan Victim Complex)

Sooo, Goodell targeted the Saints just because….? Was the pressure to do something about player safety that high for him to find ‘scapegoats’?

So far it’s looking that way. He thought he’d show he was getting tough on CTE and other brain-health issues to fight against the incoming legal war against the retired vets. He needed an example and the Saints gave him one.

But so far, little of what the NFL claimed meshes with what’s been accepted. Outside of Cerullo’s and Williams’ late affidavits, everyone else disagrees with the NFL’s position.

Pretty much how I expected it to turn out without the particulars of bringing in Tagliabue, a lawyer, in play. They’ll greatly reduce or do away with the suspensions without Goodell being directly involved, thus saving some face.

What was the final straw here?

You got Jimmy Kennedy’s statement as well as the revelation of the NFL-approved “Smash for Cash” program Reggie White was running in the mid-90s as well as Vilma’s ongoing legal charge. Combine all those and there you go.

Really, Goodell thought he was going to be able to bully his way through this like he does when some DB gets caught with pot or when James Harrison suits up. Guessing he never expected Vilma and the Saints to fight back.
