Roger Goodell to Recuse Himself From the Bounty Gate Investigation
DeMaurice Smith, NFLPA Executive Director, has just tweeted out that he received formal notification from Roger Goodell that he will recuse himself, and that former commissioner Paul Tagliabue will take over in regard to the Bounty Gate appeal hearings. Jonathan Vilma asked that Goodell do the same thing a few weeks ago, after the suspensions were re-instated across the board after a judge had overturned them.
What was the final straw here? Jimmy Kennedy released a statement through the NFLPA basically calling Goodell a liar, so maybe that was the final nail to drive this. Regardless, it’s a massive public move for someone who to this point has operated as judge, jury, appellate judge and executioner, even if the net effect is not great. Tagliabue will now step in for the hearings for Vilma, Fujita, Hargrove and Smith on October 30th.
Here is the text of Roger Goodell’s statement (via Pro Football Talk):
“I have held two hearings to date,” Commissioner Goodell said, “and have modified the discipline in several respects based on my recent meetings with the players. To bring this matter to a prompt and fair conclusion, I have appointed former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue to serve as the hearing officer for the upcoming appeals. Paul Tagliabue is a genuine football authority whose tenure as commissioner was marked by his thorough and judicious approach to all matters. He has many years of experience in NFL collective bargaining matters and an impeccable reputation for integrity.
“To be clear, I have not consulted with Paul Tagliabue at any point about the Saints matter nor has he been any part of the process. Furthermore, under our process the hearing officer has full authority and complete independence to decide the appeal and determine any procedural issues regarding the hearings. I will have no role in the upcoming hearings or in Mr. Tagliabue’s decisions.”

He’s gotta be terrified about Vilma’s federal court lawsuit moving into discovery and opening up the NFL’s vault of secrets.
What was the final straw here?
You got Jimmy Kennedy’s statement as well as the revelation of the NFL-approved “Smash for Cash” program Reggie White was running in the mid-90s as well as Vilma’s ongoing legal charge. Combine all those and there you go.
Really, Goodell thought he was going to be able to bully his way through this like he does when some DB gets caught with pot or when James Harrison suits up. Guessing he never expected Vilma and the Saints to fight back.
Bullies never do.

That pack of thugs are really grasping for straws. Don’t expect Tagliabue to rule any differently.
Next line of defense for Vilma: Race card.

Pretty much how I expected it to turn out without the particulars of bringing in Tagliabue, a lawyer, in play. They’ll greatly reduce or do away with the suspensions without Goodell being directly involved, thus saving some face.

Sooo, Goodell targeted the Saints just because….? Was the pressure to do something about player safety that high for him to find ‘scapegoats’?

So far it’s looking that way. He thought he’d show he was getting tough on CTE and other brain-health issues to fight against the incoming legal war against the retired vets. He needed an example and the Saints gave him one.
But so far, little of what the NFL claimed meshes with what’s been accepted. Outside of Cerullo’s and Williams’ late affidavits, everyone else disagrees with the NFL’s position.

I guess even when you’re grasping, you will occasionally choose the right straw.

Goodell has been camel-clutched on this one Iron Sheik style. He’s finally tapped out. Fuck you Rog.

Yeah, still not the same thing unless the coaching staff supported it and they were paying out for injuring the opponent…still think in hindsight there should have been punishments but the current landscape of the NFL makes it silly to compare eras and claim hypocrisy (but I know that won’t stop the Saint Fan Victim Complex)
