Juan Castillo Fired as Eagles Head to Bye Week; Andy Reid Next?
Juan Castillo, the former offensive line coach promoted to defensive coordinator before last season, has been fired as the Eagles head to the bye week. This was a move that had long been clamored for, but is an interesting move considering the issues plaguing the Eagles. The defense started very poorly last year, then rebounded to actually be an above average unit by season’s end. They solved some of their linebacking issues. The defense had largely done a credible job this year, but did surrender a lead, and 449 yards, to Detroit.
The last straw may have been Nnamdi Asomugha’s comments after the game on Sunday, criticizing some of the defensive decisions at the end of the game.
Or the last straw may be that the Eagles are 31st in the league in scoring through six games (and 13th in points allowed). This move is a bailing water move by Andy Reid, who has had an offense that cannot stop turning the ball over, and cannot score points. Look at this smoke over here, while we try to keep you from watching the brush fire on my side of the ball.
Andy Reid is at the end of his line if the Eagles don’t make the postseason, I have little doubt. Last year, he survived a rough start as the team surged late to get to 8-8. In the competitive Eastern Division, I don’t think ownership can sell another season of moving backwards. Fourteen years is a really long tenure in the NFL in one spot, especially for a coach who has not won a Super Bowl. As I talked about in regard to Jeff Fisher leaving Tennessee two years ago, no coach, even legends, has gone longer than eleven years with the same organization without a Super Bowl appearance. This is year nine after the one appearance.
Make no mistake, right now, the Eagles are in trouble at 3-3. The NFC is the loaded conference this year, so it will probably take 10 wins to make the postseason. Another 8-8 year would leave them looking up again. Right now, they have been outscored by 22 points, and do not look capable of going 7 for 10.

Just because this happens to be true doesn’t mean this firing didn’t need to happen.
October 16th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
It’s a last gasp move by a coach who knows his time is almost up. Clock’s at 11:58:45pm for Andy Reid.
The schedule is going to dictate what happens to Reid: 2x Cowboys, 2x Redskins, Falcons (off the bye), Saints, Bengals, Giants. I think Lurie (and the fanbase) is ready to move on.
October 16th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Norv Turner next, I think.

“Juan Castillo Fired as Eagles Head to Bye Week; Andy Reid Next?”
why, can andy reid be a DC?
October 16th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
PLEASE FIRE ANDY REED!!!
/so he can coach in cleveland
October 16th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
No, Rob Ryan would be better, so we can hit the trifecta of fat arrogant fuckhead Ryans bombing out as head coaches.
October 16th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
What? You’re not enjoying Andy Reid protege Pat Shurmur?

you listening, lovie?

Norv is definitely gone as well this season. That game last night sealed it. Well Rivers too.
October 16th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
pat shurmur is closer to a mazda protege than he is to an andy reid protege.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Reid can come replace Scott Linehan. Matt Stafford has yet to throw a TD in the first 3 quarters of ANY GAME. Also hasn’t throw a TD to Calvin Johnson yet. Shaun Hill did though.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Sorry, SC, I thought you were predicting Norv would be the next Eagles coach, not the next coach fired.
I still stand by what I said about Rob Ryan, though.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Norv is definitely gone as well this season. That game last night sealed it. Well Rivers too.
I’ve killed off Norv as much as anyone, so I won’t go predicting what should and should not seal his fate.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
No, the only way Chargers coaches can get fired is if they go 14-2. Going 8-8 or worse gets you a contract extension.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Some thoughtful stuff on the Twitters this morning. This was the only move that had an obvious upgrade on staff in Bowles. Also, the defense is freaking loaded and has surrendered two late fourth quarter leads in a row. 2011 was a disaster defensively.
Castillo was always incompetent, which is ultimately on Reid for this stupid hire.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
He was on Andy Reid’s coaching staff for 9 years. No one could get crullers from Dunkin Donuts like Pat Shurmur.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Always turmoil with the Eagles. Yet, Reid is still undefeated for his career after a bye. And when they stomp the Falcons in two weeks the narrative will take another sharp turn.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
I mentioned on twitter that, considering how long Castillo was with Reid (i.e.–Castillo’s employment with the Eagles actually pre-dates Reid), I’m surprised this was an outright firing and not a “reassignment within the organization”.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
No doubt, who knows what AJ will do. Probably give Norv a contract extension.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:04 AM

October 16th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
Anyone know the record of Reid’s underlings in the NFL?
BTW, this is likely just a temporary reprieve for Reid. Come the end of the season, he, Vick and everything else will likely be detonated.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
FalCONS also coming off a bye as well. Not gonna be as easy as usual. Even with how good the secondary has been, not sure we can defend Julio/White/Gonzalez. And Gonzalez has killed the Eagles historically.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Yeah, long time friends. Had to be tough. But I’m not sure how that could work for a lot of reasons. Whatever players still bought in to his coaching would probably be lost.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Reid gets fired, Sir Norval gets fired in SD, and Reid becomes the HC in San Diego with a better QB than Vick. Norv goes back to being the OC in Dallas.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Juan Castillo sounds like the name of some random utility infielder on the Arizona Diamondbacks.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
I really don’t think there’s any fanbase that hates their coach as much as the Eagles fanbase does. Maybe the Cowboys.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
I’ve killed off Norv as much as anyone, so I won’t go predicting what should and should not seal his fate.
No doubt, who knows what AJ will do. Probably give Norv a contract extension.
Smith likes to feel like the powerful god inside. He keeps Norv cause he’s a willing underling who’ll never challenge his position.
“Trade Darren Sproles away? Sure, go ahead, AJ.”
“Bring in Takeo Spikes? I thought he was fossil–you’re right, I’m sorry. Great move, AJ.”
“Your nuts in my mouth? But you know I have a peanut allergy, AJ.”

