So who’s the best team in the “lig” (as Simmons would say) right now? I’ve got the Giants edging out da Bears. Either of those teams (and a couple others) can beat the Falcons.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:35 AM
Skins are dropping 40 on the Giants next week, but may give up 45.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:35 AM
Well Gooooooood Morniiiiiiiiiiing Kate!
October 15th, 2012 at 8:36 AM
Kate!!!
October 15th, 2012 at 8:39 AM
That’s French for “The Michael”.
/You’re welcome
October 15th, 2012 at 8:40 AM
Monster sports weekend in Detroit! Went to a wedding Saturday night and they rolled out a 60″ TV to watch the Tigers
October 15th, 2012 at 8:40 AM
AFC East is a cluster of mediocrity. hard to believe my Bills are still in it after how horrible they looked in losing the two weeks prior to this past one.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:40 AM
The article mentions how recruits and their families will stay at coaches’ houses. Does that actually happen? I can see hosting parties, dinners and whatever, but I certainly didn’t think recruits or their families would stay at the coaches’ houses.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:41 AM
Yep, modern NFL. You can sleep through the first three months and it doesn’t really matter.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:42 AM
On the other hand, Ryan Fitzpatrick is still your QB and you’re fucked.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:42 AM
Well, duh.
Most pitchers are sensitive, introverted creatures seeking external affirmation (i.e., umpires calling strikes on pitches just off the plate).
Stands to reason that negative stimuli would directly influence an immediate degradation in real-time performance.
/puffs on pipe
//not that kind of pipe
October 15th, 2012 at 8:43 AM
Those wins over : IND, STL, JAX, and DAL, don’t mean shit to me.
They have their tough part of the schedule coming up in the second half of the season, starting week 10: HOU, @SF, MIN, SEA, @MIN, GB.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
Tigers win three times
Lions win in OT
Michigan wins, State loses, Indiana hangs almost 1/2 a century on Ohio.
Great weekend….
October 15th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
Really? Now we have to cover how Junior-High athletes cope with tragedy? Can’t they just live thier 14th year on earth in peace? Oh…it’s a HS junior…
October 15th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
Entire AFC is one big cluster of mediocre 2 and 3 win teams. Baltimore is in trouble with RayRay and Lard Webb gone. Texans are well, the Texans (in other words frauds). Going to be one or two 8-9 win AFC teams in the playoffs.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:45 AM
I guess time will tell. I love Winn’s stuff.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
So, exactly like the regular season of any professional sport? NFL regular season still matters a hell of a lot more than say, NHL or NBA’s
October 15th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
FLBP!!!
October 15th, 2012 at 8:47 AM
Not exactly sure how but I will fuck up FIFA you corrupt motherfuckers.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:49 AM
Now THAT is a top-notch roundup pic.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:49 AM
Maybe. In the era of barely .500 teams making and winning the Super Bowl, are you sure about that?
October 15th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
outgoing AD’s & coaches should just sell to their incoming replacements….I know the Aldens did that in Columbia when he came to Mizzou….can’t remember if the Pinkels did as well….
October 15th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
Tip of the day: Don’t slap a cop.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
Approve of Kate a lot.
Great weekend of baseball and football…except the Eagles losing. That just pissed me off.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:52 AM
Well, I think I’ve seen ~10 polls so far, and other than the poll where you put them at 25, I haven’t seen them lower than 12. I actually think #25 is the laughable position, but time will tell.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:52 AM
NFL regular season feels more important simply because its shorter, both in number of games and length of time. All in all it really isn’t that important however.
Now college football regular season is important, but luckily the know it all finger wagging internet bullies have made sure that wont be the case much longer.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
NC State at #3??? I’m a State fan, but all this positive press is making me really nervous. Lots of strengths, but some questions that need to be answered too.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
Agreed.
Now the NBA, that’s a sport where even the preseason matters as demonstrated by the coverage on this blog.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:56 AM
i dunno…this one time, my dog chewed up the corners of a coffee table. now that’s a how you tell a story.

