NFL regular season feels more important simply because its shorter, both in number of games and length of time. All in all it really isn’t that important however.

Still worried about Cutler making it out of Week 7 without the brown brain. The game being at home is a plus but the Bears seem to struggle in primetime against teams that aren’t Dallas. Shady McCoy had by far his worst game of the season. Vick completed two long passes, one of which was six yards and taken like 70 from Maclin (on a blown DB assignment). The rest he threw was underneath because he had zero time. The Lions DL was great yesterday.

I don’t dislike LaMichael James as a player. But a 2nd round pick for a speed freak is a poor pick. These guys almost rarely can stay healthy for a full season. This is more of a 4th-5th round value pick and it’s not suprising he can’t stay on the field. See Trung Canidate. I get that for a team that made the conference title game it’s a luxury pick but there is a cost related to it.

NDub, point is, every D-Line looks great against the Eagles. Combination of Eagles terrible O-line, mind-boggling playcalling (7-step drops and deep routes, over and over), and Vick.
Agree they shut down McCoy, but much of that was his usage as well. 14 carries, a full third of which were in short yardage situations.

Me too. Amazing what a lost hockey season and a bad (sorry, MSU folk) college football team will do for one’s interest in college hoops. Coach Fran plays an exciting brand of ball. The B1G is one of the better conferences in college hoops so I figure going 8-8 or 7-9 in conference should get the Hawkeyes into the dance for the first time since 2005.

My thought process started from the idea that nothing is predictive in the NFL any more. Going 15-1 in the regular season doesn’t matter. Homefield advantage doesn’t matter. Starting the season poorly doesn’t matter.
Just be fortunate enough to get in the 12-team playoffs and take it from there.

I do this too, though with 8-12 people in my house every week. The NFL is awesome as a social event. You can see friends without ditching your family. Two televisions, lots of food. It’s fantastic.

I would also wager that those who comment multiple times a day helped draw greater than 20% of the traffic to the site. I know that before I started commenting I was reading the comments as much if not more than the posts. Even when it doesn’t turn into arguing and insults the comments are a good read. You can generally get good info out of them when a post leads to people analyzing data or at least throwing up good links.

Think you’re 1) really overestimating the draw of the comments to a media-conglomerate owned site and 2) drastically underestimating the total traffic here.
I like the comments here as much as anyone who fucking hate their job but I would guess Jason could disable comments forever and not see a meaningful drop in traffic. Most people are clicking through the articles, not to comments.

The way I see it, beating the dregs of the league by an average of 23 points… if you’re a good team, you’re supposed to do that. They can’t control that they haven’t played a good team yet. I don’t see what’s so crazy about thinking the Bears would be competitive with the Niners or Texans because they looked impressive so far this year.
It’s one thing to merely beat crappy teams, but the Jags and Rams didn’t have a prayer, and they dominated Dallas in the 2nd half. You wouldn’t take the Bears to beat the Falcons right now?

This is true but the overwhelming amount of page views come from the comments (refreshing the page) and certainly help with the important metric of time spent on the site. Soused

The building of and maintenance of community does matter to a website such as this, though. Much less so now than early on to be sure, but it still matters.

They can’t control that they haven’t played a good team yet. I don’t see what’s so crazy about thinking the Bears would be competitive with the Niners or Texans because they looked impressive so far this year.
It’s one thing to merely beat crappy teams, but the Jags and Rams didn’t have a prayer, and they dominated Dallas in the 2nd half. You wouldn’t take the Bears to beat the Falcons right now?
first off, the falcons are not in the same category as the giants, niners, texans, packers, pats…so yes bears over falcons, but not the others. even seattle is scary.
also, yes, you;d be less confident if the bears struggled with the bad teams (like 3-0 in the first half against jax) but i just don’t think it matters how badly you beat them once you play a ‘good’ team. different personnel, different matchups. if you can make an argument other than ‘that’s what they’re supposed to do’ or ‘it builds confidence’, i’d love to read it

I’d agree that commenting is a small fraction of the views. THey wouldn’t put up 30+ posts in an effort to get just 200 comments. If you’re coming on the weekend for comments you just need to poke in the recent comments and try to get people to stay in one thread or ask. Conversely, I get it’s not cool to get belittled.

Have to be allies though while takes work/money. The new structure of great people in Gods and Kings makes me play a whole different way. Not being able to start golden ages with anyone except great artists is hard to get used to, I hate using great generals in the new way. Great having the spies back though, that’s awesome.

Point differential is one of the better predictors for future success in sports (the 2010 Packers winning the SB shouldn’t have come as a surprise as they led the NFC in the category that season), blowing teams out means you’re good…only the two Giants champs seem to buck this trend

Would be an interesting experiment. Have Jason print the actual # of unique visitors with commenting on over a 1 week period. Turn off commenting for 2 weeks and then report the #s of unique views over that 2 week period. I know what I think would happen to his page view numbers. And if he hasn’t turned off commenting yet, with as much the writers seem to despise us, I think he agrees with me.

butters, i’m no stats guy. i believe they are great, i’m just not into them. but it makes no sense to me that beating a crappy team by a lot means anything once you come up against a good team. the bears, led by a shaky but all-world talented qb, do not inspire confidence even with added talent. it’s all about the o-line still

Not true, each refresh is a page view. How many times have you refreshed this page? The only reason to refresh the page is to see the comments.
/Again though the vast majority of traffic is non-commentators. Traffic, unique visitors and page views are all different metrics. Ask Rex.

I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how this place works. They’ve all but killed soccer coverage (Fuck, Yes!) unless it involves tits of a WAG and McIntyre has repeatedly mentioned how nobody clicked on the old golf posts except for some guy in Ohio.