What a weird week in NFL coaching. Mike Tomlin is definitely breathing a huge sigh of relief after his horrendous showing Thursday night.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
Kind of an interesting twist that the Falcons have a bye this week too. Judging by my husband’s complaints, aren’t about half of the Eagles games this year against teams coming off of byes?
October 16th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Steelers, Lions and Falcons all coming off the bye, all in a row.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Andy Reid and Norv, the Rasputins of hot seats.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
This will be the third in a row.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
BTW, is this the current list of expected firings that are certain to happen at season’s end?
Jets – Mike Tannenbaum (possibly Rex Ryan too)
Chiefs – Scott Pioli, Romeo Crennel
Eagles – Andy Reid
Chargers – Norv Turner
Cowboys – Jason Garrett
Browns – Pat Shurmur
October 16th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
Mike Vick – coach killa.
/here’s the wind-up and the pitch….
October 16th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
I do agree that if the Eagles don’t make the playoffs Reid will be gone (and I have no problem with that).
But you shouldn’t have to look far to understand why he’d have a job in no-time. Even in these “down years”, he’s 17-5 against the NFC East in the last 3+ years and that record after a bye.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
I don’t see how anyone could for certain say Norv is getting fired given how many times we have said Norv is for certain getting fired. Somehow he’ll get another extension.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
Fire up the Gruden/Cowher rumor machine. I hope someone hires Mike Tice.

Like Christmas come early. Except for the QB part. After last night, I’m ready to see Rivers head out of town. But, not for the Charlie Whitehurst era…
“QB wanted: West Coast team in dire need of new field general. Prime attributes wanted are poise/ability to perform under pressure. Ability to accurately throw three-quarters to overhand desired. Ability to consistently perform at a high level without unnecessary babble a must. Abnormally hard-cadence shouters need not apply.”
October 16th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Some NFL owner should crowd source Gruden’s new contract. You’d raise millions from fans who want him off their TVs.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
If I was a team with a shitty offense, and I even asked Spencer his opinion since he’s got a PhD in watching one, I would want AJ to fire Norv so bad so that I could hire him as an offensive coordinator. Before Jim Harbaugh, only Norv Turner could make Alex Smith look good. He’d be a great hire as an OC somewhere in the league.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
Bring back Jarrett Lee.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
Where is Stan Humphries when you need him?
October 16th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
He looked good in preseason (I know). Could be a better pro than collegian…”in the right system, with the right opportunity”.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
well, the eagles will probably get someone like norv turner when they fire Reid. or Rob Ryan.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:34 AM

Back in Monroe, gettin’ fat on corn dogs and apple fritters.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
There are lots of folks in Philly that would love nothing more than to have one of the Ryan brothers coaching here. Buddy Ryan’s name still rings out positively here….especially amongst the WIP set.
I think, if Reid does go, the coaching hire will be GM Howie Roseman’s first real, visible stamp on the organization.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
I want a defensive minded coach…would love Mike Zimmer along with an up and coming OC.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
great spot for gruden, philly guys
sorry, this philly guys
October 16th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Phillip Rivers is so fiery…………………. and so overrated. He has benefited from being outside of the glare of the “mainstream media”.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Whoever in Philly gave Mick Vick 100 million needs to go. Reid, GM, whoever, everyone. Washed up turnover machine, his athleticism isn’t what it used to be but he plays the same.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
That would be no one.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Nobody gave him 100 million, that contract is very easy to get out of.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
I hope someone hires Mike Tice.
this would definitely be my favorite hire of all time. He would definitely walk out of the interview thinking he nailed it, because even when he wasn’t sure, he just nodded his meathead.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
Whoever in Philly gave Mick Vick 100 million needs to go
why do people persist with this fiction? Nobody gave Mike Vick 100 million, nor did they give him a 100 million dollar contract.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Without a doubt. If he was ever on tv, or played for a team that matters, or had a winning record, or won a few playoff games, people would hate him.
So it will just end up being 40 million for 2 bad seasons. My mistake, you’re right, that was a great deal.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Nobody gave him 100 million, that contract is very easy to get out of.
if he played more than half the offensive snaps in any of the first five years, the last year went away anyway. Year 6 is 25 million straight salary, and it was utterly imaginary, and now it’s gone.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
So it will just end up being 40 million for 2 bad seasons. My mistake, you’re right, that was a great deal.
they paid him the going rate for a good/very good quarterback. They definitely aren’t getting that return. But continuing to scream about his 100 million dollar contract makes you sound as stupid as Coop is gay.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
Just stop.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
You want to make the argument that playing in San Diego has him under the same level of spotlight as playing QB for the Pats, NY teams, Eagles, Bears, etc.? He has benefitted from not receiving the level of scrutiny over his career from playing in San Diego. Some people still consider him an elite QB.