October 15th, 2012 at 8:58 AM
every week, the Cowboys find a new way to kick me in the balls
there are so many things wrong with that team (sans QB) that it will take two decades to fix
October 15th, 2012 at 8:59 AM
I hate this argument. Their average margin of victory is 23 points. They soundly beat all those teams like a contender should. They didn’t barely escape like Atlanta did against shitty teams like Carolina and Oakland.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:59 AM
but they’ll never be able to take away the $900k in penis-on payments he received.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:00 AM
Yes, compared to endless meaningless games with barely 3000 people in the stands. I’m not saying that doesn’t happen in the NFL but it happens far less often, ratio-wise.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:00 AM
I understand the outrage regarding Jerry Sandusy’s crimes and all, but what if somebody has 30+ years and gets convicted of something like involuntary mansluaghter in a traffic accident. Can they then lose their pension going forward?
October 15th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
wake me when you celebrate a win over the bengals like it’s the super bowl and then we’ll talk about getting kicked in the balls.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
Ray Lewis looked about as fast as Bernie Kosar so far this year. Him being out probably isn’t the worst thing.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
@spence, I saw that article over the weekend and loved it.
I just read the linked article, not much there, but the key is that he is no longer receiving a pension because of his conviction, but he won’t have to repay what he’s already collected, which makes sense to me.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:02 AM
and 4 SB winners since 2006 have been WC teams.

October 15th, 2012 at 9:04 AM
yea, i cant really think of a reason he’d have to return it in the first place.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:04 AM
So I suggested the redhead from Serenity for TBL’s Roundup today. Boy, I was THRILLED to be shunned this morning.
Seriously, TBL, your Roundup photo selection has improved TEN FOLD in recent weeks.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:05 AM
it is when there’s still no guarantee that Suggs will definitely be back and losing one of your best DB’s puts even more pressure on the defensive front 7 to stuff the run and guard against the pass.
it’s not like Ed Reed is the bastion of health on that defense, either. an injury to him would be serious trouble.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:06 AM
A quick Google search of weatherman and penis brings up Bill Ayers images.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:07 AM
ironic since i call my penis “the weatherman.”
October 15th, 2012 at 9:07 AM
Yea, it wasn’t like he received the pension under false pretenses…in addition to his nefarious activities, he actually DID coach football and do what was required to earn the pension.
/First and only time I’ll ever say anything defending that evil man
October 15th, 2012 at 9:07 AM
What would’ve been the legal basis for taking the pension away?
October 15th, 2012 at 9:08 AM
kate’s bewbs are just so glorious. i want to touch them.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:08 AM
Because, OUTRAGE
October 15th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
Really cool read on how tough it can be for college football coaches to sell their house when they take a new job
Poor coaches. I feel so sorry for them.
NC State at #3??? I’m a State fan, but all this positive press is making me really nervous.
Other than the AP college football poll, there is nothing more meaningless than any college hoops rankings. Don’t worry. Have fun. College hoops is right around the corner.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
Not really comparing the NFL to other sports. I watch games every week because it is awesome television. But if you are actually just interested in figuring out who your champion will be, might as well wait to December. September and October rarely mean anything anymore.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
so the giants are en route to another 6-2 start. then they will falter, and recover to make the playoffs.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
he did earn those bonuses for child rape, too, so he might as well keep those. the school just didn’t anticipate him hitting all those accelerators as quickly as he did.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
i feel like going back to dunkin donuts and giving the indian girl who made my coffee a hug, it’s so fucking good right now.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
or they are 14-2 with a first round bye and lay a stinker since their back isn’t to the wall and go one and done.
/fingers crossed
October 15th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
Tee hee. At least the videographer oriented the display properly.
Can anyone answer this for me? You’re drunk in public, probably unarmed. You encounter a cop, who probably has training in subduing humans & is also armed. And probably sober.
So, it makes sense to hit the cop?
October 15th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
what is it with the giants and ridiculous facemasks? STOP THAT SHIT. YOU’RE NOT ROBOCOP.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
Curry coffee?
October 15th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
T Suggs will be back in 2 or 3 weeks but it’s a fucking mess. This is a really young D and the young guys(A Jones,Kruger,McPhee,Cody,Upshaw,Kindle) just aren’t ready to play Ravens caliber D. In the 4th Q our CB’s were Corey Fucking Graham and Chylkie Brown. Thankfully after Houston runs for 300 yds against us we get Cle and Oak.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
Or they get a bye and lose at home to a 9-7 Wild Card team (Vikings? Vikings.)
October 15th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
what did she do, secretly use 100% Kona coffee in place of the day old dunkin donuts grind they always serve?
October 15th, 2012 at 9:14 AM

