Mike Holmgren Out Within 24 Hours of Browns Sale Becoming Official, Pat Shurmur Could Follow Shortly
Mike Holmgren was rumored to be in trouble with the sale of the Browns, with rumors swirling since the news was announced that Jimmy Haslam was buying the team. Last week, we talked about how this could be an ugly season for decision makers and Holmgren topped the list. (I know Holmgren is technically president and not GM, but he is the key figure here).
According to Ed Werder of ESPN, now that the sale of the Browns has been approved as final, Haslam will announce former Eagles President Joe Banner as the new person in charge, removing Holmgren.
The Browns won their first game on Sunday, but it wasn’t a short term result that could change the situation. You have to wonder how long they keep Pat Shurmur, as he is a clear lame duck now. The Browns have three games until the bye week (at Indianapolis, San Diego, and Baltimore) and if they don’t show fight short term with Shurmur, he may just get released early.
The other issue is Brandon Weeden. He’s 29 years old as a rookie, and was Holmgren’s selection. The results have been mixed so far. He certainly hasn’t been helped by a receiving group that struggles, and has had up and down performances. Will Banner and the new regime want to move forward with him? The rest of the year is probably most important for Weeden, who can convince them that he can be part of the solution, rather than a part of the problem.

Matt Millen rubs peanut butter on his cock, whistles for the family Pomeranian, and stares at the phone.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
So do they draft Barkley or Geno Smith?
October 16th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
once they fire Shurmur, that new owner might look for some other West Coast offense Guru to be his new head coach.
A mustachioed, out of work guy who has had past success, has more than once been promoted above his pay grade, and is currently out of work.
He may not want to work for the organization, though.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
So do they draft Barkley or Geno Smith?
they should play the pick ransom game, because I’m not sure about either of those two guys either, although I’d rather have Smith, based on what I’ve seen on tape when I was evaluating him.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
Geno – they like them some soft Big XII QB’s in CLE.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
I really hope Cleveland picks Smith so they continue to act as two free division wins for the Ravens.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
based on what I’ve seen on tape when I was evaluating him.
So, you saying you casually watched some of one game?
October 16th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
Chargers trade Rivers to Cleveland for the number one overall, Barkley stays in SoCal.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
So, you saying you casually watched some of one game?
my twitter handle, @nfldraftevaluationexpert says otherwise. It says I’m an expert.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
the browns are going to win the super bowl next year. mark it.
/say it every year…
October 16th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
So let it be written, so let it be done.
Sir, you are a visionary.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
If not, what could they do with him or possibly get in exchange for him? Who wants a 29 year old rookie?
October 16th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
George Seifert.
/hi Weinke!
October 16th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
not, what could they do with him or possibly get in exchange for him? Who wants a 29 year old rookie?
Well, look at the upside. Next year he won’t be a 30 year old rookie.
It’s how you sell him.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
If not, what could they do with him or possibly get in exchange for him? Who wants a 29 year old rookie?
His deal is ultra, ultra cheap for a backup QB. So they’d probably keep him, and hope not to have to use him. I don’t know what they could get for him, 4th rounder maybe.
He can’t be a developmental QB, obviously, so he’s really not a candidate to be anybody’s 3rd QB, at least to my reckoning.

