Penn State Cheerleader Paige Raque Falls Five Stories Out of a Window, in Critical Condition

Terrible news out of State College, from the Associated Press:

Authorities said she fell 39 feet to the parking lot below at the Calder Commons building in downtown State College overnight Saturday.
State College police have said the fall appears to have been accidental but an investigation will continue.
Penn State’s gymnastics coach Randy Jepson is acting as a spokeswoman for the woman’s family. He said Raque suffered a traumatic brain injury and her family is at her side.
Raque is a 2011 graduate of Christian Academy of Louisville in Kentucky. Her brother, Parker Raque, is a Penn State gymnastics team captain and student.

dude i knew in college fell out of a window, was leaning against a screen, screen pops out, and he fell 30 feet. he lived but wasn’t in great shape after that.

I’m surprised this sort of thing doesn’t happen more often in college towns, to be honest. Lots of newer high rise apartments have balconies, and those don’t mix too well with drunk kids. I specifically remember a friends building in Madison that was about 12 stories… the railings on the balcony barely came up to this taller guys waist (it must have been minimum code)… It was so bad that I never went out there when I was drinking or he had a party… didn’t want some out of control drunk guy stumbling into me and sending me plunging to my death.
But yes, Very sad. What a year for PSU. Remember this time last year when JoePa was still the head coach?

thanks miz, I’m sure you’re right. Anyways.. it seemed significantly shorter than most of the other balconies I’ve been on… and enough to make me leery of going out there. But I’m a pussy who’s kind of afraid of heights.

This is why I hated those old wooden balcony/stair combos in Chicago. You know those things were built as cheaply as possible and replaced way too infrequently. Especially after seeing the episode of E.R. where one collapsed.

Same reason I always check to make sure that a crashing helicopter is not about to fall on my head when I’m walking out of the E.R.

There was a kid my age who fell off a house balcony (2nd story), landed wrong, and ended up in a coma… this all happened within a week of him moving to college… guy never attended a class. Kind of wonder what happened to him.

I saw a man fall from his death from second story balcony when I was 6 years old. I wish I was making this up. His head first hit a wall that was directly underneath the balcony and then splat. I was shaking for solid 8-10 hours after seeing this.

some how, a girl i graduated with from high school, fell out of the window of the dorms in Ann Arbor freshman. i think poeople were dicking around and dropped her. these were chalisie(sp?) style windows, and i cannot figure out how someone would accidentally fall through.

At LSU, I lived one year in a 14-story dorm, and the windows were welded shut because a few years earlier some idiot jumped out of one and splatted in the parking lot. Having windows you couldn’t open was a bitch in hot weather.