October 15th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
Not the season to be making this point about the NFL what with the Tigers on their way to the World Series after 5 months of blah play
October 15th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
But they didn’t cover. Slackers stopped playing D in the last 5 minutes.
/Nice win for the Bayou Bengals

I even see nobodys in college doing the same thing. Some guy on the friggin Gophers has a Justin Tuck type mask.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:15 AM
i’ve seen that one play out just a few years ago.
/fuck you, plax
October 15th, 2012 at 9:17 AM
You’re laughable.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:18 AM
Really poor job by the SC offensive line, and incredible job by the LSU offensive line. That right there was what decided the ballgame.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:18 AM
Indeed, Butters, why I started that paragraph with “Not really comparing the NFL to other sports.”
I’m just saying the reason to watch the NFL isn’t because every week matters so much. We all watch because it’s awesome television.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
i watch because it gets better ratings than that failing MLB league
October 15th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
I disagree. If the Packers lose last night, they would’ve had to go 8-3 the rest of the way just to get to 9-7. Kind of a big deal.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:21 AM
Maybe you should, first topic could be if the Tigers could field an NFL-ready offensive line
(Because they’re all fat you see)
October 15th, 2012 at 9:21 AM
I watch so I can come here on Mondays to discuss and pretend like I have friends.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:21 AM
I wondered where he was at, haven’t heard too much about him. Wouldn’t be surprised to see 49ers trade him away in the future.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:22 AM
Whoops, I had their record wrong. 7-3 the rest of the way
October 15th, 2012 at 9:22 AM
Also, Bobby Cannavale hanging some serious dong last night.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:23 AM
The urgency they played with last night was slightly annoying in that if they’d come out like in the second half in Indy they’re sitting pretty right now…would rather not have any part of the NFC Wild Card jumble, thinking some 10-6 team is getting left out
October 15th, 2012 at 9:23 AM
Nobody reads the posts. Sorry, CRM.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:24 AM
I dunno, I can see why guys are doing it, trying to keep OFF linemen’s hands/fingers from getting inside your facemaask. More and more hands to the face calls, just trying to protect their face i guess
October 15th, 2012 at 9:24 AM
Did we just become best friends? You wanna go do kung-fu in the garage?
And are the Texans not allowed to have one clunker? It’s not like Green Bay is terrible on offense. The knock against Houston should be that they only put up 17 points against what has been a porous defense for about a season and a half now. The Texans lost to a good team that really only has one bad loss, a loss that occurred the week prior. Had to expect the Pack to come out firing after putting up a poor showing in Indy.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:24 AM
I love how Jim Schwartz insists the Lions are “fine” after starting 2-3. Stafford has looked awful, they average a shitload of penalties a week and their defensive line is as overrated as it gets. They are far from “fine.”
October 15th, 2012 at 9:25 AM
Not a bad looking shoe, actually.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:26 AM
I get that you’re not supposed to hit a cop and you should expect some strong retaliation for doing so. But damn that’s a lot of face shots by a weapon from that cop. Christ.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:27 AM
the Giants need to put Michael Strahan on the payroll. Anytime he comes and talks with the d-line, they have a huge game
October 15th, 2012 at 9:27 AM
Look at it the other way. That they had like 16 penalties and Stafford looked like poop for much of the game and they still won.
Also, that defensive line is overrated? Not to sound like a dick, but did you watch yesterday? Mike Vick almost died on the field. That guy has probably taken six ice baths since 5 p.m. yesterday.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:28 AM
Lets go have a drag with Jay Cutler then rifle a ball into quadruple coverage.
The way they lost was pretty telling. They couldn’t get Foster going against a mediocre run defense missing BJ Raji, and they had some really REALLY bad penalties.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:28 AM
Article surprisingly makes no mention that he played quite well in preseason, but kept getting nagging injuries. Guy will eventually make an impact in the NFL, I am quite convinced of that.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:29 AM
And no Arkansas, not even as an honorable mention. They’re making the tourney this year.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:29 AM
Still worried about Cutler making it out of Week 7 without the brown brain. The game being at home is a plus but the Bears seem to struggle in primetime against teams that aren’t Dallas. It’s a really big game for Detroit too. 2-4 puts them in a bind going forward. 3-3 and dropping Chicago to 4-2 has them sitting pretty.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:30 AM
