Dirk Nowitzki Hoping to Delay Knee Surgery 8 Months Or So
The NFL season is in full swing, so you might have forgotten that the NBA’s regular season starts in two weeks. With such a short amount of time until games begin to matter, this is not the time of the year when fans want to hear that their team’s star player is having health issues. Unfortunately for Dallas Mavericks’ fans, Dirk Nowitzki’s knee is not being cool. From ESPN:
“I’m doing everything I can not to have surgery,” Nowitzki said Monday after sitting out a second consecutive preseason game due to the knee. “I guess that’s obvious that I really don’t want it done now. If I want to do it, I would love to do it after the season, get through the season somehow, but the swelling came back three or four times now. That’s obviously not good news.
No, that is not good news. Dirk first had trouble with the knee early last season, but he eventually got healthy.
“If it’s going to keep swelling up on me, that’s obviously not a way to go throughout an 82-game season and hopefully long playoff run.”
In fact, I would say that if his knee keeps swelling up he will not go through an 82-game season and there will definitely not be a long playoff run.
“We’re going to see if it gets any better these next couple of days before we do another decision,” Nowitzki said. “That’s really the only update we’ve got. There’s a little swelling in there. It makes no sense at this point of the preseason to play on a swollen knee, so we decided to see what’s going to happen here in the next couple of days.”
If Dirk’s injury persists, who will the Mavs turn to? Elton Brand, O.J. Mayo and Chris Kaman all signed during the offseason, but this remains a Dirk-centric team in an always-deep Western Conference. It could be a long season in Dallas. [ESPN]

I wish the NBA season still started at Christmas.

According to the linked ESPN story, he’d be out 3-6 weeks. If he and the medical staff don’t have an answer soon, he should just go for it. He’ll be back by Christmas, when the NBA starts to get rolling.

Recovery time is 3-6 weeks. I don’t understand why he just won’t have the surgery. At most, he will miss a month’s action. I think Dallas can tread water for that amount of time. But the main issue is that Dallas has no shot at competing for a title in next 2-3 years. I understand what Cuban was trying to do when he let Terry and Chandler walk in hope of luring other free agents. But now that’s backfired, what do they do? The fact that Cuban was shooting a fucking tv show when they were recruiting Deron isn’t a good look for him.

50 game season starting in December. That would be awesome.

Why didn’t the jackass have the surgery two months ago?
October 16th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
He came into last season out of shape, and spent the summer doing nothing knowing his fat ass would need surgery. Can’t skate on that one ring forever.

Can’t skate on that one ring forever.
he can in germany

That picture looks like Dirk is auditioning for membership in the Van Buren Boys or something.

Lin is a clown.

He came to camp out of shape last year. That’s irrefutable. He even admitted that. But what proof do you have that he did nothing this off-season knowing that he would need surgery?

How does that prove that he ignored the problem this off-season? In fact, it said that knee wasn’t an issue after he sat out for a while. And He’s been in camp for a while and played overseas for a few games and practices without knee being an issue. It’s recently popped up over last few days. The guy is 34 years old. It’d be weird if his body didn’t start to break down. Look at Kobe and all his health problem over past 3 years.

I liked this quote re Lin and Melo more:
October 16th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
I like that quote to. It seems like “source close to the team” sure has been around. Does he have a chance to make the Knicks roster?
October 16th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
He still has more rings than “Top 5″ has or will have.
October 16th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
everybody has a chance to make that roster, especially if they qualify for AARP
October 16th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Kobe also had knee surgery during the offseason a few years ago when his knees were giving him problems. Dirk came in last season out of shape. His knees were bothering him early in the season. He took off 4 games in the middle of the season for “conditioning” and didn’t miss any more after that. He had his least productive season since his second season in the League. He returns to camp this year. His knee hurts like last year. Now he’s talking about surgery. Seems like his knee has been bothering him throughout.

So, no proof? Got it, thanks.
October 16th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
Funny how much older KG became in that Miami series once Chris Bosh returned. At least the Knicks AARP contingent will be coming off the bench for spot duty, unlike KG and Pierce. Enjoy second place in the Division.
October 16th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
He’s talking about having surgery on a knee that bothered him last year when his productivity suffered. Ask someone to borrow a clue, and you’ll find the proof.
October 16th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
So does Bill Wennington, who acutally does have rings as opposed to a ring. What’s your point?
October 16th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
to the Nets? sure. No chance Knicks finish first.
and hey, I just like busting your balls on the Knicks. But really, it’s not a good roster. I don’t think you can rely on Felton and Kidd. I also will believe Carmelo’s a changed man once we see it on the court
October 16th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
Amare is already complaining of knee pain and Melo is essentially refusing to play the 4 so if you think Camby/Thomas aren’t playing big minutes, you aren’t paying attention. And there isn’t a chance in hell Felton’s fat ass can get up and down the floor more than 3 or 4 times a game so Kidd is going to have to play. Or are you a big Pablo Prigioni fan?
October 16th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
Agreed that winning isn’t best way to measure a player’s individual success.
October 16th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
You’re not paying attention. Felton was in better shape in the early summer than he was at any point last season. His conditioning at this point isn’t an issue. All 3 of the options at PG this year are better than any option the Knicks had last season. Melo stated a preference of not playing the 4, he didn’t state a refusal. Throwing in the word “essentially” doesn’t make your statement any less accurate.
October 16th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Well you’ve certainly bought what they are selling over at MSG. Good luck this year.
October 16th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
The Knicks need the same Melo who put the Knicks on his back last year at the end of the season, they don’t need a changed one. That one, with a healthy squad, is good enough to make a run in the East(the longer they can avoid Miami).
October 16th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
A long season that could build for the future better than they’d expected though. Shut Dirk down, tank the season and take a lottery pick to go along with the plethora of cap room I believe they have next year. The team they’d put out there would surely be better than this year’s and build for years to come.