Jermichael Finley for Weeden straight up.
/half-serious
October 16th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
If Weeden can play some ILB they need to make this move today
October 16th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
So basically Justin Blackmon helped Brandon Weeden steal a lot of money is what you’re all telling me.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
you guys want to see a funny image of a “genius” coach? Warning, it’s Dallas Cowboys related.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
During last night’s game, Tirico just casually dropped some serious knowledge on me. Did you guys know that Rivers has SIX kids? Also, he is very religious. I had no idea.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
So basically Justin Blackmon helped Brandon Weeden steal a lot of money is what you’re all telling me.
it’s really not that much money. The entirety of his deal is a little more than 8 million dollars, and only 7.5 million of that is guaranteed. And that’s over 4 years.
For a QB you might have to demote, that’s perfectly fine. The trouble comes in where he was picked. He was a terrible 22nd pick, despite the favorable $$, because he could have been picked much lower, as in pick #40. And while I”m making that up completely, nobody else was picking him.
But they’d already traded all of the picks they wanted to trade up with to get from 4 to 3, because they panicked. Then, they panicked again because they didn’t have those picks to trade anymore, so they took him way, way early.
That whole front office deserved to be fired for bungling a draft where they had 13 picks.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
In return Justin Blackmon has his car insured under Weeden’s plan to take advantage of his much lower age rate.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
During last night’s game, Tirico just casually dropped some serious knowledge on me. Did you guys know that Rivers has SIX kids? Also, he is very religious. I had no idea.
I knew all of that, but I have a head for minutiae, and plenty of time, as I produce nothing.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
So in addition to being a draft evaluation expert, you’re also an NFL front office expert. Although I should’ve known that from your Twitter handle, @NFLFrontOfficeExpert
October 16th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Yup. Every opposing TE left on the schedule should be good for a couple scores and hundred yards receiving. DJ was a huge loss.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
You have to wonder how long they keep Pat Shurmur, as he is a clear lame duck now.
So the new president who has a former working relationship with the current GM, makes the head coach a CLEAR lame duck? Lisk, that’s a dogshit leap and you know it. So you’re saying 100% he’s fired? I don’t see it that way.
50/50 presently. A lot depends on how this season ends.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
So in addition to being a draft evaluation expert, you’re also an NFL front office expert. Although I should’ve known that from your Twitter handle, @NFLFrontOfficeExpert
well, not exactly. I aggregated that prior comment. I just stick to drafts.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
he had 2-3 when he was drafted.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
when Shurmur gets shitcanned will he have to return that sweatshirt?
October 16th, 2012 at 1:00 PM
Did you guys know that Rivers has SIX kids?
Dang, I knew he had four a few years ago. If he’s any kind of a decent father, his career will only suffer terribly. This all makes sense now.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:00 PM
He can tell by his sanctimonious arrogance.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:00 PM
Is the Pomeranian named Mayhew?
October 16th, 2012 at 1:00 PM
when Shurmur gets shitcanned will he have to return that sweatshirt?
JH3 will just take it out of his settlement.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
yeah, he was married with children at NCSU. ESPN had a nice puff piece about it back in the day.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
Holmgren is retiring at the end of the year. Hard to know the motivator – if it was the new owner pushing him out, you would have expected a swifter exit. Maybe Holmgren preemptively saw the writing on the wall and announced his plans.
Peter King had nice write-up yesterday about the nurturing coaching way of Shurmur with this young team. Maybe ownership sticks it out a bit with what he’s got.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
Sandusky.
/much older than him in dog years
October 16th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
when Shurmur gets shitcanned will he have to return that sweatshirt?
Pat Shurmur just looks like he should be on an early 80′s softball team.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
i don’t understand why Nike put that black bar on all those shirts. it looks like someone took electrical tape and used it to cover up the team name.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
The Browns don’t seem like they’re TOO far away. They have some legit pieces. As in, they have players other teams would actually want for once. It’s just outside of those 4-5 guys, they’re horrible.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Is “lame duck” status a soccer term like “vote of confidence”? I am not sure if I am interpreting this properly.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
The biggest takeaway from the last Dolphin’s game is that potty mouth is down team wide 26%.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
You’re now an honorary one of us.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
Jim Donovan, the radio voice of the Browns confirmed Holmgren is out immediately.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
I’d do the Jay Cutler trade for Joe Thomas. Meaning, two first and a third if they want to part with him. Spencer might go Milton though.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:10 PM
It’s just outside of those 4-5 guys, they’re horrible.
Actually they still need a few more high end guys and just some experience. One more pass-rushing DE, a quality CB opposite Haden, 1 more impact WR. Eventually a coverage safety. Depth isn’t too bad.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Cutler belongs on the Bears. Until the bitter end. I’m fired up for the twilight years when a 4 INT home game starts a near riot.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
I’d do the Jay Cutler trade for Joe Thomas. Meaning, two first and a third if they want to part with him.
Never go full-retard.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
I’ve only watched them twice this year but I think they need a lot more than that. They need a speed compliment for Richardson, they need a big red zone target, they need a veteran WR with good hands who can go get first downs, plus all the defensive stuff.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
have there been serious discussion yet on how Grossman at least took the bears to the super bowl while cutler can’t do it?
October 16th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Thanks for clarifying, Scripty. Early twitter chatter is where I got the end-of-year thingy.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
You’re saying they need a 3rd-down speed back and veteran WR are agreed. Obognaya has shown promise as the former. The latter is really a free agent move when the time is right.
For defensive, they have 4 quality interior lineman, 1 good DE in Sheard. A young fast LB core, 1 good CB and 1 good safety.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
I’m not parting with a franchise QB. Just the parts it took to get him here to get another franchise player. Pure hypothetical that have less than a 1% chance of happening. Unless the Browns hire AJ Smith after the Chargers fire him.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
what happened to johnny knox?
October 16th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
I think they keep Shurmur at least until year end, and if he can win 3-4 more games, probably for next year as well.
As for Weeden, if you exclude his first game against Philly, he has been completely mediocre, which is fine with me as a rookie QB. He has the arm to make every throw, has made some terrible decisions, but on the whole I think he can be a starter for 5-6 years. Browns need a veteran WR, maybe a stud at guard and a handful of DBs but the core of the team is as promising as anything they have had since ’99.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
this happened to knox scripty
still ain’t right
October 16th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
The Browns could also benefit possibly from a veteran OG with speed. But the few guys out there that fit the bill wouldnt even have CLE on their radar until the Browns plug a few of the aforementioned goals. The roster construction, while not perfect, does have a plan. Shurmur needs to improve as a game-day coach, he needs to demand less big errors from his special teams units (which should happen when the special teams players become older and more experienced), and Weeden needs to continue to progress. That bomb Weeden through to Gordon was into the wind.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
This. Weeden has been relatively acceptable, especially considering the number of drops that he’s been plagued with.
The DL is more the adequate. In fact, if Taylor comes back from PUP in the next 3 weeks, they will have a nasty front line. They are missing OLB’s and a couple secondary pieces from having a better than good defense.
Offensively, it’s O-line and attempt to find a top line WR and a slot guy (although Cooper may be that guy).
They aren’t that far away, seriously.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Nowadays in baseball there’s a ton of focus on run differential. The Browns are 10th in the AFC in point differential. You may be right.

October 16th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
Wally, Sheard is terrible against the run. I think he rated 30th in starting RDE against the run. I’ve watched him struggle at the point of attack. He might just be a rotation guy. First round pick this year has to be a DE or CB.
October 16th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Diehard Browns fan here who has watched every game this year – I am telling you Weeden is good with a chance to be very very good. As others’ note, if you exclude the first game he has been solid: QB rating of 83, averaging 280 yards per game 60% completions, 7 TDs, 6 INTs against some pretty good teams. For a rookie, this is impressive. Its especially impressive that he gets better each week. And, in terms of the ol’ “eye test” the dude has a cannon, and has made a number of elite throws already. Once he trims down on the mistakes I think it will be clear he is the real deal.