You realize you’re saying Foster is a fraud, right?
October 15th, 2012 at 9:30 AM
Philly out-pooped them.
That’s true. It’s worth noting that Vick gets murdered every single week though.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:30 AM
Yeah but this happens to him every week now
October 15th, 2012 at 9:31 AM
I was thinking the same thing. Fine, get a couple shots with the baton, but then don’t you have to subdue and arrest the guy? Cop just kept beating him.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:32 AM
Which is to say the Lions D-Line is no better or worse than every team the Eagles have played.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:33 AM
I was thinking the same thing. Fine, get a couple shots with the baton, but then don’t you have to subdue and arrest the guy? Cop just kept beating him.
Cop was probably pissed he had to be on duty, otherwise he’d actually be out drinking with all these yahoos.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:33 AM
To become a cop is to betray the people.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:33 AM
That pic of Kate Upton helps me understand why she went for a guy that looks like Verlander.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:34 AM
Seems like the rest of their schedule is filled with teams that could rough him up (and Carolina)…that back-to-back with Houston and the Niners should be fun, and beware Seattle
October 15th, 2012 at 9:35 AM
While I agree Murda is a little slow these days he’s still the straw that stirs the purple drank. He gets guys up for a thursday nighter in The Clev.
And its not like Ed Reed is making it through the season either.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:35 AM
The way they lost was pretty telling. They couldn’t get Foster going against a mediocre run defense missing BJ Raji
You realize you’re saying Foster is a fraud, right?
I feel is more of a choker than fraud.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:35 AM
Shady McCoy had by far his worst game of the season. Vick completed two long passes, one of which was six yards and taken like 70 from Maclin (on a blown DB assignment). The rest he threw was underneath because he had zero time. The Lions DL was great yesterday.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:36 AM
Are you saying that Verlander is one of the most attractive, successful, charismatic men ever? Because otherwise you are just being really catty.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:37 AM
Ed Reed getting the stiffarm yesterday from Felix Jones was probably a low point in his illustrious career.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:37 AM
Steelers and Ravens defenses are getting by strictly on reputation at this point. That division is not good.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
I was just doing my morning cruise around the internet. Is Shamburger working for Drudge now?
October 15th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
I love Jason Hanson, by the way. Almost as much as I love Justin Verlander. But I don’t love Justin Verlander as much as Kate Upton. But I do really love Kate Upton.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
i love how they posited the discussion of gyp being a wild animal and then using the autoerotic asphyxiation as a metaphor for a leash. and the last scene serving as the metaphorical “he’s off his leash now.”
can’t wait for the next few ep’s.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
Relax, we all have a part to play here, and SG is just doing her job.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
I couldn’t figure out who the kid that shot everyone was. I know I’ve seen him before, was he the guy who delivers coffee to the whorehouse?
October 15th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
I don’t dislike LaMichael James as a player. But a 2nd round pick for a speed freak is a poor pick. These guys almost rarely can stay healthy for a full season. This is more of a 4th-5th round value pick and it’s not suprising he can’t stay on the field. See Trung Canidate. I get that for a team that made the conference title game it’s a luxury pick but there is a cost related to it.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:40 AM
yes sir. I’m not sure if they are going to be Top 25 all year good, but they will be pretty stout. they got a tough schedule this year too, should help out RPI as well as getting them some experience. I’m actually excited about college hoops this year.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:40 AM
NDub, point is, every D-Line looks great against the Eagles. Combination of Eagles terrible O-line, mind-boggling playcalling (7-step drops and deep routes, over and over), and Vick.
Agree they shut down McCoy, but much of that was his usage as well. 14 carries, a full third of which were in short yardage situations.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:41 AM
I can not abide anyone disparaging that lovely young lady. Not even a bitter, dried-out old harridan like SG.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
Kids were saying teebow teebow this morning. I panicked and asked them Where did you hear that?
They had. The encyclopedia of star wars characters open at the breakfast table and there was a mascot-y ewok type named Teebo
Whew

