Fantasy Football Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Week 6: Vick Ballard, LaRod Stephens-Howling and Alex Green Provide Decent Flex Options
This week’s Fantasy Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em presents some interesting experiments at the running back position. Most of the top backs have neutral to below average matchups. Plenty of unknowns and ne’er do wells have the best matchups. Of course, quality often rises to the top, though matchups certainly matter. Will players like Vick Ballard, LaRod Stephens-Howling, and yes, Shonn Greene take advantage of plus matchups to shoot up the charts this week? I wouldn’t start them over other established stars, but if you need a matchup play, they all present positive situations.
At quarterback, my value play is Kevin Kolb against the Bills. We’ve seen Mark Sanchez and last week Alex Smith light this defense up. That offensive line is Arizona has struggled, so we can’t go overboard, but Kolb should be in your top twelve based on how poorly Buffalo has played against the pass.
QUARTERBACK
- Matt Ryan vs. OAK
- Peyton Manning at SD
- Andrew Luck at NYJ
- Tom Brady at SEA
- Eli Manning at SF
- Robert Griffin III vs. MIN
- Andy Dalton at CLE
- Aaron Rodgers at HOU
- Kevin Kolb vs. BUF
- Michael Vick vs. DET
- Matt Stafford at PHI
- Matt Schaub vs. GB
- Alex Smith vs. NYG
- Tony Romo vs. BAL
- Joe Flacco vs. DAL
AVOID: Philip Rivers vs. DEN
DEEP SLEEPERS: Already recommended Kevin Kolb as the start of the week among non-stars, if you have Drew Brees or Cam Newton on bye. Christian Ponder would be next based on matchup. If you have to go deeper, my desperation choice would be Bradford going against the Dolphins.
RUNNING BACK
- Arian Foster vs. GB
- Ray Rice vs. DAL
- Jamaal Charles at TB
- Trent Richardson at CIN
- Marshawn Lynch vs. NE
- Stevan Ridley at SEA
- Frank Gore vs. NYG
- Ryan Mathews vs. DEN
- LeSean McCoy vs. DET
- Darren McFadden at ATL
- Adrian Peterson at WAS
- Michael Turner vs. OAK
- Reggie Bush vs. STL
- Willis McGahee at SD
- Benjarvus Green-Ellis vs. CLE
- Alfred Morris vs. MIN
- DeMarco Murray at BAL
- Ahmad Bradshaw at SF
- Mikel Leshoure at PHI
- Vick Ballard at NYJ
- Doug Martin vs. KC
- C.J. Spiller at ARI
- Alex Green at HOU
- LaRod Stephens-Howling vs. BUF
- Shonn Greene vs. IND
- Steven Jackson at MIA
- Jacquizz Rodgers vs. OAK
- Fred Jackson at ARI
- Kendall Hunter vs. NYG
- LeGarrette Blount vs.KC
SLEEPERS: If Shaun Draughn is active, the Chiefs should continue a run heavy approach against Tampa Bay, he’s questionable, though.
WIDE RECEIVER
- Percy Harvin at WAS
- Calvin Johnson at PHI
- Roddy White vs. OAK
- Larry Fitzgerald vs. BUF
- A.J. Green vs. CLE
- Julio Jones vs. OAK
- Reggie Wayne at NYJ
- Demaryius Thomas at SD
- Victor Cruz at SF
- Dwayne Bowe at TB
- Andre Johnson vs. GB
- Jordy Nelson at HOU
- Wes Welker vs. SEA
- Brian Hartline vs. STL
- Miles Austin at BAL
- Vincent Jackson vs. KC
- Dez Bryant at BAL
- Michael Crabtree vs. NYG
- DeSean Jackson vs. DET
- James Jones at HOU
- Eric Decker at SD
- Steve Johnson at ARI
- Torrey Smith vs. DAL
- Malcom Floyd vs. DEN
- Denarius Moore at ATL
- Jeremy Maclin vs. DET
- Andre Roberts vs. BUF
- Randall Cobb at HOU
- Hakeem Nicks at SF
- Brandon Lloyd at SEA
AVOID: Pierre Garcon still limited by injury against Minnesota
SLEEPERS: Jeremy Kerley is one of the few Jets options and has a decent matchup against the Colts. Brandon Gibson is in the same boat in STL with Amendola out, and a decent matchup against Miami.
TIGHT END
- Vernon Davis vs. NYG
- Tony Gonzalez vs. OAK
- Owen Daniels vs. GB
- Rob Gronkowski at SEA
- Jason Witten at BAL
- Kyle Rudolph at WAS
- Brent Celek vs. DET
- Antonio Gates vs. DEN
- Brandon Pettigrew vs. PHI
- Dennis Pitta vs. DAL
- Jermaine Gresham vs. CLE
- Fred Davis vs. MIN
- Martellus Bennett at SF
- Jacob Tamme at SF
- Coby Fleener at NYJ
AVOID: Jermichael Finley against the pass rush and linebackers of Houston, especially with his great hands.
DEEP SLEEPER: Well, he’s not a deep sleeper, but Aaron Hernandez is a game time decision. If he plays, he’s worth a flyer even though the matchup isn’t great, if you don’t have a top 10 matchup otherwise.

Damnit. Right now I have Eli sitting and Rivers starting on Monday night.
What would everyone else do?

This is the first time i’ve looked at such a post. This has no value. Sit Rivers and start Bradford? Lol.

Crap!

I’d definitely start Eli over Rivers. Giants just don’t give a fuck.

I would start Rivers over Bradford, just pointing out a desperation option among the bottom 5 guys for really deep leagues that start multiple.

Rivers is 17th in points playing in the league I’m looking at right now, playing against the easiest passing schedule to date, going against 3 of the 6 worst teams in QB points allowed, another below average (KC) and then Atlanta. I suppose I should either not list those or clarify that, and I’m sorry, but go by the rankings. Rivers is outside my top 15 which is why I say not to start him. He’s going against the second best defense he has played all year, though Denver ranks middle of the pack.

I asked around and the consensus has been Eli on the road.
I made the switch
I made all the right moves last week and cruised to a win. Hope I can make it two in a row.