H-Town, there’s a great comment for you at the end of the Oklamhoma fans are bouncing thread. I’d link but the page comes up empty.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
Well this is new. A fan apologizing for his team’s shittiness.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
Tough to decide whether to be terrified or excited here.

I don’t get it.

October 15th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
I liked that play where McCoy took the quick handoff and got tackled for a three yard loss to the left side…think I saw it called at least four times, the last time Moose Johnston sounded annoyed that they went to it again
October 15th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
The TBL suicide pool started with 100 and is down to 2. No idea who they are.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:43 AM
I tell ya what though, look at JJ Watt…I mean, just look at him. I bet his touch could cure any illness. Believe it or not, I heard he was a underwater basket weaver back in his hometown and he was the best damn underwater basket weaver there was. Hell, he could fuck my wife and I wouldn’t even be mad…I’d be honored. Yates drops back, incomplete. During our pregame interview I tried to give him a handy, he stopped me, but it didn’t get awkward. Let me tell ya what kinda guy JJ Watt is. He is the type of guy who is probably a crime-fighter during his off days. My daughter said that she washed her hair with with JJ’s semen and it never had that much body to it before. I’ll tell ya I just love JJ Watt, and I want ya to love him too.
/announcers about JJ Watt, because he is white.

/high five?
October 15th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
I agree. I hate this team so much. Titus Young SENIOR can go walk into traffic for all I care. Where’s Suh? More penalties please. At least Delmas is back. He made a difference. Great 1st 50 minutes of the game Hillbilly!

Me too. Amazing what a lost hockey season and a bad (sorry, MSU folk) college football team will do for one’s interest in college hoops. Coach Fran plays an exciting brand of ball. The B1G is one of the better conferences in college hoops so I figure going 8-8 or 7-9 in conference should get the Hawkeyes into the dance for the first time since 2005.

I believe he’s in the same witness protection program for once elite defensive players who decide to go missing for seasons at a time, he’s running a bakery in Scottsdale with James Harrison.

They run that trap play and the delayed handoff. Shit that used to work with Jason Peters. It’s disaster after disaster with these losers now. Losing Kelce didn’t help.

Benny in Boardwalk Empire that shot up the hotel Gyp was at is the nephew of Denis Leary’s character from Rescue Me. I guess his character is a young Bugsy Siegel.

I read some good stuff about him on Inside the Hall a while back. Writer thought the program was heading in the right direction with him.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:50 AM
Maybe he decided that because there’s two popular and very good shows on along with Sunday Night Football that there’s no fucking point in watching a different TV show so he can go on the Internet and complain about it to an audience of 10?

Oh Jesus Christ, I never put that together. Yeah he’s definitely Siegel, considering he ends up murdering Masseria.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:51 AM
And if we really want to stretch it, we can see there are three other very good TV shows on.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
Homeland was pretty great last night. I swear to God if Estes is a mole or Saul somehow dies I’m gonna flip out.
October 15th, 2012 at 9:52 AM

October 15th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
Fox’s Sunday Night cartoon block (I know – everyone hates Seth MacFarlane), Sunday Night Football, Homeland, Boardwalk Empire, Once Upon a Time (that’s the aforementioned third show), yet let’s watch The Walking Dead so the Internet knows how much we hate it. Neat.

They did a pretty good job of making the audience think he was just some loose cannon kid who would got killed pretty quickly. I guess this is exactly how Bugsy Siegel was…a loose cannon. Did I hear the character yell “whoooo!” as he was jumping in the getaway car?
October 15th, 2012 at 9:59 AM

The line he delivers to Puffy Cheeks McAxewound as they’re about to go on stage was one of the most brutal of the series, just brilliant. That guy is awesome.
Yeah definitely.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
I’m probably in the minority here, but the only nfl I watch is the team I root for.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
Went to see some high school football this weekend. My wife’s old school, where things are pretty rough and Friday Nights Lightish, had throwback jerseys. For a high school team.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:03 AM
Didn’t watch a minute the last two weekends. Kept up to date through my fantasy team. College football is getting good and MLB playoffs are here. Why would I bother with the NFL right now?
October 15th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
oh, missed that.
I’ll disagree (not about the awesome TV line). I think every week does matter. Lions season was on the line against Philly. Couldn’t lose that one.
I guess the “every week matters” line is subjective. Does every week matter in any sport?
October 15th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
Schefter posted this yesterday…
Does anyone know who the best FA quarterbacks will be next year? I can’t believe they’d seriously go with Foles already if they don’t make the playoffs.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
My thought process started from the idea that nothing is predictive in the NFL any more. Going 15-1 in the regular season doesn’t matter. Homefield advantage doesn’t matter. Starting the season poorly doesn’t matter.
Just be fortunate enough to get in the 12-team playoffs and take it from there.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Shaun Hill is probably a FA.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Matt Flynn!
Enjoyed how for one shining moment for him last night they showed the graphic that Rodgers tied his franchise record for TD passess in a game
October 15th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
Foles is a good QB. Another full training camp and I could see him getting the starting job.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
The conventional wisdom in Philly (based off pretty straightforward comments from Lurie) is that if they don’t make the playoffs Reid is gone.
And with an easy out in the Vick contract, it would make sense for a new coach to move forward with his own guy.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
matt stafford is definitely a FAtty
October 15th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
The Pro-Football Reference SRS calculations come close…the two Giant teams are really the only outliers if you look at the SB champs of the last decade and that’s just because no mathematical equation exists to predict Eli from one week to the next
October 15th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
I’m sure the Eagles have some mediocre white guy in their system that can take over for the black guy again, don’t worry.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
I’m probably in the minority, i guess. red zone/jets/ from 1-730 pm. left my spot only to put on a pizza, get it out of the oven, go to the bathroom. had my fridge stocked with drinks.
i’ve done this every sunday of the NFL season so far. Am i tired? oh yeah.
guess the difference is I’m not watching, but working. posts and traffic are way up on Sunday (thanks to Mike and Lisk).
Saturday was also boffo. What a job by the staff.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
This hyperventilating is funny. Reid is what — undefeated? — in his career coming off bye weeks? So in two weeks after they trounce the Falcons at home fans will be making playoff plans again.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
Kinda like when Rodney Peete took over for Randall Cunningh…. oh wait.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
I just leave the red zone channel on while I’m playing Civ. I don’t think I could sit and watch it by itself though.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
I like watching games, maybe it’s because I don’t have a fantasy team
October 15th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
THIRTY posts was a bit much though. Although it’s admirable you guys put up a gif-post of every single dancing idiot fan shown on TV. Plus, Steve Spurrier wore sunglasses that one time.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
I do this too, though with 8-12 people in my house every week. The NFL is awesome as a social event. You can see friends without ditching your family. Two televisions, lots of food. It’s fantastic.
Could do that with college football, too. But people in New York state don’t know what that is.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Yeah, as anything other than background noise I feel like Red Zone would be infuriating.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Nope. Signed thru 2013.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
NFL is the only league where you can put literally any two teams against each other at any given time, and I’ll probably watch at least 75% of the game. It would probably be 100% if networks ever switched to the Madden Cam full time.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
Seems like the cop was embarassed that he got bitch slapped like that and let his emotions get the better of him.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:17 AM

October 15th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
Does Reid immediately move on to another team at that point? I would love it if he coached the Browns or Raiders next year.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
Nice.
WFS
How infuriating is it to see Lion players celebrating a play while losing. Especially when they were 1-3 at the point.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
Would depend on him. I think he would. Even after Garrett’s death he said “I don’t know what else to do, I’m a football coach.”
You know teams will wait to see what the Eagles decide on him in February before they move on anyone else.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
30 posts was a lot, but I have to question the logic of it. With that many posts going up, there wasn’t really a chance for conversation from what I could see. I also have to doubt that you were drawing in much new traffic, because random people aren’t going to come here from google for CFB news, right? So why not slim it down to 15 more in-depth posts? Also, please answer the one burning question from the weekend that I saw pop up. How do you get away with putting your logo on stills and gifs from televised game footage? Did the budget increase enough for you to pay for that stuff now?
October 15th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
The GIFs are becoming a little much, especially since this site is the one that crusades against MLB not allowing embeddable video…assuming then that the NFL and NCAA have no problems with that I’d find it preferable but this is just one man’s opinion
October 15th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
The primary purpose of this site isn’t to be a message board
October 15th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
I hate this argument. Their average margin of victory is 23 points. They soundly beat all those teams like a contender should. They didn’t barely escape like Atlanta did against shitty teams like Carolina and Oakland.
and i don’t like yours. i don’t care how much you beat a bad team by….what does that matter when you play a good team? the one good team the bears played, gb, they shit the bed. i’d like to see the bears do well, just have no confdence in them
October 15th, 2012 at 10:24 AM

October 15th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Conversations can happen, but the action is fast and furious, so the conversation moves
as noted Friday, the videos Mike pulls are getting yanked by other sites instantly. no, we do not own them. but why should we be doing work for everyone else? Let them pull their own videos. Again, I’m working to get our own video player like Sportsgrid/Deadspin. Nobody can pull their videos.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
That’s cool, I’ll pay more attention to their model. As for Eli, I love the joke, but unfortunately there are a lot less LOLEli moments. At this point I’m just terrified of him.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:27 AM

Civ V rocks. I missed IV due to shitty computer at the time, but a lot of people say they like IV better. Spent a lot of time on III back in the day.
What is the highest difficulty you normally play on?
I took a break from Civ V this past week to play some old-school real time strategy games, Age of Empries (original) & Star Wars Battlegrounds (AOE-type game).
October 15th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
If you don’t own them, how are you able to put your logo on them? I’m genuinely curious about this. I know in CFB that those videos get pulled constantly because ABC/ESPN/NBC just contact youtube and either get the account killed or send out cease and desists.
And really? You are working on getting a video player before a mobile site? Or are those things happening concurrently?
October 15th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
I’m playing on 5 now to get my bearings with the new expansion. I swear to god no matter what kind of map or situation I play in, Hiawatha ends up having forty goddamn cities.

Tim, unless you guys have numbers to back it up, isn’t it pretty logical that the commenting does as much to drive traffic as anything else? The site got big because of comment support when Cowherd was an ass. From what we can infer, a lot of the content comes from suggestions and tips from users. So why not at least listen to what the most prolific users have to say?

I would wager a guess that those who comment more than once or twice a day make up less than one percent of the site’s traffic.

Every Packers/Bears game the past 4-5 years has been a total crapfest from both teams. I don’t trust those games as indicators of anything past that week.
ok. let’s get back to the original argument then…how does whopping a bad team predict a team’s performance against a good one, with different personnel, different matchups, etc.? i don’t see it. beat the jags 1000-3, and that helps you against the niners or texans how?

I would also wager that those who comment multiple times a day helped draw greater than 20% of the traffic to the site. I know that before I started commenting I was reading the comments as much if not more than the posts. Even when it doesn’t turn into arguing and insults the comments are a good read. You can generally get good info out of them when a post leads to people analyzing data or at least throwing up good links.

Tim, unless you guys have numbers to back it up, isn’t it pretty logical that the commenting does as much to drive traffic as anything else?
I’m a regular commenter and ever I can admit commenting drives nothing. There are only like 50 or 60 regular commenters.
The site got big because of comment support when Cowherd was an ass.
I still say when TBL interviewed Whitlock was the immediate upshoot and Cowherd wouldn’t have mattered one way of the other.
From what we can infer, a lot of the content comes from suggestions and tips from users.
Pfft. TBL hasn’t needed tips in years. It is all SEO now, baby.
So why not at least listen to what the most prolific users have to say?
The writers here loathe the commenters. Because we are all assholes.
I think what McIntyre and Co. are doing is successful from a low seven figure viewpoint.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Think you’re 1) really overestimating the draw of the comments to a media-conglomerate owned site and 2) drastically underestimating the total traffic here.
I like the comments here as much as anyone who fucking hate their job but I would guess Jason could disable comments forever and not see a meaningful drop in traffic. Most people are clicking through the articles, not to comments.

The way I see it, beating the dregs of the league by an average of 23 points… if you’re a good team, you’re supposed to do that. They can’t control that they haven’t played a good team yet. I don’t see what’s so crazy about thinking the Bears would be competitive with the Niners or Texans because they looked impressive so far this year.
It’s one thing to merely beat crappy teams, but the Jags and Rams didn’t have a prayer, and they dominated Dallas in the 2nd half. You wouldn’t take the Bears to beat the Falcons right now?
October 15th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
No way this is true.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
I don’t see what this has to do with Jason’s opinions on Major League Baseball.

The building of and maintenance of community does matter to a website such as this, though. Much less so now than early on to be sure, but it still matters.
October 15th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
Wow, had no idea they had that trait…..quite an advantage….
I’m playing on the 4th difficulty right now (can’t remember what it’s called of the top of my head)….trying to muster enough strength to play a long/slow game w max turns, surely that’s gonna take a solid 2 weeks even w my relaxed schedule….

first off, the falcons are not in the same category as the giants, niners, texans, packers, pats…so yes bears over falcons, but not the others. even seattle is scary.
also, yes, you;d be less confident if the bears struggled with the bad teams (like 3-0 in the first half against jax) but i just don’t think it matters how badly you beat them once you play a ‘good’ team. different personnel, different matchups. if you can make an argument other than ‘that’s what they’re supposed to do’ or ‘it builds confidence’, i’d love to read it

I’d agree that commenting is a small fraction of the views. THey wouldn’t put up 30+ posts in an effort to get just 200 comments. If you’re coming on the weekend for comments you just need to poke in the recent comments and try to get people to stay in one thread or ask. Conversely, I get it’s not cool to get belittled.
October 15th, 2012 at 11:01 AM

I think Mole is probably right. I just checked out this site at alexa.com (not the most trustworthy source, of course).
Interestingly, here are the top searches for this site:
Query Percent of Search Traffic
1 michelle jenneke 2.08%
2 paulina gretzky 1.27%
3 the big lead 0.96%
4 michelle beadle 0.94%
5 big lead 0.47%
6 muse survival 0.42%
7 big lead sports 0.40%

Point differential is one of the better predictors for future success in sports (the 2010 Packers winning the SB shouldn’t have come as a surprise as they led the NFC in the category that season), blowing teams out means you’re good…only the two Giants champs seem to buck this trend

Would be an interesting experiment. Have Jason print the actual # of unique visitors with commenting on over a 1 week period. Turn off commenting for 2 weeks and then report the #s of unique views over that 2 week period. I know what I think would happen to his page view numbers. And if he hasn’t turned off commenting yet, with as much the writers seem to despise us, I think he agrees with me.
October 15th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
For instance:
Unique Visitors: 47
Pageviews: 188
/From my Google analytics Soused
Interesting.
6 muse survival 0.42%
Well, I didn’t expect that.

butters, i’m no stats guy. i believe they are great, i’m just not into them. but it makes no sense to me that beating a crappy team by a lot means anything once you come up against a good team. the bears, led by a shaky but all-world talented qb, do not inspire confidence even with added talent. it’s all about the o-line still
October 15th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Not true, each refresh is a page view. How many times have you refreshed this page? The only reason to refresh the page is to see the comments.
/Again though the vast majority of traffic is non-commentators. Traffic, unique visitors and page views are all different metrics. Ask Rex.
Hey, I don’t tell you how to piss in bottles.

You really think that? Not true at all. All in good fun, at least for me it is.

mole…last bit on boardwalk. one of the best quotes ive ever heard from mellon after getting grilled whether the lack of arrests were due to incompetence or corruption. “it’s my experience that human nature leaves ample room for both.” BOOM.

they’re running a business and my idea for a blog that covers nothing but golf, ohio state football, the browns, classical/jazz/progressive music and black ops isn’t exactly a money maker.

Agreed. I fired a shot over the bow at him last night, and he didn’t seem to take it well….. at least I think. Hard to read twitter sarcasm from time to time.

He can be grouchy. Which is a new trait for his online persona.

They figured out that soccer coverage got them more views and they post about OSU when the football team does stupid shit. Maybe eventually they will realize that golf is popular with that all important demographic of bored, upper-middle class, white guys and start seriously covering it.
October 15th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Very interesting guy too.
October 15th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
hey dumbass, it’s across the bow, not over the bow. you shoot one over the bow and you’d anyone standing on the bow would miss the shot unless they were looking skyward, bro.
October 15th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Yeah that’s why TBL killed The Onion Bag.

I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how this place works. They’ve all but killed soccer coverage (Fuck, Yes!) unless it involves tits of a WAG and McIntyre has repeatedly mentioned how nobody clicked on the old golf posts except for some guy in Ohio.

I actually sort of like all the gifs because its highlights I haven’t seen elsewhere.
But I dont think it would be too much to ask to have a “Early Games – Comment Here” thread that stays somewhere near the top of the page as you put up 50 questionably legal gifs all day.
October 15th, 2012 at 11:35 AM

There was an Onion Bag less than a month ago and Duffy puts up posts about the USMNT on a rather regular basis. We also get posts about Champions League and Premiere League on a routine basis.

You need to work your IT guy with some form of:
1. booze
2. camaraderie
3. Physical intimidation
Or go the full Soused with all three.
/No longer employed at the company I went all three on the guy
October 15th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
It was a weekly feature before, served as an EPL recap. TBL killed it as that.
Soccer coverage outside of the Euros and WC has dropped steeply.

I know there are some GIF haters but a lot of work sites block video and the GIFS are nice alternatives. And again I agree on the EARLY GAMES COMMENT thread item.
October 15th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Most definitely Coop’d
October 15th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Do we really need coverage outside of Premiere, Champions, La Liga, and WC?
October 15th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
Euros = European Championships, not the leagues. League coverage has plummeted. Which is fine, because it was aggregate recap crap.
